Dev. Diaries #1 - Gameplay loop
Greetings Cultists! We're here. Still active and working on Worship! You've probably seen some activity in our other socials as well as on our Kickstarter page which we update monthly. We do want to give Steam more attention starting now as we feel it's the next logical step for talking about our game. We will be starting a new series on Steam where we'll be showcasing what we've been working on while highlighting certain elements of the game as well as its universe. We'll have a broader approach for today's update, presenting the concept of Worship's loop. Our next updates will cover some more detailed aspects of the game, so stay tuned for more!
In the meantime, hop along and let's dive straight into it!
If you clicked here, it means you're probably wondering about Worship, the game we have been working on. We feel that while our Steam page did the trick in explaining the broad concept of the game, it doesn't truly explain in details what we are going for! So what is Worship about? Well, you are a cult leader worshipping one of the multiple elder gods in the world. Your ultimate goal is to provoke the end of world the way your chosen god envisioned it. Each god has its own goals and powers. Picking your god will greatly affect the arsenal of rituals at your disposal and consequently your approach during gameplay.
TL;DR
• Explore the world around you, accomplishing various tasks and gathering rewards in the name of your eldritch deity, gathering both power and devotion. Devotion measures your overall progression with your faith and the god you worship. • Once you’ve accumulated enough devotion, which is earned by doing most in-game objectives, return to its altar with all of your newfound abilities and allies. • You’ll then be tested in a challenging scenario, be it a battle, a riddle or some more unique circumstances. • Repeat the process with an ever evolving world that scales after each test, until you ultimately free your unholy god. • Die (and retry). Death is part of the process as a cultist and you might not be able to accomplish your ultimate goal every run. Start over in a newly generated map with different things for you to encounter.
Worship is a a roguelike game that focuses mainly on exploration and puzzles. You convert the godless into dispensable followers that you order around to do… pretty much all your dirty work. They fight for you, carry your precious loot around, and can be sacrificed to perform important rituals. They might look frail and easily replaceable, but they do pack a punch when their numbers increase.
The Godless appear white and can be converted to followers with the conversion ritual
Exploration is the main part of the game. As you delve into the world of Worship, you might encounter intricate puzzles to solve while on your way to expand your cult. You might also bump against different factions who are very keen on stopping you in your tracks. By ordering your followers around, you will be able to solve puzzles, fight enemies and carry all your precious loot in an efficient manner. Be careful not to loose to many in your cultish endeavours!
Combat in this game is a bit different compared to other games. A single cult-leader is powerless alone but with your ability to plan and coordinate your followers efficiently, you will stand a chance. Your followers will distract your enemies, leaving a window for you to create powerful rituals to hinder, injure or kill your enemies.
The Impale ritual stuns the Shcrub squad, allowing your followers to swarm the remaining one quickly.
Devotion is an important mechanic in the world of Worship. It measures your overall progression with your god before it will test your faith once your bar is full. The amount of devotion gained will vary depending on your actions.
Sometimes, enemies and destructible objects might drop a relic. This intricate artifact will please your god greatly if you can bring it back to the altar and offer it to your god.
Relics are a good way to obtain a lot of devotion
Regardless, once your devotion bar is full, your test of faith will be ready.
The screen will go dark and the world around you will change once you reach the maximum devotion.
Upon returning from your test, you will be asked to once again prove your worth to your god by accumulating devotion and facing more complex tests and hurdles. This will all culminate in one last test of faith which, once completed, will provide your deity with enough power to make their way into the mortal realm, finally granting you and the world a much deserved permanent rest.
Every cult deserves its base! In Worship, buildings represent the various upgrades you will obtain during your run. As a reward for your deeds, some encounters will drop catalysts. Some objects might even drop these shiny crystals after being destroyed. Bringing them back to your cult base will transform them into upgrade buildings, giving you more power, better stats and even give you access to new rituals.
Each catalyst has a distinct category tied to it. From left to right: Followers, Cultist, Rituals
You will be able to find 3 types of catalysts in the game: Rituals, Followers and Cultist, each one upgrading the corresponding category once activated inside of your cult base. On top of that, each catalyst has a tier which brings stronger and rarer effects depending on which one you end up looting.
Once you reach the devotion limit, your god’s test of faith will be ready. You can keep exploring if you choose, accumulating more followers and upgrades on the way. Once you are ready, you can head back at the altar and pray to your god. This will teleport you and all of your followers to the test’s location. Make sure you have prepared accordingly as some tests will be combat oriented, while some might be intricate puzzles to solve.
The test of faith is an evaluation of your talents as a devoted cultist to your elder god, a moment to truly prove your worth to the being you’ve dedicated your very soul to. In other words, it’s a boss encounter. Tests of faith are meant to punctuate gameplay with unique powerful moments that challenge your talents and gatekeep the next part of your playthrough.
Dying and retrying is part of Worship as a whole. While the world of Worship has its load of dangers and enemies, some Tests of Faith will measure your ability to perform rituals and fight under pressure. Not all runs will end up being successful and dying is an important part of the process for your journey to end the world. You will still be able to find comfort in death as in between runs, and depending on what you accomplish during them, you might unlock different kinds of encounters, rituals and even new gods to worship. The world will once again be yours to explore, but will change in between your attempts.
