Maps preview : Dark Stream & Rock
Hello commander,
How you rockin’ with WARNO’s latest milestone SUCHET? A ton of new toys to play with, many updates, and two new divisions, the French 11e Division Parachutiste and British 2nd Infantry Division. Let us know what you think!
Development for WARNO continues at pace. Two new maps are in the works, and today’s DevBlog takes a closer look at both: Rock and Dark Stream.
Between a Rock and a hard place
Rock is our new 83km² map, playable in 3vs3 by default, and features many plateaux bringing a distinctive verticality to this battlefield. A river runs along the length of this map. This waterway serves to channel a number of choke points in the area. Each player’s army will be able to cover the whole battlefield lengthwise without having to cross the river. However, to control Rock is to control the bridges - much like real-life - which makes these infrastructure elements important (but not the main gameplay element).
We also took care to place the command zones carefully on the map. For instance, we avoided generating too many “marked” corridors. The current layout on Rock necessitates a commander to move their forces on various axes, not only on a single straight line. We also left part of the level with no command zones. To control these sectors will be the player’s choice; our aim is to let the commander’s tactical creativity run free as they try to win the battlefield. Be sure to make good use of recon units - it might mean the difference between victory or defeat.
A Dark Stream meanders
Our second new map is Dark Stream, aimed at 4vs4 games. It is specifically designed for units with amphibious capabilities. A 72km² map, one of the main features is the huge river that winds across the entire battlefield. The location of the command zones on Dark Stream is deliberate; most of them include river or estuary zones. Make good use of amphibious units if you want to control these sectors. The remaining terrain of the map alternates between defensive positions and open areas.
We are very much looking forward to hearing what you think. Dark Stream features a new type of gameplay with a new type of amphibious unit functionality. We will adapt future maps, currently in production, based on your feedback!
More good stuff
The Eugen team is also busy testing and polishing up some other new features currently in the works:
Laser-Guided Bombs (LGB). We are reworking Laser-Guided Bomb mechanics. This will apply to both existing LGB-equipped planes (F-111F, Mirage F1-CT, etc.) and new load-outs, which will be introduced with the milestone (F-16C, and MiG-27K).
Amphibious units. The new functionality to cross water for some units is working, but we want to make sure the new feature is optimized in all aspects (visual, sound) and that it doesn’t affect the game’s performance.
HMG teams. The new type of unit, the Heavy Machine Gun team, works well. They are still being tested and balanced as we speak, however. In this developmental process, we are reconsidering all machine guns as a whole (infantry, vehicles, helicopter, etc.). Some weapons feature too disparate settings, having been worked on at different times in WARNO’s development. Now, while we are at it, we are balancing all.
See you on the battlefield
That’s it for this week. Let us know what you think. Can’t wait to hear your feedback on SUCHET.

The 11ème Division Parachutiste
Hello commander,
It’s good to be back. Last week, we talked about the new British 2nd Infantry Division, coming as part of the next major WARNO milestone, SUCHET. Let’s cast our wandering eyes today on the second promised division: the French 11e Division Parachutiste.
Keep reading to find out more!
Forewords
First, some update about SUCHET ... We had planned to release this milestone at the same time as this DevBlog, but we found a last minute issue in the version which we rather fix before delivering. Therefore, it won't be released today ... and since you should be aware by now that we don't release anything on a Friday, it will be delayed to next week. In the meantime, you can watch members of the Strike Team streaming previews of the divisions & patch.
Now, let's focus back on our new French division ...
A little bit of history
The 11e Division Parachutiste has a complicated ancestry, with the formation created in 1971 by converting the 11e Division Légère d’Intervention (the 11th Fast Reaction Division). This original division had only been activated ten years prior by merging the remaining elements of two parachutist divisions which rebelled against the governement in the Algiers Coup of 1961.
Unlike other French divisions, the 11e Division Parachutiste was a “true” division in size. As a matter of fact, it has been created from no less than seven airborne infantry regiments. It formed half of France’s Force Terrestre d’Intervention in the 70s and 80s, gaining valuable combat experience in Chad, Zaïre, and Lebanon.
One special feature of this division was that these paratrooper regiments originated from three different arms: two regiments were “Metro” (which stands for metropolitan France), three regiments “Marine” ("naval infantry", a rebranding of the former “Colonial” infantry) and the last remaining regiment “Foreign”, meaning from Légion Etrangère or the famous French Foreign Legion.
That leaves one more regiment: the 1er RPIMA. A special forces regiment, it held the traditions of the original naval commandos trained by the British during World War II. They have kept the SAS motto “Qui ose gagne” (“Who dares win”) and are still, to this day, referred to as the French SAS.
The 11e Division Parachutiste detailed
The 11e Division Parachutiste had its organic helicopter support removed in 1984, to be given to the new 4e Division Aéromobile. After this date, the division worked closely with its new cousin formation. This is reflected in-game with the 4e Division Aéromobile providing their arsenal of rotorcraft to the French paratroopers.
Much like the 82nd Airborne, the 11e Division Parachutiste has its very own “Humvee-like” light truck, found up and down through its ranks. This is the VLRA (Véhicule Léger de Reconnaissance et d’Appui) and available in a wide range of configurations: transport, recon, logistics, AA, AT, self-propelled mortar, and so forth. And like the Humvee, the VLRA will have more HP than jeeps but less than standard trucks.
What to expect in-game
What will the 11e Division Parachutiste be like in WARNO, category by category?
LOG - Not the division’s strong suit, with only light CV units available: P4 PC jeeps, VBL PC and Puma PC helicopters. Supply units are meager, either in the form of the lightweight VLRA Log or the fragile Puma Kangourou.
INF - A strong category, with lots of veteran Chasseurs Paras and elite Légionnaires Paras (organized and equipped respectively like Gren. Volt and Grent. Volt. (Apilas). Furthermore, you get Sapeurs Paras (this time fielding modern small arms), Groupe Antichar Paras, Milan 1 and Milan 2 (both Paras version). All of these units will feature the Forward Deployment trait, but can only count on VLRA and P4 as transport options.
Continuing with INF - Reservistes are also available, since only half the airborne regiments were professionalized. This type of infantry tended to be sent in the second wave; they do not feature Forward Deployment. Additionally, some Aeromobiles, detached from 4e Division Aéromobile, operate with Super Puma transports. They also lack the Forward Deployment mechanic.
TANK - The division can field P4 Milan Paras (Forward Deployment), the VLRA Milan (more missiles, but lacking Forward Deployment) and France’s sexiest vehicle, the ERC-90 Sagaie, acting as a sneaky, swelty light-wheeled tank.
ART - Artillery forces are light and quickly turn expensive. The 11e Division Parachutiste can count on towed 120mm mortars, VLRA PMB (self-propelled 81mm mortars on trucks) and HM2A1 105mm light field guns.
RECON - As with our other French division, the recon category is solid, with plenty of cheap slots. You’ll gain access to VBL Reco and VBL Milan, as well as 4-man Eclaireurs Paras with LRAC or elite 8-man Eclaireurs SAS with SIG-543, two Minimi SAW and Satchel charges. Also featured are AML-60-12 with a combo of direct-fire 60mm and 12,7mm HMG, but only Good optics, and a AML-90 Lynx with improved optics and its armament replaced with a low-velocity 90mm tank gun. Recon Gazelle Lisse (unarmed) and Gazelle Canon (20mm) are also available.
AA - Although plentiful choices in this category, AA relies on just two system families: the 53T2 20mm gun or the Mistral missile. Aside from the basic version of both, you’ll also encounter a self-propelled variant on a VLRA for each system, as well as a Gazelle Celtic armed with four Mistral missiles.
HEL - plentiful and cheap, with the armed units available being all French, even if they are relatively light. The Gazelle can be deployed in 20mm, HOT and HOT 2 versions. The greatly named Puma Pirate, with a side-door 20mm, can also be fielded.
AIR - The Armée de l’Air provides a special effort, with the Jaguar coming in many configurations: from SEAD, ATGM, HE to a full Rocket, Napalm (featuring Bidons Spéciaux), a second SEAD variant with the Gulf War-era ARMAT anti-radiation missiles plus rockets, and a Cluster version. Fighters include a returning Mirage 2000C RDI, Mirage F1C-200 and F1 CT variant able to fire the LGB. Finally, the Mirage 5 F “bomb truck” completes this air show.
The 11e Division Parachutiste relies on hard-hitting airborne & airmobile infantry, including plenty with the Forward Deployment option, as well as good recon forces. The formation is backed by strong air assets, either armed helicopters or planes, providing critical close air support. However, since the rest of the division’s arsenal is pretty light, the 11e Division Parachutiste is better suited for sneak attacks, flanking maneuvers and light strike missions.
SUCHET release & patch
SUCHET will be delivered with an accompanying major patch. We have tried to address issues reported by the community, as well as adding some new features, such as:
infantry weapon teams (ATGM, RCL & MANPAD) being able to occupy city blocks. This change is paving the way for the upcoming introduction of HMG teams.
some helicopters now have an ECM value, giving them more chance to dodge missiles. Those models so equipped are now launching flares FX when targeted, same as planes.
new infantry cards for a abetter readibility.
improved FX.
and more ...
Now that all planned divisions are done, we have also started giving overall balance a closer look. And in that matter, some divisions really needed some love ... or the stick. The main targets were the two existing airborne divisions, 82nd Airborne & 35-ya GvDShB. The former being too good, the latter widely regarded as the weakest ingame. We have brough some changes to bring both more on par with the others divisions. Warsaw Pact in general, and DDR in particular, also needed some buffs. We will keep a close look on balance once this patch has taken effect, and we will bring more changes if need be, tone down some of the recent ones if they went too far.
We hope you will enjoy this.
See you on the battlefield
Plenty to read, and plenty to discuss. Let us know what you think of SUCHET’s two new divisions. We’ll be back with another blog post next week!
As teased in last week’s blog post about the upcoming SUCHET milestone, two new divisions will make their way to WARNO.
The first one we detail today. Let’s welcome to the stage the British 2nd Infantry Division!
The Brits return
All right, at ease chaps. The mighty tank fist of the British 1st Armored Division is already in the game. Now it is time for their comrade-in-arms of the 2nd Infantry Division to join them on the battlefield.
The formation’s history dates back to the Napoleonic wars, and the 2nd Infantry Division even has the claim to fame of having fought at Waterloo in 1815. After many battles, ranging from the Second Boer War to World War I and World War II, where the division saw action in Burma against Japanese forces, the 2nd Infantry Division found itself on occupational duties in northwest Germany.
Once again, the formation underwent many rounds of restructuring, going from the 2nd Armoured Division to the 2nd Infantry Division in the early 1980s. The division was also assigned to the British Army on the Rhine (aka BAOR), the permanent Royal Army’s presence in West Germany. However, instead of being based in NORTHAG itself, the soldiers of the division found themselves in England, lightly equipped so that in case of war, they could deploy quickly overseas to reinforce I. British Corps.
The 2nd Infantry Division had a table of organization and equipment that, in true British fashion, did not resemble the official TO&E at all. For instance, the formation had one regular infantry brigade backed up by two territorial (reservist) brigades and even one engineer brigade.
The 2nd Infantry Division in detail
After a major overhaul in the early 80s, the 2nd Infantry Division had its sole regular infantry brigade converted to an airmobile one. What this means in WARNO is that the 2nd Infantry Division will field no regular Rifles infantry of its own, but either Airmobile troops or Terrier (Territorial reservist) infantry. The engineer forces, in turn, will come as Terrier Engineers.
Terrier squads are organized along the same line as their Royal Army counterparts, but the reservists haven’t transitioned yet to the L85/L86 family of assault rifles. Instead, these troops retain the old L1A1 SLR battle rifles, L7A2 (and sometimes even old L4A4 Bren) machine guns and Carl Gustav recoilless rifles. These territorial units are veterancy-locked to level 1.
Looking at the rest of the arsenal of the 2nd Infantry Division, in terms of equipment, it is rather light. No FV432, Warrior IFVs, or even an organic tank detachment. The sole armored vehicles are Ferret, FV721 Fox and Saxon wheeled APCs.
However, it could count on some armored support from the 3rd Armored Division, I British Corps' reserve formation, which would detach brigades or even regiments in times of war. In historical precedence, during NATO exercise Lionheart in 1984, the 2nd Infantry Division also received the Heimatschutzbrigade 53, a German reserve armored unit, to bolster its forces. With a full-blown Warsaw Pact invasion, as depicted in WARNO, it is safe to assume this will happen again.
So, while being very light, the 2nd Infantry Division is also very mobile. Terriers can only deploy in trucks, but almost a quarter of the infantry will be Airmobile troops, deployable in either a fast Saxon APC or Lynx helicopter. Additionally, the formation has a ton of Territorial anti-aircraft units, resulting - without a doubt - in NATO’s division in West Germany with the most anti-air defenses systems!
What to expect in-game
Let’s look at the 2nd Infantry Division, category by category.
LOG - Includes the same Rover CP, and Bedford and Chinook supply vehicles as the 1st Armoured Division. On top of this, you can also deploy a Gazelle CP command helicopter, as well as a M577 armored CV, courtesy of the attached West Germans.
INF - A very generous category, with a wide selection of Airmobile units (vanilla, command and support versions) deployable in Saxon APCs and Lynx helicopters. Next up are Terriers squads, which once more are featured in general, command, anti-tank, and support variants, as well as Engineers squads, which are mostly Territorials but also come as command and regular variants. These squads can be brought to the battlefield either in a Bedford truck or Rover jeep.
Continuing with the INF category. West German Jäger squads (regular and command), coming in Unimog trucks or M113A1G APCs, can be fielded. And, thanks to the 3rd Armored Division, there is a single card of Arm. Rifles in a Warrior IFV. Support squads include Wombat RCL, Milan 1 (Territorials, so only in Rover jeeps) and Milan 2 ATGM squads (Airmobile, so in a Lynx or Saxon). The West Germans furthermore provide Heimatschützen militia, while RMP military police keep an eye on the rabble. Cherry on the cake are SAS commandos, in a combat role, with their (now WRD classic) loadout of AT-4 and Stinger missiles.
ART - The artillery forces present are light in numbers, with the 81mm Mortar, the towed L118 105mm and L121 155mm howitzers, as well as a few self-propelled M107A2 175mm lend from I British Corps. The Bundeswehr provides some additional Tampella 120mm heavy mortars.
TANKS - An average number of slots that rapidly rise in cost. With no organic tank formation, the 2nd Infantry Division gets its tanks from two other sources. A few Challengers come courtesy of the 3rd Armored Division, while the Germans provide the more numerous M48A2GA2. Other vehicles include German Iltis Milan and British Rover Milan 2.
RECO - Not the divisions’ best category with infantry Scouts, and only Ferret and FV721 Fox recon vehicles. Jäger Auflk. in Aufkl. M113A1G can also be deployed.
AA - One of the 2nd Infantry Division’s most formidable categories with lots of cheap options and slots. You get Blowpipe, Javelin, Javelin LML and Tracker Rapier units, as well as towed Rapier AA systems.
HEL - More and cheaper slots compared to the 1st Armoured Division, thanks to its airmobile brigade, but with the same units deployable: Gazelle Ah. 1 RKT and two variants of the Lynx HELARM.
AIR - An average category, with several new loadouts for Harrier and Jaguar planes, and including the Phantom F.3 fighter.
The 2nd Infantry Division is light and mobile and not meant to engage the opponent in head-on encounters. Rather, its airmobile component allows for fast strike missions and rapid movement. The few heavy tanks provide an anchor for varied infantry and light tank forces to outmaneuver slower enemies. Add on top the heliborne and AA defenses, and the 2nd Infantry Division is an agile and versatile formation, flexible on the battlefield.
See you on the battlefield
That’s it for this week. Check back in with next week’s DevBlog, where we will shine the light on the second (French) division being brought to you by SUCHET.
With the recent drop of our latest milestone, BESSIERES, the time has come to look at the new major update making its way to WARNO: SUCHET.
The SUCHET update is currently the last planned milestone that will bring divisions to the game. But next to two new divisions, there are also planning a host of improvements, new features, updates, and other changes. Some might be released before, with, or after the SUCHET update!
Let us lift a tip of the veil.
First things first
Before we continue, a quick introduction on the name of the milestone, SUCHET. Each major WARNO update is named after a French marshal active during the Napoleonic wars. Louis-Gabriel Suchet was noticeable for gaining his marshal bâton in Spain, that place where other French generals and commanders went, and left their reputation in disgrace behind.
Like the other marshals before him, Suchet rapidly rose in the ranks thanks to his military abilities. Though after initial gains, he found himself stuck in a dead-end assignment with little hope of advancement when he encountered Napoleon by chance in Venice. The young lieutenant colonel was surprisingly promoted on the spot. After continued service in Italy, he achieved his reputation during the battles of 1805 and 1806 before being ordered to Spain.
There, Suchet invented the concept of modern counter-insurgency, understanding that to triumph over the guerilla, you need to win the hearts and minds of the local population. He was named marshal after the Siege of Tarragona before ultimately being forced out of Spain in 1814.
Louis-Gabriel Suchet was, with Lannes, Davout, and Gouvion Saint-Cyr, one of the few marshals whom Napoléon could leave to operate on their own. He died of natural causes in 1826.
What can you expect from SUCHET
Of course, you are clamoring to know more about the two new divisions brought to you by SUCHET, but right now, we will keep it to a tease. Two new divisions, with one being French and the other British. More news to follow next week!
What else?
We can talk about some other elements and features coming around or with the next milestone. Some might drop beforehand. For instance:
Multiplayer
HMG (Heavy Machine Gun) teams will be introduced as infantry support units. These HMG teams will be featured on tripods, the same as recoilless rifles currently in-game. Some systems include the 7,62mm M60 and the 12,7mm NSV, but we will also extend it to automatic grenade launchers, including the AGS-17 and Mk.19. These new units will be added to all divisions.
Amphibious capacity will be added to those vehicles equipped to do so. Better keep an eye out on those rivers. Who knows where the next attack will come from?
Destruction mode. Hurrah! The often-requested Destruction mode makes its glorious return, being high on our priority list. The map team is hard at work converting the existing maps to this game mode.
FOB. And yes, FOBs (Forward Operating Bases) will make their return as a new feature as well.
ECM on helicopters. Some of the more modern helicopters in-game will be equipped with ECM systems. Though not as advanced as those found on planes, some rotorcraft will have flares installed. Flying machines that will feature the upgrade include the Ka-50, Mi-24VP and AH-64 Apache.
There is even more
Next to SUCHET we are also working on some interesting single-player (or, as we call it, solo) features to be released later down the line. Such as?
Solo
The long-awaited Army General strategic turn-based campaign mode is coming along well! All the required units are modeled and placed, with the Order of Battle (OOB) completed, the formations (battalions) crafted, and the huge maps covering two-thirds of the CENTAG area and Inner German Border being built as we speak. More details to come!
We are also advancing well with the tutorials, which will teach all the important aspects of the game, from Orders to ATGM combat and Counter-Battery Artillery, in short, scripted scenarios.
What’s more, we are also working on Challenges (Steel Division 2 veterans know these as “Historical Battles”). These will be single skirmish battles, with fixed starting battlegroups, special objectives, and scripts.
Other improvements Sometimes it’s not about adding something new, but fixing or improving what already is in place. With SUCHET, we’ll try to address some of the following issues as well:
improving LGB’s representation
improving SEAD’s effectiveness
more improving generally planes’ behaviour, especially autostrike
improving UI’s readibility
... and more
Furthermore, we’re always on the hunt to improve the user interface of WARNO and to make the game easier to understand and play. For instance, many hints are missing or being rewritten as we speak, while we are reworking the infantry cards to make each squad’s role more intuitive to comprehend.
See you on the battlefield
All right, that’s all. Tune in next week as we will look at the first new SUCHET division.

British and French forces are now available !
Hello commander!
As we talked about in last week’s post, we are hard at work on the next major milestone for WARNO: BESSIERES.
A little surprise, but the update is already out today! We didn’t have the time (yet) to talk about that other division to ship with this WARNO update. We will take the opportunity to do so now!
First of all: BESSIERES will launch with two new maps: Riftrevealed last week and the 10vs10 Crown. But let's start with the juicy details first: make way for the Brits and their heavy-hitting 1st Armoured Division!
A little history
If one digs deep, the 1st Armoured Division has a pedigree that extends back to pre-World War II, starting life as the Mobile Division. However, this formation was renamed, reformed, and reconstituted countless times. The original formation served with distinction, from the Battle of France in 1940 to El Alamein in 1942, before being deployed to Italy and fight until 1945. Before the war was over, the division’s forces were scattered before being officially disbanded.
The 1st Armoured Division gained a second lease on life in the 1960s when it was formed as part of the British Army of the Rhine. The formation belonged to the NORTHAG area of responsibility, I British Corps, located somewhat to the north of the CENTAG sector of Western Germany. Much like other NATO forces permanently stationed in West Germany, 1st Armoured Division was a frontline division. A clear objective was to form behind a screen of friendly troops and repulse any Warsaw Pact advance into West Germany.
The late Cold War 1st Armoured Division was a strong tank division, with three armored brigades and no infantry brigade. Besides, two of its armored brigades were “heavy brigades” (two armored regiments each, with only one infantry regiment), and both had been converted to Challenger tanks by 1989. The last brigade was “light” (one tank regiment for two infantry regiments) and kept the older Chieftain main battle tanks. That’s a serious dose of heavy tank firepower!
What to expect in-game
So, what can you expect of the 1st Armoured Division in-game? Let’s look at the new division, category by category.
LOG - A standard category with Rover CP command jeep, FV432 Command and FV105 Sultan tracked CVs. Supply units are Bedford trucks and Chinook HC.1 helicopters.
INF - Once again, nothing too fancy for an armored division. Infantry include 8-man Rifles squads with L85A1 assault rifles, L86A1 SAW and LAW-80 rocket launchers, deployable in FV432 APCs. Also available are 7-man Arm. Rifles squads with the same small arms but carrying an M72 LAW and being brought to the battlefield courtesy of a Warrior IFV. Other infantry units are Assault Pioniers, with either a Carl Gustav or explosives (coming in a FV432 APC), as well as a 4-man Gun Group squad with two MAG medium machine guns (APC or IFV).
INF - Continuing with infantry. A player can also field MILAN 1 and 2 ATGM teams with their own Spartan MCT transport - which is a fast and small APC sporting twin MILAN launchers. Buy one, get one free! Lastly, we also have a squad of Redcaps, or RMP (Royal Military Police), which is a 4-man patrol with Sterling SMGs, L1A1 SLR and MAG machine gun.
ART - The United Kingdom is the only NATO nation not to field a heavy mortar. That’s why the 1st Armoured Division is restricted to 81mm systems, either on foot, or as a self-propelled version as the FV432 Mortar. Heavier guns include the ubiquitous FH-70 155mm howitzer, the FV433 Abbot (105mm) and the American-made M109A2 (155mm) SPGs.
TANK - Aah, this is where the division shines. Get ready to deploy LOTS of Chieftain Mk. 9 and Mk. 11, as well as Challenger Mk.1. These main battle tanks are slow, sturdy, and field a powerful 120mm tank gun. This category also contains the Centurion Mk.5 AVRE, the British counterpart to the M728, featuring the same gun as the American unit but on an older tank chassis. Missile-fielding tank destroyers include the FV438 Swingfire, with its dual-launcher and plentiful ammo, and the FV102 Striker, with five ready missiles but only one full reload.
RECO - The British were famous during the Gulf War (which in our version of history has been supplanted with World War III) for bringing “World War II” equipment to the battlefield (construction year 1952, to be exact). That’s why you will play with the rather outdated Ferret armored car, which lacks any modern recon equipment and is armed only with a medium machine gun. It’s fast, though, and its uparmed cousin, the FV721 Fox, is equipped with a RARDEN 30mm autocannon. Other recon units include the FV101 Scorpion and FV107 Scimitar recon tanks, which are already available to the Belgians. This category also contains a M113 Green Archer with radar, and Infantry Scouts in Spartan recon/transport APCs and Lynx helicopters. Cherry on the cake are the 4-man SAS Patrol teams with MP-5SD SMGs. Keep an eye on these guys; you don’t want them to get lost on the battlefield and spilling the beans in highly successful books about their ordeal afterward.
AA - Clearly the division’s weakness, with meagre anti-air defenses such as the Javelin MANPAD teams, Javelin LML (three MANPAD grouped together as a light SAM battery) and the Tracked Rapier self-propelled SAM. Once again, the Brits like to do things differently, as they never fielded a self-propelled anti-air gun, relying only on missile air defenses only. HELO - A few slots that are cheap and with a choice of anti-tank Lynx HELARM (in both TOW and I-TOW versions) and the light Gazelle AH.1 with SNEB rockets.
AIR - The RAF is out in force and gives the division its top cover with a generous amount of slots and options. These range, with various load-outs, from Harrier to Jaguar GR.1, Tornado F.3 and Tornado GR.1 fighters and fighter bombers.
Get ready to take the Crown
The second new map coming courtesy of BESSIERES is a new 10vs10 battlefield: Crown. The map covers an area of 90km² with large urban areas. A defining feature of the new map is the substantial number of command zones. Players need to dominate the battlefield and to do that, they need to keep up the advance, step by bloody step. Taking control of the many towns and villages, as well as the command zones, will be key to victory.
Despite some obviously very defensive positions, we included several open areas on the map, offering clear lines of sight. Expect lots of varied gameplay on Crown.
Let us know what you think!

PATCHLOG
NEW MAP
1 new 3v3 map: Rift
Rift is the first map with night lighting. The map has two huge plateaus in the south and in the north. These two plateaus run along the center of the map which is completely flat and open. Like the Cyrus map, Rift offers extended lines of sight with a drastic reduction of choke points.
1 new 10v10 map: Crown
Crown is our new map designed for 10vs10 battles. The map has a large number of command zones. This configuration is intended to offer a gameplay access to micro-management.
Geisa has always been our biggest map, featuring both chokepoints, huge chunks of forest and a few open spaces. Some of you commanders have pointed out the lack of flanking roads, that sometimes made the map feel too divided in isolated sectors : it might have been difficult to maneuver to help your teammate in need, namely near the side corridor containing Quebec, Romeo and Sierra.
As a consequence, we decided to open up the forest by creating a dirt way network crossing it, making flank and evasive maneuvers much more easy to perform and likely to happen. Thoses changes aim to make the map feel more open and encouraging more offensive moves, while keeping Geisa's core layout.

The French are back!
Salut commander!
It’s good to be back. We got plenty of exciting things to show in today’s DevBlog. Let’s go into detail of the next WARNO update - BESSIERES.
We brought friends! We proudly present the upcoming and first French division 5e Division Blindée, or for you who don’t speak this magnificent language of ours, in plain English, the 5th Armored Division.
There is more: we can even lift the tip of the veil of the very first “twilight” fighting map coming to WARNO. Keep reading to find out more!
Who is Bessieres?
Before we kick off, let’s look at the name’s origin of the next update, BESSIERES. As always, our major milestones are named after known Napoleonic generals. Jean-Baptiste Bessières had a long and distinguished career as a military commander, getting his first taste of combat during the French Revolution in 1792 before fighting against the Spanish during the War of the Pyrenees.
Coming under Napoleon's command, he rose in the ranks, receiving more important postings along the way. During the Napoleonic Wars, Bessières was promoted to Marshal of the Empire. According to some of his rivals, this could solely be contributed to his friendship with Napoleon. As a cavalry leader, he commanded the prestigious Imperial Guard Cavalry, proving decisive during numerous battles. On the other hand, Bessières had his fair share of controversy on the battlefield and off, and he almost dueled with the rival commander Lannes (and fellow WARNO milestone namesake) during the battle of Aspern-Essling.
Like a true cavalryman, Bessières died in combat, struck by a cannonball while conducting reconnaissance during the Battle of Lützen in 1813.
5e Division Blindée
There is even more good (French) stuff to unpack, this time coming in the form of an array of tank guns of the 5e Division Blindée (the 5th Armored Division). First, a brief history.
Formed in World War II in then-French North Africa, the 5e Division Blindée came to liberate its homeland, having landed in southern France during Operation Dragoon in the summer of 1944. Later, it played an essential role in the capture of Stuttgart in 1945. The 5e Division Blindée would continue to have a German link, being stationed in West Germany, Landau, for the duration of the Cold War, where it became part of the French Forces in Germany (FFG).
More precisely, the division served in the II. Corps d’Armée (CA), considered the FFG's frontline formation. Two out of the II. CA were based in Germany permanently, and the other divisions, part of I. and III. resided in France.
The strategic position of France during the Cold War was a significant influencing factor in the Soviet war plans. With the withdrawal of France from NATO’s integrated military command structure in the 1960s, a substantial part of the friendly forces allocated to the southern flank of CENTAG was also removed. However, French troops were very closely aligned with their NATO counterparts. It was determined that during a crisis, French reinforcements would be rapidly deployed to help the American and West German forces defend against a Warsaw Pact offensive. The French II. CA, and the 5e Division Blindée, would have played an important role in whichever World War III scenario.
Size does matter
A disclaimer on the size of the French “divisions” (size doesn’t matter, we all know, but in this case… it does a little). They were much smaller than other NATO divisions, barely a brigade or regiment in reality. Representing the French in WARNO would prove to be a challenge: either we keep it a division, and it would be very limited, or we supersize it to a corps-level, but then it would be too lavishly stuffed with strategic assets.
Instead, we decided to stick to a single “division” format but with a few additional corps forces attached to beef it up. As such, the 5e Division Blindée, as an armored division, will have more expensive tank slots, offset by a more balanced unit availability in other categories, such as AA.
You can say that the 5e Division Blindée might not be the hardest-hitting armored division, but as a whole is more balanced thanks to the versatility of its units.
What to expect in-game
So, what can you expect of the 5e Division Blindée in-game? Let’s look at the new division, category by category.
LOG - Standard for an armored division. The 5e Division Blindée, for ground Command Vehicles, has a choice between P4 PC jeep, VAB PC wheeled and AMX-10 PC tracked armored vehicles. Supply units come as the TRM-2000 truck and Puma Kangourou helicopter.
INF - The core of the division’s infantry comes in two flavours: 8-man Chasseurs squads in AMX-10P Infantry Fighting Vehicles and 10-man Grenadier-Voltigeurs in VAB APCs. All squads carry a mix of FAMAS assault rifles, ANF-1 medium machine guns and LRAC F1 AT weapons. Each infantry type brings its command variant, with the Grenadier-Voltigeurs also coming in the heavy APILAS format. Both VAB and AMX-10P can be deployed in vanilla and MILAN versions, with the former also sporting a T-20/13 autocannon variant.
Continuing with INF category - the division further contains MILAN 1 and 2 ATGM teams, Prévôté gendarmes, Sapeurs engineers squads (with older MAT-49 SMGs and MAS-49/56 rifles), Réservistes (also with older small arms), Groupe Antichar with two APILAS and Commandos fielding SIG-543 and FN Minimi squad automatic weapons.
ART - The artillery forces feature towed 120mm mortars, self-propelled VAB PM-81 mortars (brought to you in a VAB, of course), and the more powerful AMX-AUF1 155mm self-propelled gun. Slot costs are more generous compared to other armored divisions.
TANK - The French main battle tank is the AMX-30B2. Very lightly armored, it also lacks a stabilizer. In turn, it is very fast and can count on a very accurate round. Think of this tank as a “glass sniper cannon.” One card of an older variant, as well as one card of a more modern variant, are available. The older is the AMX-30B, with only HEAT rounds, but very cheap, and the newer version is the AMX-30B2 Brennus with ERA reactive armor bricks. To stay in the appropriate timeframe, this latter variant should have been called in-game the GOLFE (the first ERA experiment). The Brennus name was only made official post-1990, but since the Gulf War hasn’t taken place in our timeframe, for ease of understanding, we went with the later designation instead.
Continuing with TANK - Commanders can also deploy various ATGM carriers, such as the P4 Milan 2 or the VAB Mephisto and AMX-10 HOT, the latter two both featuring HOT 2 missiles. Slot costs in the TNK category are more expensive than other armored divisions. It also includes the rare engineering AMX-30 EBG with its demolition gun.
RECO - This category includes one card of Eclaireurs, deployable in either a Alouette III helicopter, P4 jeep or a VLRA .50 light truck, with the latter also being a recon/transport. Dedicated recon vehicles include the AMX-10 VOA, VAB RASIT (with radar, similar to the West German Fuchs RASIT) and AMX-10 RC and AMX-10 RC Surblindé heavy recon. This latter variant receives more armor but loses its amphibious capability.
AA - Anti-Air defenses are more generous compared to other armored divisions. A good array of options exist, from TRM-2000 Tarasque gun trucks with 20mm AA gun, to AMX-13 DCA with twin 30mm and radar, MISTRAL MANPADs, and Roland 2 and Roland 3 SAM. The former has less range and accuracy - being without radar - while the latter has more AP and accuracy, but turns into a juicy SEAD target thanks to its active radar guidance!
HELO - This category is rather light, with only a few slots and a handful of Gazelle HOT and Gazelle Canon helos available.
AIR - The last category of the division is decent, with a few Mirage 5 F and Jaguar ground attack planes (napalm and cluster for the former; SEAD, ATGM and HE for the latter). Several Mirage III E are available, as well as the much more capable Mirage F1C-200 flying top cover.
A fight in the twilight with Rift
The next map for WARNO is the 3vs3 Rift battlefield, currently being tested by the Strike Team. It will be the first map with twilight lighting, a popular request from our player base!
The battlefield measures 83km² and features two huge plateaus in the south and the north. This elevated terrain runs along the center of the map, which is otherwise wholly flat and open with only a few defensive elements. Much like Cyrus, Rift offers extended sight lines with a drastic reduction in potential choke points.
See you on the battlefield
Now, BESSIERES has more in store for you. Next to the French, the Brits will make their long-awaited debut in the form of the British 1st Armoured Division! Be sure to check in next week.
The new milestone will also introduce two new top-of-the-line tanks, the West German Leopard 2A4 and Soviet T-80UD, to bring 5. Panzer & 79th Guards Division some unique toys.
As always, join the passionate WARNO community. Check the latest news on the Steam News page or visit the Steam Forums. Get to together with other players on either the excellent Discord server, Reddit page, or our Instagram.
See you, commander!
