Voltaire: The Vegan Vampire

EARLY ACCESS - PATCH NOTES - V0.82.01

NEW!

  • New veggies: Poppycorns!

These particularly colorful plants are known for spontaneously combusting under intense pressure and heated arguments - keep your cool around them!

  • New baddies: Cornycobs!

As an extremely volatile species, Cornycobs have a rather peculiar defense mechanism: splitting into several tiny critters with a pop!

  • New summons & pets: Cornypops!

An intense mix of bad temper and fiery attitude make Cornypops both a powerful ally and a dangerous foe. Will you turn on the heat or shall cooler heads prevail?

BUGFIXES

  • Rooty-Frooties saw an eye doctor and can finally blink on their own (you’ll see!)
  • Fixed an issue that could cause Hogrider to get stuck running in place
  • Fixed an issue that could cause Sandrhino to get stuck running in place
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the Bloody Soil skill to remain active even after resetting your skill tree
  • Traps placed by players are now using a 3D sound origin to help prevent overly loud stacking noises when loading a game
  • Several stacking sounds have been normalized to avoid other overly loud interactions
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the UI to display two different interactions at once when pausing the game with the level-up skill selector open
  • Fixed the formatting of some quest descriptions to avoid UI overlapping on a Steam Deck
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the “more info” text boxes in the Veggiepedia to not update their size immediately
  • Fixed an issue that was affecting the clicking sounds in the main menu
  • Several images have been optimized for improved quality and load time

BALANCE

  • Poppycorns have been added to C’thul’s gifts and treasure chests
  • Rooty-Frooties’ drop chance has been increased in C’thul’s gifts and treasure chests
  • Tutorial quest rewards have been adjusted to award the player more consumable veggies instead of a prevalence of new seeds
  • Improved the range and responsiveness of the aiming assist on ranged projectiles when playing with a controller

EARLY ACCESS - PATCH NOTES - V0.81.04

NEW!

  • New veggies: Rooty-Frooties!
  • Look out for these chaos-infused trees, they may be capable of growing random veggies, but they may also be looking right back at you if you stare too long!
  • New baddies: Frootlings!
  • Worshippers of chaos, fans of overly complex sunglasses, and the first baddies to have a long-ranged attack behavior!
  • New defensive plants: Dartvines!
  • These aggressive vineplants will defend your crops with deadly accuracy from a very long distance! Craft them at your Alchemy table or bring plenty of offerings to C’thul for a chance to find their seeds.
  • New alchemical recipes: craft your own C’thul offerings!
  • Exchange your most commonly found offerings for rarer ones and enjoy C’thul’s greatest gifts!
  • New costume variation: Morgana’s Unicorn Onesie!
  • After getting a “lil’ jelly” of Voltaire’s latest drip, Morgana finally got a new costume variation - as requested by players!

BUGFIXES

  • Retroactively granted achievements for reaching level 10, level 20 and finishing the tutorial quests (for players who had previously completed these in the demo version)
  • Fixed an issue that could cause some UI overlays in the alchemy table to lose its formatting
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the “hold” interaction to play itself without canceling the animation, when attempting to unlock Reliquarium Boons without enough Soulstones
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the player to lose track of their selection in the Wardrobe menu while using a controller
  • Fixed an issue that was causing an overly loud sound to play whenever you defeated El Capitan
  • Fixed some instances of typos or mismatched wording reported by players (thank you!)
  • Fixed some instances of duplicated clicking sounds while navigating option menus
  • Leveling up and selecting a new skill during an active night cycle will no longer display the level-up prompt with the same selections once the night is over
  • Defensive plants will now properly change targets if their original target moves out of their maximum range
  • Improved the wording displayed on the overlay of trees that yield crops in two different days, to better reflect that you must to wait another day to harvest it again
  • Completing two or more quest objectives at once will now properly display each reward received in text, when you interact with the mailbox to deliver them
  • Depleted crowberry bushes and dig spots already dug up are now properly saved on exit, instead of always being respawned on game load

BALANCE

  • Soulreapers’ HP base value increased from 5 to 6
  • Hogrider’s (Boss) HP base value increased by 20%
  • Base amount of Soulstones dropped from Bosses lowered from 15 to 10 (more on this soon, there will be new rewards at a later stage)
  • Crowberry Bushes now drop 2 berries at once, but can only be harvested once - meaning you only need to interact with them once for the same amount as before
  • Crowberries are now also affected by nutrition decay (consuming several of the same veggies in a row), keeping the same base amount of hunger restored, but a minimum value of 1. To prevent nutrition decay, vary your consumption of different veggies and pay attention to the number indicated when you hover over each consumable in your inventory
  • Harvesting Crowberries will no longer count towards “collecting seeds” quests, as intended
  • Consuming veggies immediately after fainting or going to sleep with 100 hunger no longer removes the extra enemy aggressiveness debuff, as intended

Patch V0.80.62

Hello! We're back again with another quick patch!

  • Heavily improved the hitbox and accuracy of melee attacks
  • Fixed the scaling and positioning of Player1's HUD while playing co-op
  • Fixed an issue that caused items dropped to the floor when receiving rewards with a full inventory to not be awarded in the correct amount
  • Fixed an issue that caused opened treasure chests to not de-spawn between biome transitions
  • Fixed an issue that caused Soulbarriers to not have the correct amount of HP after transitioning biomes if the player had unlocked soulbarrier HP boons
  • Fixed an issue that could cause two different actions to attempt to display at once while playing with a controller, such as consuming a veggie and opening the mail box at the same time
  • TAB is now properly displayed as a secondary keybind to open the Inventory

EARLY ACCESS - PATCH NOTES & DEVLOG 1 - V0.80.6

  • A new Portal indicator has been added and will display whenever your uncles are ready to take you to a new biome
  • A Music Volume slider has been added to the sound options
  • Discord & Twitter buttons have been added to the main menu

BUGFIXES

  • Fixed an issue that could result in the player being able to cast an infinite amount of permanent traps
  • Fixed an issue with the skill “Gravity Well” that could cause traps not to visually disappear upon activation
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the “Fashionista” achievement (unlock 4 cosmetics) to not be awarded when it should
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the Bugbug boss to get stuck in flight mode and never land, becoming impossible to defeat
  • Fixed an issue when feeding C’thul that could cause it to not reward the player when hitting the purple or smaller blue stripe in the minigame
  • Fixed the way UI and HUD scaling works in ultrawide resolutions to prevent the vertical clipping of some elements in high resolutions
  • Fixed a couple of tutorial videos not properly displaying on Steam Deck
  • Fixed a couple of textual typos reported by players
  • Fixed several instances of sound artifacting

BALANCE

  • All defensive plants will now dry up if not watered after 1 day instead of 3

  • The total experience points necessary to reach level 20 have been slightly increased
  • Soulstone Flowers will now gain a +1HP buff when planted next to each other instead of a double-dropping buff

WHAT’S NEXT?

We have been taking notes of all your feedback and will continue to do so for as long as it takes to make Voltaire the best game it can be.

This has been an amazing launch week and we feel great about the future of the game, especially thanks to all the awesomely supportive comments and heartwarming reviews you have been writing (thank you!), so we’re ecstatic to see that a small but wholesome community is already forming around our floaty vampire.

Our immediate plans are to tackle the most pressing bugfixes and adjustments you have been commenting on first, along with a steady stream of new content for you to enjoy every week during this upcoming month.

The great news is that, overall, you are reporting that the game is very stable and no major gamebreaking issues are happening very often, if at all. This means that we can safely focus on adding onto this base right away, tackling both new content and quality of life improvements all at once.

We have noticed a prevalent comment about the extent of our tutorial dialogues, as well as the fact that players often learn things by themselves way before uncles Frank and Stein ask them to perform those tasks for the first time.

With that in mind, we will be making adjustments to ensure our tutorials become more reactive to what the player has already done, as well as trimming down on superfluous texts where we feel like it is not adding to the humorous nature of the experience or containing essential information, which is also something we will try to keep in mind in future dialogues and textual information.

Besides this tutorial review, we’re also aware that you are craving for more variety (of every form!) so we will start by introducing new veggies, new defensive plants and new enemy critters that perform more complex roles, especially when it comes to making combat more dynamic.

Along with these smaller updates, we will also be focusing on introducing more constructible elements and random-chance encounters that will allow you to spend your materials and overflowing veggies in a meaningful way, which is something we will expand a lot further on in upcoming DevLogs.

Besides all of this, we will continue to cook-up larger patches that contain new activities, characters and game modes that break the mold of what you have already experienced, as well as constantly improving on balance and game feel along with your help and feedback.

We feel that this is a good recipe to begin our Early Access journey with, and we sincerely hope that you will tag along as we create, transform, and improve this adventure full of veggies, compassion, and spooky, heart-warming fun.

Ta-ta!

Release Date Announcement!!

Hello, non-floaty human friends! We have some very exciting news for you all today!

Voltaire will be embarking on his vegan journey on February 27th on PC for Early Access!

We can’t wait for you to make history (and Dracula angry…that’s just a bonus).

Much like growing a veggie, it takes a good amount of time, care and nurture to grow a healthy community around a new game. As developers, we have experienced the process of going from an idea straight to the final product in the past, which taught us a valuable lesson about the importance of player-driven feedback. The opportunity to meet a community who cares about the game, and the ability to nurture and improve it through real-time feedback before it reaches its final form is really important to us - so we decided to launch Early Access for between 6-12 months before we fully release the game.

These are some of the features already available in the game:

🦇 8 cool bosses to defeat
🦇 8 whimsy biomes to explore
🦇 6 weather effects to overcome
🦇 A skill tree with 60 modifiers to pick from
🦇 A choice of 15 passive boons to progress
🦇 Over 20 veggies to grow
🦇 A handful of neat costumes to unlock
🦇 An introduction to the storyline
🦇 Full controller support
🦇 Split-screen local co-op
🦇 Lots of humor!

We have a lot more we’ve planned to add to the game as well, such as:
🦇 Igor the Glutton
🦇 Miss Dawn
🦇 Cave Dwellings
🦇 Constructibles
🦇 Pacifist Mode
🦇 Boss Rush Mode
🦇 Seasonal Events

Besides the sneak peek into our roadmap, you can expect more of what you will already be able to enjoy right now! That means more veggies to grow, more biomes to discover, more bosses to fight, more activities to explore and more story to unfold.

And the devs said unto their community, let there be feedback! We can’t wait to see your vegan journeys too, so make sure you can show us by joining our community on Discord or following us on Twitter while you wait for launch!

Ta-ta for now 🦇

Friends, Foes, and Clothes, Oh My! November Devlog

Hello, non-floaty humans!

We’re so excited to share some news with you!

Voltaire the Vegan Vampire will be multiplayer!

At release you'll be able to play the whole game in plug-and-play local co-op, with saved progression for everyone - that means each player gets their own inventory, skills and costumes to pick from. We can all embark on our vegan vampire journey together ❤️

WAIT! Did you say costumes?

You bet! While you progress through the game you'll be able to unlock several costumes for both Voltaire and his floaty soulmate - Morgana! Some costumes will be hidden behind mysterious challenges and silly achievements, so keep your eyes peeled for opportunities to prove yourself worthy of a shiny new wardrobe 😉 Take a peek at some of our cool clothes here!

Hold on! Does that mean I can play as Morgana?

While you will be following the story from Voltaire's point of view, you can indeed play the whole game as a veggie-loving vampiress!

Thank you, as always, for your support during development! If you’d like to join our House, check us out on Discord or Twitter, We can’t wait to see you there!

DEVLOG #4 - Magic, Seeds, and Treasures, oh my! ?

Hello, non-floaty humans!

We’re so excited to share some updates with you!

We all know Voltaire has a farming aspect. After all, we need lots of yummy veggies to survive the vegan way! Sometimes farming can get boring, though, so we decided to (veganly) beef up the activities list.

There are many activities that complement the farming aspect and are intertwined incentives to organically lead you in your quest - for survival and for veganism!

Potions, explosions, science, oh my!

Alchemy is one example of our other(worldly) activities we have ready for you.
In your house, you have an alchemy table, and through this table, another world awaits you!

On another note - look at how cute our little house is on the inside! Anyway, here’s a close up look at the specific table we’re talking about:

Complete all of the recipes for bragging rights and our eternal undying affection! (And maybe an achievement…? Achievement hunters, keep your eyes peeled! 👀 )

Another example is digging.

Digging to clear out fields and harvesting may yield moldy treats.
These treats can then be offered to C’thul (our version of fishing!) in exchange for its gifts, such as soulstones, just like the screenshot below.

Why are soulstones important?

Soulstones can then be used to unlock new boons, collect new cosmetics or even fulfill alchemical recipes that yield rare new seeds. These new seeds can then be sowed, watered and harvested thus completing a full circle of activities that started by simply digging a new field! Ah, the circle of life definitely moves us all. Well, sort of. We are undead, after all.

You keep talking about harvesting and gaining stuff. What if my inventory fills up and I don’t want this…stuff?

It’s okay if not everything sparks joy and you wish to remove it from your inventory! Composting is a way to both clean up your inventory and a way to level up faster, by turning unwanted seeds into useful XP to level up. Press F to pay respects (and to compost all seeds) 😉

One more example of other(worldly) activities include treasure hunting!

You can hunt treasures across the map in order to earn unique rewards and XP. This allows for some fun and immersive exploration! We love shiny treasure 😭

Exploring the maps is another fun and exciting way to gain new items. You can also just simply enjoy the views!

Well, the sun’s going down, and you know what that means - it’s time for us to defend OUR crops from those pesky minions (known as bugs) by The Dracula himself. They won’t defeat themselves!

So thank you, as always, for your support during development! If you’d like to join our House, check us out on Discord, Twitter, or TikTok. We can’t wait to see you there!
