The Painscreek Killings have received numerous positive reviews from the community, and we decided to dedicate a video to them! We weren't able to put everyone's reviews in it, but rest assured we appreciate them all :)
Thank you all for your love and support, and have a wonderful 2018!!
12/29/2017 patch notes
Here’s a list of things that were patched/implemented:
1. Removed the bounce light effect from player’s flashlight to avoid frame rate drop issue.
2. Implemented 4K resolution as an option (no 4K textures included at this point).
3. Fixed a few lines in the Steam achievement script.
Note: This is probably the last patch for this year. We still have quite a number of things to do for 2018, such as controller implementation, localization, and a few others which we will disclose as the time nears. We are grateful for the community support and feedback, and hope to provide a better gaming experience for our current players and any detective mystery fan. Till then, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! :)
12/28/2017 patch notes
Here’s a list of things that were patched/implemented:
1. Removed bounce light effect from flashlight to reduce frame rate drop issue for some players.
2. Fixed Hospital’s staircase to prevent ‘fall through game world’ issue.
3. Fixed Hospital’s front reception desk disappearing issue.
4. Removed website info for letters that are in the 1970s.
12/20/2017 patch notes
Here's a list of things that were patched/implemented:
1. Optimized the Mansion and Hospital scenes to have better frame rates. We replaced the Unity terrain and grass in those scenes with 3D mesh. High-res textures were removed and replaced with slightly lower-res textures without affecting the atmosphere/look of the game.
2. Improved loading speed when switching between scenes during gameplay.
3. Fixed game bugs that resulted from the optimizing process.
4. Fixed game content with incorrect info.
5. Inserted a delay in-between background music to avoid constant repetition.
6. Fixed the Steam achievements. Players who achieved 'Completionist' will also unlock 'Truth Revealed'. For players who want to unlock 'You're Fired' achievement, you will have to start a new game. Be sure to back up the saveData.txt file before starting over if you'd like to keep your current save data.
We are currently working hard on controller implementation. Unfortunately, there were issues regarding the overall feel of it and not having enough buttons to integrate all game actions, and it's taking more time than we expected. We hope to remedy the issues soon.
Optimization patch coming soon! Plus, announcing 'The Making of The Painscreek Killings' blog series
We are currently in the final stages of optimization and will be releasing a patch for it soon. In the meantime, join us on our blog as we talk about the making of The Painscreek Killings, illustrating the problems we faced, the breakthroughs we had, and how it developed from an idea to a finished product. We hope it can benefit anyone currently developing a murder mystery detective game similar to ours, or a story-based walking simulator in general.

10/30/2017 patch notes.
Here a list of things that were patched/implemented:
1. Fixed a bug where keybinds were not recognized.
2. Re-scripted the way scenes are loaded/unloaded to reduce RAM strain. This should prevent PCs with 8GB RAM from crashing when loading between heavy scenes.
We are currently hard at work with asset optimization, namely the Hospital and Mansion scenes. We are also cleaning our scripts to reduce garbage collection and memory leaks. Kindly bear with us as we try to make the game experience better for our players.
Note: Regarding the Steam Achievements, some of them are still buggy and are being looked at. However, the ending achievements should now be unlockable.
10/8/2017 patch notes.
Here a list of things that were patched/implemented:
1. Fixed Hospital's light switch bug which, when accessed, caused the power unit to malfunction.
2. Fixed incorrect date of birth on Vivian's tombstone.
3. Removed a metal blue cabinet inside Oliver's Photo Lab which created collision problem for some players, causing them to be 'pushed off' and fall off the game world.
Note: To rectify issue #3, we tried to implement 'safety nets' in all scenes so players who fell off the game world will be moved to the starting point of that scene. Unfortunately, it caused more problems, such as not being able to go down the well and having the message in the sewer that said "We are sorry that you encountered a game breaking bug" despite the game still running fine. In the end, we removed all the 'safety nets'.
For anyone who falls off the game world, simply select 'Quit' (do NOT select 'Save and quit'). Then start the game again and everything will be fine. Should you accidentally click on 'Save and quit', just let us know and we will help remedy your situation.
10/5/2017 patch notes.
Here a list of things that were patched/implemented:
1. A few typos found in some diaries.
2. A bug that some players encountered with doors that are locked from the other side.
3. Depth-of-field is now disabled with a new install. For existing players, you can disable it in the options menu if you prefer not to have the 'blurry' effect.
4. Bloom can now be toggled on or off in the options menu.
5. Added 2560 x 1440 resolution.
Note: We are still in the process of optimizing the game and unfortunately, will take awhile. We did remove unused and hidden assets which, when tested on our slower computer, led to improved loading time between the game’s heavier scenes, and slightly better frame rate for the Hospital. We cannot guarantee these improvements for everyone, but for those who do, we hope it presents you with a better gaming experience.
Game endings Steam achievements temporarily disabled.
As you may know, some players encountered the black screen problem at the end of the game. After numerous tests and checking through our scripts, we were still unable to reproduce the problem.
This seems to happen only to some players. We do not know how many players are affected by it. Since each ending is tied to its own achievement, we decided to disable them in hope that the black screen issue can be bypassed. This way, players can at least see their grades at the end of the game.
We apologize for doing so until a solution has been found, and appreciate your patience for the time being.
Update: Other than the endings, all other achievements can still be unlocked.
