"Tornuffalo - Full-Body Action with Vive Trackers" update

Today the Full-Body version of Tornuffalo is accessible through the Steam DLC interface. It's free to owners of Tornuffalo.

(The Steam page for the DLC also has a video about attaching a Tracker to your shoe.)

After downloading Tornuffalo and the full-body DLC, choose whether you want to play the game normally or with Vive Trackers when you launch the game.

It's designed for 3 Vive Trackers. You can play it with just 2 but it wasn't optimized for that, so the body effect isn't as good. (Keep in mind that "Vive Trackers" are different than controllers, so you need at minimum a headset and two controllers and two feet trackers to play the full-body version.)

The gameplay of the full-body version is different than the regular version. In the full-body version you get to use both of your hands and feet to kick and hit stuff. In the regular version of Tornuffalo, you only use one hand.

I recommend that beginners play the "Big Hammer" bonus mode first.

Play Tornuffalo with your whole body if you have 3 Vive Trackers!

The "Full-Body Action" version of Tornuffalo is available to try out. You need 3 Vive trackers to make it work: Clip one Vive tracker onto your belt on your back, and strap the other two tightly onto your feet using your shoelaces.

UPDATE: You can now try the beta with only 2 Vive Trackers, one on each foot... but it's sort of a hack, it wasn't really designed for just two trackers.

The body isn't perfect, but I think it's pretty good considering the limitations.

It's in a beta branch right now. After the game is installed, right-click on "Tornuffalo" in the games list in your Steam Library, then go to the "Betas" tab and choose "fullbody." I'm planning to soon make this version accessible through Steam's DLC system--free to owners of the game.
Body tracking is available now through the "Full-Body Action with Vive Trackers" DLC!

Also, I highly recommend playing it with the "Big Hammer" bonus mode if you're just getting started with the game.

Merry Christmas! I made "BuffalSnow Blizzard," a local multiplayer party version of the game

Want to play Tornuffalo at a holiday party with your friends? Now your friends can take turns controlling bison from your PC while you're in VR!

Installing is Easy

UPDATE: You can now activate this version of the game by installing BuffalSnow Blizzard. It's free for anybody who's bought Tornuffalo.

A Blizzard of Buffalo

In 2016, the world was rocked by a freak weather phenomenon known as the "Tornuffalo." As fall turned to winter, you thought you had survived nature's worst.

Now, in the darkest days of winter, a terrible blizzard is sweeping the country.

Shivering in the storm, you hear the patter of hooves above you. Through the snow, you see a shimmering red light soaring through the air. What a jolly sight! Could it be Rudolph? No. It's Garth, the red-nosed buffalo. And the Buffalizzard is only just beginning.

Party Rules:

One player puts on the VR headset. The other players take turns controlling bison from the computer. As each buffalo flies by, church bells ring and the computer player passes the keyboard/gamepad to the next person. When the VR player dies, the person who was controlling the computer at that time gets to be the VR player!

(Note that the computer players don't get a separate view, they control the bison while watching the VR display on the computer screen)

Final Notes:

"Bonus Modes" still work in this party version, and for beginners, I recommend playing in "Big Hammer" bonus mode.

Play Tornuffalo on the Oculus Rift

If you have an Oculus Rift with Touch controllers, you can play Tornuffalo! In the game, select "Graphics and Settings" from the start menu, and change "Controllers" to "Touch Right" or "Touch Left."

(Oculus users can still play using the Vive setting, but setting it to Touch affects the in-game grip position.)

Tornuffalo is designed for full room-scale and beyond, but players with smaller play spaces can likely get some enjoyment out of it. Check out the "Big Hammer" bonus mode for gameplay that relies more on smacking things out of the way, and less on dodging and ducking.

Tornuffalo uses SteamVR for Oculus Rift compatibility.

Whoosh!

I wanted to boost the sensation that objects are actually flying past you, so now you might hear a "whooshing" sound when some of the debris fly near your head in the game. I also updated the look of the "Tornuffalo" title on the start menu.

Latest update includes "Big Hammer" bonus mode where smashing the gems slows time

  • "Big Hammer" bonus mode gives you a big cinder-block hammer to smack things with. Smashing the gems in this mode makes you briefly enter "slow motion."
  • Your top 3 scores for each of the bonus modes are now saved and displayed after dying in that bonus mode.
  • You can now display a "left arm" instead of the right arm for the virtual arm. Although I admit that the left arm is more of an afterthought and not as refined as what I did for the right arm.

New "In-Bounds" Bonus Mode and an optional outline on the ground of your play area

The latest update is aimed at people who are a little squeamish about bumping into the walls and ceiling while playing.

I introduced an "In-Bounds Mode" that draws a bright border on the ground around your SteamVR play space--and in this mode, the gems tend to fly closer to the middle of your play area. There's also a slightly visible "wireframe" box around your play area in this mode, to better help you keep track of your position in the real world.

You also now have the option to have boundary lines on the ground around your play area in standard gameplay mode, although the lines are not as vibrant as in the "In-Bounds" bonus mode.

Let me know if you have any problems with those new features!

I also slightly shrank the player's hammer for all modes (in my previous update I updated where the player can get hit at, which I believe increased the favorability of deflecting things rather than dodging them, and I believe this tweak to the hammer will slightly increase the favorability of dodging.)
