Trophy Trout

Game Patch

Hello all!

Dev here.

There was an issue with using the controller and landing fish. It is fixed now - X and Y are used to reel fish in too. Sorry for the controller going sideways for a bit there as I was trying improve keyboard functions via a request from the community.

This journey of making Fishing on the Fly has been a crazy one. As a solo dev before Marketplaces came to Unity and Unreal, making this game was insane. All programming, art, animations, everything was done by me. I didn't realize how short a game engine life span was back when I started, potentially making a game look dated, etc.

I spent many years making this game. I have yet to make back a fraction of my costs. I have delivered on my promises to include a trophy room and incorporated a lot of feedback. There comes a point though where it is much easier for me to deliver and incorporate new ideas in a new engine.

I will continue to address issues with this game if any come up beyond this point. However, from this point forward, I will be using a new engine for development purposes.

Please leave a comment or concern still!

Thanks,

Mac

Trophy Room now live!

You can now go into the Record Book and select your trophy to display in your Trophy Room! You are able to unlock six trophy fish to display, coming as you unlock levels. You have until the next level is unlocked before the choice for the that level is locked in. The room also allows you to travel to the rivers, etc as you unlock them.

The download for the update is 500 mb.

I also have to admit that last weeks release was flawed and broke the game. No more game freeze on the 6th level. Thank you for those that pointed this out. Good news is, I fixed it! The game now works in story mode like it should again.

Thank you for your patience as this game moves through early access.

I also included stability improvements to this release.

Plus I brought back in the A and space for reeling in fish for those that were used to it.

Also both <- and -> as we all as A and D keys work to select flies in the UI screen. You can always us your mouse wheel to scroll through flies too without going to the UI.

BTW - you don't have to set the hook until like chapter 20. I worked on removing the message until then, but I only got it to work for the first fish you catch so far.

I'm looking at adding splashes for the fish when they jump and refining end game art for the next release.

I could really use some feedback!

Tight lines,

mc

Game update 6/3/2019

The game was updated last night. The changes to the game are huge. I have tried super hard to incorporate feedback.

*Movement Keys "AWSD" and mouse buttons now are used to fight, move, etc. You no longer have to change hand positions.

*Entire fight system was overhauled. Every fish now has its own difficulty and you must now reel by default. The fighting system also now will getting harder to reel in as you level up. Don't expect to land monster fish without a fight. Wouldn't hurt to have a nice rod for that monster too.

*Game is progressively harder as you increase levels. Harder to hook fish, harder to land them, harder to find out fish are eating. Equipment in the game will offset some of the difficulty.

*Each Equipment (Rod, Reel, Vest, Boots, Waders) piece has its own skill on top of increasing your chances. Example - One of them will lower your chances of losing a fly when a fish gets away. Equipment stats stack (i.e. owning four rods stacks that stat). Equipment stats are better for the top tier items versus lower tier.

*French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, German have been added to the language section in settings. Now the game's audio/text for chapters can be changed. Please provide feedback.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks,

Mac

Note from dev

Hey all,

I know it has been awhile since I posted or released an update for the game.

I just want you to know that I am still working on it. Creating this game took almost a decade to make. It was an act of love. I love fly fishing and I love gaming. This game will always be a part of me. Unlike other studio games, as long as I am alive this game with remain alive. As long as there is feedback, I will work towards making this game even better.

I appreciate the support of those that bought the game and played it. I meant the game as way to teach fly fishing while having fun. Thank you for taking the time to read this and your support.

Tight lines,

Coming Soon!

Fishing on the Fly continues to improve based on your feedback. So please shout out things you'd like to see!

French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese audio and subtitles are done and slated for release. When I release out of early access, I will shoot for a translated interface too. I'm going to harden the DRM a little before my next release and this next release will be awhile out still.

I may have these things too in that release. If not they are the top things I am bringing to the game next.

1. Mouse based fighting system and interface.
2. Trophy Room.

I am working on a couple other surprises as well soon. I'm looking to add some new core stuff to the game, but not take anyway anything that is there.

Tight Lines,

Mac

Major update released including the Record Book

Last night we put out another release and this one is the biggest and baddest yet. Welcome to the Record Book, a feature that keeps track of all the unique fish in the game. You probably forgot about that gigantic brown trout over ten pounds you caught, but the Record Book didn’t. No two fish in the game are the same with every fish being a different weight and length. Make sure you save the game and you always be able to look back.

We also slowed down the drag system for levels 85-100, encouraging you to reach the final level and unlock the game’s secrets.

Expect more updates like this that will continue to add value to your experience. Soon I hope to break the game into “learn to fly fish” that exists now and a “trophy hunter” story that features advanced fighting mechanisms. In the vein the Record Book will soon allow you to select the fish you display in your Trophy Room. Stay tuned and remember I value your feedback, so don’t be afraid to holler at me.

Fish on!

Free Demo is now live!

Try the game out today and judge for yourself if you like it for FREE!

There is link from the main store page for you to download and try the game. The demo will give you a quick tour of the game showing off four levels and what you can expect from the game as you progress.

The demo is good indication if the game will run smoothly on your system or not. I would always suggest the demo first before you make the choice to buy as the files downloaded are mostly converted to the live game, making for an easy transition.

I've also posted guides under that section for how to play and use the controls of the game.

I did have some problems with the demo overwriting the main game files when I was working on configuring Steam. If some of you experienced some issues with the game - this was the most likely cause.

There is a game update coming soon the includes the record book where you can look up your biggest fish you have caught while playing.

Latest patch notes

There now two hands on the rod for fighting fish when reeling in. I also added four new animations for the rod for up, down, left and right. I wanted to match these to the arrow functions for realism in fighting head shakes and turning fish. It didn’t quite work out yet but expect more refinement and iteration here in the future.

The demo has been a fiasco. There is currently a button to download it but it is broken on the store page. Instead the demo took over the main game files last night between 2 and 4 am until I could unwind the xml config system. Luckily I know how to program computers and Steam’s setup is very logical. I hope nobody was affected by the demo over riding the game files.

I’ve added a bug and suggestion discussion thread. Feel free to suggest improvements! I’m very focused on making improvements to the game that you want and feel need to be there for an entertaining fly fishing experience. Refinement, polishing, improvements to the load system and trophy room are all on the horizon.

Fish On!

Added new achievement.

Like a boss!

Boss and trophy fish now require you to fight them with limited time and you can find these fish on all levels. When you land your first one of these - you will earn the “Like a Boss” achievement. This is a sweet spot for people wanting to catch fish casually and those that want more hardcore fighting action right away. Seek these fish out (hint they are bigger) and give it a shot. Boss fish will each have their own unique reaction time.

I also took a hard look at the save/load function. The points weren’t saving correctly from when I added fish sizes and I addressed this. I verified the save game files weren’t being overwritten via updates and made sure everything else was working. I’ll be adding some messaging to let you know the save game has worked.

Fish On!

Thank you and Demo update

The game is now in about twenty different countries. I just wanted to give shout outs for everyone that has been supportive of the game and the launch so far this week. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it!

DEMO UPDATE

I did upload a demo today, but like everything else it is under review before Steam will allow it to become available. I took the basic game and linked the Chapters for four of the maps changing when you catch a single fish, so it will give you quite the tour. Also as per request, I jacked up the fighting system so you can see how it really works in the game as a whole. Starting with the second fish you catch in the demo, the line tension kicks in. The third fish is somewhat easy, but I guarantee you will not catch the fourth fish on the first try. You have one tenth of a second before the fish makes a change to the line tension meter. This should give you a much clearer idea of what progression in the game looks like. You will not earn achievements, points, equipment or need to change flies in the demo.

BUG REPORT

There have been only a few problems so far but please let me know if you encounter one. If your computer goes over 60 frames per second - the UI might act up. Holler as I have a fix for that with Bizkit's help. Also I'm going to force restarts for when you make changes to the video settings for certain things. The HUD (when changing screen resolution or video settings) might look like the score and points are getting cropped or something. If the HUD looks weird, just restart the game. The game will launch with the correct settings you chose and should run correctly restarted.

CHANGES COMING

I have been working on the two-handed model for reeling in the fish and made good progress there. I think you can expect that in game soon. I also have the new fighting system for expert setup so as you progress (or other factors) you will have less time between to choose between reel and brake. I think you will find the fighting system will definitely leave you with the feeling what it is like fighting fish irl - those moments of shear panic if they stay on the line or not.

Again thanks for all the support!

- Mac
