Squatting Penguins Team here, signing in to announce the release of Beta 3.0 for The Mims Beginning, including the new Survival and Sandbox modes, along with 2 completely new levels, featuring cutscenes, new enemies and an assortment of new additions.
Our tiny team consisting of 3 people is celebrating the 4th anniversary of having started working on The Mims, which commenced all the way back in June 2012. It goes to show just how much effort it takes to create an indie title the size of The Mims Beginning.
Four long months have passed since the last update, during which we did our best to deliver a stable, bug-free and well-polished build of the game. The Mims is now fully supported in three languages, which caused a slight setback on the release, not to mention the day-to-day grind that would sometimes slow our progress down to halt.
With that out of the way, thank you for your kind understanding. The changelog might seem sparse at first, but the new additions involved numerous changes and weeks upon weeks of work.

In the meantime we also started working on elements that will not be part of the latest update, such as new levels and their code, level design, models (e.g. Rocket Drill, Magnetic Engine), new islands ( e.g. desert, old ruins, etc.), new enemy types (e.g. dragon, giant spider). With that in mind, we should roll out the next update (likely the last pre-release one) much sooner. Put it differently, all the elements of the puzzle are there, but we still need to arrange them.
We rely on your help in optimizing the Survival mode (in particular, the difficulty levels), as well as the newly introduced levels.

Sorry that we haven't written any news since last 3 months.
It has been 4 years since we started working on The Mims!
We are working hard on new Steam update of the game.
There will be a lot of new gameplay features for you.
We finished Survival Mode and we prepared Free Mode too!
You will be able to prepare your own gameplay by choosing types of floating islands, pests, predators, wind speed, trees, gems deposits, waves, victory and lose conditions and many many more options to choose! Some of this functions can be seen in the screenshots.
We hope you will enjoy them!
There will be 2 new missions in this update, but you will be able to read more about it in future posts.
We are working now on translations and optimization of new features which we implemented.
New update will be available on September ( we hope that in the first half of September.)

Squatting Penguins Team here signing in to announce the release of Beta 2.0 for The Mims Beginning. We took to heart your feedback from the last couple of months. The update brings along numerous new game elements, additions, settings and further optimization. We are happy with what we were able to achieve in that time. We tried to improve on all the game elements that you brought to our attention to hopefully deliver a smoother and more enjoyable experience.
Main elements that we have added/enhanced are:
Camera steering has been rebuilt from scratch to give a more “god-like” feel to it. Clicking on the map and holding down the mouse wheel / middle button will anchor the mouse cursor and allow to drag the camera around that point (think touchscreens). To rotate the camera, simply select a point on the map by clicking with your mouse wheel / middle button and then press the right mouse button to rotate the camera around the item. Thank you for all your input regarding the feature and we hope that you will find the new system to your liking.
Gem mining as an alternative to selling animals: Starting with the next update you will be able to extract the crystal deposits that dot the island. To extract the Gems, hit repeatedly its external rock layer with your Guardians or PSI powers. With that obstacle out of the way, our mims will hurry to mine the deposit and carry it back to our PSI tower. This added feature should make for a more fluid and enjoyable gameplay in the early phase.
Bio weeds as an alternative to planting: Up till now the only way of obtaining Biomass was through planting a bio plant and waiting for it to bear fruits. Bio weeds will grow on the islands from the outset, producing fruits at irregular intervals. The weeds also contain a single fruit of high caloric content that can be obtained only upon setting the plant on fire, before being transported by mims to the Extractor. Weeds should speed up dramatically the starting phase of the game, allowing for more options and giving to the player extra freedom.
Enhancements to generating Psi Energy: A special new button appeared in the PSI tower. With it, players is able to manually assign how many Mims should be spending their time on psi-generating meditation. Thanks to that, casting spells will be possible in the very early stages of the game, even without electricity. This new feature might also come in handy in the times when you happen to have too many Mims and not enough work to go around. Now the otherwise unoccupied Mims will hang around the PSI tower.
Mysteries and secrets: the initial islands contain brand new content in form of secret objects and puzzles to reward exploration and perceptiveness. At present, the feature is implemented in a rudimentary way with clicking on a given item causing to unlock it, however majority of the levels in the final version of the game are set to feature secrets and puzzles, often times quite challenging.
Defensive formations: we have implemented a system of combining several guardians into a single unit. Simply click on any given guardian and click on the “create formation” option to make the nearby guardians gather up. The unit will not act on its own and is fully dependent on player commands. Formations are particularly useful when attacking powerful enemies and large enemy swarms.
We have greatly improved Mims’ AI. This was easily one of the most time-consuming features to have been introduced with the latest update. The workers now coordinate with each other, carrying out tasks, such as collecting fruits or Gems, and constructing buildings, much more efficient for a more fluid and compelling game experience. Additionally, the guardians behave now in a more intelligent manner, attempting to create distance between themselves and their enemy before attacking again, thus making the hasten power much more useful.
Other additions/improvements:
Life, Energy, Growth and Progress bars counter – provides the player with added insight regarding different in-game statistics, etc.
Gem transfer – from now on mims shall transport Gems from Spaceport to PSI Tower. Consequently, to spend Gems you will have to deliver them first to the PSI Tower.
Turn the Mims house on/off option
The house shows now the added energy and health of each mims currently staying inside, allowing the player to assess, how effective is the structure, in case of an electricity shortage,
“Select Next Hero” button, which allows the player to toggle to the next hero without having to find him on the map
Terravermus (a.k.a. big bug) is now prone to PSI power that slows down movement
The mouse cursor changes dynamically to show that attack cannot be performed, when Guardians become tired.
An updated and more accessible tutorial and early game sequences that provide a better introduction to the game.
Bug fixes for side missions; new side mission added.
New info on the timeline about Eviltidas (evil creature in the canyon level) spitting out carnivorous plants. Info about incoming rains.
New, improved red-fruit tree model
Range template for the PSI powers will now also display Power cooldown and lack of availability, when the player doesn’t have enough PSI energy stored
Toggle Vsync on/off in the game’s settings
Tweaked difficulty level across several maps.
Fine-tuned gameplay, animal / technology cost, task duration, energy production, animal and fruit
Smell, enemy’s strength, etc. -- a whole boatload of tweaks that makes for a much more fluid and enjoyable experience
Save game feature has been high on many people’s wishlist, however we wanted to focus on making the gameplay as fun and enjoyable as possible, since even the slightest change in gameplay brings its fair share of challenges in way of carrying out tests and altering game settings. Starting with today we will be fully committed to delivering the save game feature along with new levels, three of which are already in works. We have also been working on new animals and bosses that we don’t want to reveal just yet, but we will be able to deliver them with the next update quite soon, having already made some progress.
The next update will additionally feature new levels / side mission and secrets.

It’s been a month since “The Mims Beginnig” has come to Steam and we’ve received lots of great feedback. We’d like now to share with you what we’ve managed to accomplish since the initial release and what are our plans for the future.
Here are some of the new features that you’ll be able to play with the next update:
Crystal mining as an alternative to livestock trading. From now on you’ll be able to mine the crystals located across the island. Be mindful that they are covered in a protective layer of stone and you’ll have to first break it with either PSI power or with your defenders. Once the layer is dealt with, your Mims will rush in to mine the crystals and then deliver them to the PSI tower. We’re hoping that this new feature will make the first stages of the game more fluid and entertaining.
Harvesting bio weeds as an alternative to bio plant planting in the early stages of the game. Right now, if you find yourself lacking biomass in the early game, you have no choice but to plant a bio plant and patiently wait for it to bear fruit. With the new update bio weeds will grow on the islands from the very start of the game. Don’t fret though, these weeds might not be suitable for farming, but burning them down will reveal a single high calorie fruit, that your Mims will throw into the extractor. This has dramatically speed up the early game and also greatly expanded the degree of choice that the player has in the early stages of the game.

Mysteries and secrets. The islands will now hold a random number of secret objects and puzzles that you will uncover by clicking on them. Every secret you discover will benefit you in some way, for example activating a waterfall will increase the energy of all the Mims that bathe in it.
We are still working on this things, probably we will add them with next update:
Saving game whenever you want during a mission. Many of you asked us to implement it. We searched for possibility, and probably found it. We will add this function, but we cannot provide you, that it will be present in next patch. But, this is our priority.
Camera control – it will definitely be upgraded, it is possible, that function „Control camera with buttons” will be added. Also, whole camera control will be redesigned. Moving camera by approaching cursor to the border of the screen can be a bit frustrating for some players, and really not the best solution.
We are working on new levels, but we want to make them perfect, before sharing with you.On new level you will see caves and lake with geyser. Tornado will appear, and some new foes.
We are upgrading Mims and Defenders intelligence. Mims will better communicate during fruits caring, and the Defenders will be smarter during battle.
We are also working on a possibility of linking Defenders on groups, to avoid clicking each Defender again and again.

Yesterday Linux and Mac players reported that there was a problem with "DNA Ball" mission. We fixed it.
FIXED:
-The problem was that disintegrator didn't work, so even if clock showed 0:00, next level didn't load. We Fixed that problem. This problem was present only on 64bit systems. Now you can proceed with your gameplay.
IMPROVED:
-We've made some slight changes of Camera controls. Now Q,E is rotating view, and R,T is for zooming. Keep in mind that that we are still working to improve Camera controls, this is only change of keys setting.

After nearly three years in development, The Mims Beginning is finally available on Steam Early Access. It is truly an extraordinary time for us! :-)
Full version of the game will be available in the coming months. Please keep in mind that we are open to any feedback. With your help we can improve and enhance various elements of the game.
