Demo Graphics & Animation Update

I'm pleased to provide the demo with some great updates that improve the appearance and feeling of Wacambria Island. See below list for some things to expect when playing the demo.

Updates that affect the Demo:
- Death dissolve animation on enemies
- Smooth animation transitions
- Depth of Field Fog
- New character models
- Added controller support
- Added Key / Controller button assignment and adjusters

Updates toward full game release:
- New terrain rendering system
- New environmental fog simulations
- New island textures and models
- New armor sets
- Improved previous armor sets

Misc Bug Fixes

Bug Fixes:
- Removed Camera Shake / Jitter when moving the character
- Softened the cameras movement when moving closer to, or further away from the character
- Added a smoothing effect to the cinematic cameras

Wacambria Island in Next Fest!



Thank you for checking out Wacambria Island during the Next Fest celebration. I do hope you try the demo and wishlist for updates on the full release!

This version of the demo includes updates that are targeted at smoothing out the camera and adapting the user interfaces to more screen resolutions.

*The Demo for Wacambria Island has undergone significant changes, and if you have the Demo downloaded previously, I highly encouraged you to reset your save data. This will ensure you have the most recent version of the game and can use the most recent features.*

To Reset your Save File:
1 Goto options in the game
2 Select "Delete Save Data"
3 On the next screen select "Yes" to confirm

This will reset your copy of Wacambria Island to the beginning intro scene and also load the most recent level and Item changes.

Development Update for Wacambria Island

A lot has been happening...



Wacambria Island has been updated substantially since my last announcement in April....wow its been a while...maybe too long. Since then, I've continued to diligently add meaningful content such as (but not liimited to) locations, items, quests, dialog and more. Below are a few highlighted improvements or additions.

Quest Development



My primary focus in the last few months have been to iron out the quest line and implement all of the character dialogs. Also insuring the correct rewards are given for the right quests. New items and locations have been built to enhance all quests and especially the main quest line.

Home Purchase & Decoration



The in game mechanics regarding home purchasing and decorating have been better developed. A system has been created for purchasing décor or materials for your home.

Locations



Multiple biomes and locations have been cleaned up, better decorated and new vegetation added.

Enhanced Biomes & New Characters


Enhanced Biomes


Wacambria's main map has undergone some exciting new changes! These changes include environmental effects, local atmosphere changes and increased foliage density. These combined tools provide Wacambria Island with a greater diversity of environmental feelings.


New Dangers


New enemies have been spotted throughout Wacambria! These include more physical, and some rather ghastly appearances,


Enhanced Cities & Towns


As new local environmental and foliage density features are added, Wacambrias cities and towns get revamped to utilize them. Each location will utilize unique features to give them individuality and a sense of presence!


Main Quest Line Progress


Many of the features outlined above are facilitating the main quest line of Wacambria Island. A substantial portion of the quest line has been built along with cinematics and unique objects that are needed for the story.

Additional Updates



Dragon Pet - Mr. Jingles



Throughout your adventure in Wacambria Island you'll befriend Mr. Jingles, a loyal and helpful dragon pet! Use Mr. Jingles to grab treasure, activate switches and more as you explore the island.

The Fallen Guardians



Ancient protectors of the island have awoken and now swarm the local mines, caves and ruins. Sworn to keep evil from the island these guardians have themselves lost their ability to know good from evil.

Camera - The game will launch with a few pretty cool camera options to help get screen shots and just check out your characters loadout.
Cinematics - New camera options have been added for me to create better cinematic shots.
Controls - Full controller support is scheduled and should be available at launch.

Achievements, Bloom and More!


Light Bloom


A new exciting visual feature of Wacambria Island is its use of light bloom! Light Bloom will add glow and brightness to lights and self illuminated objects. This feature comes at a low performance cost and adds a huge visual appeal. Light Bloom and the objects that use this feature are totally configurable and allow for a variety of effects.

Achievements


The Game Engine has been updated to award steam achievements. This added functionality will help give the player a sense of reward and allow Wacambria Island to be trackable from the steam pages for each player. An achievement strategy is still being developed in order to best utilize this feature.

Controller Support


The stages of assigning Gamepad or Controller support have begun! I try to add this functionality later in the game development cycle due to feature changes and overall gameplay feel. Because I've mostly defined the player control experience with the Mouse & Keyboard, I have some reference points for how I want the controller feel.


Game Progress


Significant progress has been made to the main quest line in Wacambria Island. The quest line now progresses through nearly 70% of the main world map and includes 4 new cave, ruin and city buildouts.

Improved Character Models, Cinematic Cameras & More!


Improved Character Models


The characters in Wacambria Island have had a much needed makeover and now look more fabulous than ever! Featuring better mesh configuration for animations and adorable facial expressions. A in game character customization tool has been added to ease my workload and open the possibility of player character customization.


Camera System


I've poured a great deal of energy into building a camera system to design cut scenes and custom camera segments. In order to make this camera system fully customizable, an additional scripting system was designed to create and manage these segments (along with a plethora of other supporting systems to properly manage the camera).


Other Improvements


The whole of the engine has undergone a performance optimization pass and now runs roughly 15% faster on my test machines. Camera shake and stutter issues (in certain situations) have been identified and polished out. A few new scripting systems have been designed to help manage quest building, camera sequences and event timing. I finally designed an in game text - script editor that allows me to write and test the scripts on the fly. Pretty exciting!

Combat, Cooking, Lighting & More!


More Cooking!

The cooking system in Wacambria Island was updated to make it easier to use and a more enjoyable experience. Now when you use the oven, the camera will show you the items you've placed in the oven. A nifty slider bar will show you the cooking progress and .... Tada! Your favorite dish will be complete! Additionally recipe cards will scattered across the island unlocking new dishes to make.


New Lighting System!

Let there be light! Specifically lights that really add depth to some of Wacambrias darker spaces. With the new lighting system: caves, homes, castles and all other spaces will be delightfully illuminated. Because this is a home made game engine, this feature is particularly rewarding and exciting to me. I've gone through and ensured these lights are programmed to have the least amount of performance impact and a wide range of versatility for designing.


Stealth Mode Activated!

With the Mandible Clans strength in numbers, there may be times when its best to sneak past the guards then engage in direct combat (and attract a crowd). Try your best not to be too loud and make sure you hide behind something if they are meandering your way. Sneaking in Wacambria Island comes with many features that will make it fun and enjoyable time after time!


Combat Essentials

A great deal of time has been spent on Wacambria Island's combat system. While attacking, the animations now play smoother, and when chaining attacks the hits feel much more natural. NPCs also use some evasion, blocking and dodging tactics to spice up the fight.

Other Notable Mentions:
- New quests have been implemented along with supporting characters
- New locations added and old locations revisited to add features.
- Better / Smoother camera
- Improved platforming collision
- Enemy camps added with captive villagers that the player must free

Keep an eye out for new announcements and further updates.
As I bring Wacambria Island closer to completion I'll have a clearer idea of a good release date. I'll keep you all posted as to when that will be.
