Virtual Escape: The Play Room

Wash your language! - Patch 4

Hi all,

Today brings a patch that has been in development for some time now. About a year ago I decided to revisit this game, as it had been a while since I last opened it. What I wanted to ensure was that the code base was backed up somewhere better to ensure the longevity and support of the game. In doing so, I also decided that I wanted to redo a lot of the backend systems to allow better support for other headsets, notably the Oculus Rift.

So all the old code was removed and re-built from the ground up. While you won't notice a huge change to the game itself, the controls and input for the game have vastly been improved. Oculus Rift users will now notice that the game can be played seated without the need to grab objects off the floor. You can now simply point at an object and use the thumbsticks to push/pull the object from you.

Also another major change coming in this patch is some censorship. Since we launched the game we have had some comments/feedback regarding the use of strong language used in the game. At first we felt this was relevant to the games themes, however we found that we ended up alienating a large portion of players whom might not want to hear such strong language. In addition, some of the dialogue was also adjusted to be slightly less dark than it was before.

As such, we are patching out all the rude language today. As time goes on you gain insight and can reflect upon choices made in the past that may have not been the best decision at the time. Hope everyone understands as this will now allow a wider audience to enjoy the game.

This update is a big one and bugs might crop up since the last release. For the most part it is stable and runs as it did almost 4 years ago now! But please report any issues you find on the discussion board.

Thanks again.

Patch notes:

  • Improvements made to Oculus Rift Controls. Users can now grab objects from afar and bring them closer.
  • Teleport arc was redone and now displays all the time
  • Teleporting now can be done on either controller and not just the right controller
  • Removed strong language from the game
  • Adjusted dialogue to be thematically less dark
  • Adjusted how credits are displayed

The Oculus Patch! - Patch 3

Hi all,

Today we have an exciting patch for Virtual Escape: The Playroom, and in response to your suggestions we have added basic support for the Oculus Rift!

The game should now be compatible with this device, allowing you to complete and hopefully enjoy the game using the Oculus Rift.

That said; please understand that whilst we have added support for the Oculus Rift, this game was originally designed for the HTC Vive, and so with this in mind some aspects of the game may be slightly trickier than intended.

Furthermore, as always we welcome your feedback and encourage you to please report any bugs and issues you may find along the way, and we will do our best to respond and patch accordingly.

Thanks again for your patience, we hope you enjoy!

A New Name - Virtual Escape: The Play Room - Patch 2

Hi all,

First of all I would like to thank all the players we've had over the past year. Your feedback has been greatly received and we are truly grateful.

We've been a bit quiet since release, we know. This is because we all decided to take some time off to reflect upon the game's release, just over a year ago. During this time we were proud to have released our first game on Steam, to much positive feedback. However, it has come to our attention that we could have approached some things slightly better. As with most things, you learn from your mistakes, and the first of those we felt was the game's title.

The title “Unforgiven: Missing Memories” was decided upon quite late into development. We had the story and most of the game complete, but a title was still missing. Eventually through various discussions we agreed on the title, however we now realise that this could have been a mistake. For the most part, the current name does not really indicate what the game is about. We imagine that most players would pass by our game and not really take much notice of it. Hence, we have decided to rename the game to something more eye catching, and which explains the game at a glance. Therefore, I would like to announce that Unforgiven: Missing Memories will now be known as: Virtual Escape: The Play Room.

Unforgiven: Missing Memories was originally intended to be a series of games, all connected with an on-going narrative. However, from player feedback it became clear that the story was a bit confusing and we could have made it better, and whilst we appreciate that some of you enjoyed the addition of a narrative, the general consensus was that it was unnecessary.

Ultimately, with the current title “Virtual Escape: The Play Room”, and all future escape game releases, we have decided to abandon the narrative and leave it in its current position. However, To those few who are interested in knowing and understanding exactly what was going on, and how we intended to develop the narrative, please feel free to reply upon the community boards and we will do our best to conclude and tie up any loose ends.

With this in mind, I would like to say that we’re now aiming to create a new series of games, known as "Virtual Escape". Just like real world escape rooms, we aim to create a variety of themed escapes. Each will fall into the "Virtual Escape" brand, but each escape room will have a unique brand/theme. Therefore, I would also like to announce that we do have another game currently in development. It’s still early days, but if all goes to plan we’re hoping for a release sometime next year.

Finally, as always we would like to thank you for your patience and support. We hope our game brought you as much enjoyment to play as it brought us to develop. Ultimately, it has helped a trio of young developers achieve their dream of making and releasing their own indie games, and for that we are eternally grateful, and hope that long may it continue.

To end, the patch notes:

- Changed Name of Game to "Virtual Escape: The Play Room"

- Updated Engine version to 4.18

- Spectator screen is now full-screen, makes guest viewing more pleasant

- Changed how something breaks yet again

- Added physics to telephone wire
