Dev Diary #16: Exploration System Update

Greetings, Principals!

It’s been quite a while, isn’t it? To tell you the truth, we’ve been hard at work improving all aspects of the game, one of them being the major change to our exploration system. We moved away from automatic exploration in our previous build to a more open one where you can freely explore the different areas in the game!

At present, there are 3 different areas in the world that you can explore in the early access with 3 more coming along the way . These areas can be accessed through the world map, representing the varying biomes in the realm of Valthiria itself. Separated based on the combat difficulty, the explorable areas are:

1. Plains – Difficulty: Easy
2. Forest – Difficulty: Medium
3. Mountain – Difficulty: Medium
4. Desert – Difficulty: Hard (1st update)
5. Tundra – Difficulty: Hard (2nd update)
6. Secret Area (3rd and final update)

Aside from giving players a more pronounced sense of agency, the change also brings about a slew of new features to improve the sense of progression in the exploration itself.

The first is the introduction of the Teleport Gate. In order to start exploring an area, you have to activate a dormant gate. After you activate it, you can fast travel directly to any gate you have activated . Here’s a neat feature: If you (or your students) are itching to go home, you can directly teleport to the gate located in the academy as well!

Don’t rely on the Teleport Gate to take you away every time you’re in a bind though. There will be certain times when the gate won’t be active, such as when you’re being overrun by a gauntlet of monsters during a quest, or when you need to find an item in an area before you can proceed to the next one.

It’s not going to be very fun exploring large areas without a place to fall back to and rest, right? We’ve also added the campsite feature in our current build, where your students can lay down, relax, and enjoy the night sky from the comfort of their camp.

Your students may also choose to fully restore their HP at the camp, but there’s a caveat: the monsters they’ve defeated will respawn as well, so choose wisely when to rest and when to keep on adventuring!

We also know that you might have a little too much fun exploring to only stumble on areas where your students are underleveled. You don’t want to lose your dear students in an “accident,” wouldn’t you? That is why we also put blockades towards certain areas of the game.

The blockade exists for a variety of reasons, but we ultimately put it so that you will have a far more focused experience while playing the game. This is how the blockade looks like in our current build, but we are working to make it blend more seamlessly to the areas that you are currently exploring:

Well, that’s it for the update on the exploration mode! We’re looking forward to seeing you explore the different biomes that are populated with dangerous (and sometimes cute) monsters that we have lovingly crafted. Stay tuned for more information, we’ll see you on the next Dev Diary!

Dev Diary #15: Dungeons Galore!

Greetings, Principals!

Adventure awaits you in Valthiria, mostly in the deep dungeons scattered around the nation. Today we’ll be taking a deeper look into the dungeons and what secret lie within them. Each dungeon is segmented into regions and have their own distinct environment, monsters, rewards and quests. Currently there are the following 7 dungeon regions in-game:

1. Plains
2. Desert
3. Forest
4. Mountains
5. Tundra
6. Swamp
7. Cave

Your students will start off only having access to the plain areas first, but as the story and your academy progress new dungeons will be available for you to explore. Locked dungeons won’t be revealed until you have fulfilled the necessary conditions tied to the event system and exploration mechanic. Selecting a dungeon will reveal its name and lore along with related quest and tasks available. The dungeon map itself will be revealed as you explore the place overtime.

After selecting a dungeon, you need to choose your exploration party. An exploration party needs to consist of 4 students, no more, no less. Principals can assign which active skill to bring for each student with a maximum of 3 skills each. Choose wisely depending on the monster’s proficiency! You can see the monster proficiency list when selecting your dungeon. Some dungeons have monsters with every kind of proficiency, but some have no physical or have difficult combinations of particular proficiencies.

Each dungeon terrain is unique, which you can probably imagine how the landscapes will be from each area’s name. A nice change of surroundings and potential terrain challenges for you to discover, best be prepared!

Well, that’s all about dungeons for now. Thanks for reading and we’ll see you in the next one, Principals!

Dev Diary #14: All About Monsters!

Greetings, Principals!

With Halloween right around the corner, it’s only fitting that we let our monsters shine for the festivities. Here’s a closer look at the monsters you’ll encounter while exploring the dungeons of Valthiria.

We already mentioned before that monsters in Valthiria have evolved into having their own proficiencies, but did you know they also have their own archetypes? Currently we categorized monsters into 3 types based on their difficulty with 6 archetypes based on their attacks. This of course can change in the future as we further develop the game. For the monster types themselves, there’s fodder, specialist and bosses. Fodder is the normal enemies you’ll encounter to gain experience. Specialists have a specific way to be defeated, but you can still try and brute force them down if you like. Bosses on the other hand are designed for you to get creative and strike them down, they will require a bit of pattern studying to defeat though. Now onto the archetypes!

• Normal
First off there’s your average joe monsters. You’ll probably be beating up these guys a lot. They have no specialties and are quite easy to kill. Slimes, balloons, you’ll probably encounter a lot of those during your early quests.

• Rusher
Rushers are the easier types of specialist you’ll encounter. They may be fast, but their attacks are relatively weak and only targets a single character. They do however have moderate HP and defense, so shield-breaking is key to winning this battle quickly.

• Brute
Brute enemies may be slow but they hit hard, coupled with tremendous HP and defense. You will need to shield-break them and be wary of your hp when facing these enemies in your quests.

• Horde
As you can probably guess by the name, hordes come in groups. Alone they’re pretty weak, but together they can be overwhelming. Hordes will always consist of low-level fodder type monsters, so they should be easy to handle if you can get the hang of weeding them out that is.

• Bomber
Bombers are mid-range enemies that can self-destruct, damaging your students in the process. Run or kill them ASAP because they will hurt if you don’t give it your all. You can tell a bomber is about to go off by their change in color.

• Healer
Again, a very on the nose name, these mid-range enemies have the ability to heal their friends. They do not possess any combat abilities, but they may increase difficulty in certain fights.

Those are the monster types of Valthiria, careful not to bump into them on the streets this Halloween. Hope you all have a fun holiday and we’ll see you in the next one Principals!

Dev Diary #13: The Champions of Valthiria

Greetings, Principal!

As principal, there are many students that will be under your wing, but some stand out more than others. Today we’ll be giving you a sneak peek of our students in the Academy, each of them hoping to be champions of their regions. Do note though that the characters listed here might change overtime as the game is still in development. With that in mind, let’s get to know these students a little closer, shall we?

Ziva Mukhina

After monsters attacked her Novoresk hometown and permanently scarred her face, Ziva vows to avenge her villagers and enrolled into your academy. Driven and sincere, Ziva is definitely one of the more motivated students in your academy. However, Principals should keep an eye on her, as motivation for revenge can be a double-edge sword in her journey as a hero.

Vilko Baskin

Somewhat the black sheep of the family, Vilko decided to branch out from his Chernov family of Knights and become a mage. Coming from a family of heroes, Vilko can be a bit spoiled and think he’s destined for greatness. As you get to know him however, you’ll notice that he’s a diligent man with noble intentions. A diamond in the rough, will he succeed in becoming a mage or return to his family tradition and become a knight?

Esra Alexei

A prodigy in Arcworks, Esra yearns to seek out things she missed out on while being smothered by her family. Away from her parents and Perkuna, Esra hopes to experience things as a ‘normal’ girl instead of her life as nobility. Powerful, courteous and ladylike, Esra has the makings of becoming a well-renowned hero. Just make sure her insecurities don’t get the best of her.

Leonid Marlen

Coming from the reclusive Mokosil tribe, Leonid defies all stereotypes and decides to study Archemy. Full of knowledge unknown to most, there’s always something to learn from this young student. Progressive than most of his kindred, there is a clash between his tribe’s tradition and the technology he wishes to pursue. As principal you can encourage his studies further, while also discovering something new yourself.

Many more students await you in the academy, each with their own personalities and backstories for you to discover. Making sure the students stay alive in their quests is necessary but socializing with them is also part of the fun in being principal! That’s all for today’s dev diary, thanks for sticking around and see you in the next one, Principals!
