Block of Rum

Update to 0.7.4

It's a small update aimed at eliminating extremely unpleasant bugs, two of which were reported by the players RemorselssHC and Rem16, thanks to them for that :)

  • Since the new way of drawing the coast on the map was quite resource-intensive and in some cases could cause crashes, now the old drawing is returned by default, however, the improved drawing can be enabled from the settings menu.
  • Fixed a bug due to which, playing with the ship sprite generation disabled, or on maps created by the editor, the game could crash.
  • Fixed a bug due to which the cursor height could be blocked during the construction of ships, if the inventory ran out of sails.

Update to 0.7.3

  • Added a new block - a machine, which, like wheat field, allows you to produce resources for creating ships in captured cities.
  • Redesigned the appearance of the world map (coastal outlining).
  • Fixed (one more) bug due to which the game crashed when entering the editor.
  • The area of interaction of ships with each other on the world map has been increased.
  • Changed the number of gunners entering the boarding battle. Now, if there are more gunners on the ship than cannons, their number will be equal to the number of cannons.
  • Reduced the area of the entrance to the boarding battle. Now, to start boarding, you will have to come close to the enemy ship.
  • Added a button to load the most effective tactic from the previously created ones in the editing menu of mutiny tactics. Also the mutiny tactics editing menu can now be closed by pressing Esc.
  • Added 2 achievements.

Upgrade to 0.7.2

This update is aimed at improving the gameplay in the ship building part, in accordance with the wishes of the players. It is designed to reduce the number of routine actions performed during the construction process.

  • Added the ability to place a large number of blocks by holding Shift + LMB. Thus, if you want to make, for example, a fairly spacious deck, you no longer have to make dozens of clicks, placing each block separately. This is another idea suggested by the player with the nickname FOKK3R.
  • Also, added the ability to erase a large number of blocks by holding Shift + RMB.
  • Now when you place a sail block at a certain height, the space under it is also automatically filled with sails. This is done to eliminate the need to manually pass each sail block. Now it is enough to install the upper row of sails and, if necessary, cut off the lower one. Thanks for this idea to the player with the nickname Blind.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the screen to shift after installing the first block (it looked like the block appeared in the wrong place where it should have been).
  • Fixed inaccurate display of text in guides (long lines in a guide in Chinese language, and excessively large distance between lines in a guide in English and Russian languages).

Update to 0.7.1

This update is aimed at implementing the players suggestions to eliminate a number of bugs and improve the game. Many thanks to theonetruefox and FOKK3R players for their ideas.

  • Added a opportunity to escape from the battle. Now you can escape from the battle, for this you need to tear yourself away from the enemy ship and press the "E" button. On the map, the enemy will not be able to attack again for 5 seconds, use this time to sail away.
  • Reworked the ship's passability in narrow areas. The collision area of the ship with the land has been reduced to 1 pixel, which allows it to pass through fairly small straits. Also, to facilitate this task, coming close to the shore, the ship will automatically turn towards the water.
  • The current quest is now can be saved when you exit the game.
  • Now for quests in which you need to visit this or that place, a direction designation to this place has been added.
  • Fixed a bug due to which the purchased blocks disappeared during the transition to the construction of the ship, if at that moment the trade menu was not closed.
  • Reworked the trade menu. Now the "exit" button after purchasing the blocks has been replaced with the "load on ship" button. And if there are blocks in the inventory, a warning appears that they will disappear if they are not loaded onto the ship. Now, if the trade menu is closed by pressing "Esc" with an unfinished purchase, the purchase is completely canceled.
  • Added scrolling of inventory by the mouse wheel.

Update to 0.7.0

This update focuses on a new game mode. It is largely an experiment in using Steam Remote Play as a kind of multiplayer.

  • Added "Battle" mode. This game mode is a separate battle between 2 players, each of whom controls his ship.
  • Added enemy indicator. During the battle, if the enemy is outside the screen, a pointer will appear next to your ship, directed towards the enemy.
  • Now, after loading blueprints, ship centered on the screen.
  • Slightly reworked ship damage handling. The increased projectile speed mode is now automatically disabled when hitting a small ship (less than 300 blocks). Previously, small ships often did not have time to calculate all the damage, which led to the need to hit them repeatedly.

Update to 0.6.3

  • Now, when pirates capture five (or more) cities that did not previously belong to them, all other sides stop to fight among themselves until they reduce the number of cities captured by pirates. Hopefully this will add more challenge to late stage of game.
  • When starting a new game, you can now select a map with geography similar to Earth. Most of the cities on this map belong to one of several major maritime empires (similar to the state of affairs in the 18th century).
  • Added the ability to pay off if you failed to suppress the uprising on your ship. If earlier you had to replay over and over again, until victory, now if you are tired of it, you can give 1/10 of the honestly looted bablons to the crew and return to managing the ship.
  • The speed calculation in the mutiny mode has been changed in order to make the combat speed normal on computers with high FPS. Also added to the uprising mode a timer indicating the time remaining until the end of the battle.
  • Small land areas are now automatically deleted in the editor. This is done in order to get rid of land areas that, on the one hand, are difficult to remove manually, and on the other hand, do not make much sense.
  • Fixed a bug due to which deleting a city in the editor could lead to a crash of the game.
  • Fixed a bug due to which, when selecting a map for a new game, it was impossible to re-select a random generation, if one of the editor's maps was selected before.

Update to 0.6.2

  • Fixed a bug due to which ships could start moving during a pause.
  • The difficulty selection screen has been redesigned so that the picture does not overlap the map options on low-resolution monitors.
  • Fixed a bug due to which blocks of gold could be sold in cities.
  • The generation of trade inventories for cities has been changed in such a way as to minimize situations when several slots in the same city are occupied by the same blocks.
  • Fixed a bug that led to incorrect placement of blocks at a certain height in the "Focus at cursor height" mode.

P.S. Thanks to the player with nickname Слепой, for telling in detail about these bugs :)

Update to 0.6.1

This is another small update, mainly aimed at fixing some bugs.

  • Fixed bugs in generating cargo transported by merchant ships. One of them caused the game to crash. The second ruled out the possibility of the spawn of gold blocks.
  • Now, when opening the trade menu, tasks, or information about the world, a pause is turned on.
  • Fixed a bug that caused incorrect music playback during a naval battle. Also, the music sounding after defeating an enemy ship is now played once (so as not to annoy).
  • Fixed a bug due to which, after loading a ship from the library, the additional buoyancy received from the air in the hold was not taken into account.
  • Added one more achievement.

Update to 0.6.0

In this update, a new mini-game related to mutiny on the ship has been added to Block of Rum. Now, when the level of morality drops below 50%, a probability of rebellion arises (the lower the level of morality, the higher this probability). This is intended to make morality an important part of the gameplay. Since mutiny distract from the main process and some players may not like this, they can be turned off in the settings menu.

Mutiny is a small tactical game in which, having gathered your squad, you need to defeat the squad of units rebelled against you. At that:

  • The balance of power depends on the level of morality. The lower the morale, the less support points you have and the more support the rebels have (each unit requires a certain amount of support points).
  • You cannot control any units :)
  • But you can set tactics for each unit before the start of the battle. In fact, you can specify what your unit should do in a given situation.
  • If you don’t set the unit tactics, it will use one of the previously invented ones. Enemy units also can use new tactics, randomly changing one of your previously invented ones. Over time, each tactic is tested in battles and gets its own performance rating (units prefer to use tactics with high ratings, but not always).
  • Obstacles are randomly generated (or not generated, this also happens).
  • Since there are many unpredictable and random moments in this mini-game, you can try to win as many times as you want, because losing does not a gameover.

P.S. And also added 3 Steam achievements (probably in the future I will add a few more).

Update to 0.5.4

This update has made some changes and new features regarding the cost of the various blocks. This is designed to make the gameplay in the middle stage of the game (when the player already has a good ship and a captured city) more pirated (more risky and aggressive).

  • Now, sufficiently large merchant ships (240 blocks or more), controlled by AI, can transport some blocks as cargo. The type of cargo carried is determined randomly, but its mass cannot exceed the ship's buoyancy margin. Thus, small ships can only carry light blocks, while large ships can contain the heaviest blocks.
  • Added block of gold. At the moment, this is the heaviest, most expensive and rare block, it can not be bought in cities and it can only be obtained as a result of victory over a fairly large merchant ship (if that ship transport it of course). This block is added to avoid a situation where the player is interested in attacking only small and weaker merchant ships, ignoring large and well-armed ones.
  • Finally added the ability to rotate the crew blocks in all four directions and added the corresponding sprites (for sailors, gunners, marines).
  • A new city design has been added in the form of a city with a harbor protected by a city wall.
  • The base cost of a sand block has been significantly reduced. Its price was extremely high for one of the most common blocks, which led to a huge amount of easy money after the capture of the first city.
