Le Malin: the malign destroyer

The French large destroyer Le Malin of the Le Fantasque class was built to chase and hunt other destroyers.

Le Malin, destroyer, French. Rank III.

Features:

  • Hard-hitting main caliber guns
  • Effective AA guns
  • Thin-skinned gun mounts
  • Huge profile

We continue to introduce you to the bluewater fleet of France, which will be added to the game with the release of the next major War Thunder update. The destroyers of the Le Fantasque class are among the most famous ships of this type in history. Meet Le Malin, “the malign one", the Le Fantasque-class destroyer with powerful main battery armament, excellent sailing performance and deadly anti-air battery!

Le Fantasque-class destroyers were originally designed as destroyer hunters that operate as part of a group of ships of the same type and fight more like light cruisers. That is why the main armament of the Le Malin besides torpedoes is very powerful artillery. The Mle 1929 138.6mm guns with half-closed 10 mm anti-fragmentation shields are placed along the ship in a linearly elevated layout. Due to their design, the gun mounts are poorly protected from enemy fire, especially from fragments and shrapnel, and have quite low traverse speed. However, the satisfying ballistics and effective semi-AP rounds make the destroyer a very dangerous enemy even for ships of heavier classes.

In our game, Le Malin will be presented in the latest configuration after the upgrade in Boston in 1943. The originally poor anti-aircraft armament, which they tried to strengthen in each of the five ship upgrades, finally turned out to be quite effective, including two twin-barreled and one quad mount of the 40mm Bofors autocannons and 10 20mm Oerlikons. During the same upgrade in Boston, the ship received two additional mortars for 100-kg depth charges, bringing their total number to four. But the torpedo armament had to be reduced, abandoning one of the three triple-tube launchers.

The Le Malin - big, fast and malign - will appear in the game in the next major War Thunder update. Get early access packs to the French Navy СBT and you can be the first to test the amazing ships of one of the most distinctive fleets in the world!

Grumman F-14B Tomcat: The Bombcat

A new top-tier US naval jet fighter that comes equipped with more powerful engines and new weapons!

F-14B Tomcat, jet fighter, USA, rank VIII

Features:

  • Better thrust and climb rate
  • Gorgeous AIM-54 Phoenix missiles
  • Guided bombs
  • TISEO (Target Identification System, Electro Optical)

Today we'll talk about the top-tier US naval fighter, which will be added to the game in the next major War Thunder update. So, meet the F-14B, a modified version of the formidable F-14A - a significantly expanded arsenal of weapons and improved rate of climb.

The upgraded version of the Tomcat received new, more high-torque engines, which give the fighter a noticeable increase in climb rate to about 225 m/s, while maintaining approximately the same speed and fuel consumption as the F-14A version. An interesting option for fans of Simulation Battles will be the TISEO optical target identification system. This system allows you to view the target acquired by the radar on the monitor in the cockpit, if the enemy aircraft is not too far away. However, the main good news for American pilots is the improved armament of the F-14B!

So, for air combat, the main specialty of the F-14, the new version is equipped with more advanced AIM-9L air-to-air missiles (up to four), a later version of the Sparrow missile AIM-7M (up to six), as well as two modifications of the magnificent Phoenix long range missiles: the AIM-54A and the new AIM-54C with an improved inertial navigation system, which improves the accuracy of the cruising to the target at medium and long distances. Both Phoenixes can also be taken into battle up to six missiles at once.

Interesting: The F-14B Tomcat is sometimes called the “Bombcat” since it was the first fighter of the series, which could be equipped first with conventional, and then with other types of aircraft bombs.

But that is not all! The F-14B can be equipped with a LANTIRN targeting pod, which turns the Tomcat into a true reaper of ground vehicles. Guided bombs of the Paveway II family, the GBU-12, GBU-16 and heavy GBU-10, with laser seekers are accurate and deadly weapons to destroy any tank on the battlefield. In addition to guided bombs, the aircraft can also be equipped with the good old Zuni rockets as well as conventional free-fall bombs in calibers up to 2,000 pounds. A nice addition will be the ability to use the already familiar Bol countermeasure pods with 160 charges each. Use the weapon configurator to setup your perfect set for each game mode! Well, and a small spoiler alert - the aircraft will also be equipped with a new to the game type of weapon, which we will present to you soon!

The ultimate US naval jet fighter is coming to the game together with the release of the next major update - it's coming soon, it's going to be exciting! Stay tuned to our Dev Diaries series to learn more!

War Thunder — Now on your Smartphone!

Large-scale military vehicular combat is now accessible right on your mobile phones globally! The Open Beta test has begun with War Thunder Mobile for Android portable devices and we invite all interested players to download the APK file from the official web site of the game.

WT Mobile Website

There are hot tank and naval battles with aviation support already in game with up to 20 players in each battle! And that is real War Thunder combat experience - without compromise!

In one battle, mobile gamers can feel both the power of a heavy tank breaching walls and trees, or the inertia of a 50,000 tonne dreadnought and the adrenaline in a quick and manoeuvrable dogfight of an interceptor pursuing an enemy bomber.

Until recently, one could not dream of having such combined battles in a mobile game. In order to destroy enemy vehicles players need to study their specifics, the placement of their key equipment modules and armament details. Quality combat physics and no “healthbars”!

Smartphone users can finally enjoy dynamic and realistic War Thunder battles in known locations with proper shell ballistics and a detailed indication of the armour penetration process, splinter trajectories and crew and equipment damage.

When working on a mobile version of the game, we carefully transferred all that makes War Thunder a unique game. At the same time, we adapted the interface, vehicle controls and progression mechanics to make the game comfortable for mobile players.

Of the thousands of military vehicles models presented in War Thunder, we selected the most interesting and famous ones for the mobile game. Altogether, at the Beta test start, you can enjoy more than 200 different armoured ground vehicles, ships and aircraft.

You can control light, medium and heavy tanks, self-propelled and anti-aircraft artillery, fighters and bombers, destroyers, cruisers and dreadnoughts. And in naval battles we have already added even submarines with their own special gameplay!

Currently, there are military vehicles from the USA, USSR, Britain, Germany, France and Japan from World War II and some early Cold War years. We will continue to add new famous vehicles up to some of the most modern ones!

A Beta-test progress wipe isn’t planned in the future. Any game currency purchased during previous alpha test will be credited to your account in Beta. Both alpha-testers and beta-testers will get special gifts when the game is released, and all participants of the alpha-testing will additionally get 3 days of Premium account!

Supported Devices
War Thunder Mobile can be played on most Android 10 and later devices with a minimum of 4 GB RAM. On the newest smartphones with Snapdragon® 8 Gen 2 from Qualcomm Technologies, we support the newly announced real-time Hardware-Accelerated Ray Tracing - a technology that will enhance overall visual quality and immersion by adding ray-traced smooth shadows with realistic penumbras, translucency, self-shadowing, and other effects ensuring great player combat immersion.

Currently the game can be installed by downloading the APK file. Release of War Thunder Mobile in Google Play, as well as in the AppStore for iOS is planned in the nearest future.

See you all in the battle — anywhere!

From May 10th until May 22nd participate in the Legend of Victory event and earn decals, decorations, and the unique BM-31-12, younger brother of the legendary Katyusha!

The BM-31-12 was designed to fire the heavy M-31 300mm unguided rockets. Guidance and launch are carried out with a welded framework of 12 rails mounted on the chassis of the Studebaker military truck. The machine was successfully tested in the spring of 1944 and was put into service in June under the designation BM-31-12. In the troops, by analogy with the Katyusha MLRS, the new vehicle was nicknamed Andryusha (“little Andrey” in Russian). It was widely used in the battles of the final stages of WWII in Europe, including the urban battles as a fire support for Soviet storming troops. In total, the Red Army received 1,807 BM-31-12 Andryusha vehicles until the end of the war.

Planned economy changes in May

Continuing the transition to an economy based on vehicle ranks

In February last year we began the transition to a rank-based economy, which was chosen by the majority of players in a vote. We remind you that this transition requires several smoothed economy updates. With the release of the current economy update, the transition to the new system will be completed for most aircraft and ground vehicles of rank III and higher.

Maximum repair cost in the table sheet for economy changes

Usually in the table sheet, economy changes indicate the minimum repair cost of vehicles without taking into account used modifications. This is the “default” repair cost of vehicles that will be shown in the vehicle card for example before research or purchase. However in the case of different number of modifications in the vehicle and accordingly different additions to the repair cost from modifications it is not quite correct to compare the minimum repair cost. For example, right now (before the economy changes), the repair cost of the T-80BVM in RB when all modifications are installed will be changed from 3690 to 7405 SL and for the Leopard 2A6 - from 5410 to 8050 SL. We see the estimated (maximum) repair cost of these vehicles differs by only 8.7% while the basic (minimum) - almost one and a half times. At the same time the change in the repair cost of vehicles must be of interest primarily to those players who own these vehicles; play them and have already researched a number of modifications or even all of them. And accordingly see and spend no longer the basic repair cost.

Beginning in this update we decided to use in the economy change tables, the maximum repair cost of the vehicle by taking into account all installed modifications.

Open the table sheet of changes

However, in this update, for the last time a table with minimum repair cost will also be presented, so that everyone can make sure that the repair cost of all vehicles hasn’t been increased several times and these are two different parameters - the minimum (basic) repair cost and the maximum (estimated) repair cost.

Open the table sheet of changes (with minimum repair cost)

Converting the repair time of vehicles in the hangar to the system of vehicle ranks

Free vehicle repairs in the hangar allows you to save a certain amount of SL on vehicle repair. That’s why initially the time of free repair has been calculated from the repair cost of the vehicle. But for some vehicles in some game modes (aircraft in SB, fleet in AB and RB) the repair cost became very high due to the peculiarities of vehicles and modes (primarily because of the large average life span) which led to a very long time of free repair.

We decided to simplify this mechanics and fixed the free repair time depending on the economy rank of the vehicle (rank and position in the research tree) by analogy with such indicators as research cost, price, crew training price, RP multiplier and some others.

As a basis for calculating the new free repair time, the average repair time rates of ground vehicles were taken.

Changes of the cost of the expendable modification "Crew Replenishment"

Repair costs are not the only expense in battle. Silver Lions will also be spent on ammo, suspended weaponry and the expendable modification "Crew Replenishment". All these expenses will be taken into account when calculating the repair cost and subtracted from the initially calculated value forming the final estimated repair cost. Moreover, the share of expenditures on consumables should be noticeably lower than the expenditures on repairs. However in the case of the “Crew Replenishment” modification this rule isn’t followed - the modification is too expensive for rank I vehicles but too cheap for rank V and higher and we will fix it in this economy update.

Now the cost of the "Crew Replenishment" will be linked not to vehicle rank but to the economy rank(rank and position in the research tree on the rank) which will allow to fine-tune the price of the modification for all vehicles. For reserve vehicles the price will drop from 100 to 10 SL, for other rank I vehicles it will drop from 100 to 40-70 SL, for rank VII vehicles it will increase from 700 to 1000-1100 SL. Once again, please note that an increase in the cost of an expendable modification does not mean an overall increase in costs, as it is taken into account when calculating the price of a vehicle repair.

Changes in the research and purchase cost of squadron vehicles

There will be changes to the research and purchase costs for a number of squadron vehicles.

BF2C-1 Goshawk: new reserve aircraft of the USA

New reserve aircraft comes to the US tech tree in the upcoming War Thunder update. Meet first photos and details!

BF2C-1, fighter, USA., rank I. Reserve aircraft.

Features:

  • Good turn rate
  • 4x100 lb bombs
  • Poor offensive armament

The BF2C-1 carrier-based fighter project was proposed by Curtiss to equip the new American aircraft carriers, which began to enter service with the US Navy in the early 1930s. Curtiss modified its Curtiss F11C Goshawk fighter, equipping the aircraft with a retractable landing gear and reinforced metal wings. Despite the good speed performance, the aircraft became less maneuverable due to the heavier weight. Nevertheless, the naval command placed an order for a small batch of fighter-bomber modifications, designated BF2C-1 Goshawk. During trial service with the VB-5 squadron on the USS Ranger aircraft carrier, the fighter reveals serious issues with the landing gear, due to which it was soon decommissioned from service.

Until recently, the US carrier-based aviation reserve aircraft was the P-26 Peashooter, an all-metal monoplane that was noticeably inferior to reserve biplanes of other nations in terms of maneuverability. With the release of the next major War Thunder update, the new reserve of the US tech tree will be the Curtiss BF2C-1 Goshawk biplane. Let's take a closer look at it, shall we?

The new BF2C-1 is one of the most advanced biplane generations in the history of warfare, combining the signature biplane maneuverability with a good speed performance, which can even be even higher than some early monoplanes. A special feature of the BF2C-1 is the ability to install four 100 lb bombs with a separate drop, which makes the new reserve a great choice for the low rank mixed battles.

Like many other reserve biplanes, the BF2C-1 lacks firepower. A pair of rifle-caliber machine guns is usually not enough to instantly shoot down an enemy fighter with a short burst, while heavier aircraft will most probably require several attacks. However, the huge ammunition load of machine guns and good cooling of the barrels make it possible to pray-and-spray, while sticking on the enemy's six o’clock.

You will be able to test the new American navy reserve aircraft in battle, or even start studying the excellent lineup of the US aviation with the new BF2C-1 in the upcoming major War Thunder update. More news in our Developers Diary series - stay tuned!

BM-31-12: Katyusha’s Little Brother

Soviet multiple-rocket launch system BM-31-12 will become the main prize of the upcoming Victory Day event in War Thunder.

BM-31-12, MLRS, USSR, rank III. Premium.

Features:

  • Deadly heavy rockets
  • Lacks direct fire
  • Light protection

Unguided 300-mm M-30 rockets were used by the Red Army since 1942 as a field artillery, being fired from metal frames right in the transporting containers. Soon, an upgraded version of the rocket appeared under the designation M-31 with an improved engine and a significantly increased range. Engineers from the special design bureau of the Moscow Kompressor plant designed a combat vehicle on the chassis of the US-built Studebaker US6 three-axle truck with a framework of 12 welded rails to launch these powerful rockets. The machine was successfully tested in the spring of 1944 and was put into service in June under the designation BM-31-12. In the troops, by analogy with the Katyusha MLRS, the new vehicle was nicknamed Andryusha (“little Andrey” in Russian). Rocket launchers Andryusha were widely used in the battles of the final stages of WWII in Europe, including the urban battles as a fire support for Soviet storming troops. In total, the Red Army received 1,807 BM-31-12 Andryusha vehicles until the end of the war.

We are pleased to present to you the main prize of the upcoming special event, a collectable BM-31-12 Andryusha multiple launch rocket system, the younger brother of the legendary Katyusha.

The BM-31-12 was designed to fire the heavy M-31 300mm unguided rockets. Guidance and launch are carried out with a welded framework of 12 rails mounted on the chassis of the Studebaker military truck. Even with a full load of rockets, the vehicle moves very fast on paved roads and hard ground, which allows the commander to quickly change positions and reload. The crew of the BM-31-12 is only two people in the cabin, covered with very thin armor, so the BM-31-12 can’t survive any fire including machine-guns.

Like the Katyusha, the BM-31-12’s launcher is unable to fire directly, so commanders have to be smart in finding the right position to hit close targets: place the vehicle on hillsides, in gullies and pits, it is also recommended to learn suspension control. Shooting from BM-31-12 is also difficult because of the spread of the rockets and limited ammunition load... but what a pleasure it is to hit targets! Light vehicles and even medium tanks can be destroyed by close hits, heavy tanks and self-propelled guns will require a direct hit to kill. In any case, you are advised to shoot multiple rockets, so the chances of hitting are much higher.

Master this challenging, but very interesting machine: come up with new tactics, invent custom sights, make tables of fire in different locations according to enemy congestion areas and camper sites. In a couple of days, we will publish the full list of prizes and tasks of the upcoming event, in which you can get the rocket Andryusha to your hangar! Follow the news!
