Announcing: Electrosphere2d, Spheroid's Spiritual Successor

Hello, everyone. It has been a while, and I- the developer of Spheroid- have some exciting news about Spheroid's future- but, more specifically, the future of its new spiritual successor, Electrosphere2d.

According to the store page on Game Jolt:

in the 2D platforming spiritual successor to Fennecai Fox Creative's "Spheroid,"; you play as a robotic blue sphere equipped with a powerful electrical field, but no ability to jump. Collect data bytes, defeat patrolling enemies, and build up speed to roll through a variety of uniquely stylized environments at breakneck speeds! Journey to find out what happened to all the data that was recently stolen from the Blissful Hills datacenter!

Electrosphere2d is in a very much incomplete, pre-alpha status currently. The game is not ready to play, and development is now in the conceptual phase mostly.

I cannot announce a release date or open beta at this time, but I would like to announce this new game project for all of you who have supported Spheroid for this whole time.

The game will not release on steam.

If you would like to be notified about further development progress on Electrosphere2d and be notified when- and IF- it eventually releases on Game Jolt, you may click on the above image. The above image will take you to Gamejolt.com, where you can follow the game's development progress as soon as I have something worth sharing.

That's all I have to say for now; thank you for reading this surprising update- I look forward to hearing from you on the Game Jolt page soon!

This Game Is Dead (not a prank, sorry)

This is unironically not an April fools day joke.

I'm not going to go into detail. All I will say is that things didn't work out for Spheroid and I am deleting the store page soon, if not today.

If anyone who has bought the game in hopes of getting a future version for free is disappointed at all by this, please contact me as soon as possible: 1995aek@gmail.com

thank you. I will tie up loose ends (refunds, etc.) as necessary, requested, and possible.

Potential Issues Due to steamworks fiddling

Hello everyone, just a quick update:

You may experience issues launching the game due to recent fiddling with the steam-works settings on my end.

These settings have moved the game's files from "steamapps/Spheroid" into "steamapps/spheroid/Spheroid_public" and as such may cause the game to simply not launch.

To resolve this issue, please uninstall and then re-install the game via your steam library by right-clicking the game and choosing "uninstall", then installing as normal afterwords.

for the same reasons; I also have had to temporarily remove the "Classic" beta branch from spheroid.

For the time being, i am not planning on adding it back until the game's current major overhaul has been finished or close-to-finished, at which point i will add back the classic branch, and add the current version of the game to that branch.

that said, it will have one less copyright-infringing song in it...you probably know the one. y'know, the one an entire level is based on. im working on that; but the old version of the project is going to be a painful mess to work with on my end if im not extremely careful, so the song isnt going to be removed from that until i know how to do so without crippling the entire unity project. If the song's copyright holders are reading this- thank you for your understanding.

Current Status + VR possibility

Hello, everyone. It has been a while sinc ei basically left everyone with the idea that "a big update is coming but the most recent one briefly failed and was rolled back."

So, its high time i let everyone know about Spheroid's current development status, and im going to be very honest about it.

At the moment, Spheroid is on hold for the forseeable future. When I first made this project, I was very passionate about it, but through massive technical hurdles having to be overcome constantly, I have burned myself out on this project. knowing of a sense of obligation to continue, yet also in spite of it to a degree, I may very well shelve this for a while to collect dust until a day when i feel like making something new with some of the idea's better parts. However, there is some good news in regaurds to this game:

Due to my recent purchase of the Oculus CV1 VR headset, there is now a very good chance that Spheroid will support VR in some form. Coupled with newfound techniques for creating my own art for the game, Spheroid can be expected to look way cooler and more consistent in potential future iterations or successors- In the meantime however, I would like to take a moment and thank my small playerbase for the support you have given me thus far. every bit counts, from the smallest comments to the longest critiques.

oops!

turns out the most recent update, which i finally got to actually update...broke everything; atleast as far as the "audio" department is concerned.

I have rolled back to the previous build.

Spheroid beta 13.2

UPDATE: im aware this update didnt actually update. im fixing that right now!

Hello! i apologize for the long period of time recently in which it may have appeared the project had been shut down. I've been super busy with some huge things in my personal life (all good ones!) and now another really big update is on the way. It isnt here quite yet though; here is what is in this update:

* did some work to create new gameplay mechanics for an excitingly big upcoming update
* made the doors in level 2 open really slow and close really fast, to encourage holding the activator button down longer as intended.

I would like to also let anyone working for Wintergatan's label/liscensing agency/ band know that I havent forgotten to put you in the credits, its coming in the next update, i promise. I just havent found the time yet- again, big personal life changes. :)

Spheroid beta 13.1

this update is so tiny, there was no reason to increase the version number by more than a single decimal.

* changed a few of the loading screen tips and removed one
* fixed a very unhelpful bug that caused holographic hint text to not be on by default
*ironed out an ironic bug that the bug report button was missing from the options menu (the bug: apparently, I never even added the button. I thought I did before...)

Spheroid beta 13

Pretty small update. here's whats new/changed:

* the bug reporting button now uses the steam overlay instead of your web browser so you can report bugs and make suggestions and stuff as you play, without having to minimize the game
* The intro cutscene is now just a little more complete, introducing a new character. If the voice acting is too cringy/terrible please let me know and I will remove it and concider getting somebody else to play the role. im not joking.

(untested but i figure, not many people currently care anyways.)

A possible look at what's to come!

Hello everyone! Just a quick announcement:

I have decided to release my ideas as to what I would like to add to the game, in the form of a tentative road map of sorts. You can see what features I want to add to the game, and my progress on them, here:

https://trello.com/b/iNBQ98AY

I also use a private trello board to keep track of things in a much finer, more granular way, to keep track of bugs, community requests, etc. and I want to share just a little bit of that with everyone here. :)

Spheroid beta 12

Hello, everyone! Today I have updated spheroid again. I haven't added any new content yet, and I apologize for that- but the 4th level is in the works, dont worry. :)

in the meantime, here's what has been changed or added:

* fixed being able to pause / interact with the main menu while there was a white fade happening (I think?)
* added an in-game pause menu link to the bug reporting / suggestions discussion
* redesigned the end of level 1.
* added security cameras to the hub- [SYSTEM] is watching.
* made the ball able to roll slightly faster down ramps and along surfaces in anticipation of level 4.
* put the "laser core" spheroid unlock on a diet so it could fit on the level 2 elevator and look better.
* added more weird sci-fi sounds to level 1, and re-added the police siren sound that was apparently missing
* fixed a bug that made the lasers' sparking sound effect ignore the volume slider for sound effects
* added the ability to disable mouse locking from the main menu. this will probably be moved to the options menu in a future release.
* made some adjustments and fixes in level 3
