đź“… News from Bloober - Cronos: The New Dawn is coming fo FGS 2025!
Tune into the Future Games Show Spring Showcase next week for exclusive insights about Cronos: The New Dawn, the upcoming survival horror by Bloober Team!!
In the dark universe of The Medium, The Maw stands out as a terrifying entity born from human trauma and suffering. It is an adversary whose presence haunts the player like a shadow. As a metaphor for destructive pain, it tears the soul apart piece by piece.
The Maw’s appearance evokes nightmarish visions. Its humanoid silhouette, with grotesquely elongated limbs and a disfigured face, triggers a primal fear. The creature’s voice, masterfully brought to life by Troy Baker, is equally unsettling—full of strange whispers and promises of destruction. The Maw speaks, revealing its twisted desire to consume its victims in an attempt to drown out its own suffering.
Narratively, The Maw is tied to the past of the protagonist, Marianne, and the dark history of the Niwa Resort. It symbolizes how unresolved tragedies can sometimes fester into something genuinely dangerous.
The game introduces elements of stealth and survival in dealing with The Maw. Playing as Marianne, the player has no means of fighting the monster directly—instead, they must avoid confrontation, hide in the shadows, and rely on the protagonist’s unique psychic abilities to survive.
The Maw is a terrifying nightmare that not only haunts the protagonist but also plants a lingering unease within the player, a reminder that the worst demons are born in the human mind. It is a being that leaves an indelible mark, long after the game has ended.

Marianne is a medium, capable of communicating with spirits and moving between the material and spiritual worlds. This extraordinary ability makes her both the driving force of the story and a tragic figure, struggling with her own traumas as she discovers dark truths about herself. Marianne’s appearance in the Spirit World differs from her real-world self. With her white hair and the bright light of her powers, she resembles a candle in the darkness, guiding lost souls through the void.
The inspiration for Marianne’s role as a guide came from the mysterious lanterns of the dead, widely known as lanternes des morts. Between the 12th and 14th centuries, these lanterns were erected in many places across Europe. Through their light, they pointed the way for people lost in the darkness and announced the proximity of sacred places—locations caught between the earth and the heavens. These lanterns acted as waypoints for both the living and the dead. They also dispelled the gloom, where penitent souls or wraiths might have hidden— and revealed criminals lurking to prey on travelers. The dual purpose of the lanterns of the dead has fascinated historians for centuries.
Fun Fact:
Most surviving lanternes des morts are located in France, particularly in the Limousin region. They can also be found in Poitou and Berry, with a few examples in Spain and Great Britain.
At first glance, Marianne’s abilities seem to be useful tools for helping spirits trapped in the spiritual world. However, the game quickly makes it clear that her gift is also a curse. Marianne doesn’t just see the suffering of others—she relives her own pain repeatedly. The truth about her past raises questions about her mission. We leave the answers to you - look for them by delving into our story about a true medium - a living lanternes des morts.

Check out the the list of Polish themes in The Medium!
Story Setting
The story of The Medium is set in KrakĂłw, Poland, and the locations featured in the game are real. Marianne resides in a tenement in the Old Town, which is also the same building where the events of Observer: System Redux occur.
King's Monument
Next to the tenement, there is a monument of the Polish king, Władysław II Jagiełło, which was revealed in 1910. It commemorates the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Grundwald (1410), where the king defeated the German Teutonic Order. The monument is visible in the intro video of the game.
Marrianne's flat
The flat where Marianne and Jack live is filled with iconic interior decorations and references to Polish culture from the 90s, such as furniture, carpets, pictures, and potted plants.
Classic coffee/tea cups
The metal holder for a coffee glass that Marianne uses in the beginning scenes of the game is an iconic one, used in Polish homes for decades.
The Black Madonna of Częstochowa
In Jack's room and office, you can see a picture called "The Black Madonna" It is a reproduction of the painting located in The Jasna GĂłra Monastery in Poland, which was a very popular depiction of Saint Mary.
FCS "ŻUK"
FSC "Żuk," the van parked in the courtyard of the tenement, was one of the most popular and iconic delivery vehicles in the history of Poland.
Fiat 126p ("Maluch")
It is said that the Polish Fiat 126p "Maluch" ("the little one") was the cornerstone of automobile transport in Poland. Two wreckages of this vehicle can be seen next to the Niwa Resort entrance.
See you in the next one!
Unveiling the Real World Inspiration For Our Game
A Haunting Homage: Did you know the abandoned Niwa holiday resort in the game is based on a real location in Krakow? You can even visit it yourself! But Niwa isn't the only slice of reality depicted in The Medium. Marianne's tenement house and the square outside are also meticulously recreated.
Stepping into the Real Niwa: The mosaic adorning the resort's hall is a faithful replica, as is the entire hall itself. While the in-game hotel rooms capture the essence of the real Niwa, they are by necessity condensed for gameplay purposes.
A Tribute to Beksiński: The Spirit World wouldn't exist without the profound influence of the brilliant Zdzisław Beksiński. Several elements pay homage to him, such as the imposing Eagle in Thomas's office.
Marianne - A Beacon of Hope: In the bleakness of The Spirit World, Marianne shines like a candle in the dark. Her white hair, pale skin, and subtle ethereal glow all contribute to this symbolism.
