July Update: Biriyani Level
Hi all!
We’re back with another development update. This time, we’ve wrapped up a chapter of the story featuring one of the most popular Indian dishes of all time: Biriyani!
Biriyani is a dish that’s found throughout India and there are a variety of ways to prepare it. For this level, we’ve tried a homestyle approach to the legendary layered Hyderabadi Dum Biriyani.
We are also introducing the Memory Mechanic in this level! Unlike previous levels, the recipe is not partially ruined - it’s completely unreadable. Instead, Venba has to recall the memory of making biriyani with her mother to finish this important dish before her son leaves for university.
It’s an important moment in the family’s life. The child they stayed in Canada to raise has grown up and is leaving the nest, and it’s hard on Venba and Paavalan to see him go.
May Update: Park Level
Hello! Long time no see, everyone. We’ve been hard at work for the past few months, heads down trying to get the game feature complete. 3 new levels have been developed, and today we’re going to talk about one of the most unique levels in the game.
This level is the only one in the game with no cooking component to the gameplay. Paavalan doesn’t come home on time one day, and you get to see Venba and Kavin problem solving to try and figure out where he is.
It’s also a level that has some darker aspects to the story. We put a spotlight on Venba’s husband, Paavalan, and to learn more about his day to day life and challenges.
Venba is heavily inspired by Tamil movies. For this level in particular, we tried to direct the cinematics in a way such that it will be reminiscent of the movies it draws inspiration from. To achieve this, the music was integral. Alpha Something, the music director, created a special song for this level that was recorded in a live studio with a local band and a lot of effort went into syncing up the visuals to the music. We’re really happy with how this level turned out and we can’t wait for you all to play it!
October Update: Idlis
Hello!! We're back with an update for October. We have wrapped yet another level, and this time it's the first level players will be playing, and it features Idlis!
Idlis are made from steaming idli batter (made from rice and urad dal) and are a prevalent breakfast staple in South India. It's so popular that we almost wanted to avoid showcasing something so typical, but in the end, it didn't feel right to make a game about Tamil cuisine without idlis in them.
I've grown quite fond of this level because the puzzle design draws almost entirely from the utensils and equipment used to make idlis. It's almost as if there was already a puzzle in the process of making idlis, and we had to obfuscate the correct information.
Since it's the first level, players will meet Venba and Paavalan for the first time. At this point in their lives, they're questioning their lives in Canada and are anxious about their future when they receive some surprising news. The narrative and the cooking tie together here really well, and we're excited for when you'll eventually play it!
With the idli level behind us, we're moving forward with the next level, which will play quite differently from the rest of the game. More on that on the next update!
