BUTCHER - 50% week long sale and 3 new levels COMING SOON

Soon you're gonna have a chance to explore the Mothership a bit. Do you think it will explain what actually happens in BUTCHER? Or will it leave you with even more questions than answers?

3 brand new levels!

Check it yourself tomorrow (Jul 11, 2017 12:00 PM PDT), as the game is gonna be enhanced with 3 new levels that take place right before the vague Mothership intro. The new level pack is going to be full of hints revealing what Mothership and the main character really is. Explore the staggeringly beautiful, yet cold and hostile alien environment... before you show the same hostility to your miserable victims.

FREE DEMO for the undecided!

Moreover, if you're still undecided (or too scared) to buy BUTCHER, those 3 levels will be released for free as a standalone Demo version! All of that happening tomorrow!

50% week-long sale!

The sale is starting in a few hours today, so maybe that will help you decide as well! Stay tuned.

What's up? We made a gig.

We had a really great but busy time before we were able to take some vacation.

We worked really hard to give an experimental game music concert with music improvised to the game played in the real time. It was one of the Pixel Heaven 2017 afterparty gigs. We wanted to stream it and publish some official recordings. However, the local staff had some technical problems rendering some of our plans impossible to realize.

Fortunately, some of our gamedev friends recorded parts of the gig for us! Enjoy:

Members of the band:

Maciej Niedzielski (musician) - that bearded guy playing the piano
Krzysztof Chomicki (level designer) - that bearded guy playing the bass
Sebastian Krośkiewicz (me) (game designer) - that bearded guy playing the game (you can't see me in the videos)

Yes, we're all bearded, but they say beards are manly.

Despite having technical problems mentioned before (no recordings, delays, allowed to play only 13 minutes out of planned 30 etc.), we're happy that we managed to actually do all of this (it was my first time organizing a concert, yay!). Who knows, maybe we'll even do something similar in the future.

Demo version (already available in the Beta branch)

We're also releasing BUTCHER's demo version soon. Not because it's gonna be particularly profitable, but simply because we want to do it. It's ready to be tested in the Beta branch (it requires you to start the game again or play the levels one-by-one in the level browser).

The demo will offer 3 new levels and some new music. It takes place before the events of the main game. You start aboard the Mothership and take some calibration tests before you're allowed to go on your mission and seek your real targets.

We still need to fix some minor issues and do some tweaks, so we're waiting for your feedback!

Console releases

Thanks to Crunching Koalas, the game is also available on PS4 and XBox One! The list of consoles we support might grow in the future, but we can't tell you anything about that yet.

Also, prepare for Summer Sale starting in a few hours. Let's hope it will bring a little more gamers who like torturing pixel people as much as we do.

Remember about the level editor!

We want to play some levels made by you too! If they're really good, maybe we'll add them to the official collection as free DLCs (giving you a credit for that).

Nexus Mods Giveaway

We are thrilled to announce that Nexus Mods is running another giveaway! The last one, in early March, was a lot of fun so we've decided to give away 25 more keys! Visit Nexus Mods on Twitter and Facebook and keep an eye out this Friday through Sunday (April 14 - 16) for instructions on entering!

If you don't win a key, fear not! We are planning to participate in the upcoming week-long Steam sale (starting Monday, April 17)!

BUTCHER Original Soundtrack available on Spotify, iTunes and other stores!

It's finally done! Our soundtrack is now available on Spotify, iTunes, Google Play, Amazon and other stores!

Also, BUTCHER's slowly heading towards Nexus Mods for people who don't want to limit themselves to Steam Workshop only (which means that GOG's DRM-free version has been recently updated as well to support the level editor). Expect more info in a few days.

Still, I know that there are some fixes and tweaks needed for the editor. I'll keep improving the tool gradually over time and plan to publish some examples of more advanced scripts (in both IronPython and C#) one day. For now though, I'll give myself a short break from that to deal with other stuff.

Gamepad config fixes (and Discord server)

Gamepad config fixes

If you had to reconfigure the gamepad all the time because the game used to mess up your bindings, we gladly announce that this annoying issue should be fixed now.

You only need to rebind your buttons one last time to get rid of the faulty values in your config file, then you should be good to go. Of course, make sure Steam updates the game first :murderer:

The bug manifested itself only if you used X, Y, A or B in gamepad config (excluding the initial default setting).

Discord server

If you want to be a bit closer to devs and participate in building some community, we invite you to our Discord server: https://discord.gg/zrS9mHt

Level Editor with Steam Workshop Update

Do you think that there's still not enough violence in BUTCHER? Do you want to release your inner psychopath, but locking people in the basement for real is not your thing? Do you feel like you just lack proper tools?

Then guess what, that's good news for you!

A huge BUTCHER update has been released! Level editor with Steam Workshop support has been added, which gives you access to stuff not used in the base game:

  • Alternative/new weapons:

    • Super Shotgun
    • Rocket Launcher
    • Pistol

  • Items and features:

    • driveable police vehicle (you can get in it using interaction button)
    • teleporters (used for mid-level transportation, not like the gate ones)
    • keycards (an old feature, but not used in the base game)
    • checkpoints (if you activate it, next time you'll respawn at its position instead of restarting the level)
    • missile traps (similar to flame traps)
    • ...and more!

Have fun locking unarmed people in cages full of hungry animals!

[BETA] Level Editor Update

I have to admit it. I lied.

I told everyone I didn't want to implement Steam Workshop features. But guess what, it's done now.

The editor is still available only in the BETA branch, but it will change soon.

The problem was that the native Steam wrapper I used crashed the game on callbacks and I needed to write my own lib to deal with it.

Leaderboards changes in BETA branch
It's now possible to see how your friends performed in each (official) level.

The score histogram has been changed as well. The worst scores (i.e. worse than average minus 2 seconds) are now ignored, making it readable and meaningful.

Expect more small updates coming soon.

Level Editor - Open Beta

If you don't want to wait for the level editor for too long, you can use it right now!

Just right-click on BUTCHER in your library, select Properties, Betas and choose Beta. No passphrase needed anymore.

The level packages are saved in butcher_Data\StreamingAssets\Game\UserContent.

The editor gives you an access to some objects that haven't been used in the base game, e.g, homing missile trap or bot weapons. Some of the unused objects are still buggy.

Make sure to check out the example/tutorial levels and expect some new usable items in the future :butcherchainsaw:

Keep in mind that the editor is not finished yet, so some bugs might still arise. If that happens, please tell us so :)

We can't wait to play some levels made by you!

Trading Cards Available!

Butcher's trading cards, badges and emoticons are now available! Enjoy!

Brutal X-Mas and Happy Eternity in Hell

Ah, Christmas. Give your victims some love. Give them a bit of extra suffering before they bleed to death. Let them know you really cared about their final moments.

We're excited to announce a few cool updates planned during the Winter Sale. One of them is trading cards with badges, emoticons and some backgrounds.

The trading cards will consist of drawings depicting some enemies encountered in the game. Of course, if you collect enough cards, Steam will reward you with one of those pixel-art badges:

So we hope it will be worth it! We want to publish the cards right after Christmas and before New Year's Eve, though the exact date of release is still unknown.

Another planned update is the level editor in our beta branch. We want to publish the exact same thing we used to make the levels. It still requires some accessibility improvements, like the ability to program basic (and even pretty advanced) level logic without writing any line of code, but we're working on it right now!

This is how a basic arena mechanic looks like in the editor:

Stay tuned!
