The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout - Act 1

November 6, 2018 : V 1.1.1

This build fixed a few obvious (and comical) bugs that came out with the Vermin Update including the infamous Hockey Puck Rat bug...half-sad to see that go away actually...

What's new:

  • Lots of collision and geometry bugs found and fixed in the two new levels
  • Added individualized rat AI state callouts in Scene II
  • Ongoing graphical polish, particularly in the UI department for this build
  • Several new rat animations to help them feel more alive
  • 56 Urgent and High level bugs crushed and coded
  • Fixed the persistently dead rat bug (AKA Hockey Puck rats) and the converse Resurrecting Rats bug
  • Updated the scent cave tutorial...again...and it probably still needs work. This has been difficult to make interesting...

What's Next:

  • The Woodlander Update which will include several new characters and minor locations to fill out the friends and family of our hero and also make Liam a fully playable character that you can choose at the beginning.
  • Also, while not germane to Steam, there's a lot of effort to get the game launched on Xbox One and PS4 by Christmas...

October 26. 2018 : The Vermin Update

Announcing the highly anticipated Vermin Update!

A huge addition to The Scout that adds two entirely new levels full of the villainous rat pirates that are burning Lilygrove to the ground!

Nine individual, unique, scavenging pirates to encounter and engage and each with their own personalities, conversations, goals and character arcs.

Each rat, both females and males, have their own thoughts and concerns to overhear and observe plus a dynamic interaction matrix when any two rats get together to discuss and deviate. Use your wits, and the available tools, to maneuver and enrage your targets...and just wait to see what happens.

And last, but opposite of least, is an all new terrifying encounter with the enormous weret Scumsnout.

Also in this update:

  • All new gorgeously animated main menu with granular level selection
  • 45min of all new voice over content.
  • Fully reworked and optimized cutscenes with subtitles
  • Full support for Windows 7 (actually fixed in the previous bug patch in case you missed it)
  • ...plus dozens of bug fixes, graphical upgrades, and performance improvements.

This is the biggest content push we've had since March and every Redwall fan will want to check it out.

Oct 16. 2018 - Windows 7 update

Windows 7 fix!
(...pretty sure...)

This will be a quick update but we've completely reworked all of the cutscenes using Unity's timeline feature and it appears this has fixed the nefarious Windows 7 crashing bug. Huzzah!

We say "pretty sure" up above because we've had several beta testers report success we haven't heard back from some others so we're running on partial information.

Regardless it's a big step and we're super happy to have found this solve.

September 14, 2018 - Redwall is live.

Eulalia!

It’s (a)LIVE!

The Lost Legends of Redwall: The Scout is now live and ready for purchase in the Steam store - we actually DID it!

Feedback from Redwall fans has been very encouraging with comments like:

  • “As a diehard Redwall fan I was thoroughly impressed with the results...definitely the closest book-to-game rendition I've ever seen or could have conceived of the series.”
  • “So cool! Keep it up! Our youngin' is over the moon with your work already, and is blown away at the quality of this release. More, please! 😁”
  • “...I love Redwall and have been following this for a while...a solid 3D action platformer that reminds me of the Hobbit game from the mid/late-2000s. Gorgeous artwork and voice acting and dialogue that really catches the atmosphere of the Redwall universe…”
  • “...loving the game...very reminiscent and nostalgic of the old fantasy games I grew up playing (i.e the Hobbit etc)”

It’s been a very rewarding process to get here and we owe a lot of special thanks to a lot of people, including many of the people here, on Discord, and other places. From day one we always considered this license to be a responsibility and an honor more than an opportunity. To that end we’ve worked very hard to be open and candid, collaborating with the brilliant Redwall fan community as much as possible and while we can’t make everybody happy, we’re so glad to know we’ve been able to make a LOT of people happy.

How To Help

The question we get the most these days is from excited fans who want to know how they can pitch in and lend a hand. For the moment the answer is simple:

Play the game.
If you love it, let us know and write a review.

User reviews are a big deal here so we’d be honored if you took the time to play...actually play...and let folks know what you thought.

But Wait! There’s More

As exciting as the launch of The Scout is for all of here at Soma Games it’s only the first thing to come to reality. Here are some things in the near future to keep an eye out for:

  • The Vermin Update: Within the next ~30 days or so we’ll release the first major content update to episode one. It will include two new levels, lots of new dialog, and big improvements to how rats and werets work in the game.
  • Escape the Gloomer: The second major release of The Lost Legends of Redwall and something completely different. In partnership with Scott Adams (yes, THE Scott Adams...or at least one of them) Escape the Gloomer is a modern take on an old-school favorite, the text-based adventure. We’ll have more to say on this in the future but look for release in Q4
  • Much more...sure, that’s vague but the point we want to make is that a lot of gears are turning now and we have a nice long list of content releases and updates in the pipeline.

We hope you’ll lift a tankard with us to celebrate the achievement and we can’t wait to hear from all of you.

P.S.

For those just catching up a quick recap of the road to this point goes like this:

Working On - Total Bugs: 14

I'm stuck in the maize maze after eating my wayinside the walls.
Submitted By: Luvlymish

Coyle is stuck at the top of the watchtower saying his "I'm certain a youngster..." line over and over again when I try to get the next part of the first quest
Submitted By: Adrien Mcculloch

Can't Get The Right Conversation From Coyle - Hey I'm having an issue that makes the game pretty much unplayable. I've just made the soup in the first act and I'm trying to talk to Coyle but he won't stop repeating his line about youngsters. I've tried over from the beginning, I'v tried loading a checkpoint, I've tried drowning myself in the water to reset but I can't do a single thing. It's quite disappointing because I can't do anything to play the game.

Cannot Save Ichabod - You can lead an ichabod to a dumbwaiter but you cant make him use it - sage advice but also broken

Crash on New Game - Three discord users are getting crashes when trying to start a new game. These may or may not be related. All have given their output logs.One user says they get through the loading screen before crashing.

Fraybie maze pathing - Fraybie sometimes doesn't go to maize. Navmesh pathing is off somehow.Check to see if path available is being checked and deleting a nav target if a "partial" path is found

Missing Lore images - mail loads a white screen.
Submitted By: Toothrip

Scumsnout on cart - Scumsnout jumps on to the cart with you and kills you, leading to an endless death loop of impossibility.

I'm using Controller. When I navigate to the settings to check my keybinds and I reset my 'down D-pad' for Grouping other Mice, I could no longer navigate the menu with the controller. Using keyboard was fine.

The opening cinematic played the sound but was only black on my screen

Attempted to dash in Hilltop Camp and got stuck in the dash animation
Submitted By: Sylvane Mindune

i was doing the geocache objective during the initiation and after i found one cache i fell into the river trying to get the the location to look for the next one after i respawned the one i had found did not count towards my total and had not respawned so i could collect it again this made completeing the objective impossible I tried reloading a spawn but that didn't work so i had to restart my game and do the tutorial over again
Submitted By: Admlral Aardvark

after you rescue the friend in the hallway you get stuck cant move unless you jumpand on the boardwalk after the hole you get stuck
Submitted By: Matthew Cox

player turned ninety degrees. I think I just smelled the rat and fell over ;)
Submitted By: Caleb Lelacheur

Restarting a checkpoint while searching for geocaches (e.g. by running into water) resets the counter for the number found without reseting the placement of the geocaches, making the task impossible to be completed unless one exits the game and reloads their save.
Submitted By: Joel

When attempting to exit out of the main menu settings menu, the menu doesn't close and becomes a blank menu (but still with the " settings " title.
Submitted By: Peter

the "submit bug" form doesn't seem to be working-Emu discord

Can't move party

alot of screen jitter - There is alot of screen jitter in the game when walking and running.The bug above you submitted has been fixed and it will appear in the next build. Thank you for your support in making Redwall the best it can be.

Beta! It's totally real...

Eulalia!

After entering Early Access in December last year, and many iterations in the last seven months, we're ready to call this thing a Beta build.

"Beta" can be a slippery word so here's what WE mean by "Beta"
* We're working on bugs
* We're working on performance
* We're working on controls
* No more features are being added (yet)
* No more content is being added (yet)

If you've been lurking and hanging out, now is a good time to buy. We want, nay, we NEED your feedback to find every bug, glitch, and sneaking vermin before we go full release. As a motivation all Early Access purchases will be counted as full Season Passes when we go live which will get all three acts of The Scout when they release for the price of one. But this offer is only good until we release in full. After that - it's one episode at time for you boyo!
...If you're already in the EA group - you're already included in this deal. :)

What We've Been Up To:

If you are the proud owner of this game already but haven't played the build in a while, we'd like to invite you to take a look. The core levels have been polished and finalized, voice overs have been added, and every day more and more bugs are removed! After a warm reception at Portland's own Game Developers Conference, we are proud to call this game nearly complete.

Just A Taste Of The Newest Material:

-Hours of professional Voice Overs
-Updated Art
-Polished Quests
-NPC group mechanic
-Smarter, Deadlier Rats
-Faster Ladders
-Updated Lighting
-Smoother FPS and Much Optimization

What You Can Look Forward To In Future Updates:

-Animated Cinematic
-Polished Animations
-Reworked Dialog System
-New Mini-Levels with a Verminous Focus
-An In-Depth Cooking System
-New Ingredients
-More Lore
-Polished End-Level Records Screen
-Polished Save System
-Refined Scent Trails
-And more :)

Thank you for your support, your patience, and your enthusiasm! We look foward to hearing from you!

07 July 2018 Steam Early Access Build : Combined Tech and Content Update V 0.95

Since the previous build we've been tackling some very specific bugs and performance issues that will benefit from a wider QA base then our internal team.

Which - By the Way - HUGE shout out and thanks to the folks on the Discord channel (https://discordapp.com/channels/401134689777090582/401138082637938688) for being such thoughtful, helpful, groovy help along this crazy path!

We're likely to be putting up some incremental builds pretty quickly in the next couple of weeks.

05 July 2018 Steam Early Access Build : Combined Tech and Content Update V 0.94

Lots, and lots, and LOTS of updates in the last 30 days. All new Voice overs and cutscenes, much expanded dialog and lore, plus a raft of bug fixes and optimization.

The truth is, we're now working on loose ends, optimization and bug fixing and with this build we're over that hump to where the bug list actually gets smaller day by day instead of getting bigger... so we have that going for us.

If you purchased the Early Access build back in December but haven't circled back to see what's changed - now would be good time to get any last minute feedback to us.

For those interested in a 'what's next' discussion keep an eye on an upcoming roadmap broadcast on YouTube live. Watch our Facebook page or details. (https://www.facebook.com/RedwallGame/?ref=bookmarks)

03 June 2018 Steam Early Access Build : Combined Tech and Content Update V 0.91

At this point in development we expect to be publishing smaller, iterative builds pretty steadily so as a result the changes from build to build are likely to be smaller.

This build, for instance, fixes several visual and operational bugs and makes minor optimization improvements but if you weren't paying attention you might not even notice.

We're getting pretty close to a full release now...almost there.

25 May 2018 Steam Early Access Build : Combined Tech and Content Update V 0.9

The Scout has come a long way since our first build was posted just about five months ago and this might just be the last major update we make before making a genuine commercial release of Act I...depending on how this goes. :)

What's New?
A lot...it would be shorter to tell what's the same but here's a few highlights:
* New Dialog System
* New level: Hilltop Camp
* New Menu system
* New cinematics
* Updated...just about everything

What's Next?
There is still obviously work to be done in terms of polish and finished art assets so that's the main effort to come next as well as finishing off a few mini-levels, mini-games, and of course voice over work. Bug fixing and optimization are also ongoing matters so anticipate those to keep on going iteratively.

All that said - we're getting pretty close now and barring the unforeseen we expect to push forward in a way that focuses on additional content like more story lines, more levels and of course more playable characters and species.
