Leaderboards and gamepad update!
We're happy to announce that we've just moved all beta features to the live production version, including better gamepad support and speedrun leaderboards!
Changes:
Better gamepad support:
Supported gamepads and operating systems (the list might grow in the future) - if not on the list, it might work, but no guarantees (we have no way to test everything, especially on non-Windows platforms):
Windows 7: XBox 360 (wired and wireless), XBox One, DS4, Logitech F310
Linux (Ubuntu 16.04, default driver): Xbox 360 (wireless)
OSX: Logitech XUSB, DS3
Slight auto-aim and rebindable gamepad layout.
Advanced settings for unrecognized gamepads (or not recognized properly) - old "experimental" section.
Possibility to turn off gamepad menu navigation in cases of improperly recognized gamepads.
Possibility to change dead zones for walking and jumping.
No keyboard layout select popup if gamepad is used in-game.
Combo keys support - just press 2 or more keys in the key config prompt.
Multiple save files.
Speedrun leaderboards (or rather scoreboards) - you can beat levels again as fast as possible and compare your scores against others.
Level browser is accessible regardless of the progress of the game.
Fixed: shader compatibility issue that caused low framerate in rare cases.
Fixed: black screen issue (fix worked on Windows 8.1 and integrated Intel GPU).
Fixed: city 4 end-arena elevator bug.
Fixed: city 3 lighting didn't work properly from time to time.
Also, we've prepared a new easy mode DLC for people who aren't tough enough to enjoy the normal version of Butcher. Stay tuned for more info!
So go ahead, sit on your comfy couch and watch your victims lie in a pool of blood for days before they die from hunger or raging infection, whatever gets them first.
Gamepad testing, pt. 2
If you want to test gamepads (and leaderboards), switch to the beta branch (passphrase: "idontmindbugsinthisbranch").
Progress:
Tweaked combo keys support - possibility to assign multiple actions to a single key (useful if you want to have walking and aiming on the same stick)
Possibility to tweak walking and jumping deadzones in the settings
Possibility to have a different buttons/axes for swimming (gamepad-exclusive)
Improved auto-aim (can switch targets, slightly compensates the target speed)
Aiming is not forced to be on a circle around the player anymore, you can move the crosshair freely inside of it, which should feel more precise
No "select keyboard layout" popup if gamepad is used in-game
Minor fixes:
Mouse cursor is not clipped to the window in pause menu anymore.
The leaderboard's histogram of scores should display player's percentile correctly even if the histogram is not yet updated (updates every hour)
Tested gamepads: We were able to test the the following configurations (and they should work out of box):
Windows 7: XBox 360, XBox One, DS4
Linux (Ubuntu 16.04, default xbox driver): XBox 360 wireless (the wired one will require rebind in advanced settings)
OSX (tested by @Khalosh): Logitech XBox 360-like gamepad
Other configurations and systems might work, but no guarantees. Unfortunately, there's no way to test it on our side. Most official Microsoft and Sony gamepads should work (possibly after some reconfiguration, especially on non-Windows systems). Some cheap third party gamepads might work too, but we can't offer any support with them.
Have fun ripping and tearing your wrists and thumbs. In case of extreme frustration, remember that gamepads seem to be pretty good warhammers against monitors.
Also, we're preparing something funny (at least to us), but I won't tell anything more yet.
Gamepad testing
We're working on better gamepad support, which is accessible in the beta branch (passphrase: "idontmindbugsinthisbranch").
I don't want to post it as an update yet, because of too little visible changes.
What it introduces:
Combo keys (also for keyboard users)
Rebindable gamepad layout (similar to keyboard layout)
Slight auto-aim
More abstract way of expressing buttons of known gamepads (LEFTSTICK instead of JOYSTICKBUTTON9 for example, only in non-advanced menu)
The "Gamepad (experimental)" renamed to "Gamepad (advanced)"
Ability to turn off gamepad support in menu in case of non-supported gamepads messing with menu navigation (so you can plug it in and set it up properly)
Supported and tested gamepads: Windows: XBox One, XBox 360, DS4
Other pads on other systems might work, but will likely require some tweaking in advanced options.
The gamepad bindings are saved (if different than default) in:
[game folder]\butcher_Data\StreamingAssets\Game\Joysticks, so it's possible to share them.
Known issues:
Can't unbind the right stick from aiming yet (possible if you edit config file, I can tell you how to do it if you need it)
"Use gamepad in-game" checkbox is still in "Gamepad (Advanced)", should be in "Gamepad" menu
I'm not a gamepad player myself, so I still find the style harder than mouse + keyboard and I can't probably judge whether it's good enough or still needs tweaks (I can play the game on "the hardest" difficulty without that many problems though). It would be awesome if you could give me some feedback :)
Speedrun mode beta testing
Can you beat this level faster?
If you want to test your abilities on how fast you can complete each level (apart from the whole game), we're working on a speedrun mode for additional end-game challenge (and a bit of competition too!).
It's already working, though still very crude and we need the database to get populated with records. It's coupled with Steam, but it's not exactly Steam's leaderboards, as we wanted to achieve something different.
If you want to test it, we open the beta branch for everyone who's interested. The passphrase is "idontmindbugsinthisbranch". We require it so you don't accidentally switch to it if you don't intend to.
This branch will have more frequent updates and you will be able to see what we are working on to further improve the game.
For now, you need to complete the game on at least hard difficulty to gain access to the level browser (though we'll do some changes in this matter as well). Then, every time you click on the level, you switch to the speedrun menu and can speedrun that particular level. Only your best no-death run counts in this mode.
Don't be scared that the speedrun menu seems to look weird, the histogram of scores will start making sense after several records of unique players. that's how it's gonna look like after a considerable amount of records (but likely with different distribution):
So, enjoy propelling yourself with your trusty chainsaw while cutting your enemies' faces off.
Bugfixes and more...
We're happy to announce a new small update!
Changes:
Added: an option to clean-up all gore each time you respawn (Settings -> Video).
Fixed: smoke effects are now below the player and enemies to improve readability.
Fixed: not working skull achievements.
Fixed: being able to go outside of the map in jungle, level 1.
Fixed: railgun ignored picking up ammo when charged.
Fixed: grenades (and likely other window-breaking projectiles) could tunnel through wall if shot through overlapping breakable window.
Fixed: level browser menu impossible to navigate with gamepad.
Fixed: slight sound tweaks here and there.
In other words, nothing should hinder you from squeezing the last drop of blood and feces out of your screaming enemies.
Small Butcher update
Thanks to your feedback and people streaming the game, we were able to prepare a small update that makes the game a bit more friendly towards newbies:
Added more places to hide, more ammo packs and balanced the number of more difficult enemies in Ironworks Facility levels.
Added options to turn off HUD health feedback (hurt noise and low HP warning overlay) for people who don't like it
Make sure Steam updates the game on your machine and have fun making your enemies drown in their own blood before they bleed to death.
BUTCHER is NOW AVAILABLE!
BUTCHER is NOW AVAILABLE after 3 years of development! It's the only shooter that features permanent blood and corpse kicking, and it's 10% OFF to celebrate the release, so enjoy the carnage and tell your friends!
