Year 1 Development Update

Hello fellow humans, a lot has changed since Adapt's last Steam Development Update. Here's a quick rundown of the goings-ons around here.
- The game’s public roadmap has gone live,
- Game fidelity has increased ten-fold, with the addition of more advanced environmental logic thanks to some streamlined tech.
- Addition of the Mood System, which allows players to more easily understand and control animal behaviors and AI intentions.
- With the inclusion of a new action-wheel system, 3rd person player controls have been improved substantially, and are now close to release levels for polish and usability.
- AI behaviors have become far more in-depth, allowing AI to investigate their surroundings, nest, socialize, engage in combat, carry items, and remember the locations of objects they are interested in such as food and predators.
- New procedural animations now overlay traditional animations for animal rigs, creating vastly improved immersion and alleviating the sense of stiffness that often comes with moving traditionally animated rigs in 3D space.
- Production of Adapt’s soundtrack has begun, and will feature conditional tracks based on current environment, mood, and events in-game.
- New animal parts, with many more coming.
- Diving!
- So... much... more…

Adapt's Developement Roadmap Goes Public

Adapt Phase 1: Eutopia

The first phase of Adapt’s Early Access Development Roadmap is now is now publicly visible. Of course, be aware that everything is subject to change, deadlines WILL fluctuate, and features may be added or redacted as development progresses.

Adapt’s Alpha stage development post early access launch later this year will be broken up into a few phases, and all early access players should be aware of what to expect from that game at each stage. So let’s talk about phase 1: Eutopia.

Adapt: Eutopia is all about developing and testing the game's core mechanics. Fundamental animal behaviors, the species and map editors, the evolution / customization systems, and the “basic” gameplay loop.

The big takeaway from this phase is that the game will likely feel very easy and peaceful, hence the name. Other than some light predation, and occasionally wandering into a low habitability zone, the world is a pretty safe place for your little critter buddies. So it’s going to feel very sand-box-y during this phase.

If you are looking to get involved in Adapt’s early design feedback, this phase will be a great time, as I will be focused heavily on animal behavior and AI, key gameplay features, and general world-building / content updates; so strong community feedback, both supportive and critical will be a huge asset for sculpting the foundations of the game.

I look forward to hearing from all of you
Paul Hervé, Creator

Adapt: Meet the Developer!

Hello everyone,

My name is Paul Hervé, I'm the creator of Adapt. Now that the game has officially been announced for Early Access, I wanted to take the opportunity to reach out to the Steam community to introduce myself and take a few minutes to talk about the road ahead, and about how I intend to handle communicating about Adapt's ongoing development both during Early Access, and beyond.

- So where is Adapt now (May 23, 2019)?

Currently I’m in the process of finalizing a few key features I think are important for Early Access players, cleaning up some core mechanics, and of course doing some serious bug-fixin’.

  • Stats!
The game could definitely use some more tangible player feedback
I want to make sure there are some basic scoring mechanics and graphs in place so players can better understand both how they are doing, and to create a slightly more focused experience for new players.

  • 3rd Person Play
I’m finalizing work on a system I’m really excited about which allows the player to take control of their group’s Alpha. I expect this will likely become the play-style for many players; and allows for a more personal experience seeking out food, reacting to threats, and simply looking at the world from the ground-level. This new feature effectively migrates the current play-style into a “management mode,” focused more on population level gameplay like nesting locations, territory, geography, inter-species relationships, etc…

  • Roadmap
There is a development roadmap, you just can’t see it… Yet. But in the meantime, know that some of the major updates that live there you can look forward to include weather systems, enterable burrows and dens, Status effects such as sickness, shade, + terrain effects, more plants and other features like rocks, caves, etc, and aquatic overhaul, avian parts, inter-species relationships, and very important: Cataclysms. All of these features are slated for pre-v1, but post early access release, and will of course NOT be paid addons or any kind of DLC.

- About Communicating with all of you

Thus far, I have been developing Adapt completely solo, with the exception of my constant biology questions to my genius wife, who is a computational ecologist. As a result, developing does take time, but my vision for the game can be completely uncompromised. Adapt is intended to be the evolution game we all want, and it takes a village as they say, or I guess a population in this case (har har science joke). So I’m going to be working hard to communicate regularly, honestly, and as directly as possible with Adapts community. If you are interested in being part of the process, here are some links:

That’s all for now! Thank you to everyone who’s already showing interest in the project, I look forward to a bright future ahead for Adapt, and to hearing from all of you.
