Update - Finally things to do planetside

Build 1.30 is finally live, check it out!

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=614094098

In this build I have completed and have ready for your testing the first away mission component. "Colony Attack" is triggered by a plantary distress call from a nearby colony when in the Galaxy map. When this random trigger occurs you will hear their plea from the bridge. If you accept you then have to locate the colony using the new location arrow system. That will point you towards the star, and then the planet. Once you have slide into orbit around the planet, more dialog continues. Listen to your bridge crew for clues as to what to do next.

In addition to that another large addition is the complete replacement of the old transport system. It has been replaced with a shuttle bay. Read the list for more info on that and other fixes / improvements.

In this Build

<*>NEW: Added new effects to warp
    <*>NEW: Target location navigation system
<*>NEW: Revamped ship to planet, Now transportation is done via shuttle craft. Shuttle takes crew from shuttle bay to surface. Once on surface shuttle remains unless it is a hot Zone and then it drops off crew then dusts off
<*>NEW: Re-coded Away mission conversation rendering.
<*>NEW: First away mission module, rescue civilans from hostiles
<*>FIXED: Swapped out button sound for one "less offensive"
<*>FIXED: Hostile NPC's moving after being incapacitated
<*>FIXED: Fire from burning debris layering
<*>FIXED: Firing on enemies and connect the shot when firing to the left

Next up is more ground content including components that will drive random events like helping people to move from planet to planet, retreival requests and locating artifacts. If you ideas of what you would like to do when planetside, leave me some ideas in the forums!

Update - Now with 15% more Horz Screen

Check out below for a partial list of whats changed/new and what's coming next...

Ok so here is the latest build FINALLY. Please attempt to get the surface of a planet and engage some NPC aliens, see how it feels and look for bugs so I can get it all balanced out and working right. Once we have ironed out those issues and other bugs you find I will work on the items below. For another build end of the month.

    General Fixes/Changes

    • Add Joypad/Keyboard controls to Star selection at title
    • Added HWA scanline shader to all of the game
    • Increased Horz screen res from 480 to 568
    • Corrected Keyboard/joypad controls on government selection
    • Display Ship Name in Engineering

    Away Missions

    • Added Stamina meter for all crew, use of crew tools or the act of rolling and leaping depletes the meter, Meter recharges a bit of time. Take a breath basically.
    • Added Player/NPC rolling or "Shatnering". Shatnering from cover to available cover is great to avoid getting hit in a fire fight, also rolling will be used in future version to duck under tight spaces. Left in a example pipe section so we can see if it works well.
    • Added Player/NPC Leaping. Leap over new obstacles that stop the crew in the paces. These obstacles also serve as total cover. Background cover items are darker grey and they give you 50% coverage, forground obstacles can provide 100% coverage when ducking.

Things to expect by end of this month...

Encounter alien races and exotic locations as you travel in an endlessly procedurally generated galaxy. No two game are the same. As you explore, randomly generated “Episodes” will have you fighting hostile ships, helping aliens and exploring the surface of new planets.

How long can you survive the deep of space? How far can you travel? Who knows what is waiting for you! Your trek begins now!

Help the game that is trying to beat the odds! Share the news, buy it for yourself or a friend. Procedually generated awesome is our final goal.

    Finally update coming

Ok so for better or worse got a update hitting tomorrow, no later then saturday.

Thank the Gods of Kobal I finally was able to get the NPC rolling and leaping completed. Now when you and your team face one of these new obstacles you will your self by pushing up + left/right or down + left/right roll and leap over them. Your fellow crew will follow suit on there own. This was the final part I need to complete to make ground combat more interesting, cover based and a bit more action packed.

Also of note I have increased the native horz resolution. The game has left it's 480x320 roots and has now a 568x320 resolution. This extra horizontal space really works well in game and makes it look better on modern screens. In addition I have added a little HWA shader effect to the game which I hope will give you more of a old school 80's pc title feel. I will include a complete list of changes, fixes when I post the build. I am 98.99932% close to having all the functions in place. Once done I can then flesh the content out. And we can all finally hit hard space and see what's out there.

Thanks for the patience you have given me.

The Necromonads are at it again!! Colonists must in a orderly fashion proceed to the nearest shelter while the highly trained star pilot provides cover. Inspired by classic arcade shooters but with a twist. Captured colonists become infected and spread it to others. stop the Necromonads infection invasion now!

    Features

    Blistering Arcade Action
    Keyboard or Joystick Control
Lasers, and yes that's right, Bombs!
    Multiple Enemy types
    Steam Leaderboards & Steam Achievements
    Space Zombies

    Gameplay

Each level of Necromonads consists of a number of Colonists and Infection shelters that the colonists try to run to. The Necromonads will attempt to capture and infect the fleeing colonists. To accomplish this they upduct them as the flee and bring them to the top of the screen. Once to the top of the screen the colonist becomes infected and dropped back down them.

Once infected they spit virus bile to nearby colonists causing the infection to spread. Your job as Star Pilot is to stop the Necros long enough for the colonists to get to the shelters, Moving to the next level occurs when all colonists are accounted for and more then 50% of the remaining colonists are safe in the shelter. The Necros will send various different forms after you to stop you as you progress.

When in cover don't forget to "Shatner"!

New Ground Combat Today I thought I would share a gif of the reworked ground combat in game. The ground combat will now be cover based. The player and his team NPC's will in combat automatically duck next to background cover (Dark gray containers) which are passable and provide less then 100% cover from enemy fire. Foreground containers provide 100% cover but need to be leaped over to navigate. Some foreground containers will be destructible and can pose a threat to you or enemy NPC's when they explode in proximity.

Leaping The leaping mechanic has been introduced to provide some more variety in game, with the addition of foreground and background cover, I wanted foreground cover to also serve as a obstacle. behind one you will auto cover to avoid fire, but you will have to time your leap (Direction and up) to avoid incoming fire.

Shatnering in addition to the leap Mechanic I have added the ability to "shatner". By pressing down and one of the direction either while walking or in cover you can "shatner" a short distance. When "shatnering" you can avoid any fire during combat. One thought I had is limit the ability to "shatner" when in cover only. Let me know your thoughts on how that could effect gameplay in your minds. "Shatnering" can also be used to roll through tight spaces that you cannot walk upright through. If we do decide to use "shatnering" only as means to move through cover, then I will introduce a crawl for tight spaces. Let me know your thoughts.

I hope these additions will add more value and depth to the away missions, I hope to have a new build up before end of the month. Thanks for you support of Bit Odyssey!
