Happy Holidays! 2023 was a relatively quiet year for us as we’ve been heads-down, working on some new ideas… but we still wanted to share some highlights from the past year!
In January we released a free update for Nobody Saves the World which featured Magic Jimmy’s Impossible Dungeon and a new unlockable Dinosaur form. We were overwhelmed with the positive response to this update and loved seeing photos of your statue gardens!
This year we added some new members to our team including 3D Technical Artist Greg and Junior Programmer Fred. We also welcomed back Animator and Artist Matheus who worked with us on Nobody Saves the World!
Speaking of our team, here are some of their favourite games played in 2023:
Cass: Nioh, Dragon's Dogma, Remnant 2
Fred: Paradise Marsh, Risk of Rain Returns, Plate Up
Gabby: Zelda TOTK, Baldur’s Gate 3, Dave the Diver, Slay the Princess
Graham: Baldur's Gate 3, Zelda TOTK, Mario Wonder
Greg: Lethal Company
Ian: Time Crisis 4, Cobalt Core, Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days
Steele: Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, Victoria 3, RimWorld
Vlad: Counter-Strike 2, Squad, Spider-Man 2, Armored Core VI
Here are some highlights from the past year:
🥇 Nobody Saves the World was nominated for a bunch of awards, including the Canadian Screen Awards, Canadian Game Awards, and Webby Awards. We didn’t win any of these, buuuuut…
🏆 Jim Guthrie won the Screen Composers Guild of Canada award for “Best Original Score for Games and Interactive Media” for the Nobody Saves the World soundtrack!
💿 Jim also released the Nobody Saves the World soundtrack on a beautiful double vinyl
💖 We partnered with Limited Run Games to release physical versions of Nobody Saves the World, Severed, and Mutant Blobs Attack (which sold out almost immediately!)
Over this past year we’ve been busy prototyping new stuff, playing with new ideas and styles. We’ve landed on something the whole team is very excited about, something completely new to us that we hope you’ll be excited about too.
We can’t wait to share more when we can, but in the meantime here’s a lil sneaky peek ^

Drinkbox Studios 2021 Year in Review
Happy Holidays!
2021 was an eventful year for us, and we wanted to take a moment to reflect on it and share some highlights.
Earlier this year we announced our brand new game Nobody Saves the World which is coming EARLY 2022. It’s our most ambitious game to date and we can’t wait for you to play it SOON 👀👀👀
Here’s what people are saying about the game so far:
"Blending the humor of the studio’s past games with the developers’ penchant for upending classic genre ideas, the opening missions of Nobody I played hint at a fascinating, funny, and fulfilling RPG adventure." – IGN
"It's pacy and fluid, slick, but light. It's great, and a good example of what this studio's all about. A layer of loveable goof, at ground level, that soon gives way to a much deeper well of combat, and systems, and a quiet mastery of genre." – Eurogamer
"From its weird genre-bending locations to its highly customizable gameplay and its funny, strange story, it looks like Drinkbox has succeeded in unifying a variety of different ideas for its take on the action-RPG genre.” – Gamespot
Wishlist us on Steam and be notified when the game launches. Every wishlist we get helps our visibility when we launch, so we really appreciate it if you're able to take the time to do so!
This year we added some new members to our team including Senior QA Tester & Assistant Producer Daniel, Animator and Artist Matheus, and QA Testers Kyle, Igor, Jace, and Vlad!
Speaking of which, here are some of our team’s favourite games they played in 2021:
Cass: Spelunky 2 (again), Inscryption, Everhood
Daniel: Wildermyth, Inscryption, Final Fantasy X
Gabby: Chicory, Unpacking, Bloodborne
Graham: Inscription, Psychonauts 2, It Takes Two
Ian: Twilight Imperium, Hitman 1/2/3, Teardown
Igor: Rimworld, Oxygen Not Included, Spelunky 2
Jace: Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Hades, FEZ
Josh: Super Mario Galaxy, Unsighted, Root
Kyle: Death Stranding, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
Mike: Guilty Gear Strive, Hitman III, Returnal
Vlad: Jak X, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, DoTA 2
Did you know we’re currently hiring a Senior Programmer? If you’re interested in applying, check out the job listing here. We’d love to have you on the team!
It was a pretty quiet year for us as we were mainly focussed on finishing Nobody Saves the World, but a few exciting things happened in 2021:
One of our favourite games ever, Dead Cells, made tribute to several indie games, including our very own Guacamelee’s Juan!
Juan also makes a cameo in our friends’ game The Big Con
Thanks for all your support in 2021. We hope you’re doing well and continuing to stay safe and that 2022 will be a much better year for everyone.
Happy Holidays, from your pals at Drinkbox studios
By the way, all of our games are ON SALE during the Holiday! These are the steepest discounts we do all year, so there’s never been a better time to pick up our games:
Say hello to our new game, Nobody Saves The World!
We’re excited to announce our brand new game Nobody Saves The World, an Action RPG where you transform into different unique character classes, including a 🐁, a 🐎, a 🧙♂️, a 🧜, a 🐉, an 🥚, and a 🐢!
Here’s what people are saying about the game so far:
“Blending the humor of the studio’s past games with the developers’ penchant for upending classic genre ideas, the opening missions of Nobody I played hint at a fascinating, funny, and fulfilling RPG adventure.” Jonathon Dornbush, IGN
“It's pacy and fluid, slick, but light. It's great, and a good example of what this studio's all about. A layer of loveable goof, at ground level, that soon gives way to a much deeper well of combat, and systems, and a quiet mastery of genre.” Chris Tapsell, Eurogamer
“One dungeon I explored was a crashed UFO site, whose stranded occupants needed me to sweep the area of monsters and get the power back on, for example. It’s a DrinkBox production, after all, where you can almost see the developers’ whiteboard with a zillion ideas written on it.” Owen S. Good, Polygon
Nobody Saves the World is COMING SOON to PC! Wishlist us on Steam and be notified when the game launches:
Wow… 2020 sure was a year, huh? 😅 Despite, well you know *gestures broadly*, we’re very fortunate to have had a pretty good year at DrinkBox and wanted to take some time to look back, reflect on the year, and share some highlights.
When COVID-19 hit back in March, the city of Toronto went into full lockdown and the whole DrinkBox team transitioned to working remotely from home. There was definitely an adjustment period as we set up our respective home offices, switched to using Discord for our daily stand ups and meetings, and got used to our new co-workers -- ie. our cats and dogs and plants, who were especially excited about this working-from-home we were all doing. We’ve since settled into a nice flow with the whole team working together remotely, and now we have a new Friday night ritual of playing games together via Discord, which is a nice thing to come out of this whole lockdown thing.
Speaking of which, here are some of our team’s favourite games they played in 2020:
While we didn’t have any new releases in 2020 ourselves, we did have some exciting Guacamelee! news to come out of this year:
The Guacamelee! One Two Punch Collection was released in Europe!
Juan made a cameo in Bounty Battle, along with several other indie game protagonists
NOW Magazine named Guacamelee! one of their Top 10 Toronto-made Games (a lot of great games are made in Toronto so we’re very honoured!!)
We partnered with Ship to Shore to create TWO vinyl records for both Guacamelee! and Guacamelee! 2! You can pre-order them both here
We also teased our upcoming unannounced game which we’ve been working hard on over this past year. It’s a brand new IP we’re very excited for, and can’t wait to share more about it with you in 2021 👀
To help us develop this brand new game we’re working on, we added 2 new people to the DrinkBox team, including Josh Davis our QA Tester and Kaitlin Smith our Associate Producer!
Hey actually, did you know we’re currently hiring for 2 additional roles including Senior Programmer and Game Tester? If you’re interested in applying check out the job listings here. We’d love to have you on the team!
Thanks for all your support in 2020. We hope you’re doing well and continuing to stay safe and that 2021 will be a much better year for everyone.
Happy Holidays, from your pals at DrinkBox studios
By the way, all of our games are on sale for up to 80% OFF during the Holiday! These are the steepest discounts we do all year, so there’s never been a better time to pick up our games:
A physical edition of Guacamelee! 1+2 Punch for Nintendo Switch and PS4 (with @LeadmanGames)
Physical editions of both Guacamelee! and Mutant Blobs Attack for PS Vita (with @LimitedRunGames)
This year we travelled to a few places including the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, as well as Spain where Cuxo did a concept art workshop with Nintendo for their Day of the Dead festivities.
This year we welcomed back Steele to help us out on production on our new projects, as well as Gabby (that’s me!) to the DrinkBox team.
Juan made an appearance as a playable character in Riverbond and will be a guest character in Indivisible. We’re super excited to see him in two of our favourite games and can’t wait to play!
It’s been a busy year for us! We're still working away on our secret project and are excited to share more when we can.
In the meantime, all of our games are 75% OFF as part of Steam’s Holiday Sale, so if you’ve been meaning to pick them up, now’s the time!
Thanks for all your support in 2019. We hope you have a safe and happy holiday and can’t wait to share more with you in 2020.
