Season 3: Inferno Saga - Survival 2.0 Updates on August 16
Tribes of Midgard Season 3: Inferno Saga launches on August 16 with a completely revamped Survival Mode!
Our goal is to create the ultimate Viking sandbox that blends our combined love for ARPGs, Survival games, and Norse mythology. Fans of both the quicker, Rogue-lite-inspired Surthrival gameplay of Saga Mode, as well as the slower, more exploratory pace of Survival Mode will feel equally served in updates moving forward.
Survival Mode has been fully rebuilt from the ground up to transform it into a more relaxed but equally exciting Tribes of Midgard experience. Some of the more time-pressure elements of Saga Mode have been stripped away. Say goodbye to the Endless Winter and Nightly Defenses, and say hiló to a variety of Helthings and monsters to hack and slash through in the wild!
The Survival 2.0 update now begins in a time before the Seed of Yggdrasil had a fully fleshed-out Village to call home. The Einherjar start off in the Sanctuary in a World without any Village, Walls, Constructions, or friendly Villagers to craft for you. Veteran Einherjar, Eira Foot-Crushed, is around to provide initial guidance (and protection!) on what you need to do - with help from some furry little friends along the way– see Catorials below!
We also had the absolute pleasure of being able to create an animated trailer to celebrate the new Survival Mode updates - check out our collaboration with Titmouse here!
So what does an Einherjar without a Village do? They start building! The Construction system was massively overhauled to allow players to create the exact homes they want. Not only in terms of features, with new capabilities like camera rotation and new Build Menu, but also in terms of content, with new Stairs, Doors, Pillars, Decorations, etc. as well as a wide variety of Crafting Stations for all the Builder Vikings out there.
This update to Survival Mode, as well as all content from previous Seasons, will also be included for free in the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch versions when Tribes of Midgard releases on those platforms on August 16.
It will also feature a number of changes to core gameplay, including:
Choose Your Own Adventure
Survival 2.0 is designed so you can play Tribes of Midgard at your own pace. There are many new features to accommodate this change in Survival Mode…but the biggest? There will no longer be a Village to defend every night! What else?
Days will last longer at 20 minutes each to give ample time before the night. Note that seasons will keep on alternating between summer and winter.
Helthings will spawn sporadically throughout the environment at night but will not attack the Seed of Yggdrasil. They are still tough to take down but offer dark Materials and XP when defeated. Make sure you’re prepared if taking a night-time stroll!
Each of the Jötnar have set spawn points located within enclosed Arenas that have to be entered in order to defeat them in open combat. This can be done at any time, and can be repeated with a greater challenge, provided you’re up for the task.
Crafting System
The crafting system in Survival has been entirely reinvented. With no Village or Villager vendors, you’ll need to rely on yourself and the trusty Allforge—a magical little Dwarven invention accessed from the Build Menu and placed anywhere, free of any Material costs—to progress and survive. The Allforge lets you repair Equipment for a standard Souls cost, and more importantly, instantly build as many Constructions, Crafting Stations, and Decorations as you can, anywhere on the map. Each player can only have one Allforge out at once, so simply craft it again to redeploy to a new position.
Once a Crafting Station has been built from the Allforge, it will show up in your Build Menu inventory. Use the Build Menu again to place the Crafting Station wherever you’d like and get crafting.
Need Tools to start chopping wood and mining iron? Use the Allforge to build a Tool Grinder and craft some Tools!
Are wolves getting a little too close for comfort? Use the Allforge to build a Weapon Furnace and fight them off!
Hurt yourself trying to sneak into a Dökkálfar Camp? Use the Allforge to craft a Meal Cauldron and get cooking with all new recipes to heal and buff your character!
Crafting Stations can be upgraded to unlock more powerful recipes and even entirely new Stations. They can be placed anywhere, including on the higher floors/stories built in your base. Once you get going, it’s only a matter of time before you have a Village of your own.
Saga Quests
Saga Quests act as overarching objectives for players to progress towards. The first several Saga Quests will have you hunting down the Jötnar in their Arenas. Upon their defeat, they will reward players' Materials to further progress in the World by unlocking powerful Crafting Stations, such as the Boat Dock, that will allow you to sail to new lands, loot better Materials, and take on greater challenges (even the Ancients themselves). Ancients (formerly known as Saga Bosses) are the almighty bosses that are introduced in each new Saga. There are powerful rewards for taking down the Ancients:
Sindri’s Foundry: Defeating Fenrir rewards players with a unique Construction that consumes unwanted Equipment and Runes for Souls. Invincible to damage and can be re-deployed at will like the Allforge.
Freyr’s Ship: Defeating Jörmungandr rewards players with the fabled Skíðblaðnir, a unique Drakkar ship. Invincible to damage, can be re-deployed at will, and is the fastest ship in the game.
Heimdallr’s Tower: Defeating the Inferno Ancient (name unknown… for now!) rewards players with a mighty Watchtower and garrisoned Archer. Just like a standard Watchtower, the Archer can be equipped with more powerful arrows. Unlike standard Watchtowers, however, this Archer is stronger by default, the tower is invincible to damage, and can be re-deployed at will.
Blessing Tree and Level Progression
With the Survival Update, Einherjar will choose their skills through an entirely new Blessing Tree. The Blessing Tree is unique to this game mode and allows for more freedom to pick and choose from the 90 Blessings available. With this change, the max Character Level is increased to 50 to give more skill combinations during the increased playtime per World.
Shared Character XP for upgrading Stations or activating Portals has been changed in favor of personal Character XP gains for exploring and continual building. Players will work together to build a community and adventure through the land of Midgard.
While playing Survival, your Viking will come across Season XP loot. Season XP has a chance to drop from any activity that will also net you Character XP, such as defeating enemies and harvesting resources. Some methods guarantee large amounts of Season XP to drop, like defeating powerful enemies or raiding Camps.
Season XP is automatically attributed to your Account Profile in real time and contributes to your Season progression, no need to turn it in or Abandon your World.
The World
The Worlds generated in Survival 2.0 are larger than anything seen previously and have been custom-tailored to the game mode. Players start on a large, central continent and will be able to explore the Open Seas as they progress through the early steps of their adventure. Due to the increased player agency over exploration and means of travel, managing where your base is located will be key. There are a number of options to safely expand your dominion via crafting at the Allforge:
Beds: Beds can be claimed to serve as Respawn points, which will come handy when facing your demise (being an Einherjar does not make you invincible!)
Bonfires: Bonfires will help keep you warm in cold climates so long as you deposit Branches to keep the fires alive. Very useful when landing on a cool Ash Beach in the dead of night.
Shrines: Shrines act as Fast Travel points, allowing you and your Tribe to build your own travel network throughout Midgard!
Construction 2.0
We’ve reworked the Construction inventory to be more modular and significantly more flexible. Everything is scaled to fit a 1x1x1 area for increased interconnectivity. In addition to Grounds, Fences, and Ramps, new Construction pieces are available including Walls, Pillars, Roofs, and Doors, among many others. Each Construction comes in three tiers with different levels of strength and material requirements, ranging from twig/thatch and wood to slate/stone.
The camera is able to be rotated while in the Build mode, allowing the careful placement of Constructions while crafting your perfect mead hall! Pieces are able to be placed along the Z-axis for up to four levels, allowing for some cozy building while the threats are kept at bay.
Upset with where you’ve placed a particular Construction? Deconstruct freely with more accuracy with the Mallet. The Mallet is now triggered by default when in Build mode and simply highlighting a Construction will allow you to dismantle it. Deconstructing your Stations will return the Materials used to build them if you ever feel you want to entirely pack up and build out somewhere new. Further, this Mallet mode also gives the option to repair said Constructions. What a magical Mallet.
Tutorial Cats (Catorials?)
Freyja’s chatty cats from the Tutorial, Sóleyra and Mániklo, make a triumphant return in the update on August 16!
To help guide you through a number of introductory systems in Survival 2.0, one of Freyja’s cats, changing depending on the context, will spawn when you interact with certain triggers in the environment, providing further context and even some tips as you get started on your adventure. They may be cheerful and snarky, but they're talking cats!

Tribes of Midgard Season 3: Inferno Saga comes to all platforms on August 16!
Hiló Vikings,
Today we have a lot of exciting news to share with you! We have been hard at work behind the scenes and now we can finally announce that Tribes of Midgard Season 3: Inferno Saga will be coming to PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch on August 16th!
Season 3 is massive (our biggest update by far) delivering game-changing content, including a new Saga Quest, Saga Boss, Volcanic Spire Biome, Spear weapon (yes, so many of you guessed right!), Fishing, and more. Various improvements to combat, more accessibility settings, and plenty of quality of life additions (many suggested directly by you!) will also be part of this free update. Check out our Roadmap here!
As we’ve mentioned in previous Dev Blogs, this Season will also feature a complete revamp of Survival Mode! Keep on reading as we’ll dive into a bit more of what that means below. :)
Still something we can’t believe we’re finally saying - on August 16th, Vikings on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch join the fight against Ragnarök! At launch, they will have access to the new Saga and revamped Survival Mode and will be receiving all future updates for free alongside the other platforms. We look forward to sharing launch timing for specific regions as we get closer to the launch date!
Also launching on August 16 will be updates to BOTH Saga Mode and Survival Mode!
Inferno Saga
It’s getting HOT in Midgard. 🔥 Our new Season features a brand-new Saga Quest: Inferno. The Saga Boss awaits you in the heart of the Volcanic Spire, a location you maaay recognize from an early teaser!
The new Saga Boss’ followers have set up Outposts across the land, hoarding the Múspelite materials, which can be used to open the Gateway to the Spire. Once there, you’ll have to endure rising temperatures, lava rivers*, and fiery foes as you seek out this new threat.
*we don’t recommend adventuring Vikings swim in the lava rivers
Survival 2.0
Survival Mode is being completely rebuilt for those looking for a more relaxed Viking Survival experience - an alternative to the urgency you’d normally experience with the coming of Ragnarök in Saga Mode.
It focuses on life long before the Village and the Seed of Yggdrasil came to be. You won’t be alone - our Viking warrior Eira Foot-Crushed will be your guide, along with our fave feline friends Mániklo and Sóleyra. As a reminder - Jötnar will not attack the Village in this Mode - instead, you head out into the world to fight them (and the Saga Bosses) on your own terms!
Some of its new features include:
No more Giant or Helthing attacks: While Jötnar and Helthings will no longer march towards your Village, they’ll be found throughout Midgard (along with Saga Bosses) and can be defeated for rewards.
No central Village: Free from the constant threat of incoming Jötnar attacks, Einherjar can write legendary Viking tales of their own, building their perfect Viking homes with a variety of new Constructions and Decorations.
Crafting 2.0: Without a Village or Vendors, Einherjar in Survival 2.0 need to be self-sufficient to craft items. Utilize the magical Dwarven invention of the Allforge, accessible from the Build menu and free to place anywhere, no materials required. While the Allforge is valuable for repairing Equipment, its true purpose is to instantly build Crafting Stations, which allow you to craft and forge a variety of items depending on the Station type.
Choose your own destiny: You’ll be able to fully customize your play style with a brand new Blessing Tree layout, containing close to 100 Blessings otherwise contained to a specific Class. The Level cap will be increased from 10 to 50.
Much more we’ll get into very soon. 🙂
During this simpler time, new advancements in crafting require a new way to fight and gather materials. The addition of Spears will be a great asset to those starting out their journeys in Midgard.
Fishing Rods will also be incredibly helpful in finding out what type of fish are living in the ~Mysterious Ripples~ popping up in Rivers and Oceans. Both will be valuable tools as you survive AND thrive (surthive, as we say) in Midgard!
Of course, we’ll continue to be posting more peeks here and there, and updates with more information on what to expect in Season 3 before it releases on August 16! We’re so looking forward to welcoming new Vikings to our ever-growing family. 💙
Questions? We'll be hanging out in the comments and on our social media, so don’t hesitate to let us know. Psst. We almost forgot. Here’s a first look at what you can expect…

Tribes of Midgard: Monthly Recap, The Allforge, and more - Dev Blog #2
Welcome Vikings, to Dev Blog #2!
April has been an exciting month for us, and there’s even more to come in May. Season 3’s development is in full swing, and we’re glad to share that we've just reached an important milestone in wrapping up our Survival Mode Alpha phase! Survival Mode’s development is coming along well, and we have more to share below.
We also want to take this time to share news about the Private Beta, some patch notes, what we’re currently working on, and what else awaits for May. I’m too used to saying “let’s dive into it”... so uhh... in the spirit of this “hot” upcoming Season, “let’s get cooking”? 🔥
PRIVATE BETA (PC)
With our new development phase starting, we’re excited for the opportunity to get our very first feedback on the revamped Survival Mode, as this will evolve with your help and input.
Our next Private Beta (on PC) will be held in mid-May, for all current and new Midguardians members. If you’re interested in giving feedback, please don’t hesitate to join the Midguardians program. To learn more, visit https://www.tribesofmidgard.com/midguardians/!
PATCH NOTES
Yesterday, we deployed a minor patch including Doubling XP in both Saga and Survival Mode as well as increasing boat health - be sure to restart your game to see the changes on all platforms. You can catch up on the full notes here!
SURVIVAL MODE INTRODUCTIONS
Next, we want to (re)introduce some characters that will make an even stronger appearance in Midgard in Season 3’s revamped Survival Mode - it’s about time they say Hiló!
Eira Foot-Crushed ⚔️
For years now, there has been a red-haired Einherjar featured on the Tribes of Midgard key art. She’s a powerful Viking warrior, named Eira Foot-Crushed (there’s a reason for that name… and we’ll get to that a bit later on).
She’s been a constant figure since the start of Tribes of Midgard’s development, and has two armors created after her - both the Eira and Midsummer Eira cosmetics.
Not only that, but she has lent her voice to narrate several of our trailers, and the Giant Showcase series. Did you know she even voices the introduction of the game, spoken in High Midgardian? She’s voiced by the talented Camilla Arfwedson, and we were fortunate enough to be in that recording session (very fun!!) to hear how it all came to life.
With all that said, it’s clear to us that it’s time for Eira to take on a greater role in our revamped Survival Mode - you’ll finally get to meet her in game for the first time! She’s currently creating some… special Runes for you, so expect to hear a proper introduction from her soon.
Mániklo and Sóleyra 🐱
Besides Eira, you may also recognize our curious and fantastical Norse cats from the tutorial (or maybe they’re your favourite pet in game) - Mániklo’ (meaning “Moon Claw”) and Sóleyra (meaning “Sun Ear”). Mániklo is, well, a stubborn little deity, while Sóleyra’s quirkiness tends to surface with her perpetual sense of adventure.
Since the Survival mode revamp will introduce many new changes and more to learn, the tutorial will be receiving various improvements, including a more consistent interaction with our two cats. Mániklo’s wise words, along with Sóleyra’s effervescence, will be there to guide you along your first steps in Season 3, so you don’t have to worry about learning the ropes alone.
But until they can do so, we’ll give it a start!
THE ALLFORGE
We want to introduce you to an important element of the upcoming Survival Mode: The Allforge. This is a wondrous little Dwarven invention that can instantly craft Stations (you can see some examples of crafting stations here). You’ll need the Allforge in order to create Tools, Weapons, Armor, and maybe even a heavily fortified village.
It can be deployed wherever you’d like (fun fact: it can even repair your equipment). Think of it as the origin of all Stations!
FISHING
This has been lurking on the Road Map for some time, and with the new Survival Mode, some brand new resources have appeared just under the water’s surface!
Craft one of many fishing rods, and find the perfect spot to fill your pantry.
NORSFELL HAS A NEW HOME
Okay, besides the in-game news, we have some IRL news! Some of our team have started working at our brand new studio (still under construction - we need some plants) after 2 years of working from home. Though we remain a totally flexible, hybrid-working studio, we’re glad to see each other’s faces.
You can bet we’ll share a studio tour once the setup is done!
You’re allll caught up now. We can't wait to start this month of May with you, whether it's with our new PlayStation Plus tribe, our Midguardians, or all the players with whom we'll be sharing even more of our journey to come.
Questions? Comments? We'll be hanging out in the comments!
We hope you’re doing well! We're currently hard at work on the revamped Survival Mode and all that's to come for Season 3, and will have more news to share about that very soon. :)
Today, we’ve deployed a minor patch that does not require any downtime. Just be sure to restart your game to see the changes!
Here are the notes:
Double Season XP! ✨
Effective as of this release, we are doubling the amount of Season XP earned in both Saga and Survival Modes.
Norsfell note: Over the course of the Wolf and Serpent Sagas, we’ve been tracking Season XP progression very carefully and have come to the conclusion that in its current state, it is slower paced than we anticipated. We want players to be able to level up their account progress while having fun in Tribes of Midgard, whatever form that takes, and without having to worry about optimizing their Season XP gain efficiency in order to chase those unlocks. We’ll continue to monitor over the coming months but feel this is a worthwhile first step towards making progression feel quicker and (literally) more rewarding.
Stronger Boats, Boats, Boats! ⛵️
All Boat types have had their HP boosted by 100% and the maximum collision damage that can be received has been cut in half.
Norsfell note: We noticed that Boat durability was a little more flimsy than we expected, making it very easy to find yourself shipwrecked. We greatly boosted the HP values of all Boats to give them some much needed survivability so it’ll take more than a bump or two to end your Viking journey.
Shop Rotation Speeding Up 👕
To account for the increasing amount of content and offerings we plan to add, we’ll be speeding up the Featured Shop rotation to every 3 days, from every 7.
Quick Reminders
Be sure to join our Discord if you’re looking to find a tribe, or if you have any questions at all! It's our main community hub, and they will be glad to welcome you in!
As always, if you're experiencing any issues, please don't hesitate to let us know on Discord or through our official Support site - we'll be happy to help.
