Wreckin Ball Adventure

Devlog #5: Playground

Hello again everyone!

Today I want to talk to you about Playground, a third and the last game mode in Wreckin' Ball Adventure.

This mode is more casual then Endless. Is still a cooperative mode but more light and forgiving. It's perfect to practice player skills. This a hunt for stars (these stars have nothing to do with stars in story mode). The rules are simple: there is one map and on this map, stars are generated randomly. The player who finds the biggest amount of stars wins.

But on this map players will find checkpoints, traps, environmental traps and event buttons. Like in Endless the player can activate traps to interrupt another player get a star. We can not forget about fake stars - this is a special trap only for Playground. They look like a normal star but if the player gets closer, they change color to red, start shaking and after a few very short seconds explode - watch out for them!

Devlog #4: Endless

Hello again everyone!

Today I wanted to talk to you about Endless, a second game mode in Wreckin' Ball Adventure.

The story mode was designed for cooperation, Endless is focused on chaos, destruction, and survival. This mode is more cooperative. The main goal of Endless is to survive longer than other players or longer than the previous run (If you play alone).

https://youtu.be/KQlthitnakY

In this mode, there are no checkpoints, if you die you're out form the race and you have to wait for other players to finish the game. So how long is one play in Endless? It depends on the players. The map is randomly generated form prepared fragments but relax, on the map the player will find a lot of ways to die. There are even events button to activate a trap to kill another player.

https://youtu.be/_w2yU3PkEjo

If the environment and traps are not good enough to kill the players, to the race can join a special energy orb. This orb is chasing a player, every the player have his own energy orb. If the player will be in the range of this orb for a few seconds the orb will destroy the player.

Devlog #3: Story mode

Hello everyone! ːsteamhappyː
We are finally back, sorry for the radio silence for soooooo long, we had a lot of work, a lot of changes. Back to the main topic, in this month we wanted to bring you closer to game mods in Wreckin' Ball Adventure.

Today story mode. In this mode, the player will have 60 levels available to play. At the beginning of the game, the player will have access to prolog and 1st map. In classic style to unlock new level player have to beat a current map, collect orbs and stars. Stars are crucial to unlocking new levels, every map will have always 4 stars to collect. Levels are divided into the set of levels (e.g 1-10,10-20, 20-30) and to unlock a next set the player has to collect a certain amount of stars.

Like the name of the game mods suggests, levels are story-driven. But in no typical understanding of story mode, a lot of a story will be hidden in the environment. With each new map, the player will discover more and more information about the word of Wreckin' Ball. There is even a boss fight! But I don't want to talk about it, I don't want to spoil the fun.

We designed story mode for players cooperation but if they want they can race against each other. Every game mode can be played in 1-4 players.

Let us know what are your favourite game modes and why :) Do you enjoy playing storyfull games? Or maybe just free modes?

Devlog #2: Art Style

Hello again everyone! :D Today I wanted to talk to you about an art style for Wreckin' Ball Adventure.

On the one hand, I hate to work on a new art style, but on the another I love it. Maybe because it is another hard part of game development or maybe it’s just tricky? We have lots of ideas, but we are limited to picking only one and somehow we have to show our vision to art designer. All we know is that we want to release this game on Nintendo switch and PC. Wreckin' Ball Adventure is a perfect game for a switch, 1-4 players platformer. So the game has to look like some kind of "eye-candy" but be practical at the same time.

Kinga provided us with 3D models for the prototype (Now she's working on UI and it's going to be great! :D, we will make another devlog about this).
Anyway, she is a very good 2D artist and a wonderful person, but when it comes to 3D, she's still a beginner.
As for someone who just started with 3D these graphics weren't that bad, they looked quite nice but they didn't draw attention.
We kind of felt that on PGA 2018 which is one of the biggest gaming events in Poland. (More about that in another devlog)

First gameplay of Wreckin' Ball Adventure ever:

Prototype first design:

Wreckin’ Ball Adventure:

So when Kinga is working on UI, our 3D models are made by us, RafaƂ and Krystian.
After almost 2 weeks of thinking and talking about changes that we can make in Wreckin’ Ball Adventure art style to draw people attention, we finally got it.
We changed our color palette a bit, added more glow and polished some objects

Our main inspiration for the whole game was Portal 1 and 2 made by Valve.
I know, I know... You probably think that those game don't have anything in common with Nintendo games but we just loved the idea of a test chamber. We felt like it's the only way to improve our storytelling. At first sight, you can think that it's another lifeless/boring platformer but there's more to that. You just play in a sterile, mysterious laboratory and from time to time you see windows that can be like puzzles if you look more closely.
So you are not getting just this fun and basic game to spend some time with, you are also getting a mystery that can drive you very far from the main story. (We'll leave storytelling for yet another devlog).

best,
Marek

Devlog #1: What's in a Name?

My brother and I are big fans of Overwatch, we play this game a lot. In August 2018 when they released a new hero Hammond, a hamster in a wrecking ball mech, we were inspired. “What if we create a game, a platformer that relies on physics and moving like a ball?” A few days later we had our first prototype of Kirro, a build in UE4 and it was fun :D The prototype was simple, just 1-2 players, basic mechanics of movement based on rolling, jumping, and hooking ( the most important thing in the whole game) with few small maps.

First gameplay ever made of Wreckin' Ball Adventure:

When Jarek’s wife played our first prototype she noted that our hero (His name is K160) looks very similar to the main character of Assassination Class, Koro-Sensei. This is a bit of an oversimplification, but let's say he is a "yellow octopus", who, when angry, transforms into a yellow ball.

To avoid legal disputes we came up with the name Kirro and we loved this name for our game. Kirro in Japanese that means yellow. Our happiness didn't last long, there was one problem, something called "Kiiro" already existed; it was a shop for erotic toys. The titles were too similar, a small error in your search and you may just find something you were not expecting.

We wanted to create a family-friendly game. We didn’t want to kids looking for our game and finding this shop. So, we decide to change the name to Wreckin’ Ball Adventure.

I still think one of the hardest parts of creating a game is choosing a name. Because when a player sees the name, he should know what to expect. The name also should be catchy and easy to remember. A lot of good ideas for the name were already taken. I hope we made the right decision with Wreckin’ Ball Adventure, but only time will tell ;)
