Beside many improvements regarding gameplay and performance optimization, we offer with this update a special Christmas gift - the new Alchemy Laboratory. (beta Status)
The story behind: Ranulf, the shaman is well experienced in making potions by utensils which he brought from his travels to asia. In his magical Alchemy laboratory he collected many useful things, i.e. ingrediences to make potions, or ready to use potions or charms to apparate away from Skullwald to far away regions within seconds. Things which could be very helpful for you to win this game.
But the usage of these things is quite complicated and a secret. It's on you to find out how to combine the right utensils in the right way. Doing it wrong could be extremly dangerous for you by the way and not all ingredience are harmless.
The Treasure Box At Level 3 you may find a very interesting table in Ranulfs hut. On the table are many helpful things, but the best thing is within the sealed treasure box. Opening it with the right key will present a phantastic content. But, what's the hack .... where to find that key ?!
The potion regal At Level 4 you will recognice an additional furniture with many potions, which you can use. But be careful not all of them are helpful.
The Philosopher Stone - and now it's your turn ! Ranulf made a lot of experiences, but at the end he ensembled his first recipe - the Philosopher Stone. A recipe to transform certain ingredience into pure gold. Since gold is very rare on your island - it is more than interesting for you create the Philosopher Stone on yourself.
Outlook With version 1.8 we've implemented the first recipe .... the following versions will include additional recipe, which you have to discover.
Upgrade information 1.8
When you upgrade from Version 1.7 the SavedGame should work without any incompatibilties.
When you upgrade from an earlier version then we strongly recommend to start a clean, new game.

It's a really big update. As before, we have incorporated many of your suggestions, especially on the GamePlay management. With the new feature "Power & Intrigue" we have started to build up a new game strategy, which represents another challenge for our hero Ulfberth. With this in mind, we have also revised all dialogues (content & translation) and adapted it to the new game features.
We also extended the terrain with many new natural elements - rocks, trees and landscapes.
We have also optimized the entire code base in order not to suffer from the increased performance requirements disadvantages in graphics performance.
Also, the handling of the game itself - rotation lock, key and mouse operation, we have expanded. Below is the details of these changes.
The changes described above goes deep into the structure of gameobjects, dialogues and terrain. Therefore, after upgrading to version 1.7, we recommend to start a fresh game.

Changes in detail
Power & Intrigue Some of the inhabitants have turned away from the old faith and became Christians. They keep their new faith in secret and are no longer well-disposed to you. They want to spread their new faith, but you and your followers are a big obstacle. Therefore they try to sabotage all your efforts to let the island grow to prosperity and power. They burn down houses, grapple with your enemies, they do not even shrink from murder. You have to identify them quickly and make them harmless, because the damage they do is significant and will eventually lead to your destruction.
Chest Key Most of the hidden treasure chests now require a master key. Find it and carefully check the contents of the chest before using or taking it. But this key does not help with every chest - some chests you have to open by force, others take you violence extremely bad.
Potions - Treasure View and Hazard View These potions have been expanded to reveal now most of the treasures and most traps. But remember, you still can not use the potions portioned. Once activated, they consume themselves.
Additional key assignment We have added many new keystrokes, so that you can reach relevant menu items now also by pressing a button. The function of the previous keys is retained.
Rotation lock camera Normally, your view though a camera is aligns with the mouse cursor movement. However, this also applies if you want to reach a menu item located on the edge of the screen - the camera moves with the mouse.
Now, by pressing the key [q] the camera rotation is blocked, so that you can now reach the menu items with the mouse cursor, without any camera moving. Pressing the [q] key again unlocks the camera. In the course of this change, we have also connected other menu functions to keystrokes.

Quality Settings The speed of the graphics depends not only on the depth of detail, pixel quality and graphics settings, but also on the number of objects to be displayed. That's why you can also choose the level of quality before every launch of VikingJourney, allowing you to customize the game to suit your PC and its performance.
In version 1.7 we now offer additional options to choose the game settings so that the game behaves optimally with your PC.

Means: in order to optimise the performance the Quality Level 'Good' does not show up every detail of the scene.
Instead of this the Quality Level 'Beautiful': it shows every detail of the scene, but eats a lot of pc power to present this. If you further increase the quality level - the texture quality, the shadow quality and the light quality increases.
It's best you check yourself what is most suitable for you.

Screen freeze:
we changed back from newly integrated high performance Vulcan back to the Windows Standard Graphics Api. Reason: it seems that in rare cases it could come to a freeze of the screen due to Shader Error in Vulcan/Unity.
Hints Game Loading time:
When VikingJourney is started the first time the whole Scene and textures needs to be loaded into memory. This can take some time (on less powerful PC up to 2 minutes). In this stage all necessary preparations and caching will be prepared).
Loading time depends also strongly on Screen Size & Quality settings of the Start Menu. Lower settings and lower screen size will load much faster.
The next time (New game or Saved game) VikingJourney starts the Main Scene the loading time is significantly decreased.
With this version , we issued some technical improvements and enhanced a lot of gameplay.
Enhancements in Gameplay:
The Terrain of Skullwald, Kalstark and Westfjord has been enriched with new textures, heigh maps and additionally treasures and traps.
Right from the beginning there're now two Swordmen in place to protect you from enemies. Later on you can icrease the number of swordmen by choosing the appropiate fief letter.
Enemies can occur now from level 1 on. The number of enemies is related to the choosen difficulty degree.
The Headquarter of Ranulf, the Shamane did receive some new functions. Check the tools on the table - when it appears.
Both areas Kalstark and Westfjord - where you can transform to - has been extended (Buildings, Weapons, Treasure). The related Transform function has been improved.
VillageGuards and Enemies did receive more detailed armor and weapons.
The combat animations of the VillageGuards and the Enemies has been extended and optimized.
The Player - Ulfberth got a new WeaponController , which makes the handling of Sword & Shield more accurate.
Enhancements in Technics:
Lock Camera Rotation: By pressing [q] during gameplay the MouseLook Rotation will be blocked and the Camera is no longer following the Mouse Cursor. Pressing [q] again will unlock the Camera Rotation again.
Increased Rendering Performance: from this version on we use different technics to improve the graphic performance (i.e. we're using the Vulcan API). By this the Graphic Performance on all our test maschines increases by 50-80% without showing any incompatibilty issues.
Tips:
Due to the many and the very deep structural changes (terrain, textures, object structure and animations) 'Saved Games' from earlier version did not cover all of the above mentioned changes and should be avoided.
New update - Viking Journey 1.5 (25.08.2018)

in this update to version 1.5 we've concentrated on increasing the combat and battle system. Also we let enemies attacks occur more often and earlier.
Core changes:
village guards & the enemies have now more an better weapons.
during a battle the village guards can now jump away from the attacker
village guards & enemies have a new dying animation
General: VikingJourney works a bit like 'Myst' and 'Riven' (you might know). Like in such games - valuable information is spread over the island, but in hidden places. You need to find it and to talk also to the bailiff and all other inhabitants. They all gave you information - some stupid, some important. Read carefully, because the information is a bit cryptic.
Some tips to survive Level 1 (more to come later)
Newbies in VikingJourney playing the EASY-difficulty level, get many infos, tips and additional views, which helps to understand better the way the game works. All other difficulty level, does not contain such additional help.
you better concentrate on setting up your economy and other essential to survive - Build Production Buildings, start rawmaterial production, make sea trade and increase silver income. But be aware: nothing works automatically - you need to find the trick, to get it work.
deadly traps are spread all over the island. Thorvaldson has implemented it years ago to make it difficult for enemies to overtake the island. But they are also dangerous for you. Avoid them .... later on you can ask the Shaman for a potion to make traps visible.
you're lacking the defending VillageGuards in the early stage. The only one who can defeat the enemies - is you. But therefore you need your very first weapon - the pike. Find it early - its nearby the headquarter, but hidden.
when enemies are attacking you and the people, you need to secure your village people by stopping the current production of the building. That is only way to secure them. Well, of course you can rescue dead people later (with the Shaman's help) - but this is an expensive thing.
when you meet the requirements - Jarl Thorvaldson will offer (on his visits) you a fief. Only with a valid fief letter you will be able to build up a protective wall around your village and get the strong figthing village guards from Thorvaldson.
Update Viking Journey 1.3 (at 01.08.2018)
Over the past 8 weeks we have received a comprehensive and mostly constructive response to version 1.2 - thanks for that. We have now worked hard and incorporated most of the addressed changes. The result are many, profound changes and optimizations to the characters, the island environment and the gameplay itsself.
Most of the animations has been reworked, the gameplay was adapted and the difficulty levels reworked. Especially in the difficulty mode "Easy" there are many additional views and help to make it easier for a newbie to get started. In addition, there are additional settings for the mouse sensitivity and the background sound, but also in the main scene can be reached.
Important NOTE:
Due to the profound structural changes, especially in the object relations stored games from previous versions are not longer compatible with this update and can not be continued.
Changes in detail:
In general we have increased the elements for adventures & battle and let them begin earlier in Level 1.
The weapon function of the player and its operation has been renewed. Key [1] = Attack with Pike. Key [2] = attack with sword. Key [3] = Attack with battle ax (from version 1.4). Key [4] = attack with bow. Button [5] = attack with fireball. The targeting is done with the mouse pointer.
The terrain has been expanded to include additional topologies, find objects and traps (all levels).
The sound management and sound effects has been completely redesigned.
In bankruptcy the player goes to jail instead of dying (all levels)
In the Easy Playmode, the player receives a serving of protective potion that protects him for 12 hours (in-game time)
In Easy Playmode, the player gains additional views for assistance.
The number of village guards has been increased for the difficulty levels "Middle" and "Difficult".
The animations of the bailiff Horolf have been improved and his AI extended (all levels)
New Animations and AI Behaviors for Residents (Level 2+), All Workers (All Levels), Construction Sites (All Levels), and Combat Teams (Level 2+)
The pirate port has been redesigned. He now receives palisades, a warhorn and a new AI. (from level 4)
The major tent of Ranulf -the shaman- receives additional functions, e.g. Fellow travelers on trading trips (from level 4)
The Quest manager and the reward system have been developed in content and process (all levels)
The Trading book for the maritime trade has been further developed and simplified in its use (all levels)
The watch function of the enemies (black birds, guard tower crews) receives a new monitoring function that allows the player to slip undetected.
The mobile enemies (pirates, bats, spiders) receive a revised AI that will improve the attacking ability on players & friends. In addition, the raiding parties can destroy locked gates now.
