Movement Update

Hello! The main highlight of this update is a nice tweak to the movement physics. Prior to this update, there were certain instances where your character movement wouldn't react as expected. This gave a feeling of a "delayed response" of sorts. This was an underlying bug with the movement code, which I have now re-written to feel more responsive.

Update Highlights

  • Movement rework
  • Fixed a bug that would cause the game to crash if paused while playing "Square Up!"
  • Fixed a bug that would cause the timer to continue counting down and targets to continue spawning behind the scenes in "Target Practice" modes while paused.
  • Fixed energy GUI in tutorial not showing correct player colors.
  • Adjusted shooting on "Boundless" so that you can shoot even if your crosshair is out of bounds. (Fits the name, right?)
  • Adjusted some platform speeds on various levels.
  • Added description to "Flying" arena.
  • Added a mechanic for deflecting bullets that will slightly increase the bullet's lifespan when deflected, which allows for more meaningful deflects.

Minor patch

Minor Patch:

  • Fixed a bug that would "ready" a player immediately if they joined after more than one player had already joined and marked as "ready".
  • Added a barrier-type mechanic to prevent players babysitting the basketball hoop.
  • Fix to the new player glow that would cause not all player's glow to update to their color.

CRUMBLE collab free update!

I'm excited to bring another free content update in collaboration with BRUTE FORCE, the fantastic developer behind the game CRUMBLE. There is a nice bit of content and fixes in this update alongside the CRUMBLE collab, as well.

CRUMBLE COLLAB:

  • New CRUMBLE arena
  • New CRUMBLE cosmetic



Non-Collab highlights:

  • Added a nice new selection of player cosmetics and skins inspired by various anime.
  • Fixed a layering issue that was brought to attention after the implementation of the new pause mechanic.
  • Fixed a text overlapping issue that would occur in certain instances if specific conditions were met in the 'match stats' screen.
  • Worked on laying more internal groundwork in preparation for future platform/OS launches.
  • Fixed a bug where you could continue to randomize your appearance after you were marked 'READY'.
  • Fixed a very slight (1 px) misalignment with the energy reticule and the player's crosshair.
  • Fixed a collision issue between platforms and some of the newer wall objects.
  • Fixed a sensor bug on 'The Gauntlet'.
  • Changed the 'player glow' from white to match the player's team color.

2nd Anniversary Update

2 years, wow! When I first started making Squarena, I didn't think it would turn into a fully-fledged game. I thought I was making something for just family and friends to enjoy together, but I took that and continued to work on it. I am grateful to be able to spread joy and help people connect and have fun!

Here are some highlights from this update:

  • New arena added - "Tech Tile"
  • Powerup sprites completely remade and upgraded. Some work was done to the powerup code as well.
  • Pausing mechanic has been improved. Now it is a true pause!
  • Made a selection of new and improved artwork for some of the level objects (mainly walls) and added feature to be able to blend walls together more pleasantly.
  • Backend optimizations
  • Removed "tutorial" from the main menu. Now you can customize your character first and then enter the tutorial directly from character select.
  • Changed "New Game" to "Play" on the main menu
  • Started some backend work in preparation for eventually releasing on other platforms.

Squarena Demo Released!

Hello, everyone!

I've released a demo that brings you into a tutorial arena where you can experiment with the game feel and mechanics. Try it out with a couple friends and get a feel for the game before you jump into some matches.

Of course the full version has much more content, such as a variety of game modes, configurable rules, several levels, cosmetics and unlockable content! (no microtransactions here!)

*Also a quick mention that the full game is currently on sale for just the next ~12 hours during the Steam Winter Sale*

Holiday Update

The Holiday Update has arrived! This update brings some new holiday-inspired cosmetics and skins, along with some fixes and a complete rework of the recoil system. Who doesn't want to battle their friends while looking like a neatly wrapped gift?!

Update Highlights:

  • Added Holiday-themed cosmetics and skins
  • Added "tutorial" button in character select menu
  • Changed "help" option to "tutorial" on the main menu
  • Fixed a bug that would cause you to spend a mega shot if you fired while aiming out of bounds.
  • Completely remade recoil mechanics to improve to a more accurate and consistent feel.
  • Fixed a bug that would prevent players from exiting the credits screen.
  • Added "B to exit" display button to credits screen and tutorial arena.
  • Added audio and visual cues for when your character has "reloaded" (ready to shoot).


I'm excited for everyone to try out the new recoil. I believe it improves the general feel and flow of the gameplay. I hope everyone enjoys the changes and additions!

Minor Patch

A small patch to address a couple things:


  • Added Steam screenshot functionality through Steam overlay.
  • Level revisions

Post-Convention Patch

This is a small patch to address a couple things brought to my attention over the weekend while running our booth at Senshi Con.


  • Fixed a bug with a particle effect in the match results screen.
  • Fixed a bug with the infinite energy setting that would cause the game to freeze.
  • Made a couple small tweaks to the Square Up! map


Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth and played Squarena with us, we had a great time!

Square Up! Gamemode

This update brings a few notable changes, and yet another free content update:


  • New single-player game mode: Square Up!
    Can you make it to the top of this HUGE new map to stop the plot of the evil sorcerer?
  • New art, objects, and systems developed in conjunction with the new game mode.
  • Created a loading screen system for the new map, since it is much larger than any of the previous maps.
  • Added two new achievements, each with new content unlocks tied to them.
  • Changed window resizing code, so the game will maintain aspect ratio even if window is improperly sized.
  • Minor physics system polishes.
  • Other minor fixes/tweaks.
