Tour de France 2022

Patch Notes - Version 1.05.01

Hello riders!

We are thrilled to announce that the next update for Tour de France 2022 is now available to download. Following the end of the Tour de France we have worked on updating many features following the results such as riders' ratings, team jerseys and resolving some bug fixes reported by the community.

Furthermore, we want to address an issue that won't be resolved in today's patch: the infinite loading screen. Since you have reported us this problem we have tried to resolve it and haven't been able to gather enough data on why this is happening, until now.

Today's update will bring a change to the issue - it will now crash your game (and therefore open the Crash Report Window) with this we will receive the appropriate data from the crash report and therefore we should have more information to work on fixing it in a upcoming update. This isn't an immediate solution but a necessary step in this direction!

You can learn more about the content of this update through the Patch Notes below.

Tour de France 2022 Feature Highlight: Race of the Moment

Hello Riders!

For some time now we've been working on a mode that will have you compete against each other, to find out who plays our game the best. With this in mind, and to create a game mode that lets you see how you compare to the rest of the world, we are pleased to announce the addition of the Race of the Moment in Tour de France 2022.

Race of the Moment Trailer

Dev Blog

In this brand-new game mode, included for the first time in Tour de France 2022, we will be giving you the chance to take part in temporary races. The routes will only be available for a limited time and will be updated weekly (and even more often at certain times of the year so the available routes match the cycling season).

During this period, your objective will be to achieve the best possible performance over the proposed route, which might be traditional or involve stages. The objective will depend on the race. You may need to finish the race as quickly as possible, score the most points in the mountain ranking or achieve the best team time.

Each Race of the Moment will have an online player ranking, using your best recorded performances. You earn points just by taking part in the races. You will earn a point bonus that depends on how high up in the ranking you finish, as well as badges for participation and results. The points you earn each week will be used to compile the monthly and annual leaderboards.

The Race of the Moment is therefore a competition between players with rules specific to the mode. There is a set level of difficulty, and there are no customisation settings, so everyone is playing on a level field. You will not be able to save the game in the middle of a stage either, so it will be impossible to create a save point right before a critical moment. If you do something wrong, you will have to restart the stage from the beginning! The game will be automatically saved when you reach the finish line of each stage. Last but not least, every player will be using the same team, and you will not be able to replace any of the riders. It will be up to you to decide on the best strategy to adopt and see if it is more effective than what the other players are doing.

The Race of the Moment will be included in the game when it is launched, but the first races that will count towards the annual ranking will begin on Friday 1 July, at the same time as the Grand Départ of the 2022 Tour de France. On your marks!

Tour de France 2022 Feature Highlight: Freshness

Hey Riders!

With every new edition of the game, we discuss the best ways to improve the behaviour of opponents so that it better reflects what you see in real-world top competitions. Over the last few years, race plans have changed a lot. While you can still see classic strategies of early morning breakaways controlled by the peloton in the final kilometres, at the World Tour level, we also often see very open races where the favourites go on the attack long before the finish line.

Our goal this year was to allow users to break away from these preset scenarios more easily with the option to start attacks earlier. To achieve this, one of the first big changes we made was to what we call the "physio"; in other words the rules that determine the riders' energy consumption. This is crucial as the energy available is a major factor in your opponents' decision making. We had to change these rules because they didn't allow attacks from further away. Even the top "engines", like Mathieu Van der Poel, Wout Van Aert and Tadej Pogacar, were not able to make sustained solo attacks because they lacked energy compared to their opponents. To make such solo feats possible, we have added a new concept to energy consumption: Freshness.

Freshness is based on Stamina and Resistance stats and it influences the maximum amount of energy available to a rider. Stamina affects the maximum amount of the blue gauge, while Resistance affects the maximum amount of energy in the red gauge. The higher the stat, the more the rider can keep their maximum energy high during the race. For example, a rider with only 60 Stamina will see their blue maximum energy decrease after 100km or so, whereas a rider with 75 Stamina can stay at their maximum beyond this distance. The point at which Freshness decreases is greatly affected by the race scenario. The more intense and challenging the pace for riders, the more effect Freshness has early in the race. In other words, only the riders with the greatest Stamina and Resistance can perform well from afar, provided that the race has been tiring enough that the Freshness of teammates has depleted, and they can no longer keep up the pursuit.

This new feature required multiple changes to behaviour so that the riders, especially the leaders, can take advantage of this new energy functionality. Changes were also made to the rules behind pursuit and cooperation. The pursuit rules have been "softened" so that there are more frequent let-ups after attacks and riders now "look at each other" to see who agrees to cooperate, just like in real life. This benefits attacking players, who can now gain more ground. The cooperation rules in breakaways have been improved so that attacking players are not doomed to failure because of breakaway team-mates who refuse to relay far from the finish line, even though they could.

Feature Highlight - Race Incidents

Hello Riders!

For some time now we have been thinking about how to manage falls and illnesses in Tour de France. Just as in real life, these are significant factors that can affect the outcome of the race. What racing fan did not feel disappointed when Thibaut Pinot was forced to withdraw due to injury in 2019? Would Tadej Pogacar have won for a second time in 2022 if Primož Roglič had not fallen? Falls and illnesses are therefore major aspects of cycling in their own right, but how should they be integrated in the game without frustrating and angering players who see their leader forced to withdraw after becoming ill or falling? Rather than impose set rules that might bother you, we have decided to leave you free to choose by adding settings that regulate the occurrence of falls and illnesses during the race. The objective is to enable you to customise your races as you wish.

First of all, let's talk about falls. There have been two types of falls in the game for a few years now: when the player's rider falls and when an opponent falls. There is no other consequence when the player's rider falls other than a loss of time, and opponents fall so rarely that it might never even occur.

Now, though, when your rider falls and depending on your initial settings, an injury might result and the rider might be forced to withdraw (or, like before, be able to set off again with no consequence other than losing time). In the event of withdrawal, you must continue the race with another rider from your team. In the event of injury, the rider continues the race, but the maximum effort is limited. The extent of the limit depends on how serious the injury is. A slight injury has a minor effect on the maximum effort for a few minutes, while a serious injury prevents the rider from attacking and has consequences that extend beyond the current stage. Even though riders automatically recover between stages, the most serious falls have effects that last several days.

You can also choose to enable or disable other riders’ falls, just like with your rider. If you enable them, you can pre-determine their frequency and decide who is affected (only your opponents, or the members of your team as well). In the same way, you can decide whether or not rider falls lead to injuries and withdrawals.

Now to the subject of illnesses. Just as with falls, you can decide whether to enable illnesses and you can determine their frequency. Illnesses randomly affect random riders (everybody or just your opponents, depending on your settings). Just like with falls, when a rider becomes ill, his maximum effort decreases according to the seriousness of the illness. Illnesses develop between stages, but, unlike with falls, which the rider gradually recovers from over time, an illness can worsen to the point where the rider is forced to withdraw.

In addition to handicapping the riders, falls and illnesses also have other consequences, as injured or ill riders are unable to reveal their race-day condition. Therefore, even a slight injury or minor infection can affect your strategy. Opponent injuries and illnesses are only revealed when they are sufficiently serious. It’s up to you to keep an eye on your opponents' performances to see if they are being affected by a fall or if they are hiding an illness.

As far as rider performance is concerned, a new setting is being introduced this year: “Preparation”. The goal of this new option is to make the race results a bit more surprising than usual. When this option is enabled, some of the riders will be in better condition than usual, and, conversely, some will perform less effectively. To add variety, this option can affect any rider in the peloton.

Settings are available for all game modes except the Race of the Moment. Settings for player falls can be adjusted independently for player 1 and player 2 in Co-op and Versus modes.
