The Dark Realm

Update 1.0.2 - Customization is here!

Travelers!

Version 1.0.2.0 is here, bringing a lot of changes and updates!

PLAYER CUSTOMIZATION

After a lot of work we are finally releasing our Player Customization!
Now you can adjust your skin and clothing to your liking.
Unlock more customization options by completing different in-game achievements.

Note: Player Customization is still pretty limited, but we're actively working on expanding the available options!

DYNAMIC DIFFICULTY

Instead of game being near-impossible on the highest difficulty right from the start, all difficulties now start out being relatively close to each other, but the higher difficulties scale up way faster. We're also trying to move from artificial difficulty wherever possible, as we think enemies just having more health and damage is quite boring. Speaking of difficulty...

BALANCING

There was a LOT of balancing this update.
So much in fact that we won't be listing all the changes here, but:

Every single class was at least slightly adjusted.
Over 30 items got changed.
Multiple formulas regarding all sorts of difficulty got modified.

The game should feel way better to play now, regardless of your skill level!

AI REWORK

Closely tied with the two points above, we have also reworked the AI of most of the enemies in the game. Most of them are very noticeable and should feel more "alive", while others are just small quality of life upgrades. Either way, we hope you'll enjoy fighting (slightly) smarter enemies!

EASTER EGGS

Easter eggs? Hidden achievements?? SECRET BOSS FIGHTS AND ITEMS??? We've got it all. Good luck finding them - you'll need it!

SMALL GAMEPLAY MECHANIC ADJUSTMENTS

Window for getting hit with multiple enemy projectiles at once has been lowered - amount of "oneshots" in the game should be way lower.

Invulnerability duration after getting hit increased from 0.25s to 0.33s.

Rolling now slightly speeds up the attack cooldown.
Does it make sense? Not really... but we thought it's an interesting and skill expressive mechanic.
To help with that, we added a new "Show Attack Cooldown" setting in options.

You can finally toggle Fullscreen in-game by pressing F11!
You can also toggle Sound and Music with F9/F10, but you could already do that on the pause screen, so it's not that exciting.

Note: Those buttons aren't supported on controllers.

SOUNDTRACK EXTENSION

12 new tracks join our soundtrack! Every area now has multiple tunes to vibe and kill enemies (and die) to!

VISUALS

As in most updates, some visual assets have been updated.
Most standing out would probably be all the Shops and the Headquarters, but there's a variety of different assets that got even prettier than before!

Also, a lot of QoL updates and bugfixes, but those aren't interesting.

We hope you'll enjoy the new update!

See you in the Realm!

1.0 Release - Out of Early Access!

Travelers!

Version 1.0 is finally here!

After over two years of Early Access, over 350 builds, and a lot, LOT of work - we're finally leaving Early Access!

And it brings a lot:

THE GAUNTLET

Entirely new Gamemode, the Gauntlet, where you face endless waves of enemies!
Has over 300 new, exclusive Passive and Active Abilities, 10 Modifiers and Global Leaderboards.
Unlocked by defeating any Boss on any difficulty in a normal run.

NEW CLASSES

The amount of classes has been DOUBLED!
6 new classes are now playable, making it 12 in total!
Ranging from a skeleton summoning Necromancer, all the way to an angry Berserker that gets stronger the more wounded they are.

UPGRADES

Upgrades have been entirely reworked. Current runes and upgrades got changed, new runes got added.
Also, upgrade refunds are now completely free, so experiment!
We also added two entire new systems to the game, each of which has their own currency to go with it:
Runecrafting - An early/mid-game system that allows you to craft additional, randomly generated runes to work alongside the usual runes!
Duality Tree - A Skill Tree, unlocked a bit later into the game, that comes with very interesting and powerful abilities, focused on two entirely new weapon elements!
You can also find two new, interesting Interactables in the world after unlocking the Duality Tree...

WAIT, TWO NEW WEAPON ELEMENTS?

You have read that right - we added two entirely new weapon elements into the game: Void and Holy!
They're both really rare, but pretty powerful and unique:
Void is mainly a Crowd Control element, shooting black holes that suck in small enemies (and non-enemies), although on the lower end damage-wise.
Holy is the exact opposite, a low-ranged, piercing beam of light that deals huge damage.

ITEMS

As in every update, we've added new pickup items and gear into the game.
Equipment now has random sub-stats, instead of them being the same on every item of the same type.
Upgrading gear no longer upgrades the substats on it!
Pickups now also have different qualities, Common, Uncommon and Rare.
Rare items are stronger and more interesting then Commons and Uncommons, but are limited to one per item, per run.

CONTROLLER SUPPORT

Full controller support!
You should be able to play The Dark Realm on most of commonly used controllers!

BALANCING

Basically the entire game was rebalanced.
Enemy patterns were adjusted, bosses were reworked, values were changed.
Every class had their stats and abilities updated.
Cooldowns of abilities were shortened in general.

VISUAL UPDATE

Almost everything, from the UI, through every area, to basically every enemy and boss in the game, has been visually updated.

NEW SOUNDTRACK

Every music track in the game has been refreshed!

BUGFIXES

Yes. (We have stopped counting after 500)

QOL

You can now hold the Roll button instead of having to press it every 14 microseconds.
We also added some tips for new players.
And like, a lot, LOT more.

We hope you'll enjoy the new update!

See you in the Realm!

Update 0.1.5

Travelers!

Early Access Patch 1.5 is here. A new boss? Class reworks? New equipment and element systems? We've got it all.

NEW FEATURES

Abilities 2.0 - Each class has got an update to both base stats and their abilities, ranging from small adjustments to a complete rework!

Instead of buying upgrades for abilities for Shards, now you exchange Skill Points for them in any Shop or HQ! You gain one Skill Point every 5 levels.

Equipment 2.0 - Each of the Elemental Weapons is now way more unique, slightly stronger, and has an empowered stat that it will always grant, regardless of quality!

Additionally, items now have a chance to have up to two Enhancements, massively increasing some of the substats! There's also a secret, very powerful Enhancement...

Global Leaderboards - Global Points are obtained by scoring in any of the other leaderboards - the higher the difficulty, the more points per stage cleared!

Loot Filter - Do not get bothered by items of sub-par quality. Only wear the strongest gear to assert dominance!
All filtered equipment still grants shards and activates items that rely on it.

Stage 20 and further, cleared portals now disappear. Make sure to plan ahead and pick the correct order depending on the run!

New Boss - After Stage 50, you will meet ~~your end at the hands of~~ Ferrus, the Elementalist, a new boss that is designed to test not your luck, but pure skill!

But, that is not his only appearance - his way stronger form awaits even further down the line, awaiting the bravest of travelers...

New tier of items, Mythics - for now only obtainable from above mentioned Ferrus - although there will be more ways to obtain those in the near future!

BALANCE (Most Notable)

Weapon Attack Speed now impacts Projectile Speed.
Timed chests are now easier to get.
Rolling now grants Dodge Chance for the duration and is faster.
Broken items are now more common the higher the difficulty.
Changed attack patterns of the triangles in Cubic Wastelands.
Heavily reduced Toy Cube and Basalt Gem Movement Speed penalties.
Wealth Upgrade now also grants Dimensional Chips.
Old Wisdom rune mini-rework - now doubles all EXP gain, but has more drawbacks.
Changed shard value of some special items.
Enemy projectiles now have a slight Damage Variance.
Reduced Attack Speed of all enemies in Nullspace.
Null Pentagon orbiter amount now scales with difficulty.
Cursed Forge cost now scales with Stage.
Lantern now adds two Fire Projectiles instead of one.
Heavy Chains no longer reduce Movement Speed.
Pipebomb now has a way larger blast radius.
Decreased player stat multipliers on Easy difficulty.
HP, HP Regen, and DEF upgrades now give percentage values, not flat values.
Grace upgrade has been reworked into Holy Visions, an upgrade that increases your range.
Reduced damage of all enemies in Nullspace by 10%.
Reduced damage/time scaling of all enemies by 5-10% depending on difficulty.
Increased slow effect of the Stopwatch.
Halved the enemy projectile speed scaling with each stage.
Saturns Wrath no longer releases Fireballs but has increased base stats.
Doubled the effectiveness of Eraser on enemies.
Revives now grant full health, instead of 50%.
Increased maximum damage absorption of all classes by 2%.
Over 60 more smaller adjustments...

Killing enemies now always plays a short sound effect.
Updated equipment and item UI.
Improved Class Selection Screen.
Difficulty selection now notes the difficulty of the patterns.
Leaderboards no longer show empty scores.
You can now see the amount of revives you have available under your health bar.
Status Effect icons will now fade away at low duration instead of disappearing.
There now is an indicator for whenever you dodge enemy projectiles.

probably more but those aren't really noted down lol

Good luck, you will need it!

Update 0.1.4

Travelers!

Early Access Patch 1.4(-months-later) is finally here and with it comes balance changes, including a rune rework, difficulty adjustments, bugfixes and... vending machines?

Runes

Runes have been reworked!
You can now only choose one rune between Offense and Defense, but they've all been substantially buffed to compensate.
You can still pick a Utility rune to go in pair with your chosen Offense/Defense rune.
This should make it easier to express your own playstyle, no matter if you prefer to be a glass cannon or a tank!
Upgrades have not been changed. For now..

Vending Machines

Now for every level-up you get a Dimensional Chip, aka a Skill Point.
For now, those are only obtainable by leveling up, but there might be alternate ways of getting them in future updates.
The chips can be used in the brand new Vending Machines!
Those are randomly found in all areas, just like all other interactables, and come with four different types, each giving different stat boosts.
Using the same vending machine continously is also more expensive than using different machines, even of the same type.
This is aiming to make level-ups a bit more important than just a full heal, and adding some more choices into the game loop.

Difficulty Adjustment

Game too hard. We've heard you. So, we're making it a bit easier!
These changes are aimed to make Easy, well, actually easy and more accessible, and Normal mode also a bit easier than is currently is.
Hard and Deadly should not change too much in terms of difficulty, but will drop 15-25% more Galactic Coins than before.

Reduced all stats (Attack Speed, Health, Damage) of enemies by 5-30% depending on difficulty.
Increased base HP of all classes - melee by 100, ninja by 75, ranged by 50.
Increased DEF/level gain of all classes by 1 and HP/level gain of all classes by 15-25.
Buffed range of all Melee characters except Guardian by ~25-30%.
Buffed base projectile speed of all classes.

TL;DR: Game easier. Maybe too easy. Will probably revert it next patch. Make it even harder than it ever was. Instant death on taking any damage. Yeaaah.

Balance Changes

Changed Ninja's Shuriken Throw - it can now sometimes throw 7 shurikens at a time, but has lower base damage.
Changed numbers around on different difficulty multipliers, including Galactic Coin gains.
Enemy projectile patterns no longer drastically change between Medium and Hard difficulties.
Changed patterns of multiple enemies, including some bosses and minibosses, making them more readable, but changing with game difficulty.
Buffed some item pickups.
Reduced the movement penalty of lava.
MASSIVELY increased chance for elemental weapons to apply elemental effects.
Improved patterns and AIs for some enemies.
Made poison stay on enemies for twice as long on average.
Nerfed Movement Speed upgrades on Rings.
Made Cursed Forge slightly less common and some of its power from bonuses to base item stats.
Drastically increased Heal Orb pickup range.
Made Heal Orbs drop less often, but heal more.
Increased Heal Orbs lifetime by 50%, and doubled Fire Orbs lifetime.
Probably more that we forgot to note down.

Other

Adjusted Leaderboard position in the starting HQ.
Improved mouse snapping to the window.
Fixed Keybinds sometimes not saving properly.
Fixed some errors on Summary screen and added new information there.
Made elemental immunities consistent - now all mobs in Obsidian and Magma should have 100% immunity to burn, but take greatly increased damage from frostburn.
Portals in HQs no longer have a 5-second cooldown before entering.
Optimized late-game performance on low-end machines.
Fixed a minor memory leak that slowed the game down after it's been running for over ~12 hours. (Not like anyone would play for that long anyways... right?)
489 other small quality changes and bugfixes...

Stay tuned for version 1.5(-hopefully-not-years-later)! Good luck, travelers!

Update 0.1.3

Travelers!

Early Access Patch 1.3 just dropped and with it the final part of the visual overhaul, focusing on the GUI, alongside achievement rework, leaderboards, content additions and bugfixes!

Major Changes:

Stage Leaderboards! Split by combinations of Class + Difficulty, you can now compete to be the very best on your favourite class!
Reworked Steam Achievements! (Mostly due to Steam's limit of 100 - this also means some of your achievements might need to be obtained again. Mainly boss kills. Sorry!)
Visually updated all the GUIs, including Runes and Upgrades!
Added a few new interactables! They can spawn in all areas and have different effects depending on many different factors.
Added 13 new items - and with that we're planning to stop releasing new items for a while, as we feel the current amount is just right.
Substantially changed some elemental effects, their stacking and numbers.
Special-tier items have been been made even more special. (and balanced!)
Stats at the end of the run! Not as important as the others, but feels like a very nice addition.

Minor Changes:

Some items have been slightly changed.
Some pickups have been buffed, some have been nerfed.
Fixed a bug where Broken Teleporter could STILL teleport you out of bounds in Obsidian Caverns.
Fixed border of Obsidian Caverns not being properly drawn.
Obsidian Claw has been reworked.
Nerfed Obsidian Caverns boss by 7-25% depending on Stage and Difficulty.
Made Fire and Ground weapons more consistent.
Something suspicious appeared in the game...
Buffed stacking on Attack Speed items. (most notably Machine Gun and Little Void)
Ground explosion effect has been adjusted.
Many bugfixes and minor changes, like always.

Stay hydrated and tuned for our 1.4 Update! Although we can't exactly tell you what plans we have for this one just yet...

Good luck, travelers!
