The whole team is very excited to announce that The Wreck now has a release date: March 14, 2023. Starting this date, you will be able to help Junon overcome one of the worst days of her life.
We've put together a brand-new trailer to celebrate this announcement. You can see it just below.
Only 27 days left to go, and we can't wait to read your feedback about our game! See you on March 14th, and don't forget to add the game to your wishlist to be informed as soon as it's available.
The Wreck isn't even released yet, but professional juries are already praising its quality. Just recently, the fine folks at the Independent Games Festival, one of the most well-known and respected video game events in the world, decided to give the game an honorable mention for excellence in narrative. We spent a lot of time and effort developing the game's story and trying to do justice to the issues it deals with. So it's always nice when someone recognizes the quality of our work. And the other games selected are also of the highest quality - we are overjoyed to share this award with such great titles. The Wreck is part of the AdventureX selection
AdventureX is an event that we at The Pixel Hunt really enjoy. Indeed, we participated to the 2017 edition with Bury Me, My Love, and it was, for us, a very nice experience. That's why we are very happy to do it again in 2022, with The Wreck. And as always, we'll be in very good company, surrounded by the cream of the crop of independent games of the moment that put storytelling at the heart of their gameplay.
And Adventure X is also a series of conferences given by experts in the field, and a program guaranteed 100% exciting. So if you're in London this weekend, don't hesitate to come and say hello! But don't forget to get your ticket before.
The Wreck is part of the Day of the Devs in-person showcase!
Created by legendary indie studio Double Fine and high-end goodie store Iam8bit, Day of the Devs is a cross-platform collaborative celebration of independent games and developers. For their 10th anniversary, they're returning with an event at a physical location, which will take place tomorrow at Midway in San Francisco. And The Wreck is very excited to be a part of it!
The event is completely free to attend, but you must book a ticket here.
The Wreck is selected as a finalist of this year's Indie X!
Indie X, the most important video game showcase in Portugal, returns this year with a selection of 50 finalists... Including The Wreck!
The event lasts from November 3rd to 9th, and Florent, from The Wreck dev team, will participate in a live chat about the game on November 8th. You can find more info on all the finalists here!
10 (more) random facts about the game
As you know, the release of The Wreck has been pushed back to early 2023. But to help you wait until then, here are 10 new anecdotes about the game!
#11: A lot of influences came into play when working on The Wreck, but the main one is a 1970 French film by Claude Sautet, Les Choses de la vie, in which the hero is... in a car crash.
#12: The Wreck's opening sequence's tune will be La Vérité, by Belgian rock band Vive la fête. To be honest we still haven't fully realized how lucky we are they trusted us with this gem.
#13: Initially, we wanted to play on the contrast between memories that would look dreamlike/weird and a "present day" crash scene with a way more realistic style. That didn't stop us from being idiots though.
#14: This is what concept arts for our first pitch deck looked like. It did a really good job presenting the mood we wanted to go with at the time, but it wouldn't work with what The Wreck has become today.
#15: Since we're talking about ways to present the project, here's the cover of the application we submitted for a grant. There are several opportunities for video games public funding in France, it's awesome!
#16: Olivia Wood and George Lockett were our writers for the game's 1st prototype. They wrote scenes that were engrossing, mysterious and funny, and one inspired our art director Alexandre Grilletta this cool key art.
#17: Narrative designers love graphs. They're an amazing tool for a lot of reasons, one of them being that they show you your story's pace. For instance, here's the whole plot for The Wreck in graph form!
#18: Graphs also are great for level design. In The Wreck, the player explores memories and finds clues that gradually give a better grasp of what happened. Here's what the game's first memory looks like on paper.
#19: The script for The Wreck is 38,312 words. Nothing near the over 115,000 words we wrote for Bury me, my Love, but longer than H. G. Wells' The Time Machine. And every single line is voiced, a first for us!
#20: The Wreck is a game that takes place in France, and we made sure for the writing to be very, very clear about that.
Release date postponed
In the very beginning, we were young and clueless and thought The Wreck would be released around spring 2022. Alas, we were too optimistic, of couse, and finishing the game as well as we wanted took more time, forcing us to push the release to Fall 2022. Now, we're ready to go! But in the meantime... one small (and VERY COOL) extra thing has been added to our todo list. What is it? We can't tell just yet. Soon! The consequence is that we have to move The Wreck's release date - once again. But this time, we can guarantee the game will be out by early 2023. Thanks a lot for your patience, we can't wait for you to play it!
10 random facts about the game
With The Wreck's release around the corner, we figured you might want to know more about the game. So here are 10 random facts!
#1: In 2017 Florent (our game designer) & his daughter had a car accident. The car was totaled but luckily everyone got out OK. This traumatic event was the initial source of inspiration for The Wreck.
#2: During (pre)production, our art director iterated a lot on how our main character, Junon, should look like. Here are 4 versions of her evolution over time. Which one's your fave?
#3: The Wreck's EULA on Steam is very important. We want everyone to read it. And don't even consider playing the game without agreeing with it first!
#4: We used Inkle Studios' Ink to write the script for The Wreck, and we spiced things up with emojis. They allow us to ▶️ pilot Unity's timeline, ⌚ set delays, change 🎥 cameras or 🤸 character pauses... and more!
#5: Wondering how much work it took for us to craft The Wreck? The answer is: A LOT OF WORK. Here's a clip of all the commits we did on the project's git. 1 line = 1 task. And that's not counting pre-production!
#6: We want The Wreck to look as nifty as possible, so we asked Tara Beaufils to animate The Pixel Hunt's logo (which was designed by Perceval Barrier, who also made the logo for the game !)
#7: The car Junon drives in the game is inspired by the glorious Volkswagen Golf Mk2. Initially, this detail was important story wise, but the reason why got lost along the way. Still, it looks pretty cool!
#8: The Wreck is not "just" a game. It's also - potentially - going to be a novel. If you're as excited by this idea as we are, you can express your interest here.
#9: To produce The Wreck, we first came up with a very rough version of the sequences we were going to use - pretty much akin to an animated storyboard. But things moved a lot between that and the actual game!
