A Space for the Unbound

The Hands from the Past will Pull at Your Heartstrings Once Again

Hello, Space Divers!

Such a long title, eh? I am here again to drop more facts about our beloved game. Are you ready?

You might already know, that one of the previous Mojiken games, When The Past Was Around, has touched many hearts around the world. Only with two characters and point-and-click gameplay without dialogue, the game seamlessly tells a story about loss and letting go. The positive acceptance and reviews of When The Past Was Around was pulled out by the game and art director, Brigitta Rena, and the technical director, Elwin Lysander, who also make A Space for the Unbound.

In A Space of the Unbound, Rena gives her magic touch as the game writer, while Elwin gives all his heart and energy as narrative director. Both and the whole team has been working, deconstructing, and polishing the game for almost 8 years.

I wonder what kind of story they would offer in this story-driven experience, adventure game about the relationship of a boy and a girl with a superpower in the end of their highschool year?

It's only less than a week before the game is released, and we hope you are super excited to dive through Loka City. Interact with everyone around town, solve the mysteries, and uncover the truth behind the changes of Atma and Raya's daily life. We can't wait to hear your feedback.

Check out the release trailer of A Space for the Unbound here.

Devlog: Behind The Game Director’s Favorite Character

Hello, Space Divers!

How are you? I hope you have all been doing well!

Today I want to share the game director, Diman Novan’s favorite character in A Space for the Unbound, and a glimpse of the process in the character design.

It might be obvious to you that Dimas’ favorite character is Raya. At first, I assumed it was because Raya is a female protagonist with supernatural power. But, when I asked him why, he quickly answered, “The game itself exists because of Raya. The world, the story, and every detail are built around her.”

When A Space for the Unbound started seven years ago, Raya was initially designed to be more valiant and menacing, compared to the final design we see today. Then Dimas decided to design Raya as someone mysterious because in the game story, she’s trying to hide her supernatural power.

How about you, Space Divers?
Which character that tickles your curiosity? You can see more characters of A Space for the Unbound from our newest trailer.

Hello, Space Divers!

We are so happy to announce that A Space For The Unbound is one of the winners of the Future Division for upcoming games!

During Tokyo Game Show 2022, we also have the opportunity to participate in the Japan Game Awards 2022, a very prestigious award for games in Japan. The award is organized by The Computer Entertainment Association of Japan, where The Future Division is awarded for future game releases from Japanese and international developers alike.

It's an honor that we can stand together for an award with other well-known Japanese developers. We can't express how we feel knowing that there are many people from Japan eagerly waiting for A Space For The Unbound. It is unexpected that, as an indie game, we stood out among other major game titles from famous publishers.

The list of Future Division awarded games with the award given based on the Japanese alphabet order of the games' Japanese titles.

In the past few years, we have gone through a long process of making the game and promised to deliver the best experience for everyone. We hope everyone will enjoy A Space For The Unbound when it's released in the not-so-far future. Also, we are grateful to our friends at Chorus Worldwide for supporting us during Tokyo Game Show 2022.

Shout out to our Chorus Worldwide friends who represented our participation in Japan Game Awards this year!

Regarding the Release of A Space for the Unbound

Dear space divers,

We are sad to announce that we will be delaying the release of A Space For The Unbound until further notice.

Earlier this year we discovered that PQube Games, a UK-based publisher that we signed for the console publishing of A Space For The Unbound for western regions had done certain things which have left us feeling manipulated and exploited, and so we have had to terminate our agreement with them.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in August 2020, PQube Games used our position and heritage as developers from Indonesia to obtain a diversity fund from a well known console platform. The diversity fund was a grant fund intended to help underrepresented game developers, especially during the pandemic. However, instead of giving those funds to the developers as the grant was intended, PQube Games intentionally withheld information about the grant and used it as a leverage for their own commercial gain. Rather than paying the grant money to us, PQube Games hid the facts about the grant’s award and added it as a recoupable minimum guarantee and then used it to negotiate the increase of their revenue share. We have only uncovered the true amount of these funds and their intended purposes in March 2022.

We are absolutely heartbroken that a party we worked with would do this and a project we have worked on for 7 years has been taken advantage of in such a way. Since the uncovering of this issue, we clearly cannot trust PQube Games nor continue to work together for the release of A Space For The Unbound as PQube Games has fallen considerably short not only of reasonable decency, but also of their obligations to us due to these predatory practices.

We have to make a stand against exploitative publishers and speak up about this to stop things like this from happening again in the future. Thus, we are also announcing that we have terminated our contract with PQube Games.

As of this moment, PQube Games is still refusing to hand over publishing control on console platforms back to us. It is with a heavy heart that we must hold back the release of A Space For The Unbound so that we can make new arrangements and ensure that it is published as intended and in a way that is consistent with our and our community’s values.

Signed,
Toge Productions and Mojiken Studio
