FV107 Scimitar: Single-Edged Sword!



Today we’ll be taking a look at the FV107 Scimitar, a British light tank with a 30 mm autocannon on a light chassis, capable of positioning itself well around the map and causing havoc to the enemy!

Vehicle History

The FV107 Scimitar dates back to 1967, when the (CVR(T)) chassis was first designed to replace the Saladin armored car. In addition to the FV101 Scorpion, the Scimitar was also designed by Alvis as a light reconnaissance tank with 30 mm automatic fire potential. The first prototype was shown in 1971 and accepted into service in 1973, with 486 of these vehicles being produced in total.

Since 1974, the Scimitar has served in several conflicts, including the Falklands War, Gulf War, Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan. In 1982 during the Falklands War, the Blues & Royals squadron operated the Scimitar and claimed to have shot down an Argentine Skyhawk with the 30 mm autocannon. In the 1991 Gulf War, Scimitars engaged Iraqi T-62s first hand. Over 300 Scimitars remained in service with the British Army until 2023, when it was phased out for the incoming Ajax. Some other operators include Belgium with over 150 vehicles in use until 2004 and Latvia with over 120 vehicles since 2014, still in service with them today.




Meet the FV107 Scimitar!



Great Britain will be receiving a very nice light tank in the next major update, and that’s the FV107 Scimitar! This vehicle is somewhat similar to two others already in the game: the Fox, as it has the same gun, and the Striker, as it has a very similar chassis. Let’s take a closer look!




Another long-awaited light tank is arriving to Great Britain’s ground forces tree. Let’s take a look at the gun first! As with the Fox that we added earlier this year, the Scimitar features exactly the same gun and ammo — the 30 mm L21A1 RARDEN cannon that can fire APDS, APHE (SAP-I) and HEI-T rounds. Despite having a slower rate of fire than contemporary autocannons, the Scimitar can still certainly hold up against armored threats when hitting enemies from the side and rear.

Interesting: The word “Scimitar” refers to a single-edged sword with a curved blade.

As for mobility, the Scimitar is slightly inferior to the Fox due to its higher weight and tracked chassis. This vehicle comes in at around 8 tons with a top speed of 80 km/h and is almost identical as the FV102 Striker already in the game, apart from the fact that the Scimitar is smaller. These chassis have familiarities as they’re both based on the Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked) (CVR(T)) series of vehicles.




Did you know? The (CVR(T)) series of vehicles is huge! Over 3,500 vehicles were built on this chassis, including the Scorpion, Striker, Spartan, Samaritan, Sultan, Samson, Scimitar, Sabre and Stormer.

Just like the Fox, the Scimitar features light aluminum alloy armor — enough to survive hits against anything up to a .50 cal, but anything above that will knock out the 3 crew members inside. Be sure to keep this in mind in battle and support your allies by flanking and spotting with the scouting mechanic! To round it off, the Scimitar has smoke grenade launchers to conceal itself or to assist when repositioning, plus a 7.62 machine gun for good measure.

Battle Pass Vehicles: He 177 A-3/R3 Greif



Today we’ll be taking a look at the main aircraft reward for the Guided Fury Battle Pass, a long-range German bomber featuring the brand-new Hs 293 guided bomb, which is not currently in the game!

He 177 A-3/R3: A Premium Bomber for Germany at Rank IV

Development of the He 177 bomber began in Germany in 1936, with engineers tasked with creating a high-speed aircraft capable of carrying up to 1,000 kg of bombs. Heinkel engineers presented a test model in late 1937, and by early 1939, a test batch of 12 aircraft had been ordered. The creation and testing of the He 177 was fraught with difficulties, some of which were never overcome.

By the end of 1944, development was completed, but by that time the military situation had changed and the need for the He 177 had significantly decreased. In total, more than 1,000 aircraft of various modifications were produced, some of which took part in battles on the Eastern Front. Despite this, the protracted development process did not allow the He 177 to significantly influence the course of the war.

The He 177A-3/R3 modification was the first carrier of the Henschel Hs 293 gliding guided bomb. To accommodate this bomb, three external racks were installed on the aircraft with the under fuselage rack blocking the opening of the front bomb bay. He 177 A-3/R3 Greif aircraft were produced in small numbers and were used to train crews in using the Hs 293 guided bomb.



Meet the He 177 A-3/R3!



The main reward for the upcoming Guided Fury Battle Pass season is the German He 177 A-3/R3 Greif bomber, featuring the new Hs 293 guided bomb. This aircraft is not only a rare collectible, but also embodies the fantastic technology at the time. It’s also a fun and profitable aircraft that’ll be good in air, ground and naval battles. Let’s have a look!

If you’re a veteran of War Thunder air battles, you’re probably familiar with the He 177 A-5. This is a very large, but quite fast long-range German bomber with a large payload, also capable of using the first ever guided bomb used in combat, the Fritz X. The new He 177 A-3/R3 retains the main advantages of the A-5, but brings with it premium status and the new Hs 293 guided bomb. This bomb is inferior to the Fritz X in terms of warhead mass, but to launch it you don’t need to go to high altitudes and aim through a bomb sight, as the Hs 293 is essentially a guided air-to-surface missile!




How on earth does it work? The cruise engine accelerates it on the starting segment of its trajectory, and then the bomb goes into guided gliding mode. You’ll need some training with it, but after using it for bit, you’ll be able to master the guidance of this bomb and be able to accurately destroy tanks and ships with it. Oh yeah, you can also learn the basics of using these types of weapons in tutorials from the hangar, by going to Battles > Tutorial > AGM with manual guidance.

In addition to being able to launch both the Fritz X and new Hs 293, the He 177 A-3/R3 remains an impressive bomber in terms of payload. You’ll have access to regular 48 x 50 kg to 4 x 1800 kg bombs, as well as incendiary and armor-piercing bombs for destroying ships. In minimum weight configurations, this aircraft can accelerate to speeds in excess of 500 km/h (or 310~ mph for our American and British readers). To protect it from fighter aircraft or to take potshots at enemy bombers when passing by them in Air Battles, the He 177 A-3/R3 has turrets with conventional and heavy machine guns, as well as 20 mm autocannons in the tail and lower nose turrets.




As always, there’s a couple of shortcomings with the He 177 A-3/R3. That’s its large dimensions and the presence of only a pair of engines, meaning when one of them is damaged and leaking, landing this huge bomber becomes a truly difficult job.




This epic and technically stunning marvel can be yours by completing challenges in the upcoming Guided Fury Battle Pass season, starting on October 23rd. Warm up your fingers, sip some tea and play some War Thunder to level up your Battle Pass — this aircraft is worth it!

Battle Pass Vehicles: Murmansk



Today we’ll be showing you Murmansk, an American light cruiser in service with the Soviet Navy! Its multiple 152 mm guns are particularly effective against lightly armored targets, while its excellent anti-aircraft weapons and radar make this ship good against aircraft too.

Murmansk: A Premium Light Cruiser for the USSR at rank III

Vehicle History

The Milwaukee (CL-5) cruiser began her history in 1923, when she entered service with the U.S. Navy after being built at the Tacoma Shipyard. Milwaukee served in the Pacific Ocean from 1928 to 1940, and was then transferred to the Atlantic. At the beginning of World War II, she patrolled the South Atlantic, protecting convoys from enemy submarines, returned home in February 1944 for a short overhaul and was sent to serve in the North Atlantic. In March of 1944, she escorted convoy JW 58 to the USSR and, in exchange for Italian cruiser Duca d’Aosta, was transferred to the Soviet Union, receiving a new name — Murmansk.

Service in the Northern Fleet of the Soviet Navy consisted mainly of training sorties. The only combat mission was escorting convoy RA 61 in the fall of 1944. In 1949, Murmansk was returned to the United States and sent for scrap.




Meet Murmansk!



The Murmansk, formerly the American Omaha class cruiser Milwaukee (CL-5), is the main naval reward coming to the upcoming Battle Pass season, Guided Fury! Coming in at rank III in the USSR’s Bluewater fleet tree, the Murmansk boasts numerous 152 mm guns, a radar, a reconnaissance aircraft and a luxurious amount of anti-aircraft autocannons. Let’s take a look!




In general, Murmansk will be familiar to those of you who have played the American cruiser USS Raleigh. This is a fast, well-armed and relatively survivable ship. The main caliber of the Murmansk is 10 x 152 mm guns. This large caliber does mean though that you’ll have a slightly longer reload time compared to similar ships, but the one-time damage with many hits at once fully justifies this! The next advantage of the Murmansk is its anti-aircraft capabilities. Firstly, thanks to numerous anti-aircraft weapons of 40 and 20 mm calibers, and secondly due to the presence of an air target detection radar. While the main caliber is reloading, the 76 mm guns (three mounts per side) can fire, which can also work against air targets with shells and radio fuzes. The Murmansk’s weapons arsenal includes torpedoes in two three-tube tubes, as well as two reconnaissance aircraft with equipment for laying smoke screens and dropping small bombs.




It’s worth noting that the Murmansk can fire a maximum of seven main battery guns at a time due to the specific location of its turrets. Only high-explosive or semi-armor piercing shells can be fired, with their damage being sufficient enough for clashes with destroyers and light cruisers, but in high-rank battles, they may not have enough penetration for effective firefights against heavy cruisers. But in battles with lightly armored opponents, Murmansk is smooth — the consistently high damage of the high-explosive shells from the main caliber guns wreaks havoc on decks and unprotected gun mounts with each successful salvo. The armor piercing shells that have good penetration easily cope with the armor of light cruisers at almost all firing ranges.

The Murmansk’s engine room is protected by 76 mm of armor, the propeller-rudder area also has protection from high-explosive damage, but the fuel tanks and gun magazines located at the waterline will be especially vulnerable to torpedoes. It’s very convenient that the speed of the Murmansk will be almost the best among light cruisers at its rank. In fact, in terms of mobility, it differs little from a destroyer!



The Murmansk light cruiser will be an easy start to researching the USSR Bluewater fleet and a good addition to existing lineups. The Vautour IIN Temporarily Discounted for the Anniversary of its First Flight!



The Vautour II was designed and produced by Sud Aviation and made its first flight on October 16th 1952. It served with the French Air Force from 1958 to 1979 and was also supplied to Israel, where it saw combat in the Six-Day War and the War of Attrition.

New Naval Loading Screen Tips



Loading screens are not just for loading the game, but can also be a source of useful information. We’ve added a bunch of tips dedicated to naval battles now. They’ll remind you about mines and depth charges, situational effectiveness of high-explosive and armor-piercing shells, features of early battleships, the ability to capture points with reconnaissance aircraft and many other things that’ll be useful for new players.

Sound Fixes



Some helicopter pilots took advantage of the ability to adjust the volume of their own engine so that when they were in cockpit view and opened the doors, they could orient themselves to what was happening around them by ear. This gave them an unintended advantage, so now with the doors open, the sound of the helicopter rotor is independent from their engine volume settings and enough to mask external sounds.

We also received a handful of feedback from players about the engine sound of the CV9030FIN, CV9035DK and CV9035NL being unrealistic, too harsh and lacking the diesel engine howl, so we’ve improved it. Have a listen to how they sound now!

An Additional Tutorial Mission for Testing Weaponry and Equipment



We recently added tutorial missions for ground vehicles, allowing you to get to know various weapons and equipment better. In today’s update we added another one! This new mission allows you to train with the Strela-10M2 and its surface to air missile with a multi-channel optical homing head. As with all tutorials, you can access these through Battles > Tutorial from the hangar.

Optical Thermal Tracking Fix


The optical and thermal imaging capture should not be distracted by chaff, but due to a bug this happened when playing SPAAGs and IFV vehicles. We’ve identified a problem here and have fixed it.

That’s not all!


You can find the full list of improvements in our main changelog! Here’s a bit more: the TNT equivalent of HMX-based explosives has been corrected, the torpedo aiming marker no longer disappears after each launch, and target markers have been added to AGM and Guided bomb tutorial missions.

Ground Vehicles



  • Vilkas — engine power has been reduced from 815 HP to 720 HP.
  • ZTZ99A — a bug that knocked out the crew when the lower frontal plate was fired at with medium-caliber HE shells has been fixed. (Report).
  • A bug that caused optical thermal tracking of IFVs and SPAAGs to get distracted by chaff has been fixed.
  • Reduced repair time and decreased durability of commander sights.
  • The TNT equivalent of octogen-based explosives has been changed. Octogen (HMX) from 1.59 to 1.656, Okfol from 1.59 to 1.62, Okfol-3.5 from 1.325 to 1.598.

  • A new ground vehicle training mission that allows you to familiarize yourself with weapons and equipment has been added. This mission can be started through the Battles > Tutorial menu from the hangar:

    • SAM with multi-channel optical homing head

Aircraft



  • F-5E (FCU), AIDC F-5E — a bug that caused the drop-tanks to not display in x-ray mode has been fixed.
  • Mi-28NM — the 9M123 Khrizantema ATGM has been replaced by the 9M123M Khrizantema-VM. The range has been increased from 6 to 9 km. The maximum speed has been reduced from 550 to 400 m/s.
  • A bug where the sunrise or sunset time would cause the sun to appear below the horizon, visually turning the time of day into night has been fixed. Please note that some cloudy weather may also appear as night, but the sun will be above the horizon. This update does not fix this specific issue.

Naval Vessels



  • A bug where there were no waves and the water surface was mirror-like and looked like it was calm in any weather has been fixed.
  • A bunch of new gameplay and control tips suggested by players have been added to the loading screen.
  • Pr. 206, Pr. 206 (Germany), Pr. 206-M — a bug that blocked torpedo firing when the bridge was destroyed has been fixed.

Sound



  • CV9030FIN, CV9035DK, CV9035NL — the engine sounds have been adjusted and reworked in accordance with feedback. Previously, the sound was considered unrealistic, too harsh and lacking the diesel engine howl.
  • For all helicopters when viewed from the cockpit with the doors open, the sound of the external rotors is now independent of their engine volume settings. Their volume is set to an acceptable average level and is designed to mask external sounds. This is done in order to eliminate open cockpit doors as a way of orientation by hearing.

Patch notes reflect only key changes, meaning they may not include a complete list of all improvements made. Additionally, War Thunder is constantly being updated and some changes may not require an update. Changes reflected in patch notes are formed by taking reactions and requests of the community from the bug reporting service, forums and other official platforms into account. T77E1: The Last Cowboy + Skink & Ram II News



Today we’re very happy to introduce the long awaited T77E1 SPAAG for the American ground forces tree! This addition will be finding its way into a lot of lineups when it arrives as part of the next major update.

T77E1: An SPAA for the USA at Rank II


At a glance:

  • Six .50 cals!
  • Fast turret traverse and high elevation angles, can fire 85 degrees upwards.
  • Gunner and Commander are exposed, but both can fire the guns.
  • Limited anti-tank ability, but great at defeating unarmored vehicles.

Vehicle History

Development started in July of 1943, when a new SPAAG based on the M24 Chaffee was requested, a modern design at the time which proved to be a malleable platform for additional development opportunities. A mockup was created in December, and two prototypes were ordered in April of 1944 after some design tweaks. The first prototype was designated as the T77 and arrived at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in July 1945. The second prototype was delivered a little later and featured several differences, enough to warrant a new designation: T77E1. Despite displaying impressive ability for its intended purpose, the conclusion of the war and the introduction of jet aircraft deemed the design ineffective for large-scale future use. While the army pursued additional testing into the early 1950s, nothing came of this development, and the prototypes were likely scrapped shortly after.




Meet the T77E1!



This six-shooter prototype will be arriving at the early ranks of the American ground forces tree in the next major update. The USA has been missing some SPAA diversity in the earlier ranks, so we’re very happy that the T77E1 is ready to join the game, and thanks to its more forgiving attributes, it’ll make a fine partner for several strong lineups well beyond its Battle Rating. We also have something to talk about regarding the Skink and Ram II! So, saddle up, and let’s take a closer look.




The T77E1 ups the firepower drastically from the M16, featuring six M2 .50 cals in the turret complete with 900 rounds of ammunition each, allowing for long bursts of sustained fire. The platform is also impressively equipped for combating low-flying aircraft on the spur of the moment — it can point upwards almost vertically at 85 degrees, in addition to having a fast traverse speed of 65 degrees per second with a top crew! 

Since the internal workings take up a fair bit of room, the gunner and commander are positioned slightly outside of the turret. Their plexiglass housing offers no tangible protection against incoming fire, but as the T77E1 features tandem controls, both crew members can fire the guns, so if the gunner is knocked out the commander can keep firing! While the hull remains functionally identical to the regular M24 Chaffee, the turret protection is reduced. The overall thickness is 12.7 mm, or half an inch — the same thickness as the M18 — enough to withstand small arms fire but not much else. Thanks to the Chaffee hull, the T77E1 maintains the same impressive mobility, allowing it to traverse the map and reposition quickly to remain less predictable.




The T77E1 will remain a fairly comfortable SPAA to use, its sustained fast traverse speed will make tracking enemy aircraft nice and easy. The six guns will also accommodate for some degree of inaccuracy thanks to their wide spread of fire, meaning enemy aircraft should think twice before a standoff with this one!

Skink and M4A5 (Ram II)

But that’s not all. In addition to the T77E1, we’ll be adding the much-loved Skink to the American tree in the next major update too! As part of this Canadian exchange, the Ram II will also be added to the British tree as a premium, with this one receiving a unique Canadian skin.

Both vehicles will not be removed from their current trees.



Developer note: We’d like to note that the addition of the Skink to the American tree is not in place of any other unique vehicle — we have more SPAA planned for the tree and the Skink is just a bonus on top. The Skink will add more gameplay options and diversify lineups for the USA, and the Ram II has been requested for Great Britain for a while now, so this is a great opportunity for them to receive it.

  • Z-11WA — a bug that caused the rotor to sound like the tail rotor RPM when viewed from the helicopter cockpit has been fixed.

Other



  • The following changes made to nation challenge achievements have now come into effect:

    • Achievements can now only be obtained with vehicles that belong to a specific nation. Vehicles with the same name from another nation will no longer be added to achievements. For example, the achievement “Bf 109 German Ace” can only be completed with aircraft from the German aviation research tree and not with captured aircraft from the US and Japanese aviation research trees.

The history of the US Navy dates back to October 13th 1775, when the rebellious colonies first created their Continental Navy. The US Navy’s most significant growth occurred during World War II, when by the end of the war it had become the largest navy in the world.

About these ships

Task: Play 3 battles using US ships at rank III or higher to receive the “US NAVY Day 2024” decal!

Additional details:

  • Your activity must not be below 70%.
  • You can complete the task in random battles, except for Enduring Confrontation missions, [Assault] mode and Helicopter PVE battles.
  • Track your progress in the hangar by clicking Nickname → Achievements → Holidays → US Navy Day.
  • You can find the decal in the “Holidays” tab in the Customization menu.

HMS Iron Duke Is Back on the Anniversary of its Launch!



HMS Iron Duke, a dreadnought and the lead ship of the Royal Navy’s Iron Duke class of battleships, was launched at Portsmouth on October 12th, 1912. She took part in all the major operations of the Grand Fleet in the First World War, including the Battle of Jutland.

HMS Iron Duke is back for Golden Eagles and is here to stay!


HMS Iron Duke is now available again for purchase for 8,380 Golden Eagles.
