Wake World

"Where are we?" Project Wake World Devlog #0

Hey there, fellow gamer assassins!

I'm Keli, the mind behind Project Wake World, and I'm thrilled to finally share our progress with you in this inaugural Steam blog post. The journey of creating this indie game has been nothing short of incredible, filled with late nights, creative breakthroughs, Dread, and a whole lot of passion.

Wake World is not just another game; it's a labor of love that has been in the making for over two years. Which ultimately makes it just another game.... It's an open world crafting game that sends the player with up to 3 buddies on a quest to save the world! (generic i know but I'm working on that...) Anyways this simple premise bundled with some advanced steamboats and deep rpg elements is what i though would be the perfect game when i started developing this project over two years ago.

The good news is that it's more than 70% feature complete but the bad news is there is basicly no content yet and I'm going through my third burnout and have recently kickstarted my carrier as a software engineer (that last part is not bad but it's very time consuming :D). I will keep coming back and will be working on this project until i see it shipped(pun) or die trying!!!

Anyways i just wanted to start documenting the process a bit here on steam, share a few milestones and maybe some funny bugs?

Skill Trees:

This is the newest addition to the Wake World feature family and most likely my favorite.
A skill tree in a game serves as a visual representation of a player's progression and the choices they make in developing their character. It adds depth to the gameplay by allowing players to customize their characters based on their preferred playstyle, creating a semi unique playthough for each player. Progressing the skilltree will be essential when exploring the world of wakes as many of the abilities will open paths that are not visible or accessible at lower skill levels.

The skill tree is devided into three main sections with each one containing subsections

The main three being

  • Body -> Everything physical
  • Karma -> This is what we concider "magic" in the world of wakes
  • Mind -> mental abilities such as navigation or bartering with vendors

Quests sneak peek:

Im particularly exited for the mind skill tree as i want to have some farming at some point (even on the ship, portable plants anyone?!?!?) as well as better sailing with skills such as the "Wave Whisper" ability

In other news i have been hard at work with the new Quest system and it's up and running and most importantly wayyy better than the old one. Ill go into details next time but this one is component based meaning you can just drag and drop in what you want a quest to consist of and wolah!

After working on it i've come to the decision on Wake World not being very heavy on quests as i much prefer natural exploration (especially after playing Elden Ring) but i belive Quests always have their place in this game, even if they are only supplimentary

FINALLY SOME PROPER ART!

After going through 100s of artists for concepting i have finally hit the jackpot! An artist called nuclear_shelter reached out with some stunning pieces and i knew he would do me proud.

Having some proper art completely changes my perception on the game and dilutes my imposter syndrome if even just a little. Making the steam page look more presentable doesn't hurt either...

That's it for now, Catch y'all later where we will discuss more Wake World features!
