Stranded: Alien Dawn - Combat & Healing

Hello Survivors!

Stranded: Alien Dawn launched in Early Access a few weeks ago and we have loved hearing your thoughts on it! Survival isn't easy but we've got some gameplay overviews to give you a helping guide with specific gameplay elements.

This week we'll be honing in on Combat and Healing, two things that you'll likely run into fairly frequently while playing Stranded: Alien Dawn. We'll start with combat first, then move onto the after effects, and how healing works, later on.

Wildlife and Your Survivors

You'll quickly discover that there is alien wildlife roaming the environment. Some of these creatures are mostly peaceful with a fairly low retaliation rate, while others are aggressive and will attack your survivors the first chance they get. Wildlife attacks against your camp will also happen at various intervals, and your survivors will need to be ready for when they do.

Weapons can be crafted at the Workbench, and while you'd normally start off crafting bows and spears, make sure to scavenge the wreckage of your landing pod or any nearby spaceship debris and you may be able to find a pistol or even a rifle. Equipping these to your survivor with the highest Combat skill is generally a good idea! Each survivor can carry both a ranged and melee weapon, and will use whatever fits the situation. Be aware that combat ability varies from person to person, and some survivors will outright refuse to fight because of their core beliefs. Make sure you have your best fighters leading the charge!

To activate combat gameplay you will need to Draft your survivors. Click on one or several survivors to open their Survivor Profile, and then find the Draft button. Alternatively you can also press the R key to draft the selected survivor, or CTRL+R to draft all survivors. This will let you direct them in the field and also give the orders to attack wild creatures, if you want to. If your survivors are not Drafted, they will flee anything that tries to attack them. When Drafted, your survivors will automatically attack any hostile creatures that come within range.

Wildlife attacks

Surviving on an alien planet is more than just making sure your base is running efficiently. There's hostile wildlife out there who wouldn't mind having the newly arrived humans for dinner. You'll have to prepare both your survivors, and your defenses, to keep your survivors from being torn apart. If you haven't equipped your survivors with weapons before, the build-up to an alien attack is the time to do it!

It's a good idea to have walls or high fences built around your camp to funnel attacking animals into a kill zone. We also recommend crafting some traps, which will stop most things that step on them in their tracks. There are, however, some exceptions to this, which we'll leave you to find out for yourself! Automated turrets and flamethrowers will provide your survivors with extra firepower. Finally, positioning your survivors at key points inside your camp, or up on elevated platforms, will keep them safe from enemy attacks while also giving them clear lines of sight towards their enemies.

There's no one size fits all strategy, however! Different kinds of enemies call for different kinds of action and combat strategies. Observing the hostile wildlife to learn how they attack will be a strong asset when building your defenses.

Early game Skarabeis will go in for melee attacks and bite your survivors' feet and legs. Exploding Skarabeis deal area-of-effect damage and can even be used to kill other nearby Skarabeis. In the mid-game you're likely to meet Glutches that cause chemical burns and damage nearby constructions, or Hummingflies that attack from the skies. Flying creatures avoid your traps and flamethrowers altogether, so you'll need to prepare anti-air turrets for these enemies. Last, but certainly not least, there are Junos and full-grown Scissorhands. These will show up during the later parts of the game, and can potentially take out your survivors in a single hit. Equip your survivors with armour, or try to fully avoid melee combat altogether.

Once the battle has ended, it's time to take stock and make any necessary repairs on damaged equipment. It's also an excellent opportunity to shore up any holes in your defenses, and not to mention heal any survivors that may have been injured in the attack.

Healing Wounds and Treating Sickness

Injured or sick survivors will need swift treatment. Illnesses and wounds will not only affect your survivors' overall health, it will also affect their ability to carry out tasks and their overall happiness. Painful wounds aren't exactly conducive to a happy existence, after all. Wounds and injuries can also cause long-term effects if left untreated, like making it more difficult to move or causing chronic pain.

Let's say your group of four survivors has just survived a vicious alien attack. Jack made it out with just surface wounds, but Laara is bleeding heavily after a close encounter with the attacking horde. Kana and Rakha managed to avoid the attack and are perfectly fine to carry on like before. Jack will immediately head to bed to await treatment or attempt to recover on his own. Laara's injuries are grave enough to where she can't move, so Rakha will have to pick her up and carry her back to bed. If the situation was dire enough, we could also have Jack push through his injuries and carry Laara back himself, but this isn't really recommended unless you're absolutely desperate.

Of the two standing survivors, Kana has the highest healing skill. We have set up her priorities so Healing will take priority over her other tasks, and she will immediately get to work treating the injured Jack and Laara. How you've set up your survivor priorities will determine who's going to heal the wounded or if they'll head back to work. In this scenario, Rakha will go back to his most immediate task, or you can have him reset traps and repair any damaged fences and turrets, if need be. Depending on the injuries, Kana will most likely need to grab bandages or healing salves to patch up her fellow survivors. First Aid Kits from the crashed ship will have to do for now, but you make a note to have someone craft cloth bandages for future use.

When Laara's injuries have been treated, Kana moves on to Jack. Since his injuries are lighter his recovery is fairly quick, but he'll also move a little slower when he first gets out of bed. Laara will need to spend a little more time resting, and will not only move a lot slower, she'll also be in quite a bit of pain.

Treating illnesses works the same way as treating injuries: your survivors will lie down in their bed and wait for treatment from whoever's able to provide it. Sick survivors require Antibiotics, rather than bandages, but a First Aid Kit will also work for overcoming sickness.

Your survivors can also heal themselves. If your best healer is injured it might be worth it to have them take of themselves first, and then move on to another one in the group. Keep in mind though, that the healing process can also fail depending on the healer's skill. A failed treatment by a poorly skilled healer will likely result in an infection. This will then require Antibiotics to heal (rather than just bandages).

This it for this week! Now you should be ready to tackle any enemy that comes your way, and the aftermath of your engagements with them. If you're already playing, how has combat worked out for you? Let us know down in the comments!

Stranded: Alien Dawn is Out Now in Early Access 🚀

Hello Survivors!
Buckle up and prepare for an emergency landing – Stranded: Alien Dawn has officially launched into Early Access on Steam for £24.99/$29.99/€29.99! Have your survivors gather their supplies, equip them with the best gear, and get ready to brave this new world.
Don't miss the Launch Trailer below:

What is Stranded: Alien Dawn?
Stranded: Alien Dawn is a new planet survival game developed by Haemimont Games, creators of Tropico 3-5, and Surviving Mars, that will challenge you in more ways than one. You'll be managing a group of survivors marooned on a beautiful and unpredictable alien world. Instruct survivors to gather food and resources, build shelters and perimeters, and protect themselves from hostile alien wildlife, all while managing their physical and mental needs.

Decisions you make for your survivors will shape their journey and hopefully ensure their survival. Limited resources, unpredictable weather, illness, and hostile alien creatures will make it difficult to establish a foothold in this unforgiving world. Hard work, perseverance, and a little bit of luck, will see your group of survivors thrive as they continue building a new life for themselves.

The next challenge is never far away, and you will have to cater to the wants and needs of your survivors in order to help them build a comfortable existence. Provide them with weapons, medicine, and much-needed entertainment to ensure their mental wellbeing is on par with their physical wellbeing. Each survivor is a unique individual with their own bespoke backstory, varying levels of ability in key skills, and both positive and negative traits. You'll be able to improve their skills and maximise their potential by assigning them different tasks to perform.

Your survivors' story through Stranded: Alien Dawn will be driven by unique events, alien wildlife threats, adverse weather, and the decisions you make along the way. You'll sometimes have to juggle multiple crises at the same time, not to mention balancing short and long-term outcomes with both risk and reward. The group will also need a place to live, and you'll design and build their base from the ground up. Eventually you'll also see it transform from a simple shelter to a high-tech outpost. Perimeter defenses with automated turrets will keep you safe, while furnishings will provide some creature comforts to help your survivors feel more at home.

If you're interested in seeing Stranded: Alien Dawn in action, check out our launch livestream later today at 16:00 BST on the Frontier Twitch channel or the Stranded: Alien Dawn YouTube Channel. You can also check out our Gameplay Reveal below:

If you're unable to watch the full video, or or just want the highlights, we've written up a quick summary of everything discussed in the video below. Click each headline to jump straight to the point in the video.

Introductions:
  • Tim and Jens introduces Stranded: Alien Dawn and what we're about to show you

Survivor Panel
  • The survivors are the heart and soul of Stranded: Alien Dawn - and your journey with them begins in the Survivor Panel. This is where you pick and choose which four you'll be managing in your playthrough

The Environment
  • Your survivors are thrust into an unknown situation by the sudden crash-landing of their spaceship. The world around them is ready to be explored, and is lush with various resources as well as alien flora and fauna. It's a beautiful world and your survivors will crash-land in a new location, every time you start up a new game.

Building a Base and Managing Your Survivors
  • After your survivors have scavenged for resources they can set up a primitive base consisting of shelters, sleeping spots, a campfire, and a cooking pot. It's also a good idea to set up fences, just in case your camp is overrun by hostile wildlife. In addition to this, you will need to start worrying about your survivors wants and needs, both physically and mentally, as well as their skills and traits
  • You'll be able to set schedules and priorities for your survivors, which will let them choose which tasks to perform and when

Survivor Panel Part 2
  • Your choice of survivors will impact how you play the game and the decisions you make. A group with low combat skill will need lots of automated defenses, whereas a group with a high combat skill should be able to take good care of themselves if there's an attack. There are lots of survivors to choose from, all with unique skills, traits, and backstories

Combat + defenses
  • Your survivors will sometimes need to deal with aggressive wildlife attacking their settlement. It's a good idea to build automated defenses to help in case you get overwhelmed. Turrets can offer up some additional firepower, while traps will hold attacking beasts in place so you have a little more time to take them out. However, some of these automated defenses will need electricity to function

Mid-Game Progression
  • Electricity can be generated by wind turbines, solar panels, or diesel generators, and can help run a myriad of things in your base. Anything from freezers and A/C Units to turrets and replicators need electricity in order to function properly
  • As you progress down the research tree you'll gain access to new building materials for building your base, as well as new ways to craft weapons and clothing, cook food, or build amenities or recreational items for your base
  • Building separate rooms for your survivors will help them sleep better, and providing them with heat sources will keep them comfortable during the cold nights and even colder winters
  • Observing nearby plant life will allow you to plant them as crops outside your base, giving you a steady supply of resources and foodstuffs. The season, weather, and temperature will affect how well your crops grow, so make sure to store some of it for winter

Stranded: Alien Dawn - Modular Base Building

Hey Survivors!

Have you been keeping up to date with all the exciting content we've been revealing over the past few weeks? We're looking forward to sharing with you even more interesting elements of the game that you can experiment with in Stranded: Alien Dawn.
Check out the content for the previous week's here:
Let's set the scene: Your survivors have just crash landed on an unknown planet, surrounded by strange and unfamiliar plants and animals. Everything seems beautiful and lush at first, but as you begin to take stock of their situation you quickly realise that there could be danger lurking just beyond the nearest hill or valley. Your job is to keep your survivors alive long enough to find potential escape or rescue for them. This will only be possible by building a solidified base to protect them from outside threats, while also researching new technologies to improve your home.

Will you build a humble cabin, or an imposing fort? The choice will be yours! It's time to explore Stranded: Alien Dawn's modular building system in more depth.

Base-Building
You will start off building a humble camp with basic necessities and temporary shelter, but in time you'll be able to expand into high-tech fortresses with complex defense systems and gadgets. You'll have a lot of freedom to build your own unique base, whether it be one large interconnected building with several rooms, or a sprawling community made up of many different buildings

Most your survivors’ build early on will be predominantly made of sticks, wood, hay, stone or scrap metal, all of which can be drawn from the environment by scavenging, mining, chopping, and collecting raw materials.  Eventually you’ll gain access to more advanced materials, which you should definitely use.

The terrain in which you build your base will also differ each play through as your crash site be different for each game. Will your base be overlooking mountain hilltops or burrowed amongst lush greenery? Even the closest flora and fauna around you will differ. Using the environment around you as the terrain you are in can definitely have its advantages, which is something worth experimenting with!

Building your first camp should be quick and easy. Starting with a basic camp, you'll begin to fill the area with a small shelter with straw beds, a campfire, and a table and chairs for your survivors to have a place to eat.

As you settle down and Researching “Construction Basics” at a Research Bench will allow you to erect full buildings made up of separate rooms, in addition to decking them out with actual floors, walls and roofs. This personalised angle allows you to mix and match different construction materials, to create a truly unique aesthetic. Fancy a room with a stone floor, metal walls and a wooden roof? You got it! Just be aware that certain materials have specific insulation and support strengths, so a house made out of sticks might not your best option for surviving the winter.

Multiple rooms can be built, whether you make them small or expansive, and each area could have a specific purpose to it. Your survivors will appreciate having spacious individual bedrooms so their sleep won’t be disturbed. A separate recreation room will let your survivors ease their physical and mental stressors.

Different rooms will have different needs depending on their usage. It’s probably also best to keep crafting materials close to workshops, and foodstuffs close to your kitchens. Food and materials should generally be stored underneath a roof to prevent them from degrading, and refrigeration will keep your foodstuffs from spoiling too quickly. Living spaces will need to be heated in the winter or kept cool during the summer, and this could require electricity depending on your setup.

As long as you have a safe space for your survivors from the get-go you can continuously refine it and work slowly to expand and create the base of your dreams.

Research
Conducting research will open up new possibilities for you to improve and expand your base, in addition to opening up new mechanisms that can automate defenses, reduce manual labour, and even machine-print components, weapons, or food! The research tech tree is split into 5 categories: Resources, Power, Defense, Construction, and Breakthroughs. Each play-through starts with a different set of research Breakthroughs randomly selected from the list of all breakthroughs, which will have an impact on your research strategy. In the end, it's up to you what you research and when.

As you research you may even find new ways to upgrade the durability of your structures. A house once made of sticks and stones can be transformed into a concrete or brick home. These solid structures will need to be crafted from raw materials into concrete or bricks. As you continue playing, your to do list could get longer and longer! There are also fortifications and automated turrets you can build to create sturdier defenses, as well as weapon-smithing and fashioning armor to further protect your survivors from surprise attacks.

There is an extensive list of mechanics you can unlock through researching that we haven't touched upon, so we hope you are ready to fully immerse yourself into this world and discover all it has to offer.

That's it for this week's overview on all the creative ways you can utilise the modular building in Stranded: Alien Dawn. What sort of ways do you think you'll try and build your base? Let's discuss down in the comments!

Stranded: Alien Dawn - The Survivors

Hey Survivors!

We're back again with another look at one of the key elements of Stranded: Alien Dawn. This week we'll be taking a look at the survivors you'll be managing after their ship crashes on an alien planet. The survivors are the heart and soul of Stranded: Alien Dawn. Their individual traits, personalities, and skills will influence your choices, while also shaping your progress as you work to manage their wants and needs, as well as their tasks to survive on this alien planet.

Let's embark on this journey together!

Traits and Skills
At the beginning of Stranded: Alien Dawn, you'll pick a team of 4 survivors from a pool of pre-made characters to manage after their ship crash lands. Each survivor possesses a unique backstory and personality, which in turn will inform their level of ability in eight key skills, as well as their specific character traits. They are fully realised characters, not randomised avatars. Their traits will have an impact on various things, from a survivor refusing to eat meat, to how quickly a survivor might improve their skills, or whether or not they can help improve other survivors' moods. Some traits that a survivor possesses may even completely limit them from leveling up certain skills, leading to outright refusal of performing certain tasks. Your choice of survivor can be both help and hindrance, so make your choices wisely!

Skill levels will determine where a survivor's strengths and weaknesses lie. A survivor can have high skill in combat, but low skill in research, to name one example. Looking at a survivor's skills should give you a clear idea of what tasks they will excel at and what tasks you may avoid assigning them to. Performing specific tasks will afford your survivors' experience points in certain skills, and once you've accumulated enough experience points their skill will level up. Higher skill levels open up more opportunities for an easier, and potentially more comfortable life on this alien world.  Do you want your survivors to be able to make more varied, delicious foods? Level up their cooking skill! Want someone who's speedy at cutting, mining and scavenging? Level up their physical skill! Want to make sure there is an experienced doctor in the crew, that can provide superior health treatments with a high success rate? Level up someone's healing skill! Survivor's will have particular affinities for skills, but they can also be indifferent to certain skills or totally incapable of processing a particular skill. Keep an eye on those skill levels and focus on what's necessary for the current situation.

Happiness and Meltdowns
Survivors also have happiness levels which you will have to manage. A survivor's happiness reflects their overall mental health, so make sure to provide for their wants and needs. The environment around them, the food they eat, their interactions with other crew members, and their day to day work load can effect their happiness levels both positively and negatively. Survivors are more susceptible to meltdowns if their happiness levels drop below a certain threshold. If a meltdown does occur they may start binge eating all your food supplies, neglecting their duties, or even worse! Therefore, it's important to get to know each survivor well and understand their dislikes and likes so they don't wreak havoc in your camp.

As you check your survivors' mental health, you'll be presented with a live log of recent events and how much each had an impact on their happiness. This way you'll be able to see what is troubling them and what you can do to increase their happiness. Boost their mood by making sure they have things like comfortable and warm sleeping spots, a varied diet, and rest and recreation throughout the day. Check your survivor logs once in a while to better understand your survivors and what they're going through.

As you continue to grow your camp and unlock more research in the tech tree you may even discover ways to create beverages, stimulants and relaxation substances that could restore energy and increase happiness, so make sure you are doing your research!

Relationships
Your survivors will form unique relationships with each other. These can result in special bonds, but also conflicts if their personalities don't mesh. They say there is strength in numbers, so you'll have to find ways to alleviate as much conflict between the survivors by working to avoid potential clashes between them. The outcome of the relationships between survivors can't be controlled entirely but if you try managing survivor's schedule and activities assignment it could potentially deter disagreements. If things do get too heated, you may have a fight on your hands.

On the flip side, survivors can also form loving bonds with each other. Even love can bloom on an isolated alien world. Watch as your survivors experience all the little joys and troubles of life as a couple, just like in their home planet.

Survival is not just about adapting to the harsh environment, preventing starvation and disease! There is significance in also maintaining your survivor's emotional states, utilising their strengths and keeping them alive together. Nurturing your survivors will prove beneficial in the long run for sure.

That's it for this week's survivor guide! We hope this was enjoyable and gave you lots of helpful insight into the characters that shape Stranded: Alien Dawn. Share your thoughts and questions down below!

We also have TwitterFacebook and Instagram accounts if you want to continue the conversations and come join the growing community over on our Stranded: Alien Dawn Discord! Don't forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel to keep updated with future trailers and gameplay videos.
See you next week!
