Steven the Sperm

1.3.8 Changelog

What's hanging my spermatozoas and spermatozosos, here's a very quick little update to address some minor things.

CHANGELOG

  • The default color for the objects is now slightly brighter than the stage. This helps make the visuals a bit more diverse. This change will only affect new players, so existing ones will have to change the color manually if they want it.
  • Updated the some of the hints in the 5 Challenges stage.
  • Better theming on the Options screen. The background is now a blanket (like how the extras screen is bedsheets), and the sliders are Steven's head instead of being generic boring circles.
  • Removed "HD" from the Sperm-b-gone frame during the story. This was a reference to the fact that the Steam version of STS was known as the "HD" one compared to earlier versions of the game, but this is really only something that my close friends would know about, so I decided to get rid of it to avoid confusion for everybody else.
  • Updated author branding for the (hopefully) final time, and added it to the title screen. First it was Perfect Acorn, then once that shut down and after some freaking out and experimenting, I've finally decided on just using PJSim, the name I use for most of my other social medias. I also removed any unnecessary intro sequences and put my name and the copyright date on the bottom corner of the title screen.
  • WINDOWS: Changed architecture of the game from x64 to x86. There was really no reason for the game to be 64-bit only, but it turns out it was by accident.
  • DEMO: You can now exit the credits screen. The button didn't let you leave the credits screen at first... funny.
  • DEMO: Removed condescending text under "Not right now" button. Originally it said in a small font "let me play/I just wanted a free game...", but I realized some people might not think it was a joke and that I was actually trying to shame them lol

I've been very busy with college and things, so I haven't been able to do much with either STS or my other projects, so sorry for the inactivity. Feel free to leave some comments, reviews, discussions, etc! Hope you enjoy playing!

1.3.7 Changelog

So, funny story... I tried opening the code to STS in an older version of Unity just to see if I could, and it ended up corrupting a bunch of stuff. Uhh... duh! I'm surprised my sperm won the race lmao. Luckily, I had a backup of 1.3.5, so applying the fixes since then was no problem. Aside from that:

Changelog:

  • Removed some more weird old debug code - I think I've managed to get it all by now.
  • Removed unnecessary logos. I removed that stupid "only quality code!" splash and the intro for my old gamedev group. This makes the game smaller by about 10 MB! Woohoo!
  • Updated credits. Simplified things to be less cluttered and more to the point with relevant contributors and a general special thanks section.
  • macOS USERS: STS is now built for Intel specifically. Apple Silicon should still work, but STS isn't built to support both anymore, so I thought I should mention it. Although, I do wonder if it ever WAS built for both even though I said it was in an earlier post, because whenever I tried running the game on my Intel Macbook, it would crash. So anyways, yeah, now the game will work for all three Mac users.
  • DEMO: Same updates as above, and also removed the high scores screen, which was in the demo for some reason despite being inaccessible.

Thanks for playing STS! The three year anniversary is coming up... WOAH. I can't believe it's been that long. Maybe I should do something - or maybe not, we'll see how life plays out.

1.3.6 Changelog

Thought I was dead? Nope, I've just been busy with college... STS has been deposited in the sperm bank for the time being. Consider this update like me going back to update the container label.

CHANGELOG:

  • Updated Unity editor version to 2021.1.4f1. Wow, that's an entire 1.7 increase in version number! ...idk if it'll actually make anything better or worse, but ya know. This'll add official support for Apple Silicon Macs, because I know SOOO many people are buying those just so they can play Steven the Sperm on it.
  • Updated dates to 2021.
  • Removed dead Perfect Acorn Twitter link.
  • Redrew some faces for the 5 Challenges stage.

2 Years of STS!

Hey there, figured I'd drop by just to quickly celebrate Steven the Sperm's 2nd birthday!

Thanks for playing!

A Few Minor Changes

Hey everyone, hope you've been enjoying the game. In preparation for the Steam summer sale, I've decided to drop in and give a quick little update:

CHANGELOG:

  • Restored Perfect Acorn branding. I won't get into why it changed, but things are all good now. The in-game Twitter link also now goes to the Perfect Acorn Twitter, where most non-steam updates will be.
  • Updated Unity version from 2017.4.38f1 to 2019.4.1f1. There goes Windows Vista and OSX Mavericks! Now you need Windows 7 SP1 or macOS High Sierra 10.13.
  • Fixed version number mistake on the title screen. It said 1.4 when it's really still 1.3.5.

Thanks for playing!

Oh wait, I need a sex joke to continue the tradition
uhhhhhh
"quick little update" lol
yeah that's all i got right now
See ya!

Stage 1 Spermicide Fix

Hey everybody, just a super quick little update to fix an error in Stage 1 where the dashicides were invisible until they launched at you.

If you find any bugs, say something! Thanks for playing!

64-Bit macOS Fix

Hey everyone, just a quick little fix I made today...

Basically, for STS on macOS (I prefer to call it OSX but anyways...), I accidentally had the game listed as 32-bit only, even though it's a 64-bit application. Later versions of macOS dropped support for 32-bit applications, so I think Steam was telling Mac users that the game wasn't compatible for their systems, even though it was.

So basically, now people who're updated to the latest version of macOS can play STS. Sorry about that!

1.3.5 - THE COLOR UPDATE

You can give Steven something to wear, change his color, and even change your title screen, but isn't there something else we've been forgetting about?

That's right, the spermicide! Fear not, with the brand new STS version 1.3.5, you can now change the color of not just the spermicide surrounding the stage, but also the enemies Steven encounters along his journey!

Now you no longer have to download a separate branch just to escape from the oppressive red spermicide! Now you can just change a few sliders, and choose the type of view you'd like! Make the red even darker for a brutal vibe, give it bright colors to destroy your eyes, make it look pretty, gross, even completely white for that authentic "sperm" feeling! The possibilities are endless!

Changelog:

Major Change:

  • YOU CAN NOW CHANGE THE COLOR OF THE SPERMICIDE! That includes not only the stage itself, but the enemies ("objects") as well! You can change it through the Options menu. This helps add a lot of fun color to the game, which may help take the strain off of playing those more difficult stages ;)

Smaller Changes:

  • Changed the text for when the game asks if you want help during the final stage. The old one was too meta and cringe.
  • Updated the tutorial to explain Xbox controls.
  • Removed some unnecessary assets to free up space.
  • Fixed an issue that'd cause the description under the "5 Challenges" button to be cut off.
  • Upgraded Unity version to 2017.4.38f1. That's a whole 0.0.3 upgrade! Wow!!!!! You can really feel it!
  • Cleaned up some clutter in the credits... only to add even more. Also reorganized the Options screen.
  • Fixed about five pixels that were miscolored on the third panel of the story. Quality is my #1 priority, as you can see.

Notes:

- The "Blue" branch of the game will be removed, as this update makes it pointless.
- THE ROTATION VERSION OF THE GAME WILL NOT RECEIVE THIS UPDATE. I plan on running some analytics to see how many people play that version of the game to see if it's worth updating. That version is difficult to maintain, sadly.

Thanks for playing STS for all this time!.

BLUE STS! (Important 1.3.3 Update & About Beta Branches)

Hey everyone. Before I get into this update, let me just quickly say that if you've made it to Stage 5 on the unlockable mode, please clear your checkpoint data by setting it to the opposite option (then back again). I've removed the checkpoint for that stage since it was causing issues.

Anyways, let's get into it!
-----------------------------------------
UPDATE 1.3.3:

  • Updated copyright info to say 2018-2020.
  • Removed checkpoint from Stage 5 on a certain mode.
  • Beta branches now have links on the title screen that lead to discussions surrounding the branch. For more info, please read the section below.

-----------------------------------------
ABOUT BETA BRANCHES IN GENERAL:

Beta branches are for experimental features (obviously). But what I really want to specify with them is that if nobody seems to care about them, I won't bother updating them, since doing so is too much of a hassle.

I have very limited time left before I head out to college and get a job, and at that point I doubt I'll have any time left to port major features between the versions as well as work on new projects with all the real life stuff that'll be happening.

So please, if you really love a beta branch, please tell me and I'll keep updating it, or maybe even work it into the main version.
-----------------------------------------
ABOUT BLUE STS:
Tl;dr: Blue STS is a psychological experiment made to help alleviate stress while playing. Tell me if it works!!!

A while back, I was watching my friend play STS. As most players usually end up doing, he got super pissed off and frustrated. That made me think back to an earlier time when I was playing the unlockable mode, and I just remembered getting really depressed and angry, even though I was doing well.

That's when it hit me - STS has too much red. STS isn't intended to be a rage game, but if you look at all the popular rage games, you'll notice that they always have light hearted graphics (like Unfair Platformer being a light-hearted grassy land, or World's Hardest Game having a multitude of colored blocks). Meanwhile, STS is out here with RED and BLACK and WHITE.

Red is a naturally negative color. And since STS is basically all red, I legitimately think that something that may be pissing most players off is just the fact that they're staring at this oppressive red screen the whole time. So, I decided to take an idea I had for an April Fools joke and make it a reality - BLUE SPERMICIDE!

My personal tests have found this to be a success - when playing, I felt less angry and more happy when looking at the stimulating blue as opposed to the depressing red. So, if you've been getting pissed at the game, put it on the blue branch, and make sure you tell me in the discussions whether or not it helps you feel any better!
