Versus World

Lobby issue is now resolved!

You should now be able to create lobbies without getting that pesky access denied error. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Working on fix for creating lobbies

Hello all, it seems as a result of becoming Free to Play, players are unable to create lobbies now. I am currently working on a fix for this that will be out shortly. Thank you to everyone who reported the issue, and sorry for the inconvenience!

Versus World is becoming Free to Play!

The time has come! Starting August 24th, Versus World will be free to play! This will hopefully attract many new players, and will be better for everyone!

For those who have already bought Versus World, I intend to give you exclusive customization rewards once I add unlockable cosmetics. This is fairly far in the roadmap, but it will come. Thank you for your patience, and thank you for playing!

Also, I realize it has been awhile since a game update, but that will change soon. My priorities are the same, with user-generated content being my focus, but there will be smaller updates in the meantime.

Anyways, I look forward to playing with all of you! See ya on the 24th!

Casual Mention #2

First off, happy opening day! Go Twins!

Sadly, I'm not here to announce a partnership with MLB, but I am here to talk about Versus World! I first want to thank all the streamers/YouTubers who have been playing Versus World. It's a lot of fun to watch you play it, and it helps me learn how new players interact with the game, so thank you!

Now, let's talk about that player count...
I have decided to constantly run giveaways on steamgifts.com and twitter until there is a minimum average of 50 players per day. It might be a slow process, but I'm dedicated to getting it there. There are unique challenges that occur when you mix indie with multiplayer, but I'm not finished until the world knows Versus World. To address the requests of making it free-to-play, I want to say that I honestly with I could. It's a balancing act between wanting what's best for the game, and the strangling necessity of money. Unfortunately, I can't afford the free-to-play model, as it would require hiring artists. The giveaways are a way of throttling the free price tag, and will hopefully be a good middle ground. We shall see!

Good things on the horizon...
As casually mentioned in the previous Casual Mention, I will still be working on optimization and mod support. I'm currently doing a massive overhaul of all the menus to get them ready for mods, and also, let's be honest, they're a little clunky right now. There are so many cool map and game mode ideas that I want to try, and I will start pumping those out like crazy as soon as this mod infrastructure is in place.

Now, let's talk about that ping...
I want to let you guys know that dedicated servers are something I want to add eventually, most likely before the official release. I will talk about this more in the future, but I thought it'd be worth mentioning real quick.

I want to be as transparent as possible, so please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the development of Versus World. It's certainly not a bother. In fact, I enjoy discussing my game. Anyways, thank you to all of the Versus World players, and have a great day!

Casual Mention #1

Hello, everyone! I just got back from a much needed week off after 18 months of dev time, and now I'm once again ready to kick it into high gear!

I will be using "Casual Mention" announcements to talk about things that aren't directly related to a specific game update. They will include news, plans for the future, and anything else related to Versus World. So, that being said...

...Here's some plans for the future! There are two main things that I'm really excited about getting to work on: optimization and user-generated content

Optimization
While this may be less exciting to some, it is very important. Frame rate is very important to me, and I'm sure I'm not alone on that. Some players (regardless of machine specs) have more issues than others, seemingly random (of course it's not random, though). I can see this first hand, as my old, crappy laptop often runs the game better than my high-end desktop. It makes no sense, but I am highly motivated to figure it out and fix it.

Mods / User-Generated Content
This was something I always planned on adding, but after a week-long soul-searching session, I realized how important it was to add right away. The plan is to set it up so anyone can download the free Unity editor, import the mod tools, and easily create tons of different mods. Using a combination of the Unity scene editor, the Versus World scripting API, and pretty much anything the Unity engine has to offer, it will be very easy to create maps, game types, weapons, grenades, power-ups, and any other dynamic game objects. For example, you could create a post-apocalyptic zombie co-op survival mode, with procedural-generated weapon drops (something I will probably make as an example mod for teaching purposes). These will be rolled out in increments, starting with the ability to make maps and scriptable map objects. When finished, I will also be using these tools to create new features, so anything I need for feature development, you will also have access to. And, of course, all of these mods can be shared using Steam Workshop.

I will still be fixing bugs and adding smaller features in the meantime, but these will be my primary focus.

P.S. Yes, I know I need to update the whiteboard in Meta World. ːsteamhappyː

Update 1.2.0 - Custom Game Modes

Custom game modes now available!
When hosting a lobby, click the game mode button to open the menu. Choose a built-in game mode as a starting point and click "Save as new". You can now edit all sorts of settings related to scoring, weapons, grenades, power-ups, movement, and more.

Additions

  • Added custom game modes
  • Added some new shirts, pants, and shoes customization options
  • Added "Mini Siege" game mode (Siege that's better for small maps)
  • Added Erdentempel map prototype. This is a prototype with incomplete visuals and gameplay. I want to see how it plays, and how to make it better before making it look pretty.

Changes

  • Removed IP address from lobby
  • Bots are worse at knifing (now based on difficulty)
  • Reduced game over screen duration
  • Made "Siege - Captures Only" the standard version of Siege, and renamed the old one "Classic Siege"

Fixes

  • Fixed initial spawn points in Meta World
  • Fixed knifing while respawning EDIT: It's only fixed on host...
  • Fixed tesla grenade shock effect randomly shocking nothing
  • Fixed tesla grenade shock effect drawing only straight lines
  • Fixed collision box on shotgun drop

-Minor optimizations. Very minor, but not the end of the optimizations. I'm aware some players are having frame rate issues. I will always be looking for ways to make it run smoother. I am a firm believer that no one should have to play with less than 60 fps.

Getting More Players

Hello everyone! Just wanted to give you an update: Over the next few weeks I will be split testing ads on Facebook. I will then use every dollar I received from you awesome people who bought the game to use on ads, so we can have more players online. I realize that the number of concurrent players is directly related to game quality, and that is my priority right now. Thank you for your patience!

Update 1.1.0 - A City By Citizens

New game mode: Heatmatch
Get kills, earn medals, and deal damage quickly to increase your heat index. Earn points per second equal to your heat index. Reach high levels of heat to deal explosive damage to nearby players.
Check it out: HERE (YouTube)

Scoring update for Moon Base

  • 1 point: standard kills
  • 2 points: direct rocket hits
  • 3 points: sticky grenade kill (must stick player)

Changes

  • Siege - Captures Only: Changed score to win to 3
  • Moon Base: Changed sticky grenade spawn amount to 1
  • Added "Stuck" medal
  • Added "Not In Minnesota" medal (only in Heatmatch)

Fixes

  • "Direct Hit" medal now shows on kill feed
  • Disconnected players on scoreboard have grey text

NOTE: The next thing I'm going to be working on is expanding the game's online presence with social media, streamers, etc. with hopes to get more players online so it's easier to find matches. Therefore, it may be a few weeks before another game update, unless there are serious bugs. Thank you very much to everyone who has played Versus World so far, and I promise to make increasing concurrent players a top priority!
-Justin
