Performance update - public beta

Warlords Under Siege is currently going some serious changes under the hood, and although gameplay didn't change, we released a public beta. This is a very WIP version, but we'd love to hear if you notice any performance improvements and or bugs. You can access the beta through Steam, by right clicking on the game, going to properties, and basically following the screenshot below...

Previously we found that structural changes affected some users very badly - this is mostly due to Unity engine updates and architecture changes. We're not able to test all configurations, as we only have a few personal machines we can test on. Any community feedback would be greatly appreciated.

We're looking for comments on:

  • Any and all bugs
  • Performance (better, worse, not noticeable?)

Anything else too of course, but the above are most important.

Please bear in mind this is a very WiP release. There may be other noticeable bugs. Nonetheless it's super important we get as many people report their findings as possible ːhealthː It would also be quite cool to know what sort of updates you'd like to see in the future. Unfortunately we receive very little feedback from the community, and having worked on this for over a year, we're often blind to many of the faults.

We've ventured far beyond our initial roadmap, but the journey doesn't end here. We're eager to continue expanding this world, but we need to know what you, our amazing community, want to explore next.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone for your invaluable help and enthusiastic participation. Together, we're making Warlords Under Siege not just a game, but a legend - or at least I bloody hope so, because my MOT is coming up and I expect my old Kia Ceed to require some major repairs ːgoldensmileː

  • Units should pick better paths for navigation and get stuck less often
  • Improved pathfinding performance
  • Improved performance bottlenekcs related to scattered map objects

0.9d - Minor Patch

0.9d

Hi everyone! We have a small update coming your way. It includes some fixes that are especially important to late game, as well as two last maps: Oasis of the Lost and Hills of Sorrow. We found that there was a bug with caravans which gave waaaayy too much gold that prompted the last change regarding cost of final town hall upgrades. We revised the costs, and fixed the bug.

You'll see more enemies on Oasis of the Lost as well, as it was way too easy than originally intended.

You'll also see some minor changes to Demolishers, as they were a little bit too powerful. Now they'll be more on par with other T3 units.

Paladins will no longer heal buildings as well, and Serpent Priest is no longer so underwhelming!

  • In Chaos mode, chaos card units now give fate points, contributing to faster card acquisition
  • In Chaos mode votes, with Twitch enabled, first card is no longer ignored
  • Fixed various missing or incorrect translations
  • Fixed rock troll attack sound not playing properly
  • Status Effect abilities (such as Hypnoparalisys) no longer affect buildings and caravans
  • Reduced rewards from Caravans in Oasis
  • Area heal effects, like Water Blessing or Warden’s Blessing will no longer heal buildings
  • Rebalanced permanent town hall upgrades costs
  • Rebalanced caravans on Hills of Sorrow
  • Slightly increased amount of enemies spawning in Oasis of the Lost
  • Demolisher changes:

    • Iron cost from 125 to 180
    • Health from 1000 to 800
    • Damage from 30 to 25

0.9c - Fates of Chaos update

Fates of Chaos update brings with it a new game mode called Chaos. Experience a tide-turning card once per minute! It's designed to be fun, chaotic, and definitely not balanced!

Additionally if you're a Twitch streamer, you can now connect your account to the game in the Options panel. Your viewers can then vote on chaos cards that drop, and can display their names above friendly and enemy units by using !join def or !join attack commands in chat!

Changelog

  • Added CHAOS MODE, use at your own risk! Best played with endless mode :)
  • Added Twitch mode. Viewers will have their name displayed above units when typing '!join attack' or '!join def'. Can also '!vote' on chaos mode options. Enabled from Options (top right corner)
  • Enemy missile units will now prioritise targeting units on walls, instead of the walls themselves
  • Missile units will no longer ignore the order to mount a wall if already shooting at an enemy
  • Giant is now correctly affected by nightmare modes
  • Building weapon damage is now displayed correctly when boosted by modifiers, such as statues
  • Reduced Inspiring Statues Iron cost from 1000 to 500
  • Improved building UI and added some cushty sounds
  • Various UI panels are now animated
  • Units will no longer mindlessly prioritize attacking the nearest enemy when ordered to move somewhere
  • Building Weapons now display their bonuses from modifiers (such as statues) correctly
  • When multiple units are selected, holding ctrl and clicking on unit order buttons (stop, defend/attack, return to barracks) will affect all selected units
  • Significantly increased prices of repeatable Town Hall upgrades

Fates of Chaos: Embrace the Unpredictable

Hello fellow adventurers,

We're delighted to announce a brand new update to Warlords Under SiegeFates of Chaos! Brace yourself for a whole new level of unpredictibility, as we introduce two unique game modes: the "Chaos" mode and the "Twitch" mode.

Chaos Mode

In the new Chaos mode, chaos isn't just a part of the game; it is the game. Once per minute, a card is drawn from an eclectic pool of events, leading to a range of spontaneous outcomes. Expect an onslaught of enemy spawns, boss appearances, the obliteration of your beloved buildings, the disappearance of precious resources, buffs to your enemies, debuffs to your units and so much more!

However, do not expect balance. This mode is not designed to be predictable or balanced. Instead, we wanted to create an experience that's purely fun, adrenaline-pumping and constantly challenging. After all, what's adventure without a little chaos?

Our playtesting has shown a variety of reactions from the player base, ranging from a state of blessed euphoria to a PC being thrown out of a window. We're very happy with the results.

You can enable Chaos Mode in the mission selection screen. It's that little head thing. Do note it can be played with in any configuration - it's not a separate game mode. It's an addition to your mission, so it can be enabled at any nightmare level, or endless mode.

Twitch Mode

We've had some content creators enquire about potential integration with Twitch, so we came up with an idea for a way for you to engage with your audience like never before. When this mode is activated, instead of one, three event cards will be drawn. Now, your viewers have the power to shape the fate of your game. They have 30 seconds to vote for the card of their choice using the command 'Vote X'. It's a perfect way to immerse your audience in your journey and turn your gameplay into an interactive spectacle!

You can enable Twitch integration in the options.

Additionally, any viewer can join the battle! By typing a command in chat "!join attack" or "!join def", the viewer's name will appear above a randomly selected unit.

Whether you're a thrill-seeker craving unpredictability with Chaos mode, or a streamer looking to elevate your audience engagement with Twitch mode, we believe the Fates of Chaos update will bring a fresh, exciting twist to your gaming experience.

That's all for now!

We can't wait for you to embrace Chaos! As always, we'd love to hear your feedback, suggestions and see how you conquer chaos in your gameplay. We aim to release Chaos mode in the next week or so. If you have any favourite Twitch streamers, make sure to share this news with them too!

So, are you ready to brave the unpredictable tides of Chaos? Embrace them, adventurer!

- Yours forever and truly, Komisarek ː8bitheartː

Wrath of Sands

As we stand on the precipice of an exciting new chapter in the saga of Warlords Under Siege, we are thrilled to announce our biggest, latest and last major content update before our full game release - the "Wrath of Sands". Brace yourselves for an onslaught of new challenges and heated encounters in this thrilling update that will redefine your perception of danger and strategy.

New maps

Two new maps, Oasis of the Lost and Hill of Sorrow along with a new enemy race, Desert Fiends, will certainly force you to rethink your strategy. WuS, as fun as it was, didn't really force you to make any changes to your decks as you played on different maps, but this era might be coming to an end...

Take a peak - do you see something strange or unusual?

Oasis of the Lost only contains a single resource field - the Lumberyard. Other resources will arrive on caravans which you have to protect. Saying that, we are also adding in a new building - a Marketplace, in which you can trade resources and increase the effectiveness of the arriving caravans.

Hill of Sorrow layout can be seen below:

Even though this one might seem a bit easier (you've got the resources after all!), nothing could be further from the truth. Scarabs can burrow deep underground and so cannot be targeted in that stance, whereas Harpies can fly high above your walls, and cannot be targeted by melee units and catapults.

Of course there are new achievements to go with the maps as well, so make sure to get those!

New enemies

I don't want to spoil them all here, but with the update comes a brand new enemy race (as mentioned above). Their unique abilities will create new opportunities for strategy and deck building - or at least we hope they do!

Just like these guys here for example!

Merlin - a new Hero!

On top of the new maps and enemies, you're also getting a new hero with a bunch of unique skills! Merlin is a Wizard who can be built as an auto-damage dealer, or a summoner. His attack skills fire off automatically at nearby enemies and can cause serious damage.

Little makeover

All building cards have now been given their own, unique graphics. It makes for a much better visual experience. Would you agree?

Lots of little things

In general we've added a lot of little important bits, and improved other just as if not even more important bits that needed improving before! You can find the main changelog below:

Major changes:

  • Two new maps
  • New enemy race, Denizens of the Desert
  • New unit types: Flying and Burrowers
  • Merlin, a new hero, along with a set of related cards
  • New building, Marketplace
  • New weather type, Sandstorm
  • Some actions are no longer instant (such as recruiting units)
  • Buildings, once destroyed, now have a cooldown before another can be placed
  • All building cards now have their own, unique image
  • New achievements

Bugfixes and improvements:

  • Increased range of lootbag pickups
  • When a unit dies, or is resurrected, it will keep its visual aura effects
  • Current weather bonuses and penalties are now removed correctly when new Weather appears
  • Improved unit pathfinding
  • Significant optimisation improvements
  • Various Unit control improvements
  • Fate card button no longer blocks + and - buttons
  • Better visuals for damage numbers
  • Lots of many minor annoying things that would be too long to list! :)

Price increase

We're very happy with WuS as it currently is, and so will be submitting a price increase at the end of Steam Summer Sale. This was always planned and we communicated it a few times, that as the game will grow, the price will increase too. You can grab WuS now at 15% off. Once the sale ends, the new price will be $9.99.

Road to 1.0

Although most of the content is now done, we are still going to be working on bugfixes, improvements, QoL features and most importantly the promised map editor. This will bring us nicely to 1.0, sometime this year. Along with the map editor will come two unofficial maps, that the community will be able to use as templates for their own creations. I plan on creating some interesting new modes, such as a tower defence mode, with a single path the enemies take towards the goal.

That's when the fun will begin!

The update lands sometime today, when I get through all the necessary bureaucracy and final checks :)

All best and keep on fighting, Warlords!

Forever Yours,
Ziggy ːWH3_claspː
