The Depths of Tolagal

The game will be back on sale soon

Hello,

Even though Angry Toad Studios is no more, I found that I am able to work with Steam as an individual so the game will be back on sale soon :)

It's still not likely that I can add any more updates in the future, but I am intending to release the 2.0.0 update that is on the Beta branch as it includes a lot of nice technical improvements as well as a little bit of new content.

Cheers!

Angry Toad Studios is closing down

Unfortunately due to a combination of different issues, Angry Toad Studios is closing down and as a result of this it is not possible to provide any more updates or support for The Depths of Tolagal and it has now been removed from sale on the steam and humble stores.

The game will remain in your library so you can still play it, but it's no longer available to buy and will not be receiving any updates in the future.

Beta branch updated to 2.2.0-beta

This update includes some UI changes based on feedback from players.

- Shields and power attacks can now be deactivated by simply activating the item again (clicking on it or pressing the hotkey) instead of having to hold control while doing that.
- The ordering of the action buttons on item description dialogs has changed so the first button in the list will hopefully be the one that is most commonly used. The order is now: [ Pick up, Equip, Use, Move to backpack, Drop, Deactivate ]
- When targeting with a ranged weapon, monsters will always come before inanimate objects in the target list.

Beta branch updated to 2.1.0-beta

Bug fixes:

- If you are killed by rotted potions or blood magic, the correct 'killed by' name is shown in the high scores list.
- Ushatars now only ever hit once per turn. Previously they would hit 3 times if they had nowhere to move to after attacking.

UI updates:

- inanimate objects (crates/weapon racks/etc) are now targetable with TAB during combat.

Gameplay updates
- Putrid branch damage ranged damage reduced to 0.
- Removed damage penalty on magic items.

Beta branch updated to 2.0.1-beta

Bug fixes:

- savage strikes bonus no longer gets applied to off-hand melee weapons
- riposte no longer triggers an attack from a charged off-hand melee weapon
- fixed bug that could cause the game state to break when an enemy was killed

Misc:

- If there is a fatal error a popup will be shown with some info about the error. Previously fatal errors were not handled properly and the game would continue to run but in a broken state.

Work in progress 2.0.0 update now live on the beta branch

A work in progress version of the 2.0.0 update is now live on the beta branch for players that are interested in seeing the new stuff early or want to help test balance/technical issues.

To unlock the beta branch, right click on the game in your steam library, open the 'Betas' tab, enter 'tolagalbetabranch' in to the password text box and click the 'Check code' button. You should now be able to select the beta branch in the drop down list. When you select the beta branch steam should download an update for the game.

The current patch notes are available to view here: https://trello.com/c/iCsGN9Sk/561-2-0-0

If you do decide to test it would be great if you could post feedback in the discussion forum :)

Cheers!

v1.2.0 now live - Leveling system improvements

Version 1.2.0 is now live. This update is intended to improve the levelling system, making it a bit fairer and less RNG dependent. This was the most common complaint in reviews so hopefully this will make a big difference :)

  • Changed number of talents you can pick from when you level up to 3.
  • Removed the "Explosive" talent. I don't think anyone ever picks it.
  • The "Telefrag" talent is only offered if you are holding a weapon with the "displacement" trait when you open the talents window to level up.
  • The "Fire Resistance" talent is only offered if you are holding a weapon with the "burning" trait when you open the talents window to level up.
  • The "Polymastery" talent is only offered if you are holding a weapon with the "polymorph" trait when you open the talents window to level up.
  • The "Sure footed" talent now makes you immune to being displaced by enemies as well as immune to knock back.
  • Monster immunities are now shown in their description
  • Rolled back the version of node-webkit used for Windows.

Levelling up should now be a more pleasant experience. Stopping the magic weapon specific talents from showing up all of the time means they will only appear when they are actually a viable choice for you. Removing explosive, buffing sure footed and letting you pick from 3 talents each level instead of 2 should give you more freedom to develop your character, and each level up will only present viable talents to choose from.

I rolled back node-webkit because I noticed that the game was performing worse in windows since the last node-webkit update. Now it's back to 60 FPS on my potato! Yay!

More updates on the beta branch

I have made the following changes to the build running on the beta branch right now:

  • Changed number of talents you can pick from when you level up to 3.
  • Removed the "Explosive" talent. I don't think anyone ever picks it.
  • The "Telefrag" talent is only offered if you are holding a weapon with the "displacement" trait when you open the talents window to level up.

  • The "Sure footed" talent now makes you immune to being displaced by enemies as well as immune to knock back.
  • Monster immunities are now shown in their description

I'll test this a bit more over the weekend and move it from Beta to the live branch on Monday.

I didn't bother to increment the version number because 1.2.0 hasn't gone live yet :P

1.2.0 beta now available

v1.2.0 is up on the beta branch now. It's a small update with the following changes:

- When you level up you can now pick from 4 talents instead of 2.
- Monsters immunities are now shown in their descriptions (e.g. immune to bleed, terror, etc).

These are only small changes but hopefully they will have a big impact on the gameplay and give you much more control over how your character develops. Please try it out!

To opt-in to the beta you will need to follow these steps:

1. Right click on the "The Depths of Tolagal" in your game library
2. Click on "Properties"
3. Open the "betas" tab
4. Enter "tolagalbetabranch" in to the text box and click on "Check code"
5. Use the drop down menu to select the beta branch
6. Wait for the game to update and then launch!
7. You should see "The Depths of Tolagal 1.2.0" in the window title.

v1.1.1 update now live

This update fixes the following bugs:

  • Monsters no longer spawn inside vases in the deep moot.
  • Bleed damage can no longer be less than 1.
  • Healing rings will no longer lose their charge when moving between levels while inside your backpack
  • OSX 10.10 launch problems should be solved

Cheers!
