Modding Stream #5: Projects and Supply Lines

In case you missed the announcement on our Twitter or Discord channel, we're kicking up a new series of livestreams! We want to give people deeper insight into what's possible with the Cantata modding tools, as well as give you a deeper peek at all the mechanics in the game working in concert!

Our next stream will be THIS WEDNESDAY, 4/28/21 @ 11AM EST, streaming both to our store page here on Steam, our Youtube channel, as well as on our Twitch channel, twitch.tv/afterschoolvg.

For this stream we'll be doing a deep dive on unit projects and supply lines, two key features in Cantata. Projects allow you to define (without any code!) unique behavior for a given unit in the game, and supply lines allow you to automatically transfer things between any two given units or buildings, etc.

There's a ton of flexibility in this system, so we're excited to see what you all do with it!

In case you miss the stream, we'll also be posting the archived video to our Youtube channel so you can refer to it later when making your own mods!

Hope to see you there!

New Video: Unit Mechanics

Discuss on our forums here!

Thanks to everyone who stopped by the stream last week! Here’s the stream archive video:

[previewyoutube="8Ae_XKaQicc;full"]

This is the fourth in a series of videos where we create an overhaul mod in Cantata from scratch! In this video we walk your through the first part of unit mechanics. Learn all about interactables and aspects, movement costs, ap costs, and the first look at the loading/unloading system!

That's right, units and buildings in Cantata can have their own INVENTORY! If you want to create some epic single-unit map where you journey a unit across a dangerous terrain and collect valuables along the way, this system is for you. We of course use it in Cantata for other things, but we're excited for all the possibilities it unlocks for players.

We'll be doing part five (!) of our stream next week and dive into more complicated unit mechanics like Projects and Supply Lines, but if you're interested in the real nitty-gritty of unit configuration this one is for you.

You can watch the stream it on our page here (an announcement will go out when the stream is live), or subscribe to us on Twitch or Youtube to be notified when we're live!

For this video, we talk about how you can import custom units ("Interactables") into Cantata, no code required! If you've ever dreamed and creating your own turn-based strategy game with custom art and animations from characters in your imagination, you won't want to miss what we talk about in here!

We'll be doing part four of our stream next week where we dive more into unit and building mechanics, so if you want to learn about all the ins and outs of Cantata unit mechanics, that stream is for you! In fact, there's so much going on with the unit configurations, we'll probably split the stream into two or three separate streams, just so it's easier to digset.

You can watch the stream it on our page here (an announcement will go out when the stream is live), or subscribe to us on Twitch or Youtube to be notified when we're live!

In it we go into detail on creating and importing your own terrains into Cantata! Theres also some sneak peeks at actual units and sprites in the game :) Check it out if you want to create custom art for Cantata, or if you want to import other art from other projects into the game.

We'll be doing part two of our stream next week where we dive more into properties of terrains like vision costs, movement costs, weights, capacities, and more, so if you care more about map design instead of map art, the next stream is for you!

Development Video #4: Terrain Modding

The fourth development video is live! It’s a deep dive on adding mods to the game and walks through the whole process on how to import your own terrains and easily share them with others! I’ll have a video later on the process for Interactables, but rest assured it will be just as easy as it is for terrains.

As always, interested to hear what you think about the modding system, what you’d like to see, what ideas you all have, etc.! Hope you enjoy!
