Summoners Fate is NGDC 2021 Game of the Year
We're excited to announce that Summoners Fate made it to the NGDC Grand Finals and won the competition to receive their prestigious Game of the Year award.
The Nordic Game Discovery Contest is an exciting, competitive challenge where selected game projects are showcased live in pitch competitions. The grand finals were broadcast during the Nordic Game Expo 2021 on November 5th, 2021. The NGDC selected 12 finalists games from around the world during qualifier events held throughout the year. To make it to the finals, Summoners Fate first had to win the US Qualifier held at Dreamhack Beyond in July 2021. Then, to make it to grand finals, Summoners Fate was selected along with Project Haven and There You Are by the judges from the 12 finalists to compete in a live broadcast at the Nordic Game Expo.
Each team was introduced with a video tour of their game studio. Here's ours: [previewyoutube="csYJgCZSjZo;full"]
During the live broadcast, we had to answer rapid-fire questions from the judges in a gameshow like fashion. These included questions about the game's design and our business model. Finally, each of the three teams had to present a final "last chance" material to convince the judges they were worthy of champion. We captured the judges' final votes with a video montage of our players reacting to their experience playing Summoners Fate:

Guide Part 12: Nature Spells
Nature magic can transform the environment and mutate characters into powerful creatures.
Discovering Cosmic Secrets - Magic in Summoners Fate
Summoners Fate explores existential themes including fate vs. freewill, eternity, and the magic of cosmic motion - a force that drives creation and brings forth being from nonbeing. The five primal magic types in Summoners Fate each represent an emanation of this creative force along a spectrum from the infinite potential of nonbeing to the manifestation of the physical universe.
In Part 12 of our Guide to Summoners Fate, we'll begin by examining the fifth primal magic: Nature.
Nature Spells
Life grows to reap existential meaning…
From the emptiness of the Void, the innate emanation of the cosmic potential, Chaos, gives rise to infinite possibilities, from which the eventuality of Celestial consciousness can arise to define time and order. To make sense of its existential identify, oneness divides itself, and is separated by division of thought and dimensions of space called the Arcane. Now, from within this physical reality, Nature magic, a flow of evolution and natural selection, life and death, can shape unique experiences to satisfy the existential loop.
Nature represents both an ensuing need for life to grow and the balance of all things.
Nature grows and spreads life quickly. Overrun your opponents with the might of the swarm.
Nature magic is associated with the life energy of plants and animals, evolution and survival of the fittest. Druids, elf mages, and orc shamans alike draw upon nature magic in various ways: sometimes calling upon the earth and vegetation itself and sometimes from their inner life force to augment natural fighting abilities to superior status.
Nature spells in Summoners Fate can heal, restore balance and grow life.
Nature spells include abilities to buff units power and life, mutate and transform beings into other creatures, animate and multiply life and heal and restore balance.
Guide Part 11: Arcane Spells
Arcane magic can manipulate gravity and space, giving ultimate control of positioning on the battlefield.

In Part 11 of our Guide to Summoners Fate, we'll begin by examining the fourth primal magic: Arcane.
Arcane Spells
Divisions of thought create reality…
With Celestial magic establishing order and time, the fundamental forces that define reality could took shape. Arcane magic defines the laws of physical reality and consciousness through gravity, matter and psychic energy.
Use Arcane spells to toy with the minds of your opponents and send them to the breaking point of madness by using their own units and spells against them.
In the world of Summoners Fate, an order of wizards and scholars have devoted themselves to the study of this magic at the Academy of Arcane Arts. The earliest of these scholars discovered relics of texts and technology left behind by an ancient race scattered across the world. Through meticulous study of these relics, the Arcane scholars have unlocked secrets about the fabric of reality. With their practice of Arcane magic, they cultivate a superior ability to manipulate their surroundings and even control the thoughts of others.
Arcane magic offers players the greatest control over their cards and the battlefield itself. It takes special finesse to play these spells effectively.
Arcane magic players gain dominance through clever manipulations of the environment and controlling the flow of battle with surprise cards and using their opponent's strengths against them. Arcane spells include abilities such as the manipulation of gravity, creation of forcefields, psychic attacks, and control of positioning on the board.
Guide Part 10: Celestial Spells
Celestial magic defines existential order and can control time itself. Slow time, travel to the future, or rewind turns to change the outcome in Summoners Fate.

In Part 10 of our Guide to Summoners Fate, we'll begin by examining the third primal magic: Celestial.
Celestial Spells
Eternity gives rise to divine order...
Within the moment of eternal chaos that precludes existence, the infinite possibilities give rise to consciousness and order. In this moment, celestial minds came into being and asked a crucial question that would result in the creation of the world: “Why are we here and what is our purpose?” Through contemplation of this question, they perpetuated the divine act of separating light and dark, collective soul and individuality, fear and hope. Their purpose: to attain everlasting contentment and love. Ever drawn back to the darkness of the Void through the innate existential balance, they devised a mechanism that would ensure their success: the dimension of time. Through the existence of time, individuality and meaningful narratives could take place, with the souls of trillions of individual beings acting as tiny mirrors, reflecting back upon one and other powerful emotions of life, love and discovery.
Celestial magic inspires, protects and rejuvenates the spirit. It can even call forth a guardian angel from the sky to save you.
Celestial Magic is associated with divine order, light, love, spiritual energy and the dimension of time. This magical energy is drawn from celestial beings and the existential ether that shapes and forms the basis of reality. Celestial magic can bind spiritual energy to your units, strengthening them to become a superior fighting force.
Leverage the power of Celestial magic to augment your units with potent abilities, heal your allies or blast away the darkness of the Void with a shot of the light.
Celestial spells include the most potent healing and protection abilities, light energy that can banish demons of the Void, and the uncanny ability to control time itself.
Guide Part 9: Chaos Spells
With the greatest arsenal of direct damage spells in the game, Chaos magic allows players to unleash raw destructive fury.

In Part 9 of our Guide to Summoners Fate, we'll begin by examining the second primal magic: Chaos.
Chaos Spells
The essence that moves existence...
Chaos
When non-being gives rise to existential motion, the raw, primal and pure potential energy created is called Chaos. Chaos is without bounds or rules; it is not limited by logic and reason. Even mathematical definitions such as 1+1 = 2 can be nonsensical or as valid as 1+1 = 3. If the entirety of existence could be construed as a line, then the period of history that represents Chaos would exist as a singular point. But, as Chaos is without time and order, this “point”, this “moment” persists as an eternity that continuously draws out infinite eventualities and realities.
The unstable aspect of Chaos magic is represented in unique spells like these that allow the player to risk unpredictable outcomes for a chance to gain a powerful advantage.
From the infinite potential of Chaos, conscious thought is born, giving rise to being, celestial order, and the construct of time and the physical universe. Chaos is not a moment left in the past, however, but a source continually drawn upon to keep the universe within motion.
Chaos Magic
When chaos energy flares into the physical world, its manifestations are unstable and can cause potent destructive force. While destructive, Chaos is not inherently evil, and many good and innocent individuals are gifted (or cursed as some say) with the power to channel Chaos Magic. For example, Nova the Sorceress, is a notable Chaos sorceress. At a young age, she unintentionally destroyed her village with fire when her born powers were first triggered, though she herself is not malicious like the Dreadnoughts - evil inclined beings motivated by the desire to destroy the world.
Chaos magic lets you play with fire in interesting ways like purging debuffs, shielding units and setting the environment ablaze.
In Summoners Fate, Chaos spells grant powerful destructive abilities and have the highest damage output per cost of any other magic group. Create and destroy with incredible force and reckless passion.
Guide Part 8: Void Spells
Void spells can manipulate death and even summon an entire legion of skeletons.

Nature
In Part 8 of our Guide to Summoners Fate, we'll begin by examining the first primal magic: Void.
Void Spells
In the beginning was the Void...
The Void
In the beginning, before time and space, there was the Void. The Void is the existential state of non-being. It is “nothingness” - an inherent truth and the persistent origin of all things, so speaks the scholars and ancient texts of the Academy of Arcane Arts. Accounts of those who have experienced the origin moment often speak of the Void as an emotion - the “feeling of emptiness”. It is a balance of fear and hope: fear that eternity is without meaning or purpose, forever alone in despair, and hope that within lies the potential to be something that is great and loved. This innate quality of non-being is what causes existential essence, the motion that drives the creation of all things within the universe.
The constant hunger and fear of the Void is represented in powerful hex spells capable of incapacitating even the most formidable warriors.
Void Magic
The Void is often misunderstood and many of those gifted with its insights are driven to madness. In Summoners Fate, Void magic represents the negative state of nothingness and is associated with fear, despair, hunger and death. Dark and nightmarish beings, demons of the Void, are shadowy like creatures that feed upon the thoughts and dreams of corporeal beings. They are constant reminders of the existential balance between fear and hope. Void spells include the power to nourish by taking life, the conjuring of dark beings, and the power to bring death.
Void damage spells are notorious for inflicting debuffs and replenishing the caster. It is also not uncommon for Void summoners to sacrifice their own units to gain a significant advantage in combat.
As a player of Void magic, you gain the advantage in battle by taking from the strengths of others, weakening them and empowering yourself from their energy. You make ruthless sacrifices of your own units to gain power. You channel death and decay to build horrific, relentless armies.
Next, we will learn about the raw, primal and pure potential energy that is Chaos.
PAX West 2021 Recap: An Amazing Expo!
Summoners Fate was a popular attraction at PAX West 2021. I'm so glad everyone enjoyed the demo, and it was wonderful meeting our new fans in person.
This year, we had the incredible honor of being selected for the PAX10, a curated selection of indie games chosen by PAX for a unique exhibitor experience. It was an amazing four day experience, and I enjoyed every minute of meeting new players and seeing your reactions and excitement about the gameplay.
PAX provided PAX10 exhibitors the “Rolls Royce” of indie booths, including a 10’x10’ carpeted area, power, 4K TV, 6’ table, 4 chairs, a massive 10’x8’ printed backdrop (which we got to take home), plus extra carpeted space in front of the booth. We set up 6 demo stations (4 iPads on tripods and 2 laptops).
Like most of the exhibitors, I was anxious how the show would go with the limited attendance anticipated. But, when the crowd started pouring into the expo hall Friday morning, all my worries melted away - this expo was very much still PAX. The energy and excitement from attendees quickly uplifted my spirits, and our booth rapidly filled to capacity.
The sidewalls of the PAX10 booths also featured printed keyart for all the games. It’s the details like this that show just how much PAX loves to support indie game developers.
The camaraderie of being together with my fellow indie devs is something I’ve missed during the pandemic, and it was great to make those connections again. PAX even hosted a panel for us to talk about our games, which was broadcast live on Twitch and on Steam. From left to right - Matt (This Means Warp), Radu (Neon Noodles), Faris (Human Apocalypse), Ross (Summoners Fate)
As always, the PAX enforcers did a phenomenal job supporting us by keeping the crowds managed. This year, they even set up markers to help direct players into our booths. I never realized the power of a duct-taped X on the ground before - it’s an amazing thing. When you have an “X”, people naturally stand on it and line up for your attraction. This helped things go really smoothly. I found myself needing to talk less, and instead observed and listened more. Normally, I’d be excitedly asking folks if they wanted to “hurl squirrels at orcs”, but soon it was attendees who were asking me to pitch them the game while they waited in line to play.
Attendees line up the queue line setup by the PAX Enforcers to play Summoners Fate.
Key Moments of Player Feedback
I can recall in the intense, crowd-filled moments how it felt like PAX would go on forever, but now, looking back, it was over in the blink of an eye. There were key moments of player feedback that struck my heartstrings:
An 11 year old boy with his father who asked such astute questions about the gameplay, and, then, after finishing the demo, had the biggest smile on his face and confidently said to me: “This is the greatest thing ever!”
Another attendee who proclaimed: “You have the best game here and I can’t wait to play more!”
And a message I’d received on our Discord early Saturday morning after our first day:
“I can see why you were a top 10 finalist and why I had to immediately buy your game. Your 5+ years of hard work can be seen when you play this labor of love. I'm super excited to see some other Summoners and I think you nailed and perfected what makes turn based strategy games so amazing! Keep up the amazing work and I hope you had/have an amazing PAX!!!”
Of course, the greatest compliment you can give an indie developer is to recommend our game to your friends. And we had that in spades this year. I really enjoyed the experience of folks bringing their friends to the booth and pitching the game to them in their own words. Come Monday, when expo traffic finally slowed down, I found myself hanging out with attendees who’d now played the demo multiple times and simply wanted to chat and watch others play. As a special treat for these fans, I switched over from the expo demo to our prerelease build so they could experience both the full single player mode as well as play multiplayer games against their friends. It was exciting for attendees and myself to watch players battle each other.
Thanks for your Support!
It wouldn’t have been possible for me to attend this year without the support of my friend, Chris, who not only gave me a place to stay, but also kept me recharged each night with sour beers and chicken strips from Linda’s Tavern, and kept my mind sharp with some pretty intense chess battles in the late evening. Thanks buddy! Also special thanks to my local Utah Indie Game devs, Daryl and his son, Parker, who stopped by my booth multiple times to check on me, bought me lunch, and delivered a whole bunch of other treats and goodies to keep me going throughout the show.
I'm incredibly grateful for everything the PAX staff did to support us, and the opportunity it gave us to make personal connections with all of our new players. Welcome, everyone, to our Summoners Fate community, and thank you so much for your support!
Guide Part 7: Advanced Tactics
Previously, we discussed how Summoners Fate uses unique mechanics to make turn-based tactics more fast, fun and accessible without sacrificing deep strategy. Today, we're going to talk about how our advanced mechanics take turn-based tactics to the next level of awesome.
Advanced Tactics
The top down perspective of Summoners Fate was purposively chosen to ensure that the characters' directional facing has tactical significance. A quick glance at the battlefield provides instant information on which characters pose a counter attack threat and which could potentially be backstabbed. This dimension of directional facing powers advanced tactics that clever players can leverage to outwit even the most steadfast of opponents.
Counter Attack
Each character gets one counter attack per round unless they are:
Backstabbed
Overkilled
Not able to attack (ex: frozen or out of range)
The Marauder will counter attack if targeted from the front, knocking the insectoid into the spikes. By backstabbing, the insectoid denies the enemy a counter attack.
Characters who have used their counter attack for the round can be recognized by their idle stance. Notice that the Marauder's sword is no longer raised. Additionally, the icon of the sword crossed out over the character indicates that there is no danger of being counter attacked.
If the damage dealt by an attack is greater than the target's remaining life (bringing them to a negative life total) they are “overkilled” and get no counter attack.
I think we can all agree the squirrel is "overkilled"
A seasoned tactician in Summoners Fate recognizes that winning the war of attrition means maximizing your attacks each round while denying your opponent their counter attacks. You must carefully consider the order of your attacks against the enemy to achieve the best outcomes. For example, if you can sneak a unit behind an enemy to backstab, this might whittle him down enough to enable another one of your units to attack them from the front. Where they might have previously been injured by a counter attack, they can now overkill the enemy and survive to fight another day.
Combos
It's always satisfying to push an enemy into a trap using a knockback attack. But what happens when there isn't terrain available to take advantage of? In Summoners Fate, gravity forces like knockback and pull always have value thanks to our unique combo system.
Combos work like this:
Combos trigger during your turn whenever an enemy is knocked next to one of your units.
The combo attack cannot be countered attacked by the enemy.
The combo attack uses up your unit's action for the round.
Units that have already attacked this round cannot combo.
Combos can be used in numerous ways to gain advantage. For example, you can team up with a unit that has knockback attack (like a Barbarian) to knock a more powerful enemy towards your awaiting allies and have each unit make an attack without the repercussion of a counter attack from the enemy.
Enemies cannot counter attack gravity combos, enabling these heroes to take down the Mountain Troll without getting sledged.
Combo attacks can also be used to close the gap on units out of attack range. Use a grapple spell to pull enemies into your waiting attack swing. You can also use combos to gain bonus actions during a round. For example, you can heal an ally with a cleric, then, use a knockback to trigger her combo attack.
Combos are especially fun for inspiring “game the system” moments where you try and rack up the highest combo chain possible to gain the strategic advantage.
Treant, Dreadnought Titan, and Barbarian engage in a game of Occuloid catch thanks to gravity combos. Occuloid is not amused.
Shield Block
Equipment also plays a role in advanced tactics, and shields are a prime example of that. Characters wielding shields can block all physical attack damage (swords, arrows, etc.) that hit them from the front or sides. The act of blocking with the shield staggers its user, causing their shield arm to drop and leaving them vulnerable to subsequent attacks. The shield can be rearmed for another use by moving to a new position.
After blocking, the shield arm is staggered and lowers to the side, leaving its wielder vulnerable to subsequent attacks.
To use the shield again, the character must move to reposition their stance and regain their bearings.
Shields only protect the front, adding additional strategic value to unit positioning and backstab.
And More
Counter attacks, combos and blocking are just a handful of the tactics available to you in Summoners Fate. Stay tuned for future articles where we'll cover additional mechanics to expand your strategic arsenal.
