Community Update - March 9

What’s good Wastelanders?!

Inching Closer

With a little under five weeks left until our launch date, we’re definitely in the final stages of production with a basically finished game with a few pesky bugs remaining to find and fix.

We’ve shown you a lot of what Turbo Kid has to offer already and we want to avoid spoilers from now on so you can discover all the wonders of the Wasteland on your own.

The Future of the Past is Now

So, instead of looking to the future, let us gaze into the past. We’ve dug up a bunch of relics from the early production days when we were all oh so young!

Brainstorms, sketches, concept art, mood boards, references, and research, are what make a game like Turbo Kid such a well-thought-out project.

So, here’s some of our early stuff for your viewing pleasure.

The World of Turbo Kid

Here are some early sketches and ideas of what would become the different zones you’ll find in Turbo Kid. If you’ve played the demo, you’ll notice the names of these zones in the game. If you speak a little French, you might recognize some foreign words in there too (yes, we’re French, but the Canadian kind, or as we like to call it, the good kind).

A Lavish Church Sits Atop this Desolate Land

The Preacher’s lair, The Church holds many secrets. You’ll uncover mysterious areas, experiment labs, and horrifying sights as you make your way to your final challenge.

Here are some early research and sketches that we used as inspiration to create this privileged domain within an otherwise barren environment, a staple of post-apocalyptic cinema from which this game borrows heavily.

A Boss Looking for a Style

Becca is the ruler of the skatepark, which she controls by remaining the sole supplier of a mysterious designer drug called GG, hence her nickname “the GG Queen”. While coming up with her look, we explored multiple styles for her clothes, hair, weapons, etc. until we found the right balance.

These early-stage visuals give you a glimpse into our process when creating this boss.

And this is our final iteration.

Keep it Up, You’ll Stay Like This Forever

And Finally, a glimpse at some more of that good debugging phase hilarity.
What am I looking at?

Seems like the Kid is becoming some sort of criminal, but not a rough one...

We wish you a great week until our next update! Don’t forget to stay connected by following us on our SOCIALS!

Big Demo Update!

Development Update February 9

What’s good wastelanders?!

This week, we take a quick look at the in-game Turbo Kid comic book by Jeik Dion and we give a shout-out to our marketing partners at 1minus1.

A Comic Book to Complete the Story

While scavenging the Wasteland, you will gather scraps, weapons, and power-ups, but if you keep your eyes peeled, you’ll also find pieces of memorabilia that will enrich the lore of Turbo Kid. One such keepsake is the infamous Turbo Kid comic book, written and illustrated by Quebec cartoonist, author, designer, colorist, screenwriter, and our friend, Jeik Dion.

Over 20 pages have been scattered throughout the vast wasteland! Here’s one of them, picturing Jeik himself as part of the adventure. Find them all to complete the story

Self-Publishing = New Friends!

As many of you know, we are self-publishing Turbo Kid. As daunting as it may seem, it also means that we have more control over how we market the game. That being said, as we got closer and closer to the release of the game, we started needing help with our marketing efforts. Thankfully, the awesome people at 1minus1 swooped in and made a real difference in our marketing and promotion efforts to ensure Turbo Kid is a success!

Once again, be sure to follow us on socials to get the latest Turbo Kid news! See you soon!

Development Update January 26

This week, we'll take a look back at the film that sparked the whole thing and see how it influenced the production of the game.

Nine Years Ago...

On January 26th 2015, nine years ago to the day, the public feasted their eyes on Turbo Kid for the first time as the film premiered at the Sundance film festival in Park City, Utah.

The film went on to win multiple awards at the Saturn Awards, SXSW Film Festival, Sitges, Fantasia and FANCINE to name a few.

Reviewers were impressed, calling the film:

“A pitch-perfect pastiche that never mocks its inspirations, the picture is silly fun to warm the hearts of aging fanboys and delight hipsters who weren’t yet born the first time Mel Gibson donned Max’s leathers.”
- John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter

“Perhaps the most colorful film ever made with a postapocalyptic setting, Turbo Kid is a loud, energetic homage to Eighties kitsch.”
- Laura Kern Film Comment Magazine

“A ferociously fun throwback to a time when B-movies went way over-the-top without a single care.”
- JimmyO, JoBlo's Movie Network

For fans of the film, this is the essence we’re aiming to keep in the game. We’ve been working with the team behind the film to make sure that their vision of the lore, tone, and humor are respected.

Calling Back to the Film

Adding to your immersion, iconic scenes from the film will be revisited in dreamy in-game flashbacks, giving more context to the characters' emotions and motivations.

What's the comic book the Kid's talking about? Find out in two weeks when we dive into the world of in-game collectibles.

Development Update - January 12 2024

Happy 2024!

Hello wastelanders!

We hope you had a merry happy solstice time. The Outerminds team took a short break, but we are now back to work on Turbo Kid.

This Is Fine

This is it, the last stretch before launch! We should have content freeze in a few weeks, at which point we’ll finish up stabilization, optimization, balancing, and debugging.

Many devs who are in that situation will tell you they have everything under control and aren’t facing any severe problems with their game. But they’re all lying, they’re freaking out! They’re trying to reassure themselves, and you, but deep down they know that the whole thing could blow up in their faces at any moment.

But we’re different. We are 100% NOT LYING when we say that we have everything under control and we aren’t facing any severe problems with Turbo Kid. No one here is freaking out, OK?! This of course explains why we have so little news for you this week.

And, That's It

Told you it was a quick one.

We leave you with this image which actually sums up what we think 2024 will be like: bright, beautiful, and turbo!

We'll be right here in two weeks with more stuff. In the meantime, stay updated on our socials.

Gear up for a Turbo-charged 2024!
