Torus Tuesday #14 - Sketches, Vignettes, and Seamless Transitions

This week's Torus Tuesday

This week, our lead software engineer Michael talks about our Sketch system, which is used extensively to create the various scenes within the game.

Hotfix 0.4.7a

A helpful citizen (Thanks, The Law!) noted a possible exploit to get abnormally fast clear times for the Proving Grounds challenge. That has been fixed.

Patch 0.4.7 - Mini-Update: "Pistoleros"

The Torus Syndicate - Update 0.4.7

Test your speed and precision against other players in the Proving Grounds, a new area focused on weapon specific challenges.

This Mini-content update adds a new area to the Academy, where the police practice their skills in a shooting course and try to get the best time. Face off against randomized targets, and prove yourself to be the fastest Gunslinger in metropolis!

Moving past the hustle of our early access release, the team is now focused on creating new content.

Our biggest goal right now is to extend the replayabilty of The Torus Syndicate, by taking the core mechanic of fighting enemies, taking cover, and moving between areas, and applying different parameters around it to create new modes that deliver more of the core experience.

To that effect, we’re building 2 new modes; Survival, where enemies continuously attack in greater and more advanced numbers until the player loses, and Time Trials, where players complete various challenges to get the best time or the highest score.

We’ll be showcasing more of Survival mode in the coming weeks, but right now, we have a sneak peak of the first Time Trial Level:

In this challenge, players will shoot at pop-up targets and compete for the best time.

The new area will come with new achievements and Steam Leaderboard support.

Target positions are randomized each time, requiring quick reflexes over memorization.

This update should be available to play sometime this week. We’re excited to see how quickly our players can complete the course!

Patch 0.4.6

The Torus Syndicate Update 0.4.6

Achievements are here! We also made some tweaks to the interface, and added a thing in the title screen.

Achievements
- We added the beginnings of the achievement system with some fun little things you can do to get them. More to come!

Interface
- Added a low ammo warning when there is less then 20% ammo in the gun.
- Some players were having trouble when they're out of SMG ammo. We've made the text more clear
- Removed the bright floor boundries. Scenes are now 7% more immersive.
- Moved the spawn point of new SMG ammo to a more accessible location. Let us know if it's better then before!

Bug Fixes/Improvements:
- Machine Gun Joe spends way too much time throwing grenades and not much time Machine Gunnin'. The Bureau of Appropriate Bad guy names have filed a formal complaint, and as such, Machine Gun Joe now spends slightly more time Machine Gunning.

Patch Notes 0.4.5

- Reloading V3.0:
- Players now have a visible "Ammo belt" that they can see. Pick up new ammo from the belt by bringing the off-hand to the belt. Gripping is not required. Let us know what you think!

- Grenades:
- New players are unaware that grenades can be destroyed by shooting at them. We added a very visible warning the first time this happens to teach this mechanic.

Bug Fixes/Improvements:
- Fixed a bug where the throwable powerup does not give more powerups if the amount reaches 0.
- Made some dialogue more readable in the tutorial scene at the Gun range.
- Fixed issue where the handgun could obstruct vision
- Updated the Tutorial to reflect new changes to the reloading system.

Patch Notes 0.4.4

- RPG Enemy in Level 2 will always hit their mark
- Added missing object in Title Scene.
- Added a warning when play area is detected to be under recommended limits.
- Minor adjustments to enemy animations
