It's official. The Magister was 2021's 'Best Game About Being An Alcoholic Hallucinating Fanatical Fantasy Detective'. At least, that's the highly prestigious accolade bestowed upon The Magister by PC Invasion in its 'Alternative Awards'.
Here's what PC Invasion had to say: "...depending on your randomized character, you might be compelled to drink every day, or visit the temple, or maybe you see enemies that don’t actually exist. Flawed protagonists are a standard, but it’s fun having something like that in a randomized game where you have to battle your own demons as well as the mystery at large."
So now you know – when it comes to games about being a boozy snoop extremist, The Magister is up there with the very best of them :)
UPDATES: BIRD COMPANION, NEW PERKS, LEADERBOARDS AND MORE!
The Magister has received a couple of new updates recently so we wanted to highlight some of the new content and features that have been added to the game.
BIRD COMPANION AVAILABLE FROM THE TRADER
In addition to being able to recruit a cat or dog companion, you can now purchase a bird, a falcon to be precise, directly from the trader to accompany you in battles. The falcon has the following three moves:
FLY: Flies around at random. Gain a 50% chance to dodge the next attack.
FLYING STRIKE: Strike the enemy for 14-28 damage. Add 7 damage for each Dodge this character has.
CLAW SLASH: Deals 10 damage twice. Each hit increases the damage taken by 25% for the next 3 attacks that hit the target.
GLOBAL STEAM LEADERBOARDS
Upon completing a case, you are now awarded a Fame score depending on how well you did, and how convincing a case you managed to build against whichever suspect you accused. The Fame score is multiplied depending on which difficulty level you were playing on, and then posted to the global leaderboard, which appears on the main menu screen.
COLOURED TEXT
Important dialogue information is now highlighted in a different colour. This makes it much easier to identify anything you really don't want to miss at a quick glance (clues, locations, skill points etc.) which is particularly helpful for players who have a tendency to skip text or are playing with the 'Instant Text' activated in Settings.
10 NEW PERKS
The addition of 10 new perks takes the total number to 105. This is the list of new perks included with the latest update:
TREASURE HUNTER: Random encounters are much more likely to have locked treasure chests.
DREAMER: You are now able to confront your inner demons in a dream.
LOOTER: Random encounters are much more likely to have extra loot lying around.
FREQUENT PATROLS: All red random encounters will have an extra Guard fighting on your side.
GET A GRIP: When you roll 1-3 for a 'Hallucinations' card in Tactical Diplomacy, draw a card instead.
WINDWALKER: Performing a melee attack on a target that is out of range no longer reduces your damage.
HYPERSOMNIA: Whenever a 'Fatigue' card is player, recover 5 HP.
UNSTOPPABLE RAGE: Playing the 'Enraged' card lets you draw two cards instead of one.
PEOPLE PERSON: There will only be up to two modifiers in Tactical Diplomacy attempts instead of three.
CULTIST HUNTER: Your attacks deal double damage against Cultists.
IT'S NOT REAL: Hallucinations in battle now appear only 50% of the time.
BLUFF SUSPECTS USING TACTICAL DIPLOMACY
When you've reached a 3-Star reputation with a suspect, you now have the option to 'Bluff' them using Tactical Diplomacy and force them into an admission about their whereabouts on the night of the murder, without needing to have gathered supporting evidence. This means, theoretically at least, it's possible to complete a case without finishing all the side-quests.
END CREDITS
When the game ends, there's now a dedicated Credits screen to enjoy! Nerdook, the game's dev, has also said any streamers who cover the game on their YouTube or Twitch channels should let him know and he'll add them to the credits in a future update. You can find various ways to contact Nerdook here.
