No more controversy. WBWWB will soon be free and everybody is happy about it (including Nicky)
To all We Become What We Behold fans (and the ones that soon will be):
Thanks to the community for all the messages.
Although there has been a lot of mixed comments and controversy around this port, we all agree in one thing: We Become What We Behold is a great game with a powerful message.
This game has been around for a long time now, and many people know it from itch.io or Kongregate. Still, Steam is the largest digital PC game store worldwide and there's a lot of gamers who are not familiar with it or didn't get a chance to play it ever.
Our intention by creating this port was never to offend anybody, scam or pretend to be somebody else. Quite the contrary, it was
to bring a great game to a broader audience. While the game is free in some other sites, that doesn't necessarily mean it has to be everywhere. For instance, Steam charges fees just to publish it. Also, and I'll borrow Nicky's own words to me "Besides, porting is hard, especially to desktop + Steam, and I never did it myself. If someone does a port they deserve to make some money in return for their efforts!"
I would like to be clear that right from the beginning this port was never illegal, and in Nicky Case's own words: "All my games are under public domain (instead of, say, GPL or CC-BY-NC) because I want people to benefit, even financially, from my creations!". It was exactly because he published his games as open source that we were able to create a port for it, and now it's also available on Steam. If he hadn't released it as an open source, we wouldn't have done it and there would not be this standalone version for it.
Nicky's talent is out of question and I really do appreciate his own understanding and cooperation. We both have agreed (Nicky and me) to keep the port on Steam and that it will become free in a week from now (following Steam compliance period, current owners will keep their versions with the same support as always, so nothing to worry about).
So these are really good news for everybody. Let's keep the word out. It is a good time to replay this great game or play it for the first time if you never did.
