BrVR: Backrooms Virtual Reality

V. 2.59

Hello BrVRers! (The few of you remaining)

The backpack is a settings option

It's off be default, turn it on in the gameplay settings. This is to reduce jank for new players.

Added brass knuckles, a melee weapon

Brass knuckles can be found, they don't do a ton of damage but are great for partygoer fistfights! Combine with a tommy gun to get the full gangsta experience.

Deleted external deer from level 62

No more confusion, they're finally gone! The deer minigame is now the only occurrence of deer in the level.

Added new music

There are two new tracks to play on the radio in levels 2-3. Both are piano-only tracks. Fun fact: the one that plays in level 3 was ripped from a song I made 5 years ago!

Added many new areas to level 2

Added another water area like level 2.1, some more corridors, some areas with pillars and more pipes generally in the level.

Added many new areas to level 4

Added a room with brighter lights, and a darker area. Both are on the outskirts of the level and contain no additional entities.

Updated Chaze's Guns and Supplies

The banners on the walls of the level 4 location have a partygoer design on them. In addition, there is now a donation counter that gets fuller when you buy things. Once it's full it'll unlock a skin-stealer homeless shelter on level 3.

Added many new areas to level 3

A recreation of the wikidot "out of bounds" picture has been added in addition to some more corridors and walkways.

Added many new areas to level 13

Added some back hallways, 6 new explorable apartment areas, more white hallways, a room with one arcade machine in the corner (and a lore note), some hallways connecting already existing sections, and finally a back section to the level 7 entrance.

Reduced linear/angular damping

The PPSh-41 and 1911 now have no linear or angular damping, meaning that they are free to go anywhere in your hands. By consequence, they don't fall slowly any longer.

Changed tech tree order

The As Val and Mac-10 have swapped places on the arena tech tree. Suggested by SherlockBuzti.

And that's it! Now just to beat up some partygoers... Bye!

V. 2.58

Hello BrVRers! Today, a ton of QOL updates.

Added grabbing points to female and male ragdolls

To make video making easier, the ragdolls now have grab points. They aren't static grab points, they're free-floating like any other ragdoll

Added a new Spectator Camera: Bodycam

If you wanted to make unrecord in BrVR here you go, introducing brvrecord. This one places the camera near the chest.

Added many props to level FUN

Not only props, but the table mesh was upgraded and there are more hanging lights, IE spotlights. There's also a secret back area with some out-of-place boxes. Probably used for skin-stealer skin storage.

Added 2 sounds for notes

One sound for picking up a note, the other for putting it in the notebook. Both are similar.

Added a sound for the 1911 slide pull

Previously it was the same as the 1911 slide release noise but is now a different sound, a "click-click" noise.

Added a new outdoor ambience noise

It's of the birds and trees in the wind. Used in the Sh4dy Gr3y and some other places.

Added more foliage to level 10

Small green grass, some bushes, and small shrubs are now in level 10. Plus, the optimization is better! The gluff should be happy now.

Added LODs to level RUN

Nobody likes a laggy speedrun. Level RUN's meshes now have LODs to boost performance on lower-end systems. This may improve over time.

Added many physical props to level 22

Barrels, gas tanks, port-a-potties, crates, and ladders are now in level 22, all physical props. Sadly there is no second-story to use the ladder to get to.

Curled the Molotov's cloth

It looks more natural now, self-explanatory really.

Revamped th3 5h4dy gr3y

Level0zero now has a dash of color and more foliage, plus realistic water
Level1one has more props, better lighting, and smoother visuals. It also now has bloom and AO
Level2two has minimal changes except for AO
Level3three has underwater post-process, heightmap variation, more foliage, and coral
Level4four has new structures, and sports a randomly generated feeling now.

Replaced the Thruster's model with a high definition one

Fly around the backrooms in style, it now looks as if an airplane thruster was stuck to one end.

Improved the water and foliage on level negative 2

New grass in the hedge maze and realistic water in the pool. Plus, some low-quality meshes were replaced with high-quality ones.

Improved the level 37 optimization and textures

The mountain is no longer laggy, and textures are improved. Also, some realistic water and waterfalls have been added.

Increased the brightness of the torch

It's twice what it was originally. You can still upgrade it to achieve 5x the brightness.

Fixed some level 37 culling

The bamboo is culling correctly and the LODs are better.

Fixed clump collision detection

Clumps can now be hit with many more different types of bullets, and the bullet detection radius has been expanded.

Fixed the 1911 slide

What else can I say but "woohoo"

V. 2.57

Hello BrVRers! As we approach our full release in July, the updates may become a bit smaller. We'll be tidying up for the big day as we also work on our other game. However, we still plan to put out weekly updates. So, here's some new features:

Added semi-auto/full-auto switchers to many weapons

A long-awaited feature, you can now switch between semi-auto/full-auto on the AK weapons, m16, As-Val, and Mac-11. Single fire is the way to go for long-range shots.

Revamped the entire level -0

This level is an odd one out in the Backrooms Wikidot, so we made it equally as weird in BrVR. Glitchy walls, odd colors, and a disorienting environment all contribute to the level. There are also some entities, but they're locked away in rooms where they can't get to you.

Added several rooms to the end of level Run Dash Run

This should (hopefully) freshen up the level for speedrunners. There are a few new rooms at the end of this level that fade into a more "hotel" vibe. It's very cozy, but there's also a liquid slime to kill.

Added more pipes and props to arena2

It now looks more like its reference level, pipe dreams. There are many more pipes now, and some other smaller additions like vents on the walls.

Added a bunker to the middle of arenalevel10

This also gets rid of the walls that I added earlier. This bunker is filled with boxes, bricks, and crates. It's a great path to try to avoid the entities.

Redid the front desk of level 188

A major overhaul! 188's front desk was previously just a desk and a monitor, now it's a grand lobby with rugs, chairs, tables, and better lighting. Some other rooms have been added to the level as well.

Put the old frontrooms in the gallery

Ah yes, old BrVR stuff. You can now relive the days of the green walls and the server room.

Hounds can now spawn with purple hair

"emo" hounds we call them, the edgiest of the entities. They are a 1/30 chance to spawn over normal king hounds. They aren't any different other than their hair color.

Alright, bye BrVRers!

V. 2.56

Hello BrVRers! Today's new features are:

Added a new entity, Healing Windows

These blue windows increase your sanity instead of decreasing it. They can still be shot like normal white windows.

Added more lights to level 4

Some dark sections have been improved, and some new furniture has been added to level 4.

Height adjuster fix

A HUGE improvement to the height adjuster has been made. It is much less janky now. The auto calibration button also works, although the height adjusting system hasn't been tested on Index and Vive.

Level7beta is out of the gallery, and is in the hub

The new level 7 is here! Experience a new entity, Tiny, and lots of bubbles! There are three stages to the level, each getting darker. Don't worry, the soothing level 7 music is still there alongside the cassette recorder and tape.

Added an airhorn reaction to the thing on level 7

His light will go out when you airhorn him, nothing special.

Changed the way that rounds divisible by five work in the level 62 minigame

On every round divisible by five, two things will happen. Either A: you get to shoot at frowners and smilers, or B: tons of does start spawning, and they are very fast. In the old version, there weren't as many does, this has been increased.

Upgraded level 16's and level 11.1's water

Realistic water is always nice. In addition, the trees on level 11.1 have gotten a texture upgrade!

The m16 and ak47 now have light sideways recoil

These guns were a bit too accurate. The first shot is still just as accurate though, so scopes are still useful.

Squashed more frontrooms mesh polygons

We also squashed lag in the process. Even on VERY low-end systems, the frontrooms should run acceptably. (at 60-72 fps)

You can now open the double barrel shotgun's breach with only 1 shell inside

This change should really have an impact on how players use the double barrel. Strangely, this was very difficult to implement.

Remade ramp collision on level 27

Tired of trying to clamber up stairs when the collision is janky and broken? Well, now the stairs on level 27 have been fixed. This should make speedrunning this level much easier. A timer has also been added at the end of the level.

That's all for today. However, we have rebranded our discord server and would love to have as many people as possible join the Woo Studios discord server: https://discord.gg/qm2mx2cdHh
We've had a ton of fun over there, and you can chat with us (the two devs).
Bye!

V. 2.55

Hello BrVRers. Some serious bug fixes today!

Added a "Door skins option"

Ever wanted to remove the frame on the clip-o-matic doors? Now you can, using this option. You can replace the frames with gas, gas (yellow), or an electrical arc. This does require a respawn to take effect and doesn't work in the hub for optimization reasons. More frames will be added soon, so you can make the backrooms yours!

Added 3 new advertisements to the level 40 tv's

One for Buzti Enterprises, one for a map of the world, and one for Roller Rockin' Pizza. This leaves 14 advertisements + 4 game advertisements.

Added more lights to level 15

Some sections are still very dark, but now the sections that previously had lights have been expanded. This makes scouting out entities much easier, as the facelings that are there can sneak up on you quickly!

Added bolt animations to the M16

Self explanatory, the bolt goes back when you shoot.

Deleted a ton of test maps for filesize optimization

These maps, although inaccessible, were hogging up a bunch of filesize. They are now gone.

Put the April fools cursedness in the level 0 sandbox

We weren't ready to just shove the cursedness aside, so we put it in the level 0 sandbox. Suggested by Smiley on our discord.

Fixed some missing textures

Backpack textures, greenscreen textures, and level 94 collision were all missing. This is fixed now.

Fixed some floating signs in level 9

Newton's realtor company can fight through skin-stealers to get you a home, but they can't fight bugs on their own. One of the signs inside of Newton's building was floating, this is fixed.

Fixed recoil jank while running forward

Using the M11, Vector SMG, Thompson, or some other smgs, one would experience a blowback of the gun when sprinting that was outsized. This is now fixed, at the cost of some target collision not working as well.

The skin-stealer in level 4 has finished sleeping

Awww, the eeper! He is less eepy now, what a scrimblo. He also locked his fridge, no more free muffins.

Adjusted locomotion

This update refines the locomotion from last update. It's a bit slower and easier to handle, but harder to make sharp turns.

Optimized the frontrooms

It's still not there yet (janky physics), but it's getting close! It turns out many of the meshes used there had 10k+ tris, that was simply unacceptable! The offending meshes have been quashed, but at little cost to visual fidelity.

That's all for today! Thanks for playing brvr. Join our discord here: https://discord.gg/qm2mx2cdHh

V. 2.54

Welcome back BrVRers!

Redid walking, running, and climbing physics

There's more acceleration when walking, turns are more sharp, and climbing is stabilized. Also, there is less bounciness on the body.

Added another mile to Level RUN

This one features light rings, "knockdownable" doors, a cave section, and a surprise ending. There are also some fixes for level RUN's obstacles. Previously, you could sidestep a few that you can't now.

Completely reworked the wrist communicators

The player now has two wristwatches instead of the MEG wrist communicators. The amount of features is pared back considerably, allowing you to only see your wallet, MEG exits, current time, and current level.

Added some foliage to level 94

Ah yes, the tranquil animated kingdom. There's now some grass, and trees, and trees, and grass, and you get the picture.

Added the m16 rifle

A classic military rifle now put to use in the backrooms. Its high fire rate and damage make it effective, but it does have a good deal of recoil.

Added the Vector SMG

You might think that this is a Kriss Vector, but no! It's a "Casino Chris" vector, based on a popular skin-stealer. You can find this low-recoil smg in the level 5 casino, alongside Chris.

Added some new areas to level 188

A few new rooms, mostly hotel rooms but also some hallways. The lighting has been improved here as well, and there are fewer entities. Another new addition is an outlook to the "outdoors" of level 188.

Added the M1A rifle

This 30-round marauder is very similar to the M1 Garand, but grey. It makes its home in arena mode only as of now.

Fixed some incorrect footstep noises

Stepping on some carpets would play the concrete footstep sound, and stepping on some wood floors would play the carpet footstep sound. This is now fixed.

Fixed culling issues with oak trees

Sometimes, they would just disappear at long distances, this is no longer the case.

Did more animations for the revolver

An animation for the speedloader going into the revolver and an animation of the wheel spinning when the hammer is cocked back have been added.

Changed some level 94 materials

Added some macro variation and better normals on the ground.

Hid many objects inside of lootable drawers

Sneaky scavengers will revel in the fact that there are now hidden coins and money inside the drawers on level 5.

Improved the BAR magazine's bullet mesh

Self explanatory.

Thanks for the read, and happy belated Easter. Bye!

V. 2.53.2

It turns out that every hill in level 94 was broken, I fixed them. Also, a new level 21 revamp has been released as well as a light noise.

V. 2.53

After taking a break for a week, we're back on it! Some hardware issues have kept us down, but we've prevailed. Here's some new features:

Vive Mode

Something we've been working hard on. You can now enable "Vive Switch" in the gameplay settings, which changes a few things. First off, you press grip to grab and double tap grip to drop. Single tap grip to interact. There is also an additional jump button mapped to "up" on the right trackpad. Crouching is removed in Vive mode. These suggestions for Vive compatibility were made by a user named Bonk! on our discord server

Weapon handling changes

Some guns are more heavy now like the revolver, 1911, 870, and the Deagle. The M1A1 SMG now has much less angular damping.

APRIL FOOLS!

There is now a table in the level 0 arena mode that has four very cursed weapons. A shotgun pistol, a "g36", a BAR with a long magazine, and a very obtuse deagle. In addition, there is a silly foregrip attachment that allows you to fly.

Crowbar Changes

To make the infamous zipline in Level RUN easier, there is now only one grab point on the crowbar.

Kind of a small update for sure, but this next one will be much larger. Oh, and there's a new level 21 coming up to completely expand the current one.

A final note, keep an eye out for texture issues. Due to having to reinstall Unreal and Visual Studio on our machine, some textures may not render.

Bye!

V. 2.52

Hello BrVRers! Today we have a ton of changes and content additions!

Added level Negative 10, a wasteland field

Level Negative 10 is a flat, grassy, nighttime level. But don't let its simplicity fool you, in the fog is a giant building full of wrecked furniture, blood stains, and bullet holes. What could have happened there? Outside of the building are a series of playgrounds, it's quite eerie.

Added a new entity, bursters

These crouched crab-like figures hide in levels 3 and 6. When you get near them, they will "burst" on you, and then will be able to take damage from shooting. They also can bite you if you get very close. They are quite slow though, and can be outran simply by walking away.

Added some variance to gun materials

Some, like the Deagle and 870, are a bit more grunge now. The M4 Shotgun's material is more metallic as well.

-Added the M1 Garand to guns n optics n ammo

Isn't "Garand" such a good word? Either way, you can now buy it at your favorite frontrooms gun store. It's pretty pricy though.

Added an "info" tab to the notebook

This tab can tell you all about the companies of the backrooms. It's currently a WIP and doesn't have everybody. Suggested by our playtester Purple guy.

Added some props to buztitraining

Tables, chairs, and a skull (bad to the bone). Also, speaking of skulls, they have better LODs.

Added Lucky Milk, a replacement for Condensed Almond Water

A nice addition straight out of the backrooms wikidot. It's soy milk with three different flavors, Banana, Strawberry, and Chocolate. It can be found in Holden's Anxiety Relief on level 94's indoor playground. It costs 80 Backrooms Bucks.

Redid Level 23's lighting

This one just looks gorgeous. The glow room is also upgraded with many more plants, mushrooms, and other significant flora. There are now tons of multicolor lights inside there too.

Did an overhaul of the level 18 "Memories" map

This map has gone relatively unchanged for 3 days shy of a year now, since 1.7. It now has a graphical overhaul, with ambient occlusion, bloom, and flickering lights on high settings.

Fixed no avatar mode's strange arms

This is a big one, not sure why it was happening exactly but now it's gone! Goodbye, black wrists, you won't be missed.

Fixed a carpet issue in level 0

There was previously a line, where there isn't now. The only reason I put it on here is because it's one of the first things you'd see in level 0.

Fixed an issue with a faceling noise

Sometimes it would play multiple times in a row, after using a grenade. Now this isn't the case.

Compressed many textures

Things should run a bit better, at the loss of slight visual fidelity.

The double barrel shotgun now costs $1200

It's now less expensive, due to mag size and the difficulty reloading.

Changed the revolver rod and 1911 slide

As always, the 1911 slide is an ongoing effort. However, the revolver should be much easier to reload now, not requiring you to touch the end of your index finger to the ejector rod. It instead checks the entire hand's collision.

That's it for this update, however there are some other minor changes. Also, we are going on vacation for a week. We have been working on the game nearly every day for the last year, and we've found we're burnt out a bit. We'll still be on our discord though, we love that. We are going to New Hampshire. Have a nice time brvring (or whatever you call this)!

QUICK PATCH

Hey BrVRers! This patch contains a few bug fixes, including a fix to the backrooms items only mode's lack of converting some weapons. This also temporarily fixes Redactedpart9 on higher-end machines to not drain sanity so fast. In addition, this patch also redoes the boom box, and turns up the m1 garand's ping noise. Also, some optimizations have been done. Expect a more substantial update in a couple days. Happy spring sale!
