Announcing my next game - This Grand Life

I'd like to announce a new game I've been working on, a personal finance simulator inspired by Sierra's Jones In The Fast Lane. In the game you create a character, manage their money and help them achieve their life goals.



Your life is divided into weeks. You try to accomplish as much as you can each week while economic conditions and special events create interesting choices to think about. Do I go to work this week, or take part in the Hot Dog Eating competition at the park? Should I spend time looking for a better job, or stick with my current job until economic conditions improve?

A patch has been released with the following changes:


  • Number of objectives given to player gradually increases based on prosperity
  • Added displaying of objects inside food pit
  • Moved more English words into data files
  • Fixed foreign tribe size going below zero

A small patch has been released with some UI conveniences:

  • Automatically re-scale UI for first time players if screen width less than 1920
  • Changed "influence area" to "tribal area"
  • Added warning notification when clicking on meeting point button but meeting point already assigned
  • Re-implemented flashing notifications at bottom
  • Added right-click to cancel task on crafting screen
  • Fixed down/up keyboard mapping incorrect

Version 1.07 is live

A patch has been released to fix animal aggression and improve useability:

<*>Modified check so low aggression animals need to be much closer to a threat before initiating combat
<*>Lowered threshold for weaker animal running away from stronger animal if stronger animal already fighting
<*>Fixed convection weather front causing too much rain at the start of every year
<*>Fixed crafting screen bouncing back to top when scrolled and craft task selected
<*>Split "Need an X equipment" thought into two variations based on if equipment is found
<*>Equipment/Clothing panel:

  • Added extra legend for "tick boxes = allowed" for clarity
  • Added tool-tip when hovering over each item name
  • Changed "Looking" to "Searching" for clarity
  • Clicking on a checkbox now opens up the query panel for that Pokian

<*>Query panel:

  • Added "Filter" label to query panel to make it more obvious option is present
  • Added "heals over time" to bruised/cut appendage tool-tip
  • Reversed order in thoughts tab so newest thoughts are at the top
  • Added some text colour changes for Pokian query panel to highlight important values more clearly
  • Clicking on the map menu to open the query panel now closes the map menu automatically

<*>Added tool-tip to Combat Mode button to indicate Non-Warriors ignore it
<*>Fixed Burin/Awl/Flint tool missing cooldown time when used as a weapon

Version 1.06 is live

A patch has been released to improve the crafting screen:

Release 1.06

  • Overhauled crafting panel:
    • Where available, materials are all assigned immediately when craft button clicked
    • Available materials list refreshes when a task is added/removed
    • Craft tasks show an exclamation mark warning when materials are missing
    • Clicking to craft an object now opens up a task query panel with information
    • Added more tool-tips

  • Reduced maximum buffalo herd size from 8 to 5


Version 1.05 is live

A patch has been released to improve stockpile creation and rebalance animal migration:

Release 1.05

  • Renaming stockpile automatically accepts new name without having to click "Rename" button now
  • Removed "Rename" button due to the above
  • Clicking on "New Stockpile" on Stock Panel immediately selects newly created pile
  • Automatically scale UI down if player selects smaller screen resolution (still manually adjustable)
  • Removed clothing "ghosting effect" so Pokians look cleaner
  • Removed excessive animal migration during Autumn
  • Increased number of times animals check for overcrowding when deciding to migrate
  • Added a very small chance animals migrate away without trigger, higher chance in Winter
  • Reduced hunger/thirst/sleep rate of animals and humans
  • Added buttons to Tribe Panel to make renaming Pokians feature more obvious
