Super Gear Quest

Kewtia Crystallite Hunt Demo now available!

I released the demo for a different game I've been working on, Kewtia Crystallite Hunt, today!

Kewtia Crystallite Hunt is a bit different from Super Gear Quest, but if you liked SGQ or you're a fan of 3D platformers, I totally recommend checking it out! Plus, there is Super Gear Quest characters and more in the game, that you may be familiar with!

You can try out the demo and wishlist the game here, and watch the trailer below!

Update (v1.5.8)

Hi everyone!

This is just a small patch that fixes a few things. nothing too major!

Patch Notes

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug where encountering Dimula in Boss Rush would reset its encounter in the main game
  • Fixed an error where the new post-game boss wouldn't have music in Boss Rush, due to its unique location within Boss Rush (being after the endgame bosses, but before the final boss(es)
  • Fixed some collision on the new Yeddy (snow monkey) enemies in the new Ice Cave area to hopefully make them unable to get caught on edges

Winter Update (v1.5.7)

Hi everyone!

Super Gear Quest's Winter Update is here! This will be the last update in a while, as I have to shift focus a little to my next game (Solarblade), but it's one of the bigger updates the game has gotten.
This time there's a good bunch of new content, as well as a lot of changes and improvements. The game is also 50% off for the occasion!

Anyways, patch notes below!

Patch Notes

New Stuff

  • Added a new optional area in Mt. Mokula! Can be accessed as soon as you get there in the story, but it also has a section which can only be accessed in the post-game
  • Added a new post-game side quest! You can find it in the optional area mentioned above
  • Added 2 new bosses! Just like the new side quest, these can be found in the new optional area. Both of these bosses can also be found in Boss Rush, and one of them has an X version if you revisit it after beating the game
  • Added a special new background element that will randomly appear in certain areas once you've completed the True Ending and reached the post-game! (Note that this only appears after completing the new side quest)
  • Finally expanded more on Kewtia! If you've reached Kewtia in the post-game, you can now explore a little more of it and talk to many more characters there (most notably, you can enter the palace finally)
  • Added a special reward room in the Haunted Chateau Cellar area! This room opens up if you've beaten both the bosses there. If you already beat them after the Halloween update came out, make sure to go there and claim your rewards!
  • Added some ammo refill stations to the Haunted Chateau Cellar area, and a new shortcut back from one of the bosses (mostly because otherwise you'd be stuck there until the boss was beaten, if you hadn't beaten it or it's X version yet)
  • Added some save stations to the optional Impact Crater caves, to make it less annoying to go back if you die to the spikes
  • Added a new NPC in the Grassfields which tells you about the Item Finder and the general location of it (and I guess also foreshadows Crystal Steppe as well, but that's just a bonus). As the Item Finder is a very useful item hidden away in a less commonly visited area in the game, so having an NPC mention that it exists helps

Changes & Improvements

  • Improved some platforming physics a bit, making physics with platforms in particular a bit less janky. Mainly done to try prevent the common case where the player "lands" on a platform while still beneath it (especially while moving upwards after a jump). It can still be done, but should be a lot more precise as the player has to reach a relatively low vertical speed to "land" while inside a platform (unlike before where it'd happen all the time even while in full jump speed upward). Hopefully this doesn't break any existing places or interactions in the game (I tried to make sure at least, lol)
  • Starter / Avatar Duo will now draw in items near them by default (Starter's Charge Shot is obviously still a better way to do this, having a much larger radius and pulling items in much faster, but I figured a passive item pull would make item collecting just slightly more convenient)
  • Improved some True Boss Rush logic: Optional bosses will now only appear in Boss Rush if you've beaten them in the main game first. This is mainly to prevent the player from being "spoiled" by seeing them in Boss Rush without having actually encountered them before (as well as the confusion that could result from that)
  • Updated Pauline's sprites slightly in general, and also gave her a better-looking and more unique sprite for a specific encounter with her in Rainhalls. Also updated her gun to be more accurate to the actual design (and less of a recolor of Starter's wave)
  • The Streal boss fight now has an actual physical barrier that prevents the player from leaving the room (instead of an invisible wall), which should look more polished
  • Made the first Ancient Weapon fight slightly easier with a bit less hp
  • Made phase 2 of the Block Bots boss fight slightly easier, as each one has a bit less health than before
  • Made the True Final Boss slightly easier, by having it drop a bit more hearts throughout the fight (I've been on the fence about making this boss too easy, but decided that some more health drops may make the fairly long boss fight slightly easier to get through)

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug where if you reached certain stat levels (ex: more than 30 HP as Avatar Duo), it wouldn't increase any further. This was only possible to reach with Avatar Duo to their newest level that was added a few updates back (as this gives them access to an extra health upgrade, which made it possible to go past 30 HP, but you would gain nothing and stay at 30 HP). This cap has been removed entirely for the time being
  • Fixed Mad Butler X only being called Mad Butler during the boss fight
  • Fixed a bug with the Streal boss fight where you could walk out of the boss room and be behind an invisible wall during the fight
  • Fixed a bug with NPCs that had random dialogue, but only 2 different lines or so. If you talked to them, and then tried talking to them again once or twice, you'd be unable to talk to them more (only known case was Pauline in Kewtia)

Update (v1.5.6)

Hi everyone!

Mostly just a small patch to fix a couple more issues!

Patch Notes

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed Streal not appearing in Boss Rush
  • Fixed the Mad Butler boss not resetting the pause description after being defeated
  • Fixed a bug with the two new X bosses from last update where you had to beat one before the other (which also caused the other to not appear until you reloaded the Cellar area). Now it should work as intended

Update (v1.5.5)

Hi everyone!

First post-Spooky Update patch. This one adds a few things that didn't make it into the original update, but also makes some fixes and other changes too!

Patch Notes

New Stuff

  • Added X versions of the two new Spooky Update bosses!
  • Added the two new Spooky Update bosses to Boss Rush!
  • Added new background elements to Kewtia!

Changes & Improvements

  • Changed Kewtia's background almost entirely, fitting new lore better, but also looking more interesting and detailed
  • Tweaked the hitboxes for the new Mother Arachno boss slightly, giving it a weak spot in return for taking slightly less damage otherwise

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed some inputs (ex: Space, Enter, Arrows keys, etc) not being properly remappable to other actions, due to conflicting with UI mapping. Now you should be able to remap those as well
  • Fixed a new door in the Haunted Chateau (that was added in the previous update) being locked if a specific other door in the area was still locked

Spooky Update (v1.5.4)

Hi everyone!

This update is a special one; the Spooky Update!

The Haunted Chateau now has a new sub-area; the Haunted Chateau Cellar! And in there, you'll find two brand new bosses to fight... These two bosses were scrapped ones from before the game even released, but have finally been revived for this update!

Now, with all that said: Super Gear Quest hasn't really received this kind of event update in the past (it's difficult to find the time as a solo developer as you can imagine), but I almost always want to make something for Halloween.
Now don't get me wrong, it's not the biggest update ever; partially due to the fact I didn't get to work on this for even a full month, haha. I haven't gotten to update SGQ as much as I would like, either... Still, I managed to make something in a relatively short amount of time that I hope you'll enjoy!

Before I end this announcement post, I would also like to mention that I may add onto this in a smaller patch or two later on as well.

But for now, patch notes below as usual! Happy Halloween!

Patch Notes

New Stuff

  • Added a brand new area; the Haunted Chateau Cellar! This new optional area is accessible as soon as you have the horizontal Airdash (so you can get there around mid-game or later)
  • Added 2 new optional bosses! You can find them in the new Haunted Chateau Cellar area!
  • Added a special new NPC in front of the Haunted Chateau Entrance! This NPC only appears if you've beaten the game and gotten the True Ending, so you can find him in the True Ending post-game!
  • Added 2 new skins! Get them by beating the new bosses!
  • Added SFX for Starter's slide move!

Changes & Improvements

  • Some layout changes to the Haunted Chateau, including a new shortcut

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed FPS being uncapped on main menu if you hadn't started the game yet (now it should be capped at 60FPS like the rest of the game, which means your system uses less unnecessary resources)
  • Fixed Halt having outdated Airdash effects
  • Fixed the (now optional) Azure Guardian boss setting your objective after defeat
  • Fixed a bug where the 2nd cutscene trigger for a cutscene in the forest path wouldn't disappear after triggering the other
  • Fixed a bug where you could clip out of bounds and softlock in Mokula Base
  • Fixed layering on a specific hidden path in Greendome

Update (v1.5.3)

Hi everyone!

This patch is a small one, but fixes an important issue that was reported recently.

Patch Notes

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed a bug which made shield doors close instantly when using Starter's core, making certain puzzles not work as intended
  • Fixed a bug where the Dimula boss would flip certain tiles when going to the left side of the boss room, making it possible to leave the room etc

- Felix

Update (v1.5.2)

Hi everyone!

Just a regular patch to fix some things up, mainly some stuff relating to Boss Rush (but also some outside of it). Patch notes below!

Patch Notes

Changes & Improvements

  • Made the back door in the Wing Demon boss room open after defeating it in Boss Rush
  • Made Rooted Entity unskippable in Boss Rush
  • After defeating Dimula in Boss Rush, the spikes in the room will disappear

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed Brutal difficulty death counter being visible (and counting deaths) when playing Boss Rush mode
  • Fixed Phantooris phase 2 intro music not playing correctly if you paused the game during the phase transition
  • Fixed some missing water tiles during the Zealot boss fight
  • Fixed an oversight that made Dimula skippable in True Boss Rush

- Felix

Update (v1.5.1)

Hi everyone!

This is a patch that should hopefully fix up a bunch of bugs from the newest update (as well as some long-standing ones). Particularly some annoying bugs should be fixed now, like a game-breaking bug in Boss Rush, Boss Rush not completing properly when beaten on certain save files, and so on.
Anyways, patch notes below!

Patch Notes

New Stuff

  • Added a Back button when selecting difficulty in Boss Rush
  • Added empty button slots where Boss Rush and Credits show up later, just to visualize that something will appear there once unlocked

Changes & Improvements

  • The final phase of the normal final boss now plays the special last phase music in Boss Rush
  • Proto Weapon 2.0 now plays it's boss theme during Boss Rush (and it also rewards you with 250 credits, which it didnt before)

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed Boss Rush not completing properly if you used any save file other than File 1 to complete it (if you did, then neither Boss Rush would mark as complete, and True Boss Rush also wouldn't unlock)
  • Fixed Boss Rush results screen accidentally saying "Time:" twice
  • Fixed a bug where, if you chose a save file in Boss Rush where either Starter or Avatar Duo weren't at max health, you would also start without max health in Boss Rush (now you should always start at max)
  • Fixed a bug where a late-game boss could get stuck on a wall if it chose to make some very specific moves at the beginning of the fight, making it impossible to beat
  • Fixed a bug where an end-game boss' projectiles wouldn't reflect properly when hit with the Wave
  • Fixed a spot in Grassfields where you could reach out of bounds
  • Fixed a weird interaction between the Block Thrower and Crawler enemies, where a thrown block could make the Crawler glitch out
  • Fixed the sea mine hazards sometimes not hitting the player
  • Fixed a bug with one of the new costumes where it wouldn't appear in the shop
  • (Hopefully) fixed a bug where the Mega Slime boss wouldn't land properly sometimes

Boss Rush Update! (v1.5.0)

Hi everyone!

The Boss Rush update is out! It's not a massive update to the game overall, but features the brand new Boss Rush mode, an overhaul to a specific section of the story, and a few other things. Hope you like it!

Patch Notes

New Stuff

  • Added Boss Rush mode! You can now fight all the bosses again after you've completed the game, through either normal Boss Rush or the True Boss Rush.
Added a new section to Energy Zone! Should make this specific part of the game flow a bit better, as it was previously the only time in the story where an ability was given to Starter automatically. Now it should feel more consistent with the rest of the game (Note that if you have an already completed save file, the game will consider this level completed, but you can see it on a new playthrough of the game.
  • And if you just wanna see the new boss, you can also see that in the new Boss Rush mode)
  • Due to the above, a new boss fight for Avatar Duo has been added! (The boss can also be found in the new Boss Rush mode, if you don't want to replay the game to see it)
  • Added a new skin!
  • Added a new NPC to the Grassfields!

Changes & Improvements

  • All Avatar Duo level backgrounds have gotten an upgrade!
Due to the addition of Boss Rush, the buttons in the Extras menu now have icons
  • Updated Sound Test art a bit
  • Replaced an existing skin (Moonhugger) with a new one (can be found at the same place)
