Temple Of Snek

Quick fix! v.0.5.6

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain! This is just a quick patch to deal with a specific bug.

v.0.5.6

Fixes:
  • Fixed an issue late in Story Mode where magic tiles would trigger nearby spikes, making the North Labyrinth puzzle solvable again.

A quick UI patch

Hey snek-fans! Here's a cheeky wee patch that improves a few minor UI things. Nothing major, just some stuff I wanted to get out of the way before I get seriously stuck in to making more puzzles and finishing Story Mode. Here are the details!

v.0.5.5

Improvements:
  • Added a text-to-speech option in the Language menu that works with the engine's built-in English voice.
  • Browsing Steam Workshop from within the game will now automatically filter for skins or levels, depending on which editor you come from.
  • Made all UI neater and more readable by partially cleaning up and smoothing off the stone texture.
  • Increased the size of the chapter description font on the Story Mode pause screen.

Fixes:
  • You can now activate Fast mode after entering the exit of a custom level, as it should be.
  • Fixed a bug where Snek could drop onto spikes and survive, provided that the tip of her tail dropped onto a water tile at the same time. That was confusing.
  • Minor fixes to keyboard/controller navigation in Snek Workshop and Mek-a-Snek UI.

Viracocha update v.0.5.0

The Viracocha update is here! Version 0.5.0 unlocks the first version Snek Workshop level editor, allowing you to design your own snek puzzles and share them on Steam Workshop.

Share your challenges!

You can make a fun and/or fiendish puzzle of your own and publish it to the Steam Workshop, or you can subscribe to other people's creations. When you subscribe, the level should be downloaded automatically, and the game will keep track of which levels you've completed. The "Archisnekt" achievement is now unlockable when you create your first level, and of course levels count towards the "Pillar of the Community" achievement, if you are working towards that.

Tiles galore!

In the current version you can make puzzles using water pits, obstacles, different heights, buttons, spikes, doors, rails and more. (Only a few features aren't available yet: NPCs, light trails and magic tiles.) You can also choose a theme: dungeon, palace, temple, and garden (day or night). Custom levels can be as big as 20x20 tiles. Before you publish your own level, you have to solve it at least once, so you can be sure that every level on the workshop is possible to solve.

Lots of Help

Every button in the level editor has a detailed tool-tip explaining how to use it - just hover your mouse pointer to read. (English only for now, but we'll add translations for these in the future.) If you need any help or have any questions about the level editor, just ask on the Snek Discord or start a thread on the Steam Workshop discussion board.

This update is named in honour of the Incan god Viracocha, the creator. According to pre-Inca mythology, Viracocha made the cosmos, and humans, taught them how to make things of their own, and also later travelled the earth in a form a bit like a wandering wizard, teaching civilisation to his people. He's the namesake of this update because the Snek Workshop is all about building and sharing your own creations.

If you enjoy Temple of Snek, be sure to leave a review (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1208590/) to let people know. If you have an feedback or comments, or a bug to report you can do that using the feedback form in-game (F8) or by joining us on the Discord (https://discord.gg/MBkyN5EvHR). By joining the Discord you can also get in on beta updates and help shape the game with feedback and suggestions.

The Viracocha update builds on top of the Kukulkan update, which included the new hint system, shareable snek patterns, and a two-thirds-finished Story Mode. The next major update will be ...drumroll... v.1.0.0, the Quetzacoatl update! This will have the finished version of Story Mode, including the final act and the big finale, new puzzles, music and set-pieces, translation updates, and will also be the completion of Snek in Early Access.

Snek Workshop!

Hey folks, hope you're all good!

There's a major update on its way: Viracocha (v.0.5.0), coming in the next couple of weeks, which adds the Snek Workshop level editor on the main branch.

But you don't have to wait! The public beta branch now has v.0.4.10b, with a beta version of the level editor. It would be super great and helpful if you could give it a shot and let me know how it goes!

It'd be really useful to get some feedback on Snek Workshop before Viracocha drops. This version of the level editor has most of the features, and is live so you can publish and subscribe on Steam Workshop. You can chat about it here or join us on the discord.

There are lots of tooltips to explain how things work - just hover your mouse over a button if you want help. I'm not going to explain too much about how to use it, because I want to get an idea of how easy it is to figure out, but if you get stuck, or find any bugs, please do let me know and I'll be able to help.

If you're not already on the beta branch, the password is "TempleOfTest" - see the image below for an explainer of how to unlock betas. Thank you!

Level editor is now in beta!

Hey there BETA GANG and Acolytes of Snek!

If you want to try out an early version of the Snek Workshop level editor, you can get it now in v.0.4.6b, on the Public Beta Branch. The password is "TempleOfTest" as always. (See the image below.)

You should find that the Snek Workshop mode is unlocked for you, but if not, just start a new game in Story Mode and then return to the main menu.

We'll be adding more features and releasing new betas over time, up until the next big Early Access update.

✅ What will this 0.4.6 beta version let you do?
  • You can create, edit and play levels on your own computer.
  • You can use some of the puzzle mechanics like buttons, spikes, doors, water, heights.

🚫 What can't you do yet?
  • You can't yet publish levels to the Steam Workshop.
  • You can't yet download other people's levels (but you could probably share the files directly, if you wanted to).
  • You can't yet use some of the more complex puzzle mechanics like rails, trails, NPCs, magic tiles.

I'd love to hear your feedback. Don't be too surprised if you find bugs. I'm 100% sure you will, but please do let me know about it, either on here or on the discord.

I'm fairly sure that the file format won't need to change, but just in case don't craft your magnum opus just yet - there's a tiny outside chance that levels created with this beta will become incompatible in the future.

Thanks for your help! 😊

Kukulkan update v.0.4.0

The Kukulkan update v.0.4.0 is a small but important step on the Temple of Snek roadmap, and it's out now! Here's what Snek's got for you:

Hint system

Hints are now available throughout almost all of Story Mode (so far, and also for the future instalment) in the form of a particle trail that shows you where to go. All the hints have three tiers, so you can get a vague nudge in the right direction or watch all three tiers and get a step-by-step guide. Hints unlock after you've been in a new location for two minutes (or quicker if you've been dying a lot) and can be accessed from the pause menu. Snek won't move while the hint plays, and the hint will cancel if you press a move button. The hints are always optional, so you can ignore them or use them as you wish.

slightly spoilerish examples:

Live achievements

The in-game achievements are now live on Steam. Any that you've already unlocked on the Extras screen will now automatically unlock on Steam when you first run the update. You'll be able to 100% the game once the final early access update is out.

Mek-a-Snek + Steam Workshop

Mek-a-Snek is now complete and is also live on the Steam Workshop. You can share your snekskins with the community as well as download and play with cool skins that you find online. (The Snek Workshop level editor is coming soon!)

Friends, not food

There are now cute critters in the Temple. This is the most important update yet!

This update is named after the Mayan snake god Kukulkan, who has a lot in common with the Mexica god Quetzacoatl. Both versions are based on older snake spirit beliefs. The Maya people thought of serpents as a living connection to the spiritual world who could bring counsel from ancestors or gods. With respect to these ancient beliefs, maybe it's a fitting name for this update that adds connectivity and guidance.

The next major update will be the Viracocha update (version 0.5.0), which will be the first version of the level editor.

Beta players can share snek-patterns and get achievements now!

The Kukulkan update is nearly ready, but first it would be awesome if some players could give the beta a test run on real live Steam first! If you want to get the beta and be one of the first to get Steam achievements or share your snek patterns, you'll find the details below.

Mek-a-Snek

The Steam Workshop is open ... but currently only for beta players. With the latest beta you can publish your own creations and play with subscribed patterns other people have published.

Achievements

Achievements you unlock will now unlock on Steam. And any achievements you've already completed in-game will automatically unlock all in one go when you run the update which is like soooo satisfying to see.

Hint system and more

You'll also get beta access to the brand new hint system, as well as a bunch of other updates and fixes you can read about in the change log as always.

Beta access

If you want to try out these new features, you need to activate the beta branch. It's like early access for early access!

The access code is "TempleOfTest".

If you've never done it before, it's easy, just look in the game's properties in your Steam library, go to the "Betas" tab and enter the code. Take a look at this handy-dandy guide:

If you need any help or want any support with this beta or any other aspect of the game, remember you can join us on the Discord.

And while you're here... have you left a review yet?

Price Change On July 11

Hello all,

Temple of Snek (both the project and the place) just keeps getting bigger. The Kukulkan update is coming soon, and after that it'll just be a matter of months until the level editor and final installment are on the horizon. It's already a bigger game than I ever imagined it would be!

So we've put some thought into it, and decided to raise the price a little bit to reflect that. From July 11th (or thereabouts) the price of Temple of Snek will change to:

$12.49 USD
£9.99 GBP
€11.99 EUR

(with other regions converting from $12.49 USD)

If you or anyone you know plans to get the game soon, grab it before the 11th if you want to get it at the current price. It's also currently 25% during the Summer Sale, which ends in a few days.

a post-Pachamama patch

Just slipping in a quick patch following the massive content splat that was the Pachamama update.

Version 0.3.7 addresses these issues:
  • Fixed a potential softlock in Old Garden Camp, where if you reload at just the wrong time, the priestess could forget that she's supposed to be helping you.
  • Fixed a potential softlock near Collapsed Stairs, where you could trap yourself if you went back indoors and then used up your saves.
  • Improved the camera set-up in a secret area with a "2" in its name.
  • Snek-proofed a different secret area.
  • Future-proofed a future secret area.
  • Removed some unnecessary checkpoints that risked using up your saves.
  • Changed the way that save games are updated from Coatlicue versions to Pachamama versions, to ensure the update will only happen once.
  • The animated logo on the title screen will now only play on Windows, rather than glitching out on Proton.

Speaking of Proton - Temple of Snek runs just fine in Proton on Linux or on Steam Deck, if you have one. For now you'll need to select Proton version 6.3-8 in the game's properties in the library.

Pachamama update v.0.3.0

The Pachamama update is now live!

Version 0.3.0 is now available, bringing the next big chunk of Story Mode, including:
  • New tile types and puzzle mechanics
  • New NPC types and new dangers
  • New secrets to collect and achievements to unlock

There's a bunch of other little improvements too, including:
  • A shiny new body type to unlock in Mek-a-Snek
  • Improved music system that runs smoother and is more versatile
  • Faster fast-forward
  • Various fixes and more!

Did you notice that each Temple of Snek update is named after a deity from a prehispanic culture? Temple of Snek is not set in the real world, so the characters in the game don't represent any specific people, but the goddess Snek has a lot in common with different indigenous South and Central American deities. Pachamama is the name of an earth mother goddess of the Andes. She's the mother of the sun and moon. She's generous and supportive, but will also protect her earth and its children when she has to... like our Snek. It's time to monch some conquistadors!

The next major update will be the Kukulkan update (version 0.4.0), which will include an art pass for all of Story Mode, live achievements and some other unannounced features.
