‘Snow & Steam’ Update - December 15th, 2020

Check out our Discord, Facebook, Twitter, and Twitch to get the latest development news and updates.

Happy Holidays Torchlight friends!

We hope you are keeping warm this winter season (or cool, for those in the southern hemisphere)! We are so excited to finally bring you the ‘Snow & Steam’ update, which is full of feedback, suggestions, bug fixes, and improvements that we know you have all been waiting for!

This spicy update is sending chills down my spine... With a complete revamp for Forged and Fazeer, a whole new limited-time contract, and a slew of amazing new features and quality-of-life updates, this patch has something for everyone.

This update will come alongside a forced respec, so please remember to spend your points before you dive back into the frontier after updating to ‘Snow & Steam’.

WINTER THEMED CONTRACT, PETS, & FORT DECORATIONS

This Holiday tree will bring some festive feelings into your snow-covered forts!

We’ve added a new, limited-time, ‘Snow & Steam’ Contract with a large assortment of winter-themed pets and fort decorations! Among the list of items that can be obtained are snow based decorations for your fort, an Ugly Sweater Cat variant, and an assortment of consumable and currency based rewards. During this update, the recently added spooky pets will become unavailable to find on the frontier, but may return again after the ‘Snow & Steam’ season has passed.

You can view a list of all the newly added winter-themed fort decorations and pets down below in the detailed patch notes.

FORGED REWORK

Steam raises Movement speed and is spent on Basic Attacks and some skills.

The Forged class has received a major rework in this update. Not only will you notice new elements for the HUD, but several skills have been changed and the general approach for Forged has received a bit of a makeover to make it a more interesting and viable class.

“After reviewing feedback in Discord and our internal metrics, it was pretty clear that Forged was our least popular character.” Torchlight III Game Designer Michael May explained, “All the feedback, alongside our player data, painted a picture that showed us that the Forged low level skills felt solid, but the secondary higher level skills were lackluster.”

The team went back to the drawing board, reviewing the current mechanics and skills and how to improve the overall feel of the class. “Skills like Slug Shot, Uppercut, and the ‘half venters’ didn’t have a strong place in the Forged’s overall kit like we had hoped, and players often just use a Heat builder, a Vent skill (possibly both), and fill the rest with Relic skills.”

With a new HUD and mechanic designed based on increased movement speed, the team reworked several skills in order to accommodate the new resource for Forged, appropriately named “Steam”. Steam raises Movement speed and is spent on Basic Attacks and some skills. This has effectively expanded the capabilities of Forged, providing for more versatile builds, including those based round melee/basic attacks.

NEW LEGENDARY GEAR

Which cool new weapon brings chills to your spine, Glacier's Edge or The North Mace?

The winter season is also blowing in additional ice-sharp legendary weapons to the game. A new Mace, Sword, Shield, Focus, Staff, and armor set will be available to players to find on the frontier. These new Winterweave items are permanent additions to the game and can only be found by characters at end game levels (47-60).

This Forged is ready for the winter frontierland

In addition to all this new legendary gear, we’ve added a couple of new rare helms that will get you into the spirit of the season. You can find the entire list of new items and gear improvements/changes in detailed patch notes below.

FAZEER DUN’DJINN IMPROVEMENTS

Welcome to your Throne Fazeer!

Many improvements have come to Fazeer’s Dun’djinn including more variety of affixes, a revamped quest system (no more missing quest items!), and increased rewards/difficulty. Here are a few key takeaways from the big updates we have made to this end game feature:

  • Fazeer now appears in front of his lounge in your fort.
  • There are now Fazeer's Dungeons based on some of our hub areas: Firebelly Village, Acrid Plains, and Machineworks.
  • Most Fazeer's Dun'djinn checkpoints now have a greater variety of bosses: about 45 instead of 8 possible bosses, though you'll still need to fight the big bad bosses to earn the new trophies for progressing in Fazeer's Dun'djinn.
  • The gear that you get as you delve deeper into Fazeer's Dun'djinn will have a Challenge Bonus applied to all affixes, so there is better level 60 endgame gear the deeper you go, and you'll need it, as…
  • Damage from monsters increases the further you go into Fazeer's Dun'djinn, both increasing faster per level and stopping at a higher value than before.
  • Fazeer's Dun'djinn "set" affixes now apply to bosses, in addition to their own affixes.
  • Add new Dungeon affixes and five Fazeer Dun’djinn Trophies that are now obtained when reaching level 39, Level 83, Level 133, Level 191, and Level 251.

Additionally, we have revamped the way quest completion/drops work and besides a few quests that may need balance tweaking, this should resolve most (if not all) of the quest issues that have been plaguing Fazeer’s Dun’djinn.

STYLE STATION & FORT UPDATES

This Forged is ready for their big style update!

The Style Station will be available once you have unlocked your fort and will be able to transform your drabby, last-season duds into a fresh, new fashion statement. For a small fee of Gold you can now transform your gear to appear as other items found on the frontier. You can acquire new styles and dyes by picking up gear while out on your adventures to complete a large library of fashionable transmog options.

What will you hide down in your new fort basement?

Fort basements have been added to expand upon your current setup; now you can enjoy the extra space without worrying about having to cram everything you own all on the top floor. And while we are on the subject of forts...

Who is that giving us a chilly stare over the wall?

In addition to forts having new storage via the basement, you can now move your fort decorations vertically, which means you can now place objects on top of other objects with ease. No more candles just laying all over the floor!

Which favorite pet will get to sit on your pet perch and rug?

Another amazing update is that your pets can now be displayed in your fort! Use a pet bed or pet perch to display your favorite frontier friends in your fort!

PET ENHANCEMENTS

Goblin’s know I’ve desperately needed this feature in my Ridiculous playthroughs.

We’ve made improvements to pets including a potion fetch system, impressive pet cages (which guarantee a rare or better pet), and several more pet skills...

Which new pet skill is your favorite?

Five new pets have been added to the game (2 new species, and 3 variations):

  • Frost Owl
  • Ugly Sweater Cat
  • Red-Nosed Retriever
  • Jolly Ferret
  • Reindeer

Additionally, these five new pet skills have been added to the game:
  • Assemble!: Your pet summons the spirits of a legendary owl, alpaca, wolf, and cat that deal 50% of your weapon damage, have 50% of your health, and have a lifespan of 12s.
  • Wet Kisses: Your pets attack have a 50% chance to slow enemies attack and movement speed by 30% on hiy got 6s.
  • Zoomies: Anytime your pet kills an enemy they get an 50% attack and movement speed bonus for 8s.
  • Dasher: Anytime your pet takes damage they gain 40% evasion for 6s (12s Cooldown)
  • Land Mines: Your pet does their business, leaving behind a surprise that taunts enemies to it. On death it explodes for 150% weapon damage in a small area.

ACT 1 IMPROVEMENTS, A NEW HIDDEN AREA, AND MORE!

Act 1 has received some updates to make it feel more diverse and unique.

There is also a large number of other improvements, including an Act 1 environment overhaul, Phase Beast revisions, performance updates, new colorblind and custom aspect-ratio settings (for widescreen users), and a new hidden area (with new enemies and boss). We’ve also fixed a large list of bugs (detailed below), some of which address itemization issues, skill problems, and other feedback that players have reported.

We will be keeping our eyes open for bug reports and feedback for this update and will prepare/release hotfixes for each platform as needed. In the meantime, we are extremely excited to finally see your snow-covered forts and fashion-forward frontier frocks! Until next time, see you in Trevail soon and remember, there is no secret alpaca level...

This update focuses on new winter-themed items and steamy updates for Forged and Fazeer’s Dun’djinn. WINTER THEMED CONTRACT, PETS, & FORT DECORATIONS

We’ve added a new ‘Snow & Steam’ Contract with a large assortment of winter-themed pets and fort decorations! Among the list of items that can be obtained are snow based decorations for your fort, an Ugly Sweater Cat variant, and an assortment of consumable and currency based rewards. This Holiday tree will bring some festive feelings into your snow-covered forts!

This time-limited contract will only be available during the holiday season, but the items will be permanently available to players who obtain them during that time.

This isn't the only thing making its way to Torchlight III this holiday season... Make sure to check out the link below for more details on the new gear, Fazeer updates, Forged rework, and many of the other things that will be coming to the 'Snow & Steam' update.

Developer Update: Game launched, spooky updates, and giving back!

Check out our Discord, Facebook, Twitter, and Twitch to get the latest development news and updates.

TORCHLIGHT III LAUNCH

October 13th was a big day for us; as a team we have been working on this game for more than four years and have watched it steadily, and sometimes quite rapidly, grow and change as a product. We are proud of the game we have created as we know we have provided countless smiles and hours of entertainment for many of those who have wandered into the frontier.

Max toasts the launch of the game while preparing to eat alpaca butt.

And while we are delighted with what our team has accomplished, we have recently taken a step back to look at the launch and development of Torchlight III. Our internal teams have created thoughtful, but sometimes difficult post-mortems that will help guide us with future updates for Torchlight III. We understand that while many believe Torchlight III to be a great game, there are parts of it that have received critical, but fair feedback; we recognize that there is work to be done in several areas of the game to bring it up to a more polished level.

We won’t be able to completely placate all of the critiques in one patch, but as we move forward we are working on ways to simplify and better our internal process so that we can make better decisions for the community, the game, and for ourselves as a team.

In this Developer Update, we discuss the launch of Torchlight III, the recent 'Gear 'N' Goblins' patch, current community concerns, and reveal details about the upcoming 'Snow & Steam' update.

Minor Patch - November 4th, 2020

Check out our Discord, Facebook, Twitter, and Twitch to get the latest development news and updates.

This hotfix originally occurred yesterday, but we missed posting the breadcrumb to Steam.

Good morning frontier fighters!

This morning we have a hotfix to address a few critical issues including fixing repeating quest issues that commonly occurred with the Luck Tree and left players with an excessive amount of sprouts in their fort inventory. Additionally we are fixing both spooky pets so they will start to drop now (as intended) and the Contracts that were accidentally replaced with older, incorrect data.

We are currently reviewing other critical issues and are compiling reported bugs and known issues for another larger, upcoming update.

Please continue to report bugs to http://tl3feedback.echtragames.com and to feedback@echtra.net so that we can further investigate and address them as time/priority permits - we really, really appreciate it!

We hope you all have a wonderful Wednesday and we’ll see you again in Trevail Point soon!

'Gear ‘N’ Goblins' Update - October 29th, 2020

Check out our Discord, Facebook, Twitter, and Twitch to get the latest development news and updates.

Happy Halloween-ish Torchlight family!

This spooky season had us eager to bring some fright into Torchlight! We are busy working on some larger content updates, but in the meantime, we wanted to drop a quick update with some fun new content for the season, along with some much-needed bug fixes.

NEW LEGENDARY GEAR

This Dusk Mage is showing off the latest Ancient Ember set and one of the two new legendary weapons.

There are EIGHT new legendary items in this update. Two new weapons, the ‘Lightning Baller’ and ‘Sword of the Lost Legion’, will join the Ancient Ember gear set as new legendary items that can only be found in Fazeer’s Dun’djinn.

THREE ADDITIONAL SPOOKY PET VARIATIONS

A hat on a cat and a pumpkin keg dog! How spoopy!

Three new pet variations (Midnight Cat, Spooky Retriever, Dragonling Spirit) are all waiting for you to rescue them in pet cages found randomly on the frontier. Look at them, they are all so bootiful!

SCARY FORT DECORATIONS

We’re coffin’ up new decorations to add to your fort.

Six scary new fort decorations have been added to the game! You can now obtain these from the random fort decoration bags found in the existing contracts (two decorations have been added to each contract). These new additions are a perfect fit for those who like to keep their space a little more on the macabre side.

TWO FRESHLY ADDED FAZEER DUN’DJINN AFFIXES

How will you fare against the Anchored Affix? Can you move forward without a movement skill?

These two new affixes have made their way to Fazeer’s Dun’djinn: Anchored and Essential. These affixes can be quite the Trick-or-Treat for unwary players.

BUY RESPECTACLES

And for a REAL treat! With this update you can now buy Respectacles in town at the potion vendors!

BUG FIXES & SKILL UPDATES

And to the scariest topic of all… bugs! In addition to the aforementioned content updates, we have fixed a multitude of issues, many of them related to skills and quests. We are still reviewing and working to resolve many of the issues that have been reported or continue to linger, and we will continue to post hotfix updates as they are readied.

UPCOMING UPDATES

We continue to toil and our cauldron is just starting to boil; when we have more information about the timeline and content for updates, we’ll be sure to post all the details. Until then, follow all of our social channels to find out about all things Torchlight III and until next time… happy haunting!

State of the Game Week 17

Check out our Discord, Facebook, Twitter, and Twitch to get the latest development news and updates.

Good morning Torchlight III Early Access community,

Today is a huge day - it’s the last step before we launch next Tuesday, October 13th, 2020. Today is the culmination of countless hours of design, development, testing, and community feedback.

We started this journey back all the way back in 2016 with four people and no office. Committed to getting the game in front of our players early in the development process, in November of 2018 we ran two Weekend Alpha events - where the game was quite rough and several design risks were on display. Then from March through December 2019 we were in Closed Alpha - with various big updates along the way. Listening to feedback, we completely remade several fundamental systems in Updates 1-9. Remember when skill progression was currency based? Or Relic Weapons that swapped out your equipped weapons and only had one power?

Then, in January 2020, we released Update 10 with some massive new content: the Sharpshooter joined the fray, and heroes began delving into the Echnonok mountain fastness of Act 3. We also announced that the game was renamed to Torchlight 3 and that our business model had changed. Happily, your response to that was resoundingly positive.

After announcing Closed Beta, we heard pretty clearly “You aren’t done yet!” You said that we needed better character customization and a better end game. So while we continued to fix bugs and work on launch-related projects, we also went back to adding features. The Legendarium helped with character customization. Difficulty Levels became a badge of honor. The end was released and will continue to see improvements post-launch. Meanwhile, we fixed thousands of bugs.

In June, we launched in Early Access on Steam to reach a broader and fresh set of eyes. We had a rough 48 hours, as the somewhat larger-than-anticipated crowd brought our servers to a halt. Ouch. Lessons were learned, and fixes applied. But after that, we were able to focus on everything you were telling us. Whether your feedback was harsh or effusive praise, we pushed hard to vastly improve the game, complete with more skills slots and points, advanced options/settings, and more content. We finished and released the Echonok Mountain act, Fazeer’s Dun’djinn end-game system, and the Relic Subclass update that completely changed how you build your character, alongside updates to Lifebound items, class skills, and gameplay performance. We tuned and re-tuned. We took your bug reports and feedback to heart, and hope that our progress during Early Access has been a testament to our commitment to you, the Torchlight community.

But we’re not done yet; we know that a game never really feels complete and we are extremely excited to share what is coming up for Torchlight III as we move towards launch and beyond.

We’ll be hanging out in Discord on launch day (October 13th) if you want to come chat or ask questions directly to our team. We also hope you can come join us on Friday, October 16th at 1pm Pacific Time for our official ‘Launch Party Dev Stream’ on Twitch. It should be noted that this is the last Early Access ‘State of the Game’ we will be posting, but our updates will continue post-launch in more dedicated and less frequent developer blogs.

Thank you again to everyone who has created content, reported bugs, submitted feedback, posted alpaca pictures, sent us tweets, hung out in Discord and our Twitch streams, moderated our channels, and have just generally sent us positive vibes during the development of Torchlight III.

We truly could not do this without you and we’re ready to start a whole new adventure on the frontier with you soon.

- Max
