Simspiration: A Brilliant Color Story Found in the Architecture of Mexico
Local YucatĂĄn photographer Joe Santana loves shooting his regionâs architecture, and he chooses each location for its color and history. In Mexicoâs YucatĂĄn, buildings and structures can be found in single shades of pinks, yellows, reds, blues, greens and oranges⌠bold colors are everywhere. He finds inspiration in these vibrant palettes that connect back to the past, and the YucatĂĄn Peninsula has a long history.

El Pinar mansion in MĂŠrida
The capital of the Mexican state of YucatĂĄn, MĂŠrida, might be known as âThe White Cityâ â a moniker thatâs attributed to its white limestone and level of cleanliness â but the colorful hues found on buildings are ubiquitous. El Pinar, a cotton candy pink colonial mansion that dates back to 1915, is one of the most famous. It represents MĂŠridaâs golden era, when a natural fiber called henequen made a fortune for many in the industry.
The combination of lemon yellow and ocean blue on a colorful street of MĂŠrida
Additional color inspiration can be found by simply walking around the capitalâs historic downtown. Architects in Mexico commonly use bright, cheerful colors that stand out on the facades of stucco buildings. Pastel lavender, blue and green structures border those painted in vivid yellow, orange and red tones, but there are no rules, such as this lemon yellow house with an ocean blue door.
The Stuccowork technique dates back to the ancient Mayans, who built their impressive structures with limestone and decorated with lime stucco. Today, many of these contemporary buildings made with smooth stucco are painted over in saturated, traditional colors that contrast the sky, evoking a picturesque scene.
Ramp up of colorful buildings of MĂŠrida in yellow, blue and lavender Magical Town (Pueblo Magico) Izamal YucatĂĄn, also known as the âYellow Cityâ
About 45 miles east of MĂŠrida is Izamal, a Magical Town known for its sunny yellow architecture. Almost every single building in Izamal is painted yellow! In the Maya era, nearly 2,000 years ago, religious pilgrims worshiped the Sun god Kinich Ahau here; later on, the Spanish erected the Convent of San Antonio de Padua, a Franciscan monastery, where a Maya temple once stood. In a chicken or egg quandary, itâs unknown whether the convent or town were the first to be painted yellow, or even why. Some speculate the color is a nod to the Mayan deity, while others believe the color honored Pope John Paul IIâs visit in 1993.
Convent of San Bernardino - Valladolid,YucatĂĄn The Calzada de los Frailes â Valladolid YucatĂĄn
A little further on is Valladolid, YucatĂĄnâs third-largest city, also considered a Magical Town, known for its fabulous restaurants and cafes. The beautiful Calzada de los Frailes dates back to the 16th century, features pastel-colored buildings and is one of the best streets to experience boutique shops, restaurants, sidewalk bars and cafes along a cobbled road. "The colors of Yucatan inspire, because it is the land of pink lagoons, of waters that shine at night, of the emerald sea, of green jungles, of blue cenotes, of yellow towns and terracotta houses, of multicolored art and food,â said Joe. âYucatan inspires with each of its sunrises and sunsets, with its streets, old houses and beautiful churches. As a photographer, it is magical to be able to capture each scene, convey the emotion that is felt when you âclick' the camera, in order to show that emotion to people from the photographerâs gaze." SIMSPIRATION: THE CRAFTSMAN-STYLE HOMES OF OAKLAND
Both the San Francisco Bay Area and Oakland, California are known for Craftsman-style homes, a design that evolved from the Arts and Crafts movement. The movement sprang up in 1850s Britain as a backlash to the Industrial Revolution and its mass-produced aesthetic, instead focusing on quality workmanship. Local photographer Amir Aziz grew up here, and cites West Oakland as one of his favorite spots because of its skyline views and historic architecture.
Sul sul Simmers! A spark of inspiration courtesy of the real world, through the lens of its local photographers. Like so many of you, we see inspiration all around, both inside and outside of our games. Welcome to Simspiration.
The Arts and Crafts movement evolved in the early 1900s thanks to American Gustav Stickley, one of the foremost Arts and Crafts movement.
Just as the Arts and Crafts movement rejected poorly made products, Stickley rejected the Victorian designs of his time, and helped pioneer Craftsman homes by publishing blueprints in his magazine. So what exemplifies a Craftsman-style home? âCraftsman-style to me is defined by the roof arches, the front porches and the inviting woodwork interior,â says Amir. Earth tones are another giveaway of a true Craftsman, but bright colors have also become popular choices.
Wood siding, brick or stucco accents, multi-pane windows and exposed rafters are additional exterior hallmarks, while interiors favor open floor plans and natural colors and materials â not unlike mid century modern design.
For Amir, âThe most visually appealing aspect of the Craftsman style to me is front porches,â he shares. He especially loves how some pillars lend an inviting, regal air, and indeed, wide, welcoming porches are a key signature for these cozy structures.
Of course, Victorian-style architecture is still found throughout, including the West Oakland section, and is readily identified by more ornamental features.
All of this in turn inspires Amirâs photography. âThe fabric of the city is embedded in how I live, work and play,â he shares.
He adds, âWhat makes Oakland special to me is the history, the blend of old and new, and all of the cultures and people that make it what it is. Oakland has international, yet small town recognition, with a big city attitude. Our civic pride is strong.â That said, he believes âthese characteristics invite people from all walks of life and all over the world to experience it.â

Update 3/24/2023
Hi Simmers,
Todayâs update is releasing on PC/Mac platforms only. We are addressing an issue in The Sims⢠4 Growing Together Expansion Pack where Sims who lost a tooth were intermittently having their skin tone, hair style, and clothing changed. We are temporarily putting this feature in time out by disabling the ability for Sims to lose a tooth as we prepare a fix to the underlying issue. Keep an eye on @TheSimsDirect for updates on the return of this feature. We are working to release this update to PlayStation and Xbox platforms as quickly as possible. In the meantime, check the guidance shared on Answers HQ on how to avoid this issue until this update becomes available on those platforms.

Bug Fixes
Growing Together
Losing a tooth will no longer intermittently cause the skin tone, hairstyle, and clothing of a Sim to be altered.
Sims who were already in the process of losing a tooth at the time of this update may still experience this issue.
The chance to lose a tooth will now end when a Child becomes a Teen.
