The Floor Is Really Cheap Lava

Any Issues with Performance?

While testing the game, the overall performance seems to drop when in the new Snowflake Blizzard mode and while in Firefly mode. Has anyone experienced worse performance in either of these modes, or just in general?

Hotfix for Infinite Bottle Rocketing

Due to an issue with being able to infinitely Bottle Rocket while the Magnet is equipped, the Magnet can no longer be used while using the Bottle Rocket or the Snowflake.

Pterodactyl Update 1.3 Patch Notes

Patch Notes 1.3

Bugs

  • Fixed an issue with the mouse control that caused the marble to be locked to the center of the track after pausing the game.
  • Fixed an issue where when traveling at high speeds with the Bottle Rocket, you would sometimes miss collectibles.
  • Fixed an issue in the settings menu where the resolution dropdown would display duplicates of certain resolution options.
  • Firefly game mode now counts towards the achievements. If you already have a high score in this mode, it should automatically carry toward any distance related achievements. However, collection achievements were not counting in this mode until just now. Sorry for any inconvenience.
  • Fixed a visual issue where the right-most Lava Fall would clip into the mountain.

Updates/Additions

  • Added a Leaderboard:

    • There is currently only one Leaderboard: “Greatest Distance Traveled”. This will be recorded in all game modes. Additional Leaderboards will be added in the future.
    • Eventually, depending on your position on the Greatest Distance Leaderboard, you will have a different hat equipped.

      • 1st Place: Golden Top Hat
      • 2nd - 3rd Place: Ruby Top Hat
      • 4th - 10th Place: Silver Top Hat
      • 11th - 100th Place: White Top Hat
      • Everyone else will have a Black Top Hat
      • You only keep your hat as long as you keep your position on the leaderboard.
      • Please note, this feature is not currently in the game. As of now, everyone has a black top hat equipped.

  • Collectibles:

    • Added a collectible, the Dinosaur Bone. Collecting a Dinosaur Bone calls your best pterodactyl friend, Johnny Pterodactyl for a ride. He will carry you for 15 seconds. But be warned, he doesn’t like geysers, so make sure you help him navigate around them, otherwise your ride might be cut short. Spawn odds are 20%. While in this flying state, you will be unable to collect:

      • Bottle Rockets
      • Snowflakes
      • Other Dinosaur Bones

    • Added a collectible, the Magnet. Collecting a Magnet will automatically pick up all nearby items. It lasts 20 seconds and can be used with any other power up. Spawn odds are 35%.
    • The Bottle Rocket now has a speed multiplier of 8.5. Previously 5.
    • Updated the Snowflake:

      • The marble now has a speed multiplier of 3 when using the Snowflake. Previously did not have a speed multiplier.
      • When in Snowflake mode, the marble now rides a sled and wears a Santa hat.
      • The 2D blizzard screen overlay has been replaced with a 3D blizzard.

    • Updated the visuals of the Lava Rock.

  • Added a simple death animation to the marble.
  • Added a jump feature. Press ‘Space’ to jump. Please share your feedback on this jump mechanic so we know whether it should be tweaked or removed.
  • The marble now starts at -30m instead of -20m to give more reaction time on start.
  • When the marble collects an item that gives or takes meters away from your score, a UI text element displays how much was given/taken.
  • Added a ‘How to Play’ screen on the main menu that displays the game controls and the collectibles with their properties.
  • Added a way to check high scores on the main menu. Hover over the game mode button and the high score for that mode will pop up.
  • Added a text element on the ‘Game Over’ screen that displays what level you’re currently on.
  • Performance Improvements:

    • Terrain now gets rendered at the start of each game which will result in a higher frame rate.
    • Terrain quality has been adjusted to optimize performance.

Developer Notes

  • Please share your opinions on the music that plays when collecting a Snowflake. Would a howling wind/blizzard sound work better? Thanks for your input!
  • If you have any suggestions for any new game modes, we'd be happy to hear them!

Firefly Update 1.2 Patch Notes

Patch Notes 1.2

Bugs

  • Fixed an issue where if the marble collected a Snowflake or Bottle Rocket within one second after coming out of the Snowflake or Bottle Rocket mode, they would be vulnerable to lava.
  • Fixed an issue where collectibles wouldn’t spawn for a duration of time after starting a game.
  • Fixed an issue with the Robin Egg where if you hadn’t collected any bonus meters, it wouldn’t subtract any meters from your score.
  • Fixed a couple bugs last week that weren’t mentioned in the patch notes.

    • All Steam Achievements now work in all game modes.
    • Forced an aspect ratio of 16:9 to prevent UI elements from becoming distorted.

Updates/Additions

  • Added the Thunderbolt. Collecting this will cause a storm cloud to travel ahead of the marble, carving the lava path with its lightning. Spawn rate is 15%.
  • Adjusted collectible spawn rates:

    • Lava Rocks spawn rate increased from 75% to 85%.
    • Snowflake spawn rate decreased from 50% to 30%.
    • Bottle Rocket spawn rate decreased from 25% to 23%.
    • Robbin Egg spawn rate decreased from 33% to 20%.

  • New game mode, Firefly:

    • In this mode, the only cheap lava you can see are the ones lit by your firefly friends circling you.
    • Snowflakes and Bottle Rockets are disabled in this mode.
    • Meters gained from traveling (not collectibles) have a multiplier of two. So, without collectibles, if you traveled 100 meters in a normal game mode, you would have traveled 200 meters in this mode.

  • Added a settings menu.
  • Music changes:

    • Music for Meteor Mayhem has been switched out with an alternate track.
    • Music for Main Menu has been switched out with an alternate track.
    • New track for Firefly mode.

  • Performance improvements:

    • All objects that get spawned at the start of a level now don’t get destroyed and re-instantiated when restarting the level. This will cut down on lag spikes when you restart levels.
    • Adjusted terrain quality to cut down on render times.

  • Added a mouse control setting that can be enabled in the settings menu. This is off by default.
  • Added a control to get more precise movements. Holding the ‘W’ key or the ‘Space’ key will decrease your sensitivity by 50%. Let us know what you think of this new feature and if you think 50% is too high or too low.
  • Robin Eggs now give/take 500 – 10,000 meters from your score. Previously 100 – 2,000.
  • Robin Eggs now have a 60% chance of adding meters and a 40% chance of taking meters. Previously 50% - 50%.
  • Added a special high score screen when you get a new high score.
  • Added a blizzard animation when the Snowflake power is in use.
  • Updated the lighting on the main menu.

Developer Notes

  • Due to a last minute error with the Lava Shoppe and Marble Skins, its release will be postponed until further notice.

Patch Notes 1.1

Bugs

  • Fixed an issue where the marble would sometimes get launched into the air. As a result to this fix, the center of the marble now has to be over the lava for it to recognize a hit. This will make gameplay slightly easier and performance slightly better.
  • Fixed an issue where the mouse would still be visible while playing a game.
  • Fixed the issue preventing the main menu audio from looping.
  • Fixed a rounding issue where a new high score wouldn’t match the current score text.
  • Fixed an issue where the UI displayed a negative score on start. The score will now stay as zero meters until the marble gets to the first lava block.
  • Fixed an issue where the lava generator generated only a single tile every frame if needed. Because of this, this caused the marble to sometimes be able to outrun the lava. Now, all lava tiles are generated on a single frame.

Updated/Additions

  • Added an option to adjust sensitivity on the main menu.
  • Added a gamemode “Meteor Mayhem”.

    • In this gamemode, not only do you have to avoid cheap lava, but you also have to avoid falling meteors! Let us know what you think of this new game mode!

  • Updated the game visuals:

    • Added not-so-cheap lava to the ground beneath the floor.
    • Added a nighttime skybox.
    • Added an aurora borealis effect to all levels.
    • Added lava shimmer effect to lava tiles roughly 50 meters in front of the marble.

  • Marble now moves at a constant speed and no longer speeds up as the game progresses.
  • Updated the in-game UI elements.
  • Added a pause menu. Press the escape key to access it. When resuming a game, you will be invincible for 3 seconds. During this time, the distance meter will not increase and collectibles will not be able to be picked up.
  • Marble speed adjustments (Due to the fact that it’s easier to avoid lava tiles with the new lava detection method, speeds have been increased so the game modes aren’t too easy. You shouldn’t notice a big difference in gameplay.):

    • Increased marble speed in Easy, Normal, and Hard modes by 13%.
    • Increased marble speed in Expert mode by 15%.
    ]
  • Performance improvements:

    • Decreased terrain quality which greatly reduced lag spikes.
    • Marble no longer uses taxing physics calls when rolling down the path.

  • Added a frames per second debug display on the bottom right corner of the screen.
  • Power-Ups and Collectibles

    • Added Lava Rocks: collecting a Lava Rock grants 1,000 bonus meters. The second Lava Rock collected grants 2,000 bonus meters, the third 3,000, and so on.
    • Added Snowflakes: collecting a Snowflake will cover the floor in a sheet of ice protecting you from the cheap lava for 10 seconds. Collecting another Snowflake while the path is iced over will reset the timer.
    • Added Bottle Rockets: collecting a Bottle Rocket will attach a Bottle Rocket to the marble, launching it down the floor of cheap lava at a much faster rate. You are invincible to lava while being launched.
    • Added Robin Eggs: collecting a Robin Egg may result in losing 100 to 2,000 meters, or gaining 100 to 2,000 meters. There is a 50% chance for either gaining or losing. All meter values have an equal chance of appearing.
    • Spawn Odds (collectibles spawn in place of a lava tile, so every lava tile has a chance of being a collectible.)

      • Odds of any collectible spawning are 1%.
      • Odds of a Lava Rock spawning are 75%.
      • Odds of a Snowflake spawning are 50%.
      • Odds of a Bottle Rocket spawning are 25%.
      • Odds of a Robin Egg spawning are 33%.

  • New Steam Achievements added.

    • All achievements, both new and old, work in all game modes.
