Ok, so one gripe we've received several times over from game previews, youtube vids etc was the lack of platforming precision. Well, I pulled an all-nighter last night and coded until the sun was blaring through my windows and I have to say I'm quite pleased with the improvements and I think all of you will be too! Here is a list of what has been improved in this build:
- Improved environment collision detection. Player can now jump much more smoothly and should not get cuaght on short walls/crevices when jumping
- Increased jump height and double jump height by 10%
- Decreased the cooldown on most enemy attacks, allowing them to attack more often
- Improved hitboxes for more accurate collision detection in battles between player & enemies
- Revised level design in Challenge Level 1
- Fixed some enemy pathing issues in The Abandoned Mines
If you tried an earlier build of the game we highly encourage you to revisit the game. We've made dozens upon dozens of improvements/changes/bug fixes and things are definitely tightening up. Is there still a lot of work to do? Absolutely, but things are feeling much more fluid. There likely won't be another build until the new content is released later this coming week, but once it is released expect loads more improvements and fixes with that build as well.
Thank you for all the feedback. I'm honestly loving this and having a blast improving my passion project.

New content coming by February 16, 2018
By Friday, February 16, we will be releasing new content into The Forbidden Arts. The new content introduces a new area of the game called The Northern Wastes and will provide several hours of new content and will increase the total game content to 60%. This is a massive content update for the game and we're very excited to release it. Also included in this content release will be a lot of other improvements to the game as well as some bug fixes, so stay posted for the full announcement with a detailed list of everything that's included. In the meantime please enjoy a preview video of The Northern Wastes:
We pushed out a major update today. We've been working really hard, making notes about everything from game previews, reviews, youtube videos etc. If you've mentioned something we've noted it and we're working hard to improve, fix and update everything. Build 0.4.1.0 is now live and includes the following updates:
- Shortened the downtime after casting a fireball. Phoenix regains control much faster now and can spam fireballs if necessary. Don't drain that fire pool though! :)
- Player is no longer able to perform a jump while siphoning fire
- On the world map, player will now drown only while fully submerged in the water, and not partially in the water
- Player will no longer run in place when barely moving the joystick on a controller while on the world map
- Player's jump height has been reduced on the world map
- Player will now walk and run in levels based on how hard the joystick is held down for movement
- Fixed a lot of weird physics-based issues with moveable crates
- Revised level design in Black Fang Pass
- Revised level design in The Green Vale
- Fixed some minor animation issues with the player
Prior to these fixes we've introduced nearly a dozen updates since we first made a build live on January 9. For the full details on all we've updated, changed or fixed please visit the community discussion board and have a look.
Next week we'll be introducing the first major content update which will increase the game's total content to 60%! More news, and some video footage on that to come shortly. Please keep the feedback coming. Our list of edits is long, but it's never long enough. You're helping us turn this game into something special and we thank you.
p.s. here's a photo of team Stingbot, so you know who you're dealing with. Yup, just the wife and I :)
The Northern Wastes - New Content!
Two weeks from today, The Forbidden Arts will be launching on Steam Early Access. We are very excited for the release, and even more excited for the future. We've received some excellent feedback so far and we've made loads of improvements and changes to the game in the past couple of weeks. Visit the community page to see all of the changes/improvements/bug fixes implemented in each new build. Thank you so much for the feedback so far!
We originally planned to add at least two major content updates while the game remains in Early Access. We've decided to increase that number to three and we're pleased to announce the first major content update will be released shortly after the initial launch into Early Access and will include several hours of additional gameplay.
It's a good thing you're the wielder of flame because it's gonna take a lot more than platforming skills to survive the Northern Wastes. The icy lands in the northern region of Chora is home to Orin, the ancient ice dragon. He is the commander of the skies and known to the world as the Aeromancer. In the previous area of the game you unveiled a major development in the storyline and this new area continues where the previous left off.
The Northern Wastes will allow you access to The Mountains of Orin, a new spirit challenge level, the most challenging boss fight yet, and a completely unique mini game that is sure to generate a few smiles and laughs. It's nothing like what you've seen before. We've also added in a dozen more achievements to earn.
Along your journey you will meet various friends and foes including goblins, ice golems, yetis and dragons, each with unique fighting mechanics or character traits. There are several new abilities and upgrades to earn in The Northern Wastes.
